THE RESPONSES Music: John Reading (c. 1645-92)

O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PSALM 119.33-40 Sung by the choir Please sit

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes: and I shall keep it unto the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law: yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. 35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments: for therein is my desire. 36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies: and not to covetousness. 37 O turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity: and quicken thou me in thy way. 38 O stablish thy word in thy servant: that I may fear thee. 39 Take away the rebuke that I am afraid of: for thy judgements are good.40 Behold, my delight is in thy commandments: O quicken me in thy righteousness.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Chant: June Nixon

FIRST READING: Exodus 3.9-17a Read by Janet Bell

9The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. 10So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.’ 11But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ 12He said, ‘I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.’

13But Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the Israelites and say to them, “The God of your ancestors has sent me to you”, and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?’ 14God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ He said further, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “I AM has sent me to you.” ’ 15God also said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you”: This is my name for ever, and this my title for all generations. 16Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and say to them, “The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me,

saying: I have given heed to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt. 17I declare that I will bring you up out of the misery of Egypt.”

Here ends the first reading.

THE MAGNIFICAT Sung by the Choir Please stand The Song of Mary, St Luke 1.46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Music: Evening Service in E minor – Stanley Vann (1910-2010)

SECOND READING: Matthew 26.57-75 Read by Canon Michael Shand QC AM

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, in whose house the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest; and going inside, he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end. 59Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, 60but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward 61and said, ‘This fellow said, “I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.” ’ 62The high priest stood up and said, ‘Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?’ 63But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, ‘I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’ 64Jesus said to him, ‘You have said so. But I tell you, From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.’ 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66What is your verdict?’ They answered, ‘He deserves death.’ 67Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him, 68saying, ‘Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who is it that struck you?’ 69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl

5

came to him and said, ‘You also were with Jesus the Galilean.’ 70But he denied it before all of them, saying, ‘I do not know what you are talking about.’ 71When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, ‘This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.’ 72Again he denied it with an oath, ‘I do not know the man.’ 73After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, ‘Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.’ 74Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, ‘I do not know the man!’ At that moment the cock crowed. 75Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: ‘Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.

Here ends the second reading.

NUNC DIMITTIS Sung by the Choir Please stand The Song of Simeon, St Luke 2.29-32

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Music: Evening Service in E minor –Vann

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen.

The Officiant and Choir sing

THE LESSER LITANY

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. Please sit or kneel

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

RESPONSES

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation.

O Lord, save the Queen. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful.

O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

THE COLLECTS

We beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

THE ANTHEM Sung by the Choir Please be seated

Fling wide the gates – John Stainer (1840-1901)

Fling wide the gates! For the Saviour waits To tread in his royal way; He has come from above, in his power and love, To die on this Passion day. His cross is the sign of his love divine, His crown is the thorn-wreath of woe; He bears his load on the sorrowful road And bends ’neath the burden low.

THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Please sit or kneel

Concluding with

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, evermore. Amen.

Your truth unchanged has ever stood, you save all those who on you call, to those yet seeking you are good, to those who find you, all in all.

4

For you our restless spirits yearn, whatever comes, until the last, glad when your presence we discern, blest when our faith can hold you fast.

3

We taste you, Lord, the living bread, and long to feast upon you still, we drink of you, the fountainhead, and thirst our souls from you to fill.

5

For ever, Jesus, with us stay, make all our moments calm and bright, chase the dark night of sin away, shed on this world your holy light.

THE DISMISSAL HYMN Please stand

2

I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live:’ I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

3

I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘I am this dark world’s light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright:’ I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I’ll walk till travelling days are done.

SERMON SERIES STUDY QUESTIONS

Consider the following Study Questions:

How do we take seriously those who hold a faith different from our own and at the same time proclaim our own belief in Christ (as Paul did)?

In what ways can we be ambassadors of Christ (being God’s tents of presence) to those around us?

What does it take for us to speak of our faith with respect and understanding?

What will it cost you personally to faithfully share your faith in Jesus Christ?

How may we open our hearts to God?

What things do we need to shut down in our lives to enable us to open our hearts to God?

How may the ‘tents of our bodies’ become temples of God?

How may we come to know God’s grace in our daily lives more profoundly?

How may we reflect in our lives the reality of heaven?

What virtues, what patterns of life, do you need to foster in sharing with other Christians in building up of God’s kingdom in our communities?

Share in Prayer:

Pray that you may live out being God’s tents of presence in daily.

Pray that your heart may be open to be used by God.

Pray that you may daily be a good and faithful ambassador of Jesus Christ.
