This past summer, I attended thefuneral of my high school footballcoach. He was an amazing man.He had coached for 46 years,and even though his success “on

the field” was legendary, that was not the rea-son that so many others and I remembered him.Thousands gathered to honor a man who hadused his platform as coach to influence thelives of others for the cause of Christ. It wouldbe impossible to estimate the number of youngpeople, and other coaches, who were intro-duced to the truth of the gospel through thisman’s walk with God. That my coach “lived avery simple life with a profound impact” was thedefining comment made at the funeral service.It was during this service that a humbling reali-ty hit me: It’s my turn now. Two of the threemost influential men in my life have gone to bewith the Lord, and with their passing the senseof my own personal responsibility has caused

me to reflect. It’s as though the torch of leader-ship is being passed to me and my generationas we no longer have these older, more matureChristian men to lean on. It is our responsibilitynow to accept this torch and use its light toguide the next generation in the knowledge ofthe truth. But how do we do this when our worldis so adamantly and blatantly against theScriptures? In fact, the prevailing thought beingtaught today in our elementary and highschools, our universities, our governments, ourchurches, our country and around the world, isthat absolute truth cannot be known. We arebeing taught to be tolerant of every faith,lifestyle, thought and moral choice (except, ofcourse, for Bible-based conservatism!). Youngpeople today are convinced that there are mul-tiple ways to heaven, and that what’s right issubjective. This diametrically opposes the truththat the Bible so clearly teaches.

You see, friend, the problem is that truth, bydefinition, is intolerant.Truth reveals a non-nego-tiable absolute by which allthings can be measured,and anything other thanthat absolute is a false-hood. For example, weknow that two plus twoequals four, right? It’s thenon-negotiable truth. So,when someone says, “Okay,it may equal four to you, butto me it seems more likeseven,” they’re wrong.Unfortunately, we havebegun to meet people withthis type of thinking aboutnearly every area of life, andespecially the considera-tion of man’s relationshipto God. As a result, we are

being told thatpeople can reachtheir own subjective conclusions based on theirown rationale and every varying conclusion iscorrect. In other words, going back to our exam-ple, if it seems like seven, then for that person,it is seven. This is obviously not truth.

In order for us to effectively carry the torchinto the future we must be willing to stand upand proclaim that which has become intolerant:the truth.Acts 4:12 put it this way, “there is sal-vation in no one else; for there is no other nameunder heaven that has been given among men,by which we must be saved,” referring to the Onementioned two verses earlier, “Jesus Christ…whom God raised from the dead.” Jesus said “Iam the way, the truth, and the life; no onecomes to the Father, but through me.” This truthis an offense to sinners but is a glorious hopefor believers. The hymn writer Eliza Hewitt put itthis way “My hope is built on nothing less, thanJesus’ blood and righteousness.”

So, with this hope ahead we must be willingto charge forward for the sake of our Saviortoday. If my coach were here, he would boldlyask, “Are you ready to serve the King of Kingsand Lord of Lords 110%?” May God grant usgrace and mercy to humbly take the torch andfaithfully guide the next generation in the truth.

In this issue we offer an article by JamesMacDonald that encourages us to makeScripture a reality in our lives each day.Charles Cooper warns us about trends thatlead us away from a biblical worldview in hisarticle “This Wolf is Real.” An excerpt from Dr.Dan Hayden’s new book will help you to main-tain your faith even when things seem to becrashing in around you.

ACCORDING TO THE “LIBERAL LEFT” IN OUR SOCIETY,the “religious right” discovers a new conspiracy almost daily.One can find hundreds and hundreds of conspiracy stories onthe Internet. The tendency to explain all major world events asthe product of a conspiracy is called conspiracism. After anymajor national or international crisis, the conspiratorialists willfind a conspiracy to explain and detail the “real” reason for thecrisis. A concern here is that many sane, sober-minded follow-ers of Jesus Christ are so accustomed to hearing far-fetchedconspiratorial plots that the “boy-who-cried-wolf” syndromehas started to reduce our sensitivity to the issues. We hear somuch of this that we tend to “tune out” when another theoryis offered. The sad byproduct of this is that we may be caughtunprepared when the wolf comes for real.

In the three examples of conspiracies on the previous page,two are probably the ravings of a fringe, but one is a genuinewolf that demands attention. The genuine wolf among us is themarch toward “global governance,” which for years has beenknown as the “New World Order.” That many believers maybe ignoring it and its ramifications is not surprising.Conspiratorialists have made much of the fact that a one-world-government has been the secret agenda of several political andeconomic organizations for a long time. Many of the organiza-tions credited with a hand in moving the United States towardglobal governance do not overtly state such claims. However, asa member of a community committed to the authority, authen-ticity and accuracy of the Bible, I want to point out twoirrefutable facts. First, there is historically documented evi-dence of a political and economic commitment to move theUnited States toward global governance. The second is thatglobal governance will come at the expense of a believer’sabsolute commitment to Jesus Christ. Global governance is avery real, very dangerous “wolf.”

CHANGESGlobal minded Americans recognized that America’s supportand entrance into a global government would require that cer-tain changes occur in American politics, religion, andeducation. Over the past 80 years, socialistic and humanisticinfluences have slowly eroded the political, religious and edu-cational institutions of America. Are these changes the result ofa normal cultural evolution, or are they the result of planningand orchestration by certain purposed and focused individuals?

Political ChangeHistorically documented evidences of Americans desiring tomove away from American individualism to global pluralismdates back to the early 1900s. In 1920, with a world ripe forchange, the participation of the United States in a league of

nations was actually debated in the Congress of the UnitedStates, pushed by none other than President Woodrow Wilson.The events that led up to Wilson’s crusade to yield national sov-ereignty to a global governing body began long before 1920.The winds of socialism were influencing American politics wellbefore Wilson’s election in 1912. A critical figure in any discus-sion of America’s move toward global governance must includeEdward Mendell House.

