After nearly a year of working through the pandemic, I have been reflecting on what I have learned as the dean and director of Juilliard Dance. First, and most obviously, I have learned that our dancers thrive on opportunities to move within the spaces in our building. The chance to be together, even in small groups, makes all the difference. The transference of energy from one artist to another has a cumulative effect, leading to an environment steeped in generosity and gratitude. Second, I am proud of how we, as a community, have problem-solved and found creative solutions despite the restrictions. In fact, the restrictions and challenges have amplified our innovative thinking. And last, this time has solidified my belief that we are an incredibly resilient group of artists who are going to seize the day and live boldly in each moment. The work that I see unfolding at Juilliard is nothing short of remarkable.

Led by Juilliard faculty Janis Brenner, Jerome Begin, and Daniel Ott, Choreographers & Composers is a celebrated cross-divisional course. Six choreographers from the Class of 2022 were paired with six composers in the spring semester of 2020. The initial conversations and seeds of music and movement were generated via Zoom. Finally, in October, the choreographers were able to work with the second-year class of dancers, in small groups of four, in our studios at the school. Everyone from our Dance Division staff to our production team dedicated their energies to giving the students a meaningful learning and performance experience. In turn, the students gave their all. Seeing these performances, beautifully documented on film, reminds me of the power of dance and music to tell stories and communicate in the universal language of the soul.

Thank you for supporting our studentsby enjoying this performance. Through it all, Juilliard dances.

Warmly,

Alicia Graf MackDean and Director, Juilliard Dance

About the Designers

Márion Talán

Márion Talán (Costume Design) is wardrobe supervisor at Juilliard whose designs include Her Opponent, by Joe Salvatore at the Jerry Orbach Theater; A Rather Lovely Thing by Bryan Arias; collaboration with Spencer Theberge at Jacob’s Pillow; Small and Tall at Jacob’s Pillow and Meet Ella at Gibney by Caleb Teicher; Glaciers by Liz Gerring at the Joyce; Talksikan for Ballet X; Fold by Fold for Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet by Norbert De La Cruz; Juilliard Dance: Choreographers & Composers and Senior Production (2005-17); SECUS, Max, and Three by Ohad Naharin at Juilliard (costume coordinator, 2010 and 2012); and a new version of Jerome Robbins’ Opus Jazz at Juilliard.

Lighting Design

Lighting Design for Choreographers & Composers in the Willson Theater is provided by the Third-Year Stagecraft class of Leslie Smith. The class was divided into lighting design teams and assigned to the six pieces. The focus was on general concepts, color, rhythm, and intensity. Smith provided support and guidance with cueing as the student teams created individual looks for each piece. This experience is a vital step in familiarizing the class with the Willson Theater and with lighting design. Class of 2022: Scott Autry, Erin Brothers, Jameson Burke, Aaron Choate, Morgan Clune, Holden Cole, Joan Dwiartanto, Graham Feeny, Jada German, Ellexis Hatch, Cali Hollister, Harrison Knostman, Lounes Landri, Nicole Leung, Eleni Loving, Robert Mason, Terrance Matthews, Hugo Pizano, Jacalyn Tatro, Cyrie Topete, Kylie Toy.

About Juilliard Dance

Under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Juilliard Dance develops artists of the 21st century—trained in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance forms. Established in 1951 by William Schuman during his tenure as president of Juilliard, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, Juilliard Dance became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques. In the four-year dance program—leading to a bachelor of fine arts degree—students learn the great traditions of both past and present. Juilliard dancers enjoy unparalleled opportunities to work with today’s leading choreographers and perform both new and existing repertory. In addition to high caliber technical training and performances, dancers learn about the craft of choreography and immerse themselves in other facets of the field. Located at Lincoln Center in New York City, Juilliard prepares dancers for all the possibilities that lie ahead. Juilliard dance alumni include the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, Lar Lubovitch, Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, BJM, L.A. Dance Project, Limón Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, Kidd Pivot, and Batsheva Dance Company, among many others, as well as in several Broadway productions. Juilliard’s Dance Division was the proud recipient of the 2015 Capezio Award, the first educational institution to receive the honor.

Alicia Graf Mack

Alicia Graf Mack enjoyed a distinguished career as a leading dancer of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She has also been a principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Graf Mack has danced as a guest performer with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Beyoncé, John Legend, Andre 3000, and Alicia Keys. Graf Mack graduated magna cum laude with honors in history from Columbia University and holds an MA in nonprofit management from Washington University in St. Louis. In 2007, Smithsonian magazine named her an American Innovator of the Arts and Sciences. She is a recipient of the Columbia University Medal of Excellence, an award given each year to one alumnus who has demonstrated excellence in their field of work. In 2008, she delivered the keynote address to the graduates of Columbia University’s School of General Studies. As a dance educator, Graf Mack taught as adjunct faculty at the University of Houston and was a visiting assistant professor at Webster University. She is a cofounder of D(n)A Arts Collective, an initiative created to enrich the lives of young dancers through master classes and intensives. She began her inaugural season as director of the Juilliard Dance Division in fall 2018.

Mario Alberto Zambrano

Mario Alberto Zambrano received his early training from the Houston Ballet Academy and the High School for Performing and Visual Arts before joining Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at age 17. In 1998, he joined Nederlands Dans Theater II, where he danced soloist roles in ballets choreographed by Jíri Kylián, Hans Van Manen, Paul Lightfoot and Sol Leon, Johan Inger, and Shusaku Takemuchi. In 2000, he joined Batsheva Dance Company and was a member of the original creations of Ohad Naharin’s Virus and Minus 16. He soon began studying literature at Open University in London while working intermittently as a guest artist with Ballet Frankfurt for the next four years. His honors in dance include a 1994 Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award and a 1995 Princess Grace Award. In 2013, he graduated from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop with an MFA in English and published his debut novel Lotería with Harper Collins. As choreographer, writer, and educator, Zambrano has worked with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Nederlands Dans Theater II, the Joffrey Ballet School, New School, Harvard University, Lewis & Clark University, University of Iowa, and Orsolina28 in Moncalvo, Italy. He has published fiction and nonfiction in The Brooklyn Rail, Guernica: Arts and Literature, Gulf Coast, and Ploughshares Journal, and has served as fiction editor and editor in chief for the award-winning literary journal 12th Street, published by New School. He came to Juilliard as associate director of the Dance Division from positions as assistant professor at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, program director at Orsolina28, and lecturer in Theater, Dance & Media at Harvard University.
