"None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful." – Mother Teresa

I recently found out that I needed to write a Senior Warden Annual Report and I was apprehensive about doing it. After asking around, it was suggested by those with experience writing these reports, you go back over Vestry agendas and minutes and you make a list of all the things that we accomplished last year. Somehow, you sum those things up on one page. Well there were over 30 events or projects on my list when I was done and that is why I started this report with the quote from Mother Teresa. As a Vestry and a Congregation, we accomplished many small things and when you combine that with our first year with Father Daniel and Ashley, you end up with a historic, ground-breaking ,memorable, something wonderful kind of 2018! It all started on a cold, dark and rainy night in January when the Londons raced up the highway trying to beat the moving vans. A few days later, Father Daniel celebrated his first Sunday at Christ Episcopal and over the course of the coming months, they settled into the Transfiguration House and made it their own. February brought the first Vestry meeting and many other weekly meetings as Father Daniel hit the ground running. I would be several months later that we would officially celebrate our new beginning together at the Celebration of New Ministry on April 20th. The beautiful service featured a sermon by the Rev. Dr. Arthur Holder, who is a Professor of Christianity Spirituality as well as an Associate Priest at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Benicia and a mentor and professor of Father Daniel’s. Symbolic gifts that represented the different ministries were exchanged, the church was filled with music and the dove flew over us all. Our new Compline service started on Tuesday nights in May and during June and July we hosted the Music and Arts Camp, the 10th anniversary of the Kegg Organ concert, the end of the year picnic, participated in Camp Living Waters and honored Hannah Hogan with a $500.00 scholarship from the Helen Person Memorial Scholarship Fund. We continued to pick up steam in the Fall as we initiated the Take Action Table, our Stewardship Campaign, played in a bouncy house at our “Bounce Back to Church” picnic, welcomed Father David Shewmaker as our associate priest and listened to the Scotia Band fill our sacred space with lively marches and blessed our animals in the chapel. In September, the vestry sat down in the dining room of the Transfiguration House and to our surprise, quickly drafted our new mission statement. I know you have heard it but it bears repeating:

We seek to glorify God, follow Jesus Christ, and serve all people

through the power of the Holy Spirit. As lay leaders we are also committed to make all decisions regarding the church with our mission statement in mind. In November, we celebrated Thanksgiving with a service and dinner, we continued to work on our new parish directory and we made progress on both our Welcome Brochure and the Father Doug Memorial Library and just like that we were heading into the Advent and Christmas season.

I hope during the very busy season we had, you were able to attend Lessons and Carols, Choral Compline, the Christmas Eve Family Service or what I now call the O Holy Night service that I talked about in my last chronicle article. The church was filled with energy, hope and some new faces and everyone involved worked so hard to make Father Daniel’s first Christmas celebration one he will never forget. Speaking of hard workers, I would like to wrap up my report by thanking those people who work behind the scenes, and of course those on the frontline, that make Christ Church Eureka the “Cathedral of the North”. If you are part of the Clergy, serve on the altar, prepare the altar, serve as an usher, on the Vestry, on a committee, pay our bills, take the minutes, serve as a musician, a counter, help in the office, prepare coffee hour, host meals, clean our campus, worship at Saints Martha and Mary, ring the bells, deliver produce, volunteer at Betty Chinn’s, pledge, attend church regularly or even attend occasionally, you are important. Thank you for all the small things you do, with great love, that make our church wonderful. And here’s to more wonderful things to come in 2019!