House became chief advisor to President Wilson in 1912after having served as his campaign manager. House, a Texan,was a key individual before and during the Wilson administra-tion. His influence on American politics through PresidentWilson cannot be overstated. He helped establish the incometax, the Federal Reserve System, coined the phrase “league ofnations,” drafted the covenant for the League of Nations andpresided over the creation of the Council on Foreign Relations(CFR).

In 1912, House published a novel entitled Philip Dru:Administrator (RWU Press edition, copyright 1998). The bookwas a fictional plan for the conquest of America by gaining con-trol of both the Republican and Democratic parties and usingthem to create a socialist world government. While House’snovel is written as fiction, a careful reading of the novel andobservations of history point to a clever plan deceptively dis-guised. Notice two telling paragraphs taken from Philip Dru:Administrator:

“What is to be the outcome, Philip?” said Mr. Strawn.“I know that things are not as they should be, but howcan there be a more even distribution of wealth with-out lessening the efficiency of the strong, able andenergetic men and without making mendicants of theindolent and improvident? If we had pure socialism, wecould never get the highest endeavor out of anyone, forit would seem not worth while to do more than theaverage. The race would then go backward instead oflifting itself higher by the insistent desire to excel andto reap the rich reward that comes with success.”

[Philip responds,] “In the past, Mr. Strawn, your con-tention would be unanswerable, but the moral toneand thought of the world is changing. You take it forgranted that man must have in sight some materialreward in order to bring forth the best there is withinhim. I believe that mankind is awakening to the factthat material compensation is far less to be desired thanspiritual compensation. This feeling will grow, it isgrowing, and when it comes to full fruition, the worldwill find but little difficulty in attaining a certain meas-

ure of altruism. I agree with you that this much-to-bedesired state of society cannot be altogether reached bylaws, however drastic. Socialism, as dreamed of by KarlMarx, cannot be entirely brought about by a compre-hensive system of state ownership and by the levelingof wealth. If that were done without a spiritual leaven-ing, the result would be largely as you suggest.”

In 1918, House and others wrote a paper outlining their con-viction concerning a league of nations. The purpose of thisnewly established body would be “to promote international co-operation and to achieve international peace and security.” Itwas neither a new idea nor an idea that would die. PresidentWoodrow Wilson was so committed to the concept of a leagueof nations that he literally killed himself attempting to convincethe American public to pressure the Senate into ratifying hisagenda. Wilson, in early September 1919, embarked on a des-perate attempt to take the issue of the League directly to thepeople. After three weeks of constant traveling and speaking,Wilson collapsed in Pueblo, Colorado, and then on October2nd, suffered an incapacitating, near fatal, stroke. The Wilsonera is not the product of conspiratorialists, but a historically doc-umented fact. Wilson’s push for America’s direct involvementin the League of Nations was defeated in the United StatesSenate by only seven votes. However, the political fight to moveAmerica towards global governance did not end with theWilson administration.

A child of the times, Herbert George Wells, better known asH.G. Wells, was a novelist, sociologist, and historian, whowrote over one hundred books. Wells was a strong advocate fora “new world order.” In his capacity as president ofInternational PEN, a fellowship of writers designed to “create aworld community that would emphasize the central role of lit-erature in the development of world culture,” he haddiscussions with both Stalin and Roosevelt where he sought toconvince both men to join his world-saving schemes. In 1928,Wells wrote a book entitled The Open Conspiracy (GreenwoodPress, 2001) in which he argued for a one-world government.He wrote,

While the Open Conspiracy is no more than a discus-sion it may spread unopposed because it is disregarded.As a mainly passive resistance to militarism it may stillbe tolerable. But as its knowledge and experience accu-mulate and its organization becomes more effective andaggressive, as it begins to lay hands upon education,upon social habits, upon business developments, as itproceeds to take over the organization of the communi-ty, it will marshal not only its own forces but itsenemies.

That Wells and others recognized the need for a process thatwould continue to change the political, religious and educa-tional institutions is evident. Notice what Harvard professorStanley Hoffman wrote in his book Primacy or World Order(McGraw-Hill Companies, January 1978): “What will have totake place is a gradual adaptation of the social, economic andpolitical system of the United States to the imperatives of WorldOrder.” Since the early 1990s it appears that the phrase “NewWorld Order” has fallen out of favor to be replaced by the morepolitically correct phrase “global governance.” But the fact thatmany people are much more open to a world community thatinsures peace and safety cannot be denied. How then will thismove influence those devoted to Jesus Christ?

Religious ChangeThe march toward global governance not only required achange in the political climate, but religious change was neces-sary as well. H.G. Wells wrote in The Open Conspiracy,

It seems unavoidable that if religion is to develop unify-ing and directive power in the present confusion ofhuman affairs it must adapt itself to this forward-look-ing, individuality-analyzing turn of mind; it must divestitself of its sacred histories, its gross preoccupations, itsposthumous prolongation of personal ends. The desirefor service, for subordination, for permanent effect, foran escape from the distressful pettiness and mortality ofthe individual life, is the undying element in every reli-gious system.

The time has come to strip religion right down to that,to strip it for greater tasks than it has ever faced before.The histories and symbols that served our fathersencumber and divide us. Sacraments and rituals har-bour disputes and waste our scanty emotions. Theexplanation of why things are is an unnecessary effortin religion. The essential fact in religion is the desire forreligion and not how it came about. If you do not wantreligion, no persuasions, no convictions about yourplace in the universe can give it to you. The first sen-tence in the modern creed must be, not “I believe,”but “I give myself.”

