Prayer list

The current prayer list has been growing steadily over several

years, with some names being on it a long time. It has always

been intended for us to pray at services for people who

particularly need our prayers at that time, but the ministry team

often don't know when to take somebody off it if they haven't

added the name.

If you want to put a name on the new list, please phone Jean

Nicholson on 0161 330 6072.

If you want to keep a name on the list after that, you will need

to ring Jean before the Wednesday which proceeds the first

Sunday of the next month. New names can be accepted at any

time during the month and will stay on until the end of that

month, after which they can be renewed in the same way.

Prayer Circle

We have a dedicated group of people who pray daily in their

homes for the sick and needy of our parish. This is done

confidentially and only the Prayer Circle is aware of the people

on the list. If you wish somebody (this person must have given

permission) to have their name included, please inform Mary

Davies either in church or by telephone (0161 330 7974). Mary

will need a contact telephone number so she can contact you a

month later in order to see whether you wish for the person

to stay on the Prayer Circle.

Lord Show the Way

Lord be in the words I speak

And clear the way for stumbling feet.

Fill my life with thoughts of You

And turn my grey skies into blue.

Please be part of me each day

So I may never go astray.

Through the dark till morning light

Let me sleep on through the night.

Dreamless slumber in Your care

Knowing that you’re always there,

To keep me safe from childhood fear

As He my God draws ever near.

CHOIR PILGRIMAGE 2nd MARCH 2013

Our choir pilgrimage began at St. Michael and All Angel's Parish Church of Ashton-under-Lyne. Led by our Church organist and choir mistress Lesley Bunce, we were welcomed by the Rev. Roger Reece. We began with an introit, Word of God Renew Your People. This was followed by Prayers and an introduction to the Psalms read by Philip Blanchard.

The songs were:-

1; Let Nothing Trouble You or Frighten You.(Bernadette Farrell )

2; Adoramus Te, Domine Deus

3; Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer

4; I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say 2 verses (words from Psalm 122)

Singing in this Church was a wonderful experience, uplifting and Peaceful. We made our way to the Albion URC Ashton-under-Lyne, welcomed by the organist Derek. The introit was Word of Peace and Word of Justice followed by prayers and words from Psalms 123, 124, 125 and 2 verses of I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say. (Words from Psalm 122) The songs were;-

5; Restless is The Heart.

6;Psalm 121 chant Walford Davies. Each verse beginning with a solo myself Lead Soprano and Philip Blanchard Lead Bass/Baritone and then full choir.

7; The Peace Of The Earth Be With You.

8; Sing Of The Lord's Goodness. (Words from Psalms 127 and 128) accompanied with tambourines by our Junior Choir. Singing in this Church was a similar experience to St Michaels.

Our next port of call was Stalybridge Methodist Church, where we were welcomed by Rev. Keith Sandow and a very enthusiastic audience, who were so impressed with our singing. The introit was By Your Name You Call Us Onward, Make us now Your Living Sign, followed by prayers and words from Psalms 129, 130 and 131, and 2verses of I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say, (words from Psalm 122) The songs were;-

9; O Lord Please Hear My Prayer Mark Hogan.

10; Steal Away

Page 15: Christ Church Magazine February 2014

15

11; On a Hill Far Away (The Old Rugged Cross) which was delightfully sung by our Junior Choir, Jose 12yrs Hannah 11yrs and 10yr old Lauren.

This was another lovely Church to sing in with the added extra of an audience which was gratefully appreciated.

Our lunch was at Heroes of Waterloo Ashton-u-Lyne, where we were able to relax and replenish ourselves with lovely homemade food, also being able to chat to each other without rushing.

Our last venue was Hurst Methodist Church Ashton-u-Lyne where we were welcomed by the key holder, as the Minister was otherwise engaged. We were joined by Philip Thompson one of our Tenors/Bass', who came to lunch but due to sickness was unable to travel to all the destinations, so it was wonderful that he could join in singing at the end of the Pilgrimage. The introit was Cross of Jesus all Embracing, Make us now Your Living Sign, followed by prayers and words from Psalms 132, 133 and 134 and 2 verses of I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say (Words from Psalm 122)

The songs were;

12; Brother Sister Let Me Serve You

13; Amazing Grace sung by myself (Kath Nawaz) as Gloria Crane was unable to attend.

14; Bless the Lord

15; To God be the Glory

Two members of our congregation May Foreman and the wonderful Mary Mirfin (93yrs young) came to support us as they always do. This was our first experience of a Pilgrimage, which we hope will not be our last. I think the experience was most rewarding. It gave me a feeling of Spiritual confidence and Joy being able to sing in other Churches, hearing the different sounds of music and knowing it was our choir giving the Great Joy of music to God and His People. I'm sure that we all felt the same.

Ten Minutes Peace!

Space to chill. Do you never get a spare minute, and spend most of your time running around for other people? Wouldn’t it be nice to take time out just for yourself? Maybe you could just do with a few minutes to collect your thoughts and reflect upon your day.

If you’re looking for a quiet, welcoming place to sit and relax, why not pop along to an ‘Open Church’ session here at Christ Church? Anyone can come along to sit in silence and relax, enjoy a cup of tea or have private prayers with one of the ministers. There is no structure to the sessions so it is up to you how long you stay.