As Junior Warden, in charge of the building and maintenance of Christ Episcopal Church Eureka, it was a busy year. So much was accomplished, I hope that there is room to list everything. We had 3 work days (2 outside and 1 inside) this year and that is when so much of the following projects were done: New signs that were posted around the church include: "emergency exits", "no dumping" and "occupancy" signs. A new lock box was installed in the office. The cracked window in the Chapel was replaced. The sump pump in the basement was replaced along with a new drainage pipe outside. The cross that was blown off the steeple is being repaired. The Father Doug Memorial Library is preparing to open soon. The Southwest side of the church, office and chapel buildings were re-painted The Pierson Room has new flooring Water leak alarms were installed The hanging speakers/microphones in the Nave were removed The Brass cross above the Altar was polished Loose organ boards were repaired/replaced. Our wonderful gardening group continued to maintain our lovely grounds this year. The rust spots on our new gate were "touched up" The outside windows of the church, chapel and education building were all thoroughly cleaned The basement is cleared out regularly The church records room was moved to a new location An additional gate key box was installed. A new, longer mat was placed in front of the door from Lewis Hall to outside The outside steps were painted "safety yellow" The Belltower was cleaned out and the bells re-tuned Cement was poured just outside the vesting room to prevent mis-stepping,tripping/falling This just a partial list of all the wonderful work that was done by folks here at Christ Church. So much wonderful work is always being done all year long, that it is virtually impossible to list everything. But I wanted to try. As my term of Junior Warden, comes to an end, I'd like to thank the congregation of Christ Episcopal Church for their continued support and enthusiasm for taking care of our beautiful church buildings and grounds. I would also like to especially thank our Sexton John Hammond, Mother Lesley, Father Daniel, and Interim Senior Warden Jackie Moore for "having my back". Especially during this busy year. It has been a pleasure and my honor to have served as Junior Warden for the last two years. Thank you all so much. Respectfully submitted, Heidi Erickson, Jr Warden 2017-2018

Associate Priest The Rev. David Shewmaker

It has been with great joy that I have been offered & have accepted the position as Associate Priest at Christ Church Eureka. In the short time that I have been here I have done a few things of note:

I have formed a disaster preparations committee, which has met a few times and is moving forward on a few projects. Our mission is to determine and then to implement activities that will increase our abilities to surmount disasters when they occur. Examples of things we have considered are:

Handicap access improvement. Coordination with nearby churches in disaster response. Training for active shooter incidents. Coordinating with the DNC disaster response team. Assessment of our ability to shelter folks in response to disaster incidents.

I have been involved in Adult Christian Formation, having taught a series of classes about being good listeners, especially learning to listen to God (aka discernment.)

I have been involved with Tuesday night Compline & silent prayer. I have preached & presided. I am entering my second 3 year term on the Diocesan Board of Trustees. I am on the Semper Virens working group. I periodically preach around the Deanery.

I thank you all for the privilege of serving you to the extent of my ability during my retirement time. Keep me in your prayers, especially for my health & for my strength.

Vestry Candidate Statements

Lin Chase What attributes or talents will I bring to the Vestry? I believe I will bring my unique prospective and proven resolutions of many years of leadership positions at other churches in the Northern California and Oregon Dioceses including: Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, E C W President, Stewardship Chair, Community Outreach Committee, Convention Delegate, Eucharistic Minister, Acolyte, Lector and Choir. What ministries have you participated in? Within the past two of my six years at Christ Church the ministries I have participated in are: Eucharistic Minister, Acolyte, Community of the Transfiguration Candidate, Choir, Lector, Vestry, Convention Delegate, Betty Chinn Food Pick-up and Delivery Contact Person, Foster Friday Volunteer, and past temporary Clerk and Coffee Hour Host. Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? The areas of leadership that I believe I could contribute to grow and/or expand and advocate for are Outreach/Evangelism, Hospitality and Stewardship. Being a "cradle" Anglican/ Episcopalian, service in the Church has been my lifelong devotion and commitment to our Lord. I would very much enjoy being a part of our vestry in guiding Christ Church into an exciting future.