Wells succinctly states the changes that must occur in estab-lished religions to make room for global governance.

THE PROBLEMGlobal governance demands that all religion “divest itself of itssacred histories.” To divest Christianity of “its sacred history” isto remove the defining trait that makes Christianity

“Christian.” Equally, since Christianity’s “sacred history” isrecorded in the Bible, it too must be part of our expecteddivestment. Yet to renounce the Bible as the Word of God takes“Christ” out of “Christianity” because we are taught in John1:1 that the Word is Christ. For true believers, Christianityexplains why things are and who is ultimately responsible forthem. If “I believe” is no longer at the heart of Christianity thenwe are no longer “believers.” For true followers of Christ,socialistic, humanistic global governance is too expensive.

Most true Christians are aware of the continual attempt tomarginalize the Judeo-Christian based values that formed a partof our country’s initial beginnings. The slow, but methodicalremoval of everything Judeo-Christian from the mainstream ofAmerican life is necessary if the United States is to join themove towards global governance. Why? Because the claims ofChristianity prohibit pluralism in religion. Christianity simplycannot “get along” with all the other religions of the world.Jesus Christ demands exclusivity as to faith and salvation.

If global governance becomes a reality as a growing chorusin the United States seems to desire, Christians will have tomake a choice: patriotism or persecution. Our goal here is notto be another conservative voice decrying the loss of the “goodold America” we use to know and love. We are not calling forseclusion or isolationism. We are not suggesting a get-out-the-vote campaign to protect a conservative agenda nor are wearguing for more talk radio to dispel the “evil” agenda of theleft. Our goal is to warn you, the individual, to watch, listenand read so that when the boy cries, “Wolf!” you will know thedifference between conspiracism and prophetic fulfillment. ■

WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP, DIDyour family own a station wagon? Mine did.A metallic, lime-green Pontiac. The best seatin the car was the trundle way in the rear,facing backwards. When you sat there theonly thing you saw mile after mile was thestuff behind you. A lot of people experienceGod that way, as if the awesome stuff Goddid is only ever behind us. Other people sitin the front and never look back. They thinkthat the Bible is only about the future, scan-ning every passage for signs about what willhappen at the end of the age.

But the Bible isn’t some yesterday thing.Neither is God’s greatness only a “Wow”scene in the future. The best seat in theBible is the one that helps you focus ontoday. Yes, the Lord wants to reveal Hismighty work in your life today.

The prophet Isaiah proclaimed thissame good news. God’s promise in Isaiah61:1-3, although ultimately fulfilled in thefuture millennial kingdom when JesusChrist will reign on the earth for a thou-sand years, began during Christ’s earthlyministry, and continues in our day throughthe work of His Holy Spirit. In one sen-tence, His ministry today is this: Nomatter how deeply you’ve been hurt,the Lord can heal you.

Look at Isaiah 61:1, Jesus’ ministry inyour life is . . .

To bring good news to the afflicted;He has sent me to bind up the

brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to captivesAnd freedom to prisoners;

Jesus has His heart set on helping three dif-ferent groups of people. See them there?The afflicted, the brokenhearted, the pris-oners. Who are these people? We are!

Christ came with good news forthe afflicted.The first specific people in this passage thatneed help are the afflicted. Some transla-tions say poor. A good translation from theHebrew would be humble. Jesus will bringgood news to those who have humble spir-its. You know the verse, “God resists theproud, but gives grace to the humble”? It’squoted three times in the Bible—Proverbs3:34, James 5:6, 2 Peter 5:5. This humilitything isn’t a surprise.

In Matthew 5:3 Jesus said, “Blessed arethe poor in spirit,” that is, people who arewilling to admit that they have a need.Blessed are those who are humble enoughto acknowledge that their best efforts are

The Spirit of the LORD GOD is upon me,

Because the LORD has anointed me

To bring good news to the afflicted;

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to captives

And freedom to prisoners;

To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD

And the day of vengeance of our GOD;

To comfort all who mourn,

To grant those who mourn in Zion,

Giving them a garland instead of ashes,

The oil of gladness instead of mourning,

The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting

– Isaiah 61:1-3

not enough to merit God’s forgiveness.Christ brings the good news of eternal lifefreely given—but you must be humble tohear it! You cannot have what Christ has tooffer unless you admit your need. Not justfor salvation, but for every grace for everyday. Christians don’t “have it all together”just because we’ve been to the cross. Wemust remain in that place of humility or wewill not experience the grace of Christ forevery day.

Christ came to heal the broken-hearted.Is your heart broken? The word describespeople who have been hammered by a dev-astating blow. Perhaps a very difficultcircumstance has deeply wounded you. Isthere a profound sadness to your lifebecause of a tragedy in your past? Isaiah61:1 says that Christ came into this worldto bind up the brokenhearted. Like a doctorattending a broken limb. Like someoneministering salve over an open sore bringing

comfort to a place you thought might neverheal. Yes, even in that place Jesus is thegreat Physician.

Christ came to set the captivesfree.If you’ve had a week of failure where you’vebeen trapped in a repeated cycle of sin-con-fess, sin-confess then you know firsthandthe frustration and defeat of slavery to sin.Despite your best efforts, do you wonder ifthat sin will ever be gone from your life?

What you desperately need is the free-dom Jesus came to give. He wants to breakthat cycle in your life and give you freedom.That is what He came into this world to do.Look into your heart and find the deepestplace of defeat. Yes there, Christ would giveyou freedom. It is the birthright of everychild of God.

