Again this school year, I will be providing
you updates on our school and district’s transition to common core state standards and the 1:1 digital learning initiative through the PTA newsletter. These updates will also be placed on the school website under my principal message. This month, all our teachers, grades K – 8, are highlighting key digital literacy and citizenship lessons at each grade level. By the end of the month, every student at Oaks and throughout the District will have received five lessons on this topic. All grade levels have different lessons and they build on each other as the students get older. In Kindergarten, as an example, students learn about going online and the rules to remain safe while going online. In grade 1, this builds to how to choose websites that are appropriate for their age group. All lessons were developed by Common Sense Media. You can find all lessons at commonsenseme-dia.org under the education/digital citizen-ship. As students in grades 3 – 5 complete these lessons, important paperwork will be going home with students related to the 1:1 iPad program approved by the Santee School District Board of Education this summer. After our K – 6 Back to School Night, we’ll be holding a grade 3 – 5 parent meeting to help parents understand the iPad program, instructional expectations, and device security. Parents unable to attend an evening meeting will be able to watch a webcast with the same information shared. In order for students in each classroom to receive iPads, all the paperwork must be
completed and returned to the class-room teacher. We expect to have iPads in the hands of all students in grades 3 – 5 by the end of Trimester 1 (around Thanksgiv-ing time). All students in Ms Venolia’s 2/3 combination classroom and Ms Najar’s class will be receiving iPads as well. As mentioned in the August 2014 newsletter, our teachers will be provided many hours of professional development this trimester. Teachers will be attending grade level sessions at the District office on implementing common core math standards; Dream Box, the computer adaptive mathe-matics program for student school and home use; SchoolNet, the District’s new instructional manage-ment suite through our student information system; teachers in grades 3 – 5 will receive additional instruction on the digital learning expectations using the iPads. In addi-tion to this training, we have a group of teachers also involved in the District’s K – 5 math materials pilot. Any purchase of new materials this school year will be implemented in 2015-2016. Thank you all again for a wonderful start to another great year at Carlton Oaks School. We have many new families joining us this year and you have all been a very welcome addition to our school family.

Arts Attack is a
program geared
toward keeping art
in the classrooms
and we are looking
for Art Docents
for the 2014-15
school year. Each
c l a s s , f r o m
Kindergarten to 8th grade, will need an Art Docent
to volunteer their time to teach the students art
once a month. The lessons, supplies and how to
teach each lesson are provided. I am excited to
announce that Arts Attack now has an art room on
campus where all the art will be done. In February, the Santee School Foundation will
have an Art Show and Auction to raise money to
support the Arts Attack program for our district.
Then in May, our school will put on “The Night of
the Arts”, which display’s a piece of art from each
student and class from work they have done
throughout the year. If you are interested in volunteering as an Art
Docent, please contact your student’s teacher or
DeAnna Tritthart at (619) 994-8820 or
[email protected]. We would love to have
parents, grandparents, family or friends. Thank
you and we look forward to a great year of Art!
A few years back, Student of the Month (SOM) was held in the outdoor amphitheater and will be returning there again this year. The day of the week has changed as well. SOM will now be on the last Friday of the month.
Times are as follows: Jr. High 7th-8th at 8:45am, K-3rd at 9:15am, and 4th - 6th at 9:45am. On the months that Honor Roll is also celebrated, Jr. High will start at 8:35am. Our SOM AND Honor Roll assembly to honor our students from the end of last year, will be held this month on Friday, Sept. 26. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
SOCAL PAINT WORKS 10TH ANNIVERSARY
CAR SHOW SATURDAY, SEPT. 20, 2014
CAR REGISTRATION BEGINS 8:00 AM
CAR SHOW FROM 10:00-2:00 PM
SoCal Paint Works has generously agreed to donate the proceeds from their 10th annual car show to Carlton Oaks PTA. We are in need of volunteers to assist with registra-tion the morning of Sept 20th and people to help monitor the campus and crowd. This year, in lieu of having a Fall Carnival, Carlton Oaks PTA will be hosting the SoCal Auto Show. This is a chance to raise money for our school and offer fundraising opportunities to our Junior High and 6th grade campers while minimizing the impact upon our classrooms and teachers at the beginning of the school year.
Here’s what we have in store for you: Silent Auction: Disneyland & Legoland tickets, and a
host of other great prizes along with Principal For A Day,
Breakfast With A Teacher, 8th Grade Promotion Parking,