Katherine J. Clague What attributes or talents will I bring to the Vestry? I feel I have an open ear and mind, to listen to what is presented at the meetings and to whatever else is necessary to be discussed and voted on by a representative of the church. It is a big responsibility; but I have good organizational skills and knowledge, and love of Christ that I hope I can be worthy of the duty. What ministries have you participated in? I am the Director of the Altar Guild. And am an active member of the Worship, Finance and Stewardship Committees as well. Many people of the church have suggested I put up a cot in the Sacristy; because I am always there. Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? I find this question to be somewhat esoteric. I hope that with my position as director of the Altar Guild; I am helping the Clergy lead and guide the congregation in a fulfilling way to Love and serve the Lord. To be on the Vestry I feel I will become more aware of needs of Christ Church, and be an advocate for the congregation.

Kathleen Lake What attributes or talents will you bring to the Vestry? As a Speech Pathologist and Educational Administrator my role was to seek out and enable students and teachers to develop their strengths. My work and advocacy for students with a variety of disabilities (many profound,) as well as those who had experienced trauma and severe poverty provided me with years of active practice in advocating for the for the dignity and respect for every human being. Working towards connecting individuals and families with resources available and often creating new resources for individuals in need was a rewarding experience. I feel my skills in active listening, evaluating possibilities, and giving constructive and empowering feedback will be valuable as a member of the Vestry. What ministries have you participated in within the last two years at Christ Church?

Welcoming Committee Coffee Hour Committee Foster Friday Events Compline Gun Violence Racism Reconciliation Training

Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? Welcoming new community members Church/Youth Education Social Justice Ministries

More specifically I would like to work towards advocating for expanding: Welcoming all people who come to visit, or stay, to Christ Episcopal Church. Caring for the Church campus and grounds. Youth programs and Music and Arts events Work to continually evaluate how best to serve those in our community who are in need. Continuing with our strong variety of established supports, and by building continued new connections between our parish and community organizations. Hospitality Committee: Coffee Hour, Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Church Picnic and other events.

Bev Olson What attributes or talents will I bring to the Vestry? You ask of talents. That is hard for I am not really good at anything but I am there in the trenches willing to work. Over the past few years my relationship with God and the Church has grown much deeper and fulfilling to me and I just feel that there is a place for a worker bee as I. What ministries have you participated in? The only real ministry that I have participated in has been collecting food items place in the Food Bank box and seeing that whatever is there gets to the Food Bank. I also try to make mention of it in our monthly newsletter. Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? You ask of leadership qualities. I believe that I am pretty good with organization skills. I am treasurer of two non-profits in the area. If given a problem I can usually come up with some suggestions. We need to concentrate on getting younger families and children to the church. I don't know what I can offer there but I would really like to try.

Jannetje Vrieze What attributes or talents will you bring to the Vestry? I will bring a positive attitude and a commitment to being a team player to the Vestry. I'm an analytical yet creative thinker. We have a beautiful mission statement that is wonderful basis for problem-solving, decision making and taking action. I will rely on it to make prayerful, thoughtful and deliberate contributions as a Vestry member. What ministries have you participated in within the last two years at Christ Church? In the last two years I've participated as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the choir, as an usher and as a substitute for the group that packs up leftover food at St Joseph hospital's kitchen for transport to Betty Chinn's. In the past I've taught Sunday school and when I served on Vestry previously, I was responsible for scheduling and coordinating ushers. Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? I believe I can help in a variety of different areas including ensuring that the physical and fiscal needs of our beautiful facility are met, supporting the efforts of those who carry out the many ministries of the church, participating in outreach efforts and being of service to our community. This is a very exciting and dynamic time for our parish. It would be an honor to serve on the Vestry and help further our mission to glorify God, follow Jesus Christ and serve all people through the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for your consideration.