A Really Great Swap One word summarizes what all three ofthese people groups need: healing. And to

those who need healing, Christ promises anincredible swap. Isaiah 61:3 says Christ willcome:

Giving them a garland instead ofashes,

The oil of gladness instead ofmourning,

The mantle of praise instead of aspirit of fainting.

So they will be called oaks ofrighteousness

If you give God your ashes—your sorrow,God promises to swap it out for a garland.A garland was awarded to a successful ath-lete or someone being publicly recognized(like the apostle Paul wrote about in 1Corinthians 9:25). If you surrender yourmourning, Christ promises His joy and ifyour heart is burdened, God promises tocover you in a mantle, a robe, of praise.

Lastly, ready for this?—when weexchange our sorrow for His joy, we willbe called, “oaks of righteousness.” Would

Look for Christ at work in your lifetoday. “His going forth is as certain as thedawn” (Hosea 6:3). ■

Sensing The Worst • Acts 27:27-37

I once lived in Grand Haven, Michigan—Coast Guard City,USA. Each year we celebrated the Coast Guard Festival witha parade, ceremonies, concerts, carnival rides, fireworks, andconcession stands. It was a wonderful time of celebration. Ienjoyed seeing the Coast Guard vessels docked along theriver promenade, a reminder of the men and women of theCoast Guard who often engage in heroic efforts to protectour shores. The Coast Guard Festival is fun and games, but abrief walk through the museum on Harbor Drive is a sober-ing reminder that the work of guarding the coast is often ahazardous task. Violent storms, floundering ships, search andrescue in turbulent conditions—this is the sobering side ofthe Coast Guard. It is not fun and games; it is very seriousbusiness.

At this point in Paul’s journey to Rome, a Coast GuardCutter would have been a welcome sight. Paul, Luke,Aristarchus, and 273 other people were desperate hostageson a floundering Alexandrian cargo ship that for two weekshad been driven by a violent storm across the MediterraneanSea. Now they were facing impending doom—a tragic andunavoidable shipwreck—and everyone was fearing theworst. This story is not about fun and games on the water—

it is about life and death. It was bone-chill-ing, life-drenching reality.

With the passing of time, the situationwas not getting better for those aboard theship. In fact, their situation was about totake a turn for the worse. You know thesaying, “Cheer up, things could be worse.So I cheered up, and sure enough things gotworse.”

When my wife and I were ministering ata camp in northern Wisconsin, a dear ladywhom I had known for many years came tome and told me about a continuing problemshe was facing in her marriage. She said,“For over a year our marriage has been aturbulent storm. At times, things seem toget better but then they just get worseagain. Actually, I have no idea how thingsare going right now.” Later on I saw heragain and she said, “Well, Dan, things aregetting worse than ever.” Finally I receiveda letter from her saying, “He’s moved out.I’m afraid! What do I do?” Here was some-one sensing impending doom with regardto her marriage and she didn’t know whatto do. So what do you do when the darkclouds roll in and you sense the worst isabout to happen?

Dealing With Your FearIn verses 27-29, fear dominates the

story: “And fearing that we might runaground somewhere on the rocks…” (v.29).A sense of impending doom and a feeling ofhelplessness were gripping everyone’shearts. They were stuck in an impossibledilemma, and it had been fourteen longdays and nights since the storm had firstcome upon them (v.27). If they had beenon land, the storm would have eventuallypassed by, but it had caught them at sea and

had simply taken them with it. It sweptthem past the southern reaches of theAdriatic Sea (now called the Ionian Sea),and eventually deposited them at the littleisland of Malta, just south of Sicily. Theyhad been driven nearly five hundred milesacross the Mediterranean in the space oftwo weeks.1

In was about midnight, and the sailorssurmised that they were approaching land.Since it was dark, there were two ways thatthey could possibly have known this. Firstof all, offshore winds could have carried thescents common to land but absent at sea.That is probably not the case here, or atleast we aren’t given any indication that itwas. Another way to know land is nearwithout seeing it is by the sound of thebreakers on a rocky coastline. That appearsto be the most likely scenario in this situa-tion. In fact, if you go to the island of Maltatoday, there is a bay, which is named afterthis story, called St. Paul’s Bay. For a boat toenter that bay it has to pass within a quar-ter of a mile of the Point of Koura.2 Thewaves pummel the rocky coast of Maltathere, making a noise loud enough to warnsailors even at night that their ship isapproaching land. Sailors say that in thedaytime you can see the breakers on thatpart of Malta before you can see land.

So, here’s the situation. It was dark. Thesailors knew that they were coming near arocky coast, but they didn’t know wherethey were in relation to the rocks. Verse 39indicates that even the next day when itwas light, they had no idea where theywere. It was an impossible situation indeed!

The impending danger only seemed toheighten as they took soundings (v.28) anddiscovered that they were in water twenty

fathoms deep. A fathom is about six feet—about the distance between the tips of yourfingers with your arms outstretched.Twenty fathoms then is about 120 feetdeep. A little later the depth was checkedagain, and it was found to be fifteen fath-oms. Gradually the ship was movingtoward the land. Verse 29 records that thesailors let down four anchors because theyfeared the ship would smash into the rocks.

Fear can be a crippling emotion. Maybeyou’ve experienced the paralysis of fear. Onthe other hand, fear can cause an adrena-line rush and enable you to make it througha crisis. That seems to be the case in this sit-uation. The sailors had the presence ofmind to cast four anchors from the stern(the back of the boat). The hope was that,as they got closer to shore, those anchorswould take hold and keep the boat fromcrashing into the rocks. Then they simplywished for daybreak. All they could do waswait.

