OUTDOOR ADVENTUREThe water, rocks, trees, birds, sand, and flowers are awaiting discovery! Summer is a time to be outside. At the Y, we believe that it is vital that your camper has a connection with nature. Your camper will be in awe of the many hidden adventures this beautiful city has to offer. Under the guidance of Y adventure coaches, your camper will experience how great it feels to be outside again!

More weekly fun for campers entering grades 1 - 8. (Shhhhh, don’t tell — it’s about learning too.)

SPARKS An integral part of Explorers, Adventurers, and Challengers week at camp is SPARKS. At the Y, a SPARK is something that a camper is passionate about — an activity that ignites his or her energy and joy. We introduce your camper to a wide menu of activities and connect their interest with one of our caring camp staff who shares the same interest with more energy and joy. This will also encourage other campers to try something new, and SPARK a new passion. When we do that, research shows that your child will feel connected and valued, which is a significant indicator that they are thriving.

C•O•R•E• EXPERIENCE CHOICESDuring Concentrated Opportunity to Receive Enrichment activities (C.O.R.E.), your camper will be able to choose a subject that they are interested in that are often overlooked during the school year. We partner with professionals of their fields, to connect your camper with the most caring and knowledgeable instructors. C.O.R.E. activities complement what your camper learns during the school year by diving deeper into their favorite topics, and by using hands-on minds-on teaching methods. Your camper will immerse themselves in their chosen C.O.R.E. activities for up to three 90-minute sessions each week.

Campers choose one area each week to receive in-depth and expert immersion:

> S.T.E.M.-pede! This summer we are going full steam ahead with S.T.E.M., and S.T.E.M.-peding towards discovery, invention and innovation. We will learn why the experts say, “don’t try this at home!” All while we learn through different topics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.). Campers who choose this C.O.R.E. experience will learn through hands-on, minds-on experiments and make discoveries for themselves that they will never forget!

> Arts-press Yourself! From the first time a child’s crayon hitsthe paper or the camera flash of their first picture, they are able to express themselves in a non-verbal way. Campers that choose this C.O.R.E. experience will be able to put their creativity on display through a variety of arts including: painting, drawing, film-making, and photography.

> Dreamwork Teamwork! Who hasn’t dreamt they were BlakeGriffin slamming home an alley-oop from Chris Paul, or Alex Morgankicking in a game winning goal? Since inventing basketball and volleyballover a century ago, the Y has led the team approach to youth sports.Campers will get to experience these great team sports, as well aslearn about new ones. Inclusive activities provide each camper theopportunity to develop as a leader.

> Summer Spotlight! Ever dreamt of becoming a superstar? Every dancer, actor, musician, and comedian starts somewhere. We want our talented campers to say they got it at Y-camp! Campers will able to shine like a star by being able to learn how to keep their cool under the bright lights, practice routines, and perform. Campers who choose this C.O.R.E. experience will be able to say they got their start in the foothills!

> Top Camp Chef! What makes people happy more than food?!Today’s celebrities are actors, musicians, athletes, and CHEFS! Camperswill learn everything from how to make delicious and nutritious treats,to how to safely maneuver in the kitchen. Who knows, with the skillsthey pick up in this C.O.R.E. experience, your camper will be serving youa three course meal before you know it! Also, by including the Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity standards, campers will learn what they put in their body is just as important as being actives.

DISCOVERERS Give your young camper the opportunity to make new discoveries every day! They will explore nature during outdoor adventures and be introduced to fun, physical activity during kinder gym and swim instruction. Discoverers will also improve on their language skills, build-up their self-esteem, and gain independence through exploration and activities that nurture your child’s curiosity and boost early learning. Create memories that last a lifetime in a safe, nurturing environment.

EXPLORERSExplorer day camp is all about having brand new experiences, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. We make this happen by specifically designing field trips, activities, and programming for your first and second grader, that are not only fun, but develop skills and form the assets that will help your child thrive. Your young Explorer will be inspired to create, play games, explore nature, use their imaginations and learn about teamwork and good sportsmanship, all of this while constantly laughing and making lasting friendships. We will be sure that they go home feeling more confident, and excited to share with with you what they did each day.