William P. (Bill) Walser What attributes or talents will you bring to the Vestry? Over the majority of my employment years situations requiring examination followed by decisions, sometimes in very short time, were common. That does not mean snap judgments; but the careful piecing together of facts as presented and either personally doing what was required, or locating the correct individual to take care of the issue. It also does not mean my findings were always correct, because as with all, I am fallible. During my first service on the Vestry two major events came about – i) the purchase of a beautiful, much needed, but expensive, organ, and, ii) the exit of our sitting Priest under difficult circumstances. Oh, there were many other matters that could be considered major, but not as consequential as the two here mentioned. At times my view of each issue differed from those of fellow Vestry members. Each matter was discussed, ultimate decisions were made, and all turned out in a positive light as time moved on. What I learned was the need to feel free to voice opinions, and to accept alternative views when presented. We come to the table with varying backgrounds, knowledge, and experience. All present need to be heard, allowing for a well-rounded decision. What ministries have you participated in within the last two years at Christ Church? Lector, Intercessor, bell ringer. Which leadership area do you believe you could help grow, expand, and be an advocate for? A couple areas come to mind – assist Lectors, Intercessors, and Announcers with presentation, and the safety of our campus and congregation. I have an undergraduate degree in Mass Communications, Broadcasting, which led to full time employment in commercial radio as a DJ and mid-management positions. Courses taken followed by professional experience guided me through the manner of conveying information in a meaningful, clear, and if needed, entertaining manner. Instructing/guiding others is enjoyable to me. I believe with simple hints here and there my experience will assist our Lectors, Intercessors, and Announcers

A) in delivering the Word of God. B) Public Safety full time and part-time has given me much background to share regarding our beautiful

campus, and a safe environment within. I do not have all the answers, but do know where to seek correct information if my knowledge lacks. The forums held at Christ Church and the Presbyterian Church concerning mass shootings, gun safety, and other issues were of great interest to me. Reason being is my ability to empathize with both sides, and hopefully convey the differences to each. In matters of the physical campus my background in Fire Prevention is available for input, discussion, and decision-making.

Stewardship

The Theme "New Rector New Era" for Christ Church Stewardship 2018 proved to be a busy season for us with our New Rector Father Daniel and his wife Ashley. Our Stewardship Dinner was very well attended and enjoyed by approximately 78 parishioners with a delicious meal and fun with the raffle for many beautiful and fun gifts. We are all good Stewards for our church and congregation and our commitment to helping others stays strong and generous. We all care about the Big Picture in our community with all that we give of ourselves with Time, Talent and Treasure. Much Time and Talent is given to the many projects that we all contribute to and the Treasure that we tithe to help the Church continue on. Be well Dear friends in Christ and take good care. Sanford Pyron, Stewardship Committee Chair

“The primary purpose of a church music program is to provide a connection between music and worship. Our program at Christ Church strives to make this connection successful by offering music that enhances our corporate worship; that is, the music helps us express our faith and the music helps us to form our faith.” I’ve slightly re-worded these words which were part of our parish profile, written over two years ago as the parish began the process of searching for a new rector. Kudos to all who were involved in and prayed for the successful search process! It has been a wonderful and blessed first year with our new Rector! As we anticipate the future and prepare for our ongoing worship together at Christ Church, I am keeping in mind the above statement and always asking – how can our music in worship transform us, enhance our experience, and lead us into a deeper relationship with God? This past year has been especially rich in many ways. We began by saying fond farewells to Lesley McCloghrie, interim Rector and Nancy Streufert, associate priest; knowing that their temporary absences were intended to help create a place for us in which to welcome our new Rector, the Rev. Dr. Daniel London. And what a blessing he and Ashley are to our community! As we celebrated with joy their arrival, we also mourned the loss of Fr. Doug Thompson, beloved former Rector at Christ Church. The continuity and cycle of life and death reminds us that we are indeed a resurrection people and our shared faith brings us together in hope and love. For all who have experienced loss this past year, I hope that having the support and love of this beautiful faith community has helped; I know that I have been extremely grateful. I believe in and hope that our music will always be a way to help us connect, as we gather together to celebrate, to mourn, to worship, and to be thankful for that wonderful and never-ending cycle of life. The Choir As the Christ Church Choir has grown in numbers this year, it has also grown in musicianship and professionalism. I cannot believe how fortunate I am to work with such a talented, dedicated, and faithful group of individuals. Thank you to all of you in the congregation who support the choir by offering thanks and praise – they work hard to prepare the weekly anthems and special music offered throughout the year. Partly as a result of the increased size of the choir, but also for other reasons, we have been experimenting with the placement of the choir. Having the choir seated behind the altar and under the organ pipes was never an ideal place for the choir; the acoustics are poorer in that part of the chancel, making it difficult for singers to hear each other, as well as to see the worship service, and to hear the sermon. The bold and brave step of moving the choir from out behind the altar was taken on Pentecost; perfect timing! We can say the Holy Spirit moved us! (with great thanks to Fr. Daniel!) And we have been experimenting, collecting feedback, and thinking about different possibilities ever since. The choir has been patient and helpful – I am grateful for their willingness to be flexible as we try new arrangements! The choir has performed above and beyond the call of duty this year, singing at Fr. Doug’s funeral, the Celebration of New Ministry for Fr. Daniel, a special anniversary concert celebrating the Kegg organ in early June, Lessons and Carol on the first Sunday of Advent, and two Advent Compline services – in addition to weekly services and Easter and Christmas. This represents a lot of time spent learning music, rehearsing, and showing up