Sometimes life is like that. You’ve donewhat you can do, and now you just have toput your trust in the Lord and hope for thebest. Bill Gaither wrote a wonderful songcalled “Joy Comes in the Morning.” Hetook that phrase from Psalm 30:5, whichsays, “Weeping may endure for a night, butjoy comes in the morning” (NKJV). Whentrouble comes, look for daybreak to dispelthe darkness. It may be a literal daybreak,or it may be enlightenment in your soulwhere God begins to show you what is hap-pening in your life. Joy comes in themorning—hang on for the day!

Once when I was pastoring in Orlando Ireceived a phone call from a distraughtmother in Minneapolis. She was a singleparent and had a son who was very rebel-

lious. He was seventeen and had run awaywith a friend, hitchhiking to Florida. Uponarriving, they had gotten involved with thewrong people, had gotten into drugs, andwere eventually arrested. At the time hismother called me he was in a juveniledetention center in Orlando, and she wasplanning to fly down for a meeting with thecourt-appointed attorney. Somebody hadgiven her my name, and she was calling tofind out if I could be of any help. This dearmother was in the grip of despair and wasfearing the worst.

I met her at the airport and accompa-nied her to the meeting with the attorney,as well as the hearing before the judge. Herson’s rebellion had placed him in a periloussituation and she was apprehensive abouthis future. She knew the Lord and wastrusting in Him, but circumstances wereoverwhelming. As it turned out, the judgewas lenient with her son, although he didorder an extended time of detention. Afterthe son was released, however, he returnedto Minneapolis. I lost track of them afterthat—and even though I don’t know theend of the story, I will never forget the tur-moil in this mother’s heart throughout thatexperience.

You probably know how it is to receivebad news. Fear grips your heart and youwonder. What do I do? You get a phonecall. There’s been a car accident, or there’sbeen a sudden death in your family. You sitthere numb and decimated. Yet, SecondTimothy 1:7 says, “For God has not givenus a spirit of fear, but of power and of loveand of a sound mind” (NKJV). It doesn’t sayyou won’t be afraid. It’s natural to havefears, but those fears are not from God.They are part of the natural reaction of a

heart that is caught in the limitations ofhumanity. We are afraid in times like that,and naturally we cry.

It’s helpful to remember, however, thatGod doesn’t give a spirit of fear. The NewAmerican Standard Bible translates it “aspirit of timidity.” Someone with a spirit oftimidity backs off from trouble and is crip-pled by fear. God doesn’t give us that kindof a spirit—He gives us a spirit of courage. Ilove the words that are used in 2 Timothy1:7. It says that God gives us a spirit ofpower—spiritual strength in the midst ofadversity. He gives us a spirit of love; Heenables us to see things in a positive lightand to look for solutions. He gives us asound mind to think logically and sensiblyas we work our way through the problem.

Courage is not the absence of fear;courage is the control of fear. It is workingthrough the fearful situation. God promisesto help us in the midst of our circumstanceswhen we depend upon Him. When wereach out to the Lord, He will give us a spir-it of courage to strengthen us in anyadversity. He will reinforce a positive spiritto look to Him for available options. Godwill give us a sound mind to think throughwhat is the best course of action.

At the beginning of the book of Joshua,when Joshua was set to lead Israel acrossthe Jordan River to conquer the land ofCanaan, he had every human reason to fear.The nation had spent forty years in thedesert because the Israelites had been afraidof the giants, to say nothing of the fortifiedcities scattered throughout the land. NowGod was calling Joshua to lead the nextgeneration of the children of Israel acrossthe Jordan to conquer Canaan. They weregoing into the same land with the same

giants and the same fortified cities that hadcrippled the previous generation with fear.Yet, God said to Joshua, “Have I not com-manded you? Be strong and of goodcourage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed,for the LORD your God is with you wher-ever your go” (Joshua 1:9, NKJV).

That’s what you and I need to hear intimes of distress. Do not be afraid! Be strongand of good courage, for the Lord your Godis with you. Let the Lord strengthen youand give you courage to overcome yourfear. Let Him give you a positive spirit andan ability to think reasonably about yourcircumstances. ■

During the days of theReformation in the 16thCentury AD, there was arenewed interest in givingthe common people the

Bible in their own language. Previously, theChurch had been the guardian of theScripture, which was available only in Latin,the official language of the Church. In addition,due to an increasing popular demand forcopies of the bible, printers began to produceexpensive artistic editions that would appealto the more affluent members of society. Thesetwo strands of thought, the Scriptures in thevernacular and an ornate presentation of theprinted text, are brought together in the LutherBible of August of Saxony. This is one of thetreasures of The Van Kampen Collection at theScriptorium in Orlando, Florida.

The August of Saxony Bible is a two-volumeedition, translated into German by MartinLuther, and published by Hans Luft of Marburgand Worms in 1560-61. Hans Luft had printedthe first complete Luther Bible in 1534, and hecontinued to work with Luther throughout thecourse of Luther’s life, publishing his Germantranslations of the Bible.

Known for its sheer magnificence andexcellent workmanship, the August of SaxonyBible almost defies description. It was printedin two folio-sized volumes, not on paper, but onvellum or animal skin. The binding was in blackvelvet with silver clasps and ornately engravedcorner pieces depicting sixteen scenes fromthe Scriptures. It had been commissionedbetween 1558-61 by Herzog August, ElectoralDuke of Saxony. The title page, including theDuke’s coat of arms, was followed by theDuke’s portrait painted by the artist Virgil Solis.

The Van Kampen Collection copy is the onethat the Duke presented to Wilhelm, Duke ofBrunswick-Luneberg and his wife in 1569. The

coats of arms of both Duke August and DukeWilhelm were included on the cover of the book.