The church will be open on

Thursday 27th February 5pm-6.30pm and

Friday 28th February 9am-10.30am.

You don’t have to be Christian or have any religious faith to use the facilities.

Christ Church Music Ministry

Do you enjoy singing? Play a flute, clarinet etc.?

Why not join us?

You are welcome as a singer or instrumentalist for our church choir.

We are especially looking for additional talented adult male voices and more members for our Youth Section both boys and girls.

Paw prints in the Snow

Feline paw prints mark the snow Could this be someone we know? Black and white with furry coat It’s Sidney Kat who is the most. He doesn’t like the cold or wet This very pampered feline pet.

The sight of snow he does abhor And wonders what the snow is for.

Though summer’s flown he knows a place Where he can sit and wash his face.

He always likes to look his best And be a cut above the rest.

Posing on his window seat The radiator pumping heat.

He watches snowflakes as they fall Upon that crumbling garden wall. He’s not so worried at the sight As he will be at home all night.

Headquarters and Hideouts

Excitement reached a crescendo as dozens of the newly formed Newcastle Street gang raced through the darkened passages of the never to be forgotten air raid shelters. What a boon these shelters were. A place to play out our fantasies as we made full use of these concrete installations. They served us well as gang headquarters and hideouts.

The world was still in the thick of World War 2 but it didn’t seem to bother us at all. Most of us were left to our own devices for hours at a time. So we just ran wild.

There wasn’t all the destruction we see today. The people in the terraced houses were all the same and didn’t seem to have anything worth pinching or destroying.

We, as a newly formed gang, were more interested in who could skip the longest or who could run the fastest round the block and back again. Of course we threw challenges out to other street gangs when we were sure we could beat them. A bit tame by today’s standards.

When I took time to pause from my gang duties, my mind returned to my Grandma Kate Elizabeth and my Grandad Chubb and to the caravan in the country and wondered how they could possibly manage without me. As I was still too young to choose for myself, I would have to wait until my mother packed me off for as long as possible....to get me from under her feet she said.

Page 21: Christ Church Magazine February 2014

21

Even though I was becoming more street wise, I didn’t realise I was just in the way. But my dreams of being with my grandparents were always with me and gave me something to hang on to when the world seemed dark and I, Gypsy Smith, was put to one side and told not to be a nuisance to my parents who were caught up in the never ending war effort.

I wondered at the time if it was a good idea to grow up and join the people who never had time to spare to share a problem with their growing families. Of course being a miner’s daughter I wasn’t supposed to know anything anyway. Times have changed and girls have more choices. A bit late for Gypsy Smith, the walking wounded of the Second World War.

‘Hey EWE'

On Tuesday 10th December my wife, Carol, and I were

invited to the Canon Johnson Nativity Play – ‘Hey EWE' -

along with most of the senior members of Christ Church

congregation. This was the dress rehearsal for the

children, prior to the performances for their parents and

family members.

To say that the experience was good would be a

massive understatement, they were wonderful, very

well-rehearsed and well above the standard that I

would have expected for such a young group of

performers. The story is well known but the children

really told it marvellously and with a great deal of

enthusiasm. This I feel sure is down to a lot of hard work,

not only by the children, but the teachers, who must

have spent many hours getting them up to this very

high standard.

I feel that I can speak, not only for myself, but for all of

us ancients, in saying how much we enjoyed the

performance and also the cup of tea/coffee and

mince pies that were served to us by the very attentive

and beautifully mannered pupils of the school.

A very heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for the

invitation and for a wonderful time.

Be Thankful to the Lord... Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don't know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you're tired and weary, because it means you've made a difference. It's easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfilment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

Limitless Sky

Whirling in an unlimited vortex of space

The sky is a truly wonderful vacant place.

Where asteroids, comets, planets and stars,

Show the way to get to Mars.

Jupiter appears just on the right.

All this is enacted every single night

Its vastness overwhelming our imagination

And we still can’t fathom an explanation

If people exist as they do on earth

Or is it just an emptiness without any worth?

Where is Dad?

Memories still churn in my head of the time we were

engulfed in a horrible world war.

I seem to come into a family of mum and an older

brother and father serving his country, in khaki, in the

Orkneys, who came home now and then on leave,

bringing us bags of Hall’s Devon creams.

One night, being woken up in our little back bedroom

by stones clattering on our window – looking out, it

was my dad who had come home on leave

unexpectedly and was climbing over the barred gate

in his khaki battledress.

Another time, my mum paraded my dad in front of me

saying ‘what’s your dad done differently? I couldn’t

see anything that had changed, he was still the same

old dad in his army uniform, then she told me, ‘can’t

you see? He’s shaved his moustache off’! It wasn’t

very long before he grew it back though.

There were many rejoicing when Germany finally

capitulated, but my father still remained in the REME,

Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, and when we

Page 29: Christ Church Magazine February 2014

29

had gone to Northern Ireland for a holiday near

Belfast with my auntie, we were forced to return

home quickly, for my dad was put on the invasion

fleet destined to invade the island of Sumatra. We had

to say our goodbyes on his embarkation leave, not

expecting to see him again because over 50%

casualties were expected.

God intervened for us, and Japan finally surrendered

when the atom bomb was dropped on the island and

dad finally returned, smartly dressed in a Blue striped

demob suit and blue trilby, and my dad was back

home for another 34 years.