to sing. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to each of you! Instrumentalists and Soloists Our worship services are blessed with music by instrumentalists and soloists as well as our choir. Helen Hui, organist, played for the 8:00 am services during the first part of the year. Doug Moorehead, Organist Emeritus, is a willing substitute for Sunday services and accompanies the choir on occasion, for which I am very grateful. Lovely guitar music, both solo and accompanying, has been provided by Paul Gossard – for special and weekly services. Thank you, Paul! It has been delightful to have David Powell join us, as a soloist and cantor. Our Advent and Christmas services were enhanced with his beautiful voice. Facilities and Musical Instruments In 2018 Christ Church celebrated the tenth anniversary of the installation of the Kegg pipe organ. The instrument is tuned at least once a year and only minor upkeep has been needed. This year, our organ tuner did a bit more extensive work. In addition to tuning, he tightened the pedalboard guides and repaired a broken wire to one of the pipe mechanisms. A phone call was made to Charles Kegg, and it was determined that the bushings for the pedalboard guides have worn down and need to be replaced. Since this will most likely involve sending the pedalboard somewhere, we will need to plan and budget for this in the future. The pianos continue to be regularly maintained and tuned. Facilities use charges (piano fees) help to offset some of the cost. Music Events and Outside Musical Groups Christ Church sponsored two major concerts in 2018: the anniversary concert in June for the Kegg organ, featuring many local musicians, including the Christ Church choir, and a September concert featuring the talented and delightful organist Isabelle Demers. In addition, the Fridays at noon music programs during Lent were held, and the summer “Sundays at 4” concerts were offered. A highlight was the August “Sundays at 4” featuring the Scotia Band – it was the first time they performed at Christ Church! Helping guide these concerts at Christ Church is a group of dedicated volunteers: Steve Cole, Nancy Frey, Elizabeth Harper-Lawson, Lyn Klay, and Doug Moorehead. In addition, many volunteers from the parish help usher, set-up, see to the sound system, etc. for our concerts ~ a warm thank you to all! Christ Church continues to be a venue for regular concerts of the Ferndale Community Choir and the Chamber Players of the Redwoods. This past year, “A Company of Voices,” a recently formed acapella vocal group, gave two concerts and they will return in 2019. We also hosted the New World String Project for a concert of Scandinavian and Celtic music in November. Musicians who perform at Christ Church are always grateful for the warm reception they receive and for the beautiful and sacred place in which to perform. Special thanks to Fr. Daniel, for providing a warm welcome to both the musicians and the audience at each concert. Many people come through our doors for concerts during the year and through our ministry of hospitality, each person is made to feel invited and welcome. I never tire of hearing the reaction of someone who has stepped inside our doors for the first time – as they are amazed by the beauty of the space and the warm hospitality. After the concert, many often say how they are looking forward to coming back. And it is always a pleasure to welcome them back, whether for a worship service or another concert. “Walk in the Light”