When we peruse the pages of this magnifi-cent book, its beauty nearly overwhelms us.This Bible contains one hundred and seventyprinted and hand-painted woodcuts done byGeorge Limburger and Hans Broader. Twenty ofthe woodcuts appear in the Prophetical booksand an astonishing thirty-seven were used toillustrate the book of the Revelation. The vivid-ness and color of these woodcuts can makeone imagine that he is standing beside theApostle John himself when he was given theapocalyptic visions on the isle of Patmos.

The scarcity of copies is another distin-guishing mark of this edition. Only eight ofthese books had been catalogued before theoutbreak of the Second World War, five ofwhich had been printed in less lavish editions.These five were catalogued in German librariesand some may have perished as a result of thewar. A sixth copy, held by the British Library, isthe extremely rare edition of 1561, the sameedition as the Van Kampen copy.

We know of only one other copy of the1560-61 edition printed on vellum. It also wasa presentation copy. On August 6, 1564, DukeAugust presented it to his financial secretary,Johann Pyrner, with the admonition “to read itwith diligence.” However the woodcuts con-tained in this copy were unpainted. All of thispoints to the fact that The Van KampenCollection copy, with its vellum pages and col-ored woodcuts, is perhaps the only survivingcopy of its kind in the world.

Thus, we have the two diverse means ofpresenting the Word of God joined together. Onthe one hand, we have the Word of God in atranslation that was prepared for all German-speaking people, including the peasant class.On the other hand, the August of Saxony edi-tion was printed in such a lavish format that it

was priced far beyond the ability of the aver-age person to buy it. Its ornate binding, silverclasps, vellum pages and brilliant woodcutsmake it totally unique. It is this combination ofthe common language and the ornate produc-tion that reminds us that the Word of God,while capable of being translated into thecommon language, is also the royal proclama-tion of the King of Kings. Therefore, theScriptures are worthy of being preserved in themost lavish format imaginable. ■

A WORD FROM THEWORD

Con men have elaborateschemes to delude theirprey. The idea behind a conis to make something looklegitimate when in actuality

it is not. So care is taken to cover every poten-tial loophole and answer every possibleobjection. Good con artists are smooth andarticulate in the way they present their oppor-tunity to unwary prospects, and they often givethe impression that to question anything is theheight of foolishness. It’s not until the cons arelong gone and the dupe is left holding the bagthat the real truth begins to dawn—“I’ve beenhad!” It’s an unsettling experience to beconned—a person is stripped of his or her dig-nity and most often left in an emotional heapof despair.

Well, there is a word in the New Testamentthat describes this kind of an experience. It isthe word “deceive,” which is sometimes trans-lated “beguile” or “delude.” This is the wordused by Paul when warning the believers inThessalonica. He says, “Let no one in any waydeceive you, for it will not come unless theapostasy comes first, and the man of lawless-ness is revealed, the son of destruction” (2Thessalonians 2:3).

Now the particular thing the Thessalonianswere being deceived about is what Paul hadreferred to as the “Day of the Lord” judgment(v. 2). The Thessalonian Christians were experi-encing a major persecution from their owncountrymen for their faith in Christ. So theywere under the impression that the end timeshad come and the persecution they were expe-riencing was the persecution Paul had talkedabout. Others had tried to convince them ofthis too (vs. 1-2), but it was all a great delusion.They were being conned.

The word “deceive” in this verse is not thesimple word for deceive. It is the basic verb

apatao, which means “to deceive, cheat, ormislead.” But the Greek preposition ek- isadded to the front of this verb to stress com-pleteness. In other words, the word exapataoliterally has the idea of being completely delud-ed—wholly seduced, utterly conned. They werein danger of being shaken in their composureand very disturbed (v. 2) if they did not see theruse. They were being tricked into thinkingsomething was true when it really wasn’t.

There was a way out, however. There isalways a way out of a con game—and that is byknowing the truth. The Day of the Lord judg-ment had not come (v. 2) and there were twoindications of that. First, the apostasy (or fallingaway from the faith) had not happened yet;and second, the man of sin (or “antichrist”)had not yet been revealed. Knowing those twopieces of information unmasked the fraud andgave the Thessalonians the proper perspective

on what was happening.Well we also are susceptible to deception

just like the Thessalonian believers.We need toknow the truth of God’s Word if we are not to beblindsided by various erroneous practices anddoctrines, including the timing of end-timeevents. Con men have been crying “wolf” forsome time now—but the perceptive student ofGod’s Word will see the telltale marks of truthand not be taken in by their fraud. A patient,persevering spirit of study will enable anyChristian to be unashamed as to an accuratehandler of the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

To be deceived and deluded is to end upbeing ashamed and shaken. Oh that we wouldbe careful to know the truth so that we will beable to see with the eyes of Christ. Don’t beblindsided by the con man. Be alert andunderstanding through the careful study ofGod’s Word. ■

Truth for today

’ve been an amateur musician for manyyears. Like many amateurs, I got to a point where I played well enough toenjoy music for my own purposes, and stayed there for a long while. I was

aware of musicians who were much betterthan I was, but it didn’t really matter becauseI was “good enough for me.” Then I met Rick.Rick was a nurse in the Army when we firstmet, but the thing that linked us together washis ability to play the guitar. We would gettogether to do music on many occasions, andI was always amazed at how well he played.He was not a professional musician, in that heplayed mostly for enjoyment, but he couldplay better than anyone I had ever met! Ibegan to get a little restless with my abilities,and asked Rick for suggestions on how tomove to another level. He suggested that I goto a guitar camp, a week long, intensivecourse of study with professional musicianswho provide enough material to carry onethrough an entire year of musical growth ifapplied properly. I decided to attend a campthe following summer that met in the littletown of Merryville, Tennessee, even though Ibelieved that I would be the worst player thereand that the efforts of the teachers would bewasted on my abilities. From the first day atcamp, I realized that it was indeed a specialplace. Players of nearly every skill ability hadcome from across the world to learn how toplay the guitar better. Organized “jam” ses-sions where from 5 to 15 musicians ofdiffering skill level would gather to play musicserved to both encourage and showcase therange of abilities of the players. Several class-es each day with professional guitaristspresented a wealth of information designed toaid the aspiring musician. Nightly concertshighlighted the instructors and some of themore skilled attendees with music that

