CHRIS RAINIER RESUME

Chris Rainier is considered one of the leadingdocumentary photographers working today. His mysterious images of

sacred places and indigenous peoples of the planet have been seen inthe leading publications of the day including: Time, Life, NationalGeographic publications, Outside, Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times,Smithsonian, Mens Journal, Islands, The New Yorker, German and French Geo,and the publications of the International Red Cross, The United Nations, andAmnesty International. Rainier, a Canadian citizen is a photographer for theNational Geographic Society and specializes in documenting indigenous culturesfor the Societies Cultures Initiative. His life’s Mission is to help empowerIndigenous peoples, - helping them to use photography and technology to theenhance their culture & lives

Chris is a National Geographic Fellow, is a Co-Director of the Enduring VoicesLanguage Preservation Project, a Co-Director of the National Geographic SocietyCultures Ethnosphere Program, and Director of the Society’s All RoadsPhotography Program. Rainier is a contributing Editor for National GeographicTraveler, as well a Contributing Photographer for National Geographic AdventureMagazine, regularly completing stories on Culture. He has numerous received awards for his photography including: Five Pictureof the Year Awards for his continued documentation of vanishingtribes, A Communication Arts award for his last book on New Guinea,Where Masks Still Dance: New Guinea, and an International Golden Light Awardin 1994 for his first book: Keepers of the Spirit.

Chris was included in American Photo Magazine's 100 most influentialpeople working in Photography today list.

Rainier has traveled to all seven continents, and has been apart of an expeditionto the North Pole and seven expeditions to Antarctica. He has worked as a warphotographer for Time Magazine and numerous other media outlets coveringconflicts in: Sarajevo/Bosnia, Somalia, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Rwanda, the war inIraq, the Middle East, and most recently covering the Tsunami disaster in BandaAceh, Indonesia He is a member of the Explorers Club in New York City, and in2002 won their prestigious Lowell Thomas Award for Adventure story telling.



His second book: WHERE MASKS STILL DANCE: NEW GUINEA was publishedin 1996 with an exhibition that is presently touring Museums bothin North America and Asia. His third book Ancient Marks is on tattooing andscarification around the world in both traditional and contemporary cultures.

ANCIENT MARKS was published in 2004 and is touring Museums in Canada,USA , and Europe. The Ancient Marks DVD has been widely viewed atnumerous Film Festivals including Tribeca Film Festival ( 2005) TellurideMountain Film Festival ( 2005, 2006) TED Global Conference 2005,Chobi Mela Photo Festival ( Bangladesh (2006) , YPO conference IstanbulTurkey ( 2007), and Pingyao Photo Festival (2007)

Rainier is Director of a website connecting tribal cultures around the globethrough the internet, at The Enduring Voices Project(languagehotspots.org) at The National Geographic Society.

From 1980 to 1985, Rainier was photographic assistant toAnsel Adams - the noted landscape photographer.

Rainier continues to lecture and teach seminars Photography as a tool for socialchange, - both Internationally and in North America. He lives both in New YorkState, and among the mountains & streams in Colorado.