I mentioned being moved by the Holy Spirit earlier (on Pentecost) … somewhat in gest, but I think for me it aptly describes the wonder of 2018. I discovered a new hymn two years ago and had been trying to track it down. I only had the title “Walk in the Light,” and was not having much success. Lo and behold, in the December 2017 issue of “Sunday by Sunday” was a “Hymn Worship” article on “The Spirit lives to set us free (Walk in the light). The hymn has a wonderful text by Damian Lundy (1944-1996), a catchy and upbeat tune, and easy refrain – I hope we can learn it together one day! Until then, I leave you with the first verse and refrain:

The Spirit lives to set us free, walk, walk in the light; he binds us all in unity, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light, walk in the light of the Lord.

As we “seek to glorify God, follow Jesus Christ, and serve all people through the power of the Holy Spirit” may we indeed “walk in the light of the Lord.”

Acolytes & Eucharistic Ministers

Our Acolytes and Eucharistic Ministers are a wonderful team who have taken care of serving at our Sunday and special services while also taking care of each other throughout the year. Due to their sense of responsibility to both the church and each other, the services have proceeded smoothly with volunteers stepping forward to serve when schedules have taken an unexpected turn. A special thank you goes to those who have served multiple times during the Easter and Christmas services when we have been shorthanded due to travel and family commitments. I’m very proud of our team and hope you are too. Submitted by Deacon Anne Pierson

Lectors and Intercessors

In 2018, Christ Church held 119 worship services on 62 days; we also had special services during the year. Our Lay Ministries of Lectors and Intercessors provided readers for both scripture lessons and the Prayers of the People. Challenges:

Finding last minute replacements for readers whose plans to serve are unexpectedly changed. Making sure our lay ministers who serve in more than one ministry aren’t “double booked.”

Rewards:

Hearing compliments about our readers and intercessors, especially being told their efforts increase the beauty of worship services for the congregation

Altar Guild

The purpose of the Altar Guild is to serve God behind the scenes in His house by preparing the Altar for all ser-vices. The members of the Altar Guild are; Julie Cairns, Irene Hannaford, Elizabeth Harper-Lawson, Sara Hines, Marty & Dan Vega, and Susan Whaley. Thomas Swanger has rejoined the guild after his retirement and return to Humboldt County. The Guild is also supported by many members of the congregation that share their tal-ents. Weekly floral memories and floral arrangers are scheduled by Elizabeth Harper-Lawson through the year and we thank; Thomas Swanger, Lyn Klay, Alice Rosendahl, Elizabeth, and Anne Van Zandt for their wonderful ar-rangements. We also thank Irene Hannaford and the bakers of our Eucharist Bread; Joan Stewart, Susan Whaley, Marita Musante, Lynne Bean and Laura Rose for taking time to bake and deliver the bread to the church for all of our services. And last but not least we thank Dan Phillips, Steve Cole, and John Hammond for all they do to help us on the guild. Respectfully yours, Katherine Clague

Usher/Greeters

The usher-greeters continued to do a great job during 2018. They serve our church very well. Each week they greet people as they arrive, hand out bulletins, take the collection, direct people to communion, and invite new people to the Welcome Table and coffee hour. They also make sure everything runs smoothly during the service. They do an excellent job each week. Our usher-greeters work very well together and are quick to help each other as needed. They also help by volunteering for special services. There were 26 people serving as usher-greeters at the beginning of 2018. We were very happy to have Belinda Zan-der join us. Three usher-greeters left during 2018. We currently have 24 usher-greeters. We would like very much to have more usher-greeters. Please contact Susan Whaley at 707-445-2924, [email protected], or at church if you are interested. There are a number of services during the year which are held at noon or in the evening so we would be very happy to have you join us no matter what time you attend church. Being an usher-greeter is a great way to serve the church! Respectfully submitted, Susan Whaley, coordinator January 13, 2019