was absolutely amazing.Throughout the week, onequestion seemed to be onthe tips of the tongues ofthe attendees. That ques-tion: “How do you DOthat?”After demonstratingparts of songs thatseemed only playable by aperson that has eight fin-gers on each hand, theanswer that was givennearly every time boileddown to one word—practice. Fortunately, theanswer did not stop there.Nearly everyone at theCamp understood theidea of practicing, but it isin the method of practic-ing that one is able toapproach the abilities we were witnessing,and there was much discussion in that area.

Now, think about your life… specificallyyour Spiritual life. What correlations can youdraw to the situation described above? Formany, Spiritual growth has taken place atsome time or another, yet there are often timesof extended plateau. We consider our growth,knowledge and witness and think to our-selves… “I know most of the stories andtheology of the Bible well enough to discussthem on a basic level. I’ve read several booksby the big-name Christian authors. I attendChurch and sometimes I go to a SundaySchool meeting… I’m good enough for me!”Our lives find a comfortable path of minimalresistance, where our abilities are met square-ly with challenges in a fairly even contest ofpush and pull. Then something happens… youmeet a “Rick” of your own. Perhaps it is a co-worker, or a neighbor, or boyfriend, or

girlfriend. Perhaps it is your pastor, or a small-group leader in your church. Or perhaps youare prompted when you hear or read the Wordof God, encouraging you to go beyond yourabilities. Whoever or whatever the reason,something causes you to desire a deeper, rich-er, more meaningful relationship with Christ,and you begin to wonder just how you canachieve it? Is there a “guitar camp” forBelievers? Many will find encouragement inseminars and conferences sponsored by min-istries and churches that take place all acrossthe country. Others find that regular participa-tion in a small-group or Bible study serves asimilar purpose. Still, the ultimate answer isthe same as it is for those at guitar camp…practice. Philippians 2:12 encourages us inthis manner: “So then, my beloved, just as youhave always obeyed, not as in my presenceonly, but now much more in my absence, workout your salvation with fear and trembling…”

The idea here of “working out” holds the samegeneral idea as practice—so the issue thenbecomes how do we practice so as to improveand move forward?

When presented with this question atcamp, I noticed the professionals recommend-ed four aspects of practicing. The first aspectis to practice with focus. Most musicians whofind little value in practicing do not concen-trate their efforts. They will work on one thingone day, then another the next day, and thenspend several days doing scales, then stopdoing them for weeks. This kind of practicingdoes not usually result in over all improvementbecause we humans tend to forget thingsquickly. A focused effort requires a dedicatedtime period wherein specific aspects of playingare consistently rehearsed in an orderly fash-ion. First warm up, then scales, then songswe’re trying to perfect, then songs we’re tryingto learn, then sight-reading, and so on. In thesame manner, one who seeks to grow spiritu-ally requires focus—setting aside a time periodand guarding it against all of the things thatget in the way. It is a good idea to create a sys-tem that incorporates meditation, reading,study, and prayer in a way that allows us togrow in those areas. I learned a method ofBible study many years ago called the ABCDmethod. Read a passage of scripture some-where between 4 and 10 verses, then write afew words that sum up what the passage isAbout, followed by writing what you feel is theBest verse that communicates this Truth toyou, followed by a few lines that capture whatthe verses Communicated to you, and finishwith a short written prayer of Dedication toGodly living and action. There are other meth-ods that will help you to focus your efforts inthis area, as well as books, study Bibles andpamphlets you can find at your local Christianbook store.

The second emphasis to practicing betteris to be slow and deliberate. Often, the per-formers could play a melody or part withlightening speed and accuracy. Most studentslearn the basic notes, and then try to play thenotes at the same speed as the pros—losing

almost all of the accuracy. The solution: prac-tice the part very slowly until every note iscorrect, and then slowly increase speed, eachtime ensuring accuracy before anotherincrease. This takes weeks or months for someparts, but once the desired speed is attained,accuracy is there also. In the same way, wemust not be impatient as we seek to growSpiritually. In a recent small group Bible study,we were studying a book that uses Paul’sJourney to Rome in Acts 27 and 28 to teachabout dealing with difficult times. Each chap-ter covers somewhere between 3 and 6 verses,yet the book is never boring or dull. In fact, amember of the group said recently “I neverdreamed that there could be so much goodstuff in only a few verses! How does the authordo it?” We are a goal-oriented society, and wemeasure our progress often by how much wedo rather than how accurately we do things.Studying the Bible takes time, and there is noprize for finishing a complete chapter in twodays. Rather, the prize goes to the person whomost completely understands the Truth as it istaught in Scripture. Slow and deliberateprogress will serve to strengthen the founda-tion upon which we build our lives.

