His comedic talents loomlarge, but he also weavesseamlessly in plot linesthat are confrontational orheart-wrenching.
Lilley, who sparked con-troversy with SummerHeights High, is likely to belauded by fans but critic-ised by some for how hetackles race issues inAngry Boys, a co-production with America’sHBO network.
He plays six characters, whose connection to eachother will be revealed asthe show progresses.
Twins Daniel and Nath-an Sims, featured in WeCan Be Heroes, are back.
New characters are thetwins’ grandmother Ruth‘‘Gran’’ Sims, black rapperS.mouse, surfer Blake Oak-field and Japanese JenOkazaki, mum of a ‘‘gay’’skateboarding champ. Lil-ley believes only those who‘‘don’t get’’ his humourwill be offended.
Lilley found the S.mousecharacter one of his big-gest challenges; he wroteand composed the songs inAngry Boys and had to per-form to a live audience.
How S.mouse is receivedin the US (it will screen onHBO) remains to be seen.
‘‘It’s more about thesend-up of the (hip-hop) in-dustry and that world. It’snot really about black peo-ple, in a way. (HBO) haveseen a lot of episodes andlove it,’’ Lilley says.