Eucharistic Visiting

Currently a team of four is trained and available to take Holy Communion out after Sunday Services to people who are unable to attend our services due to sickness or mobility difficulties. We greatly appreciate the prayers of the congregation at the end of each service that send us out with blessing and a reminder that we are all part of the body of Christ. Our current team includes John Hammond, Elizabeth Harper-Lawson and Julia Lawson. If you feel Eucharistic Visiting is something you might wish to pursue, please see Father Daniel. Whether at home, in the hospital or in an assisted living or care facility, we can bring you, or a loved one, Com-munion, the Sunday worship booklet, and church news if you are unable to attend Sunday services. If you would like Communion, please contact Deacon Anne Pierson, Elizabeth Harper-Lawson or the church office (707- 442-1797).

Prayer Circle

Prayer in the sense of petition, asking for things, is a small part of it; confession and penitence are its threshold, adoration its sanctuary, the presence and vision and enjoyment of God its bread and wine. C. S. Lewis The Prayer Circle is an opportunity to request prayer for yourself or others. It also provides a chance to pray for others. Prayer requests can be sent by email or by phone to Elizabeth Harper-Lawson or the church office. There is also a clip board where one can write requests to be prayed in church. It is located on the shelf at the back of the last pew. To receive emails in order to participate in praying, please contact Elizabeth or the church office. The prayer circle welcomes prayer requests. The only stipulation is permission from the person being prayed for. Please be in contact if you would like to add a prayer to the circle or if you would like to join the group of people praying. [email protected] (707) 442 1797.

Episcopal Church Women

All persons of the Parish are welcome to attend ECW meetings. This year, in particular, we are exploring new ideas to make this open invitation resonate more with our congregation. There are good reasons for all of us to get together to meet once a month for Eucharist, lunch, and a presentation. Our Communion with God, companion-ship with each other, and outreach are all integral components of our church mission. We aim to keep these considerations close to our hearts as we develop new ideas for the coming year. Stay tuned! This past year, the meetings were opened with a Holy Eucharist service led either by Fr. Daniel or Fr. David. Following the service, we gathered for a potluck lunch, a brief business meeting, and often a presentation. Of note were the presentations given by Thomas Swanger on arranging flowers, Pam and Paul Gossard on their trip to south England cathedrals, Sandy Shultz's account of administering to challenged children in Honduras, a look at a trip to Korea by Beth Powell, and the entire group recounting Christmas memories.

Quilters +

Quilters + welcomes all ladies of our parish . Ours is a happy “ever changing tasks organization.” We currently have two major objectives. One: To meet the first Wednesday of each month in Lewis Hall and construct fleece blankets for the children of The Forgotten Initiative Resource Center. This translates to the Foster Care children who live with a family or out of care home. Fleece has become a popular fabric with so many different patterns that we are able to provide individual and ap-propriate motifs for all ages. Oft times this blanket is the only new gift the child has ever received that is his or hers “for keeps.” The steps to produce it are simple and can be learned in one session. We have purchased all the supplies needed. Often we receive gift cards from JOANN’S so purchase a good quantity during their sales. We welcome gift cards if that is the way you wish to participate in this project with us. Our production total for 2018 was 77 blankets. Our second on-going project remains making prayer quilts for our own ill, ailing or surgery recovering Christ Church members. This requires a bit more intensive prep and sewing work. We have basic patterns and easy to follow instructions plus two or three long-time sewers to help all eager new members. Please consider joining our usual group of dedicated ladies for interesting conversation, a snack and making fleec-es for our community’s children. Last meeting attendees included people you all know: Beth, Irene, Belinda, Sara, Jill, Nellie, Rene, Catherine, Peggy and Joan. Contact either of the last two for more details.