The third aspect of practice is to under-stand the value of a good teacher. A goodteacher can encourage, instruct, protect andchallenge their students. They can demon-strate the proper way to play a line of notes,and can help a student to reach beyond theircapabilities to accomplish more difficult

tasks. One trip to the bookstore will demon-strate our penchant for self help. Books andpamphlets abound that tell us that we canlearn to do a whole host of things without anyadditional help. One in particular advertised:“Learn to play the guitar in only three weeks—avoid the high cost of a private teacher!” I’veworked with students who tell me that theystarted out with these books, and most saythat after several days, they lost interest andstopped trying. Motivation and encouragementis part of it I am sure, but a good teacher canmake a world of difference.Almost every one ofthe professionals at camp could point to ateacher who launched their professionalcareers. Spiritually, we are no different. A solidpreacher or Bible teacher can make an amaz-ing difference in a Christian’s life. I remembermoving to Chicago years ago and searching fora Church. My wife and I tried many where thepeople were very nice and the services werethe right blend of traditional and contempo-rary that we enjoyed. The pastors deliveredmessages that did not offend and were whatwe had come to expect in a nearly ecumenicalChurch setting. Then we attended a churchthat met in a remodeled home. It was new, andso did not have the established choir andyouth programs we looked for. It was small,and so did not have the wealth of people fromwhich to draw for projects and ministries. Butthe pastor taught from the Bible in a way thatcaptured hearts and minds. He spoke aboutdoctrine that was difficult to accept because it

group, I learned that I had been playing themusic much too slowly, and that I had notmaintained a solid rhythm throughout thesong. I had slowed down just a little during thedifficult parts, and when I had to play with thegroup, low and behold, they kept on playing ata steady pace, leaving me struggling to keepup. Playing with friends helps us to try outthose things we’ve been working on and seehow our part fits into the entire song. It givesus feedback on our efforts, and lets us learnfrom what others are doing. It prepares us toplay with people we might not know, when thepressure is on. Spiritually, playing with friendsequates to joining a fellowship of believers,either a Church or small group or Bible Study,where we can participate to the limits of ourabilities. We can share our difficulties and oursuccesses.We can ask questions.We can learn

from what others are going through. Scripturetells us that we must not fail to fellowship withother Believers because we learn and growthrough that experience. Nothing else can pro-vide the benefit of this gathering together withfriends.

Focus. Seek slow and deliberate progress.Find a good teacher. Spend quality time withfriends. And if you are one who thinks that youare “good enough” right now, then pray for a“Rick” to come into your life so that you can beexposed to what you are missing. Each of usshould seek to be constantly maturing in ourFaith, becoming more and more like Christwith each passing day. If you desire this andwonder how to make it a reality, then remem-ber what the concert guitarist said to thestudent when asked, “How do you get toCarnegie Hall?” The answer: “Practice!” ■

Question: Ken, if Noah’s Ark, carrying representatives of all kinds of landanimals, landed in the Middle East in the mountains of Ararat, then how didkangaroos ever get to your homeland?

Ken Ham’s Answer: Well, the simplest answer is: they hopped!Seriously, I believe there’s actually an easy solution to this. Scientists

have found lots of evidence that about one third of the Earth’s surface hasbeen covered by ice. There’s evidence, for example, that large glaciers oncecarved the Great Lakes in North America. Creationists believe that this “iceage” occurred sometime after the Flood—because of the Flood. With warmwater, cool land, and ash in the atmosphere blocking out sun light at theend of the Flood—there would be a lot of evaporation. The precipitationwould come in the form of ice and snow.

The build up of ice and snow would lower oceans by 150 feet or more—forming land bridges all over the Earth. This would enable animals likekangaroos to migrate to different parts around the Earth. That’s the simpleanswer!

did not agree with our previous teaching, andafter one week I couldn’t imagine going backagain. But each Sunday, my wife and I weredrawn back to this fellowship to hear the Wordpreached because it touched a place in ourSpirits as nothing else could. As we look backon those years, there is no doubt that we grewmore spiritually at that time than in any othertime in our lives. Finally, the last aspect of practice that Ilearned is to play with friends from time totime. Before going to camp, I had receivedmusic and practiced it as best I could so thatI would be able to participate in “jam ses-sions” with other players. I thought I had donea pretty fair job of learning the music, butwhen it came time for me to play with the

It’s Christmas morning. Slowly she peels back the gift-wrapping. It’s her fourth and final gift from him this season. The aroma of expensive ground coffee fills the room. There’s a note. “10 days of

breakfast in bed and 6 months of coffee byyour bedside.” Personal sacrifice. She smiles.It’s a newlywed’s first Christmas. Five years andtwo children later, it’s a new non-stick pan (thecheaper version) and a bottle of bubble bath.There’s a note. “Enjoy your bath, and try torelax.” She smiles. Eight years, three childrenand a puppy later, it’s a gift card to a depart-ment store in a note.“Dear Susan, buy yourselfsomething nice. You’re the best, love Jeff.”

It seems that Americans strive to makethings as easy as possible and giving gifts is noexception. This Christmas season we will stim-ulate our economy by spending billions ofdollars on gifts, many of which will becomenext year’s garage sale items. If you’re like me,you have your list of people for whom you wishto purchase gifts, and if you’re lucky, you’llcover them all in one trip to Hallmark. Thetragedy is that as our giving has moved frompersonal sacrifice to material giving, the sea-son has shifted emphasis from being aboutChrist to being about gift giving. In this, we’vemissed the whole point.

Jesus, at tremendous personal sacrifice,left the perfection of Heaven to be born intothis world as a human. He voluntarily set aside

His Godly attributes and had to depend onintimacy with the Father and empowermentfrom the Holy Spirit, just like you and me. Hegave all of Himself to us so that He could showus that He was “with” us and that He under-stood us. Then, He died to pay for OUR sins.

When we give this season, it should be tohonor Jesus.We should give more of our selvesand less of our things. An overdue hug, thathard phone call to say I’m sorry, a smile whenit’s undeserved, that perfect parking space tothe car behind you in line or perhaps sharingthe message of the gospel with a person whohas not heard it before. This Christmas, let’shonor God by being bold in our giving and bymaking it personal. ■
