A  Quick  Overview  Of  My  Career  

Early  Years  

•  Born  in  the  UK  •  High  school  in  South  Africa  

(SACS)  •  University  of  Cape  Town,  

studying  engineering  •  First  job:  computer  

programmer  

But  I  wanted  to  be  in  the  music  business…  

I  went  back  to  England  and  formed  a  band.  We  were  signed  by  CBS  Records…  and  our  first  single,  “Strange  Girl”  was  Record  Of  The  Week  in  Melody  Maker.    

The  band  broke  up  and  I  started  designing  clothes  

By a stroke of luck Twiggy saw my designs and offered to model them….

But  all  I  really  wanted  to  was  produce  records…  

Here  is  one  person  I  produced…  

It  was  the  60’s  so  I  travelled  overland  to  India  to  get  enlightened…  

I  sold  my  VW  bus  in  Greece,  then  hitched  rides,  caught  public  transport  and  met  a  lot  of  interesXng  people  along  the  way…  

When  I  arrived  in  Australia  I  got  a  job  running  Albert  ProducXons…  

I  built  the  label  from  the  ground  up;  signed  the  acts  and  learned  the  hard  way:  I  learned  how  people  funcXon  -­‐  and  make  decisions.    Once  I  understood  that  I  needed  to  understand  how  the  ecosystem  worked  and  then  changed  how  I  operated  to  fit  in  with  it,  the  business  part  was  easy.  I  started  to  have  hits.  

Here  are  some  of  the  hit  records  I  was  involved  in  at  that  Xme.  The  rules  I  learned  then  are  applicable  in  every  business  and  as  valid  now.    

Then  I  became  a  band  manager  

I  took  seminal  Australian  punk  rock  band,  The  Saints,  to  the  UK  and  had  more  hit  records.    

I  was  asked  to  return  to  Australia  to  run  a  publishing  company  

I  had  the  good  fortune  to  become  Managing  Director  of  ATV  Northern  Songs,  the  company  that  owned  the  song  catalogue  of  The  Beatles.  

And  then  I  signed  and  produced  a  band  that  I  sXll  think  are  one  of  the  most  musically  influenXal  acts  to  come  out  of  Australia…  

I  set  up  a  joint  venture  with  the  entertainment  giant,  MCA  Music  

I  signed  acts,  produced  records,  videos,  TV  programs  and  more.  I  joined  BMG  and  developed  the  enhanced  CD  and  the  1st  e-­‐commerce  music  website  in  Australia….    

And  along  the  way…  Founded  a  charity…  

Led  a  trade  delegaXon  to  Russia…  

Developed  a  deer  farm…  

…and  was  awarded  an  Order  of  Australia…  

Then  I  lea  music  to  work  in  business  

As  VP  of  MarkeXng  rolled  out  home  shopping  over  40  countries  

Co-­‐founded  Australia’s  first  mulX  media  internet  radio  staXon.  

I  became  CEO  of  ASX  listed  company,  Lake  Technology,  inventors  of  Dolby  Headphone  and  Dolby  Virtual  Speaker  and  the  Lake  Contour  Processor  

Aaer  selling  Lake  Technology    to  Dolby  Laboratories,  I  was  global  strategic  development  consultant  for  the  consumer  division  of  Dolby.  Then  I  co-­‐founded  a  video  analysis  company  

And  currently…  

I’m  currently  Entrepreneur  In  Residence  (Strategic  Development)  at  ACES  and    wrote  the  strategy  and  iniXal  business  plan  that  led  to  the  successful  capital  raising  and  spin  out  of  one  new  company  so  far,  and  I  am  working  on  a  second.  

My  consulXng  company  provides  strategic  advice  to  companies  on  business  model  innovaXon  and  markeXng  strategy  to  help  them  become  adapXve  and  resilient.  I  am  co-­‐founder  of  a  startup  in  the  wellness  devices  sector,  together  with  the  key  management  team  from  Lake  Technology