“We knew our son loved camp, when on day my son said,

‘Don’t pick me up early from camp today, I think I’m going to be having too much fun to go home!’ ”

ADVENTURERSAll kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are, what they can achieve, and to branch out. With that firm belief, we have designed Adventurers Camp to give your camper outdoor games, hikes, and fun opportunities to develop leadership skills, team building skills, and social skills. We encourage your camper to step out of their comfort zone, helping them find new hobbies, passions, and talents. Keeping both mind and body active during the summer is essential, and is why C•O•R•E• (page 6) and SPARKS (page 6) were developed. So when your camper writes a “What I Did Last Summer” essay upon returning to school, it will flow onto the paper, not just because of the fun they had, but because your child grew intellectually.

CHALLENGERSWho said having fun at camp is just for elementary school kids? Challengers Camp is an energetic, high-paced, and enriching program for the junior high student — an excellent way to discover who you are and what you can achieve. Challengers combine an ambitious schedule of exciting trips with weekly service learning and leadership development activities. Setting our teens up with opportunities for future success. At the Y, we believe that teens need and enjoy being challenged.

CAMP FOX Unplug and reconnect at the beautiful Camp Fox on Catalina Island. Campers will spend the week in fun-filled activities like swimming, marine lab, tide pooling, fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, sand volleyball, and gaga games. The sheltered cove provides a perfect setting to disconnect from the distractions of home and tune into the sun, sea, campfire, active lifestyle, and friends.

Resident camps for all ages. And families too.

“The best part about camp is that every year I hear about a kid that either accomplished something or tried something new. I feel as if that is part of the purpose of camp. Compared to kids just staying home all day and doing nothing, they are out trying new things and exploring.”

“My daughter excitedly introduced me to her camp counselor. That showed me that she was having a good time and that she felt safe there. This helped me trust the counselors and the YMCA program.”

“I appreciated the interaction with the counselors and how they seemed to know my son well. He adored the counselors and was thrilled to be a ‘Camper of the Week’.”

“My child felt a strong sense of belonging and acceptance by participating in your program. She made such good friends and really enjoyed camp.”

“My child really likes/liked the counselors he had, to the point that he wants to be one of them when he gets older. They take the time to talk with the kids and especially to help them out when they are having a bad day.”

“Thank you for all you do. I feel that my kids are in safe hands when they are at Y Camp. There are always interesting and challenging activities on the schedule and even during slow times, the counselors are funny, creative, cool and engaging. Well done YMCA!”

Parents who shared their Y Camp stories. We started our second week with the East Discoverers. My daughter, Violet, had a difficult time transitioning to the new environment last week. I was a bit surprised because she has been in daycare since she was 7 months old. Counselor Treasure was so patient and supportive of Violet. Violet has told me how much she loves him and that she looks forward to seeing him every day. Violet only liked “girls” until she met Treasure. I am relieved that I can go to work knowing she’s in great hands and has someone who helps her learn new ways to meet new friends. I am very appreciative of Treasure’s work with Violet. I can see her gaining confidence.

Camp Fox FAQWhat is Camp Fox and is it that special? Camp Fox is located on beautiful Catalina Island and it really is! This island paradise combines the relaxation of the tropics beachfront with activities like snorkeling, kayaking, tide pools, fishing and swimming. It also has traditional camp activities like archery, hiking, nightly campfires, climbing walls and much more. We like it so much that we take three different age groups to Camp Fox each summer.

Why is there no East site Challenger Camp the week of July 1-7 ?That is the week that our junior high age campers are at Camp Fox. We believe that the Y resident camp experience is so important for youth that we close down Challengers Camp for the week. For those who don’t meet age requirements, the West site is open for the week.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTAll kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development.

HEALTHY LIVINGHealth and well-being are all about balance. That’s why we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all backgrounds improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYWith our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds and support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.

We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to a better community for everyone.