Welcome Committee

The responsibilities of the Welcome Committee are to keep the Welcome bags filled with our trifold infor-mation about Christ Church, a chocolate candy bar, the booklet on being an Episcopalian, and a copy of the Chronicle. A letter of welcome should be written to anyone who signs the guest book. Since I am not a computer person, I only wrote to those who gave an address. I hope the person who takes over this job will be able to also communicate with those who used an email address. Julia Lawson has been helping me lately and I hope someone will volunteer to help her. Outreach - We Reach Out as a Church with Helping Hands to Serve Others

We at Christ Church share our time, talent and treasure in so many ways! You will read more about some in

other reports, and you will be aware of others as well. Following is a partial list for 2018:

-Gathering each week of non-perishables for the Food Bank (Food for People), faithfully delivered by Bev

Olson, and each month donations of fresh produce for the St. Vincent de Paul's noon feeding program,

delivered by Renee Ross.

-Collecting hygiene items, warm clothing, towels and more for Betty Chinn, delivered by Beth Powell.

Support for Betty Chinn's outreach programs: assembling Thanksgiving food baskets, serving Thanksgiving

dinner at Town Church, contributing toward a refrigerator for Betty's House, participating in the St. Joseph

Hospital food pick-up project, and more.

-Supporting foster children and teens and TFI (The Forgotten Initiative) families throughout the year in varied

ways: fleece blankets, stocking stuffers, socks, new underwear for back-to-school, Foster Friday night events,

and Music and Arts summer day camp.

-Supporting our Rector's and Deacons' Discretionary Funds to enable them to assist with emergency needs.

-Providing a $500 scholarship through the Helen Person Memorial Scholarship Fund to one of our graduating

seniors.

-Donating funding and supplies to our Deanery summer camp, Camp Living Waters.

-Contributing donations from the Book Project to Episcopal Relief and Development, and $623 to the United

Thank Offering (UTO).

-Sharing our campus facilities with community groups: rehearsal space for the Eureka Symphony Chorus and

a Centering Prayer group in the Chapel. Ten 12-Step Groups meet in the Education Building each week at

noon or in the evening: AlAnon, AlaTeen, AGA, OA and others.

-Supporting those impacted by devastating fires, especially through Anna and Nick Smithler's gift card project

for the Camp Fire victims, which raised over $3000 for gift cards.

-Participating in HIF, Humboldt Interfaith Fellowship, formerly known as Eureka Interfaith Fellowship,

including a community forum on gun violence and the Thanksgiving Community Sing.

-Sponsoring a Bowl for Kids team in support of Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Are you involved with one or more of the outreach activities above? Would you like to be? Do you have ideas

for Outreach? Please talk with a Vestry member, Deacon, or the Rector if you'd like to find out more. Take

part in reaching out and serving others - You will find it a blessing as well!

CHRIST CHURCH BOOK PROJECT

The Book Project has been in existence since February 14, 2015. After living in Southern California for the year

of 2014, I noticed several Episcopal Churches used this idea to raise money for Episcopal Relief and

Development.

How it works? Gently used, current books are donated by church members. The books can be of any subject:

novels, cookbooks, mysteries, religious, biographies, children’s books, fine art, arts and crafts, you name it. CD’s

are also welcome.

Books are located on the three bookcases in the Heritage Room closest to the Parish Hall. They are near the

overstuffed chairs on either side of the room.

Here is the fun part: You take what books you like and leave whatever you wish to donate in the box on the table

by the bookcases. It’s that easy.

Where does the money go? Over the years we have raised hundreds of dollars. Monies collected have gone to Betty Chinn Ministries, the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund for survivors of the Santa Rosa/Napa Fires. and Episcopal Relief and Development for disaster relief around the world. We currently have $50 that will go to help the people of Paradise to recover from their devastating fires.

If you have books you would like to donate please call or text: Stephanie Schultz, 498-1058 or Heidi Erickson, 496-1716. Thank you!
