is a monthly publication of St. Paul Lutheran Church

Christ in Our Midst My wife Katie and I have spent

our fair share of time at Disneyland

over the last year. This means we have

spent more hours than I care to count

waiting. Waiting to get in to the parks.

Waiting to get on to rides. Even waiting

to get out of the park. Most of the time

folks are in pretty good moods and

things run smoothly. Every once in

awhile though something unexpected

happens. A ride breaks down, or some

unknown delay occurs.

Even a small deviation

from the norm and

people quickly become

angry, upset and impa-

tient. This is why Dis-

ney posts wait times.

People remain calmer

even when the wait is

longer just by knowing

the duration that they

will wait.

Unfortunately,

not every place posts

expected wait times

and even if they did

the majority of life is

not like Disneyland.

Our day-to-day lives are far less pre-

dictable than a trip to a local theme

park. Car accidents, illnesses, elections

and even deaths are not predictable.

Life is filled with uncertainties and they

can fill us with anxiety, fear and even

dread. Yet, at church we are about to

enter a time of waiting. Advent marks

the beginning of a new church year and

it is a season of waiting and prepara-

tion.

For the four weeks before

Christmas we will read scripture that

calls us to remember the birth of Christ.

We will hear stories that call us to pre-

pare for the day that Christ comes

again. Yet, we also will be encouraged

to keep watch for the ways in which

God is already here with us. With all of

life’s uncertainties and

the busyness of day-to-

day living we so rarely

stop and look for God.

Where has God been

with you? By all means

this Advent season re-

member the nativity

story, remember that

Christ will come again,

but don’t forget to

pause and look for

Christ in our midst.

The good news

for us is that we are

not in a theme park

line waiting for God.

We don’t have to wait

at all because God comes to us. God

comes to us in the waters of Baptism,

God comes to us in bread and wine, and

God comes to us in worship. Where has

God come to you? Perhaps, in a

stranger you helped you when you

popped a tire. Or maybe in the person

you gave food to on the street corner.

God might have come to you in the

words of a friend who gave you hope.

The question is not ‘if’ God has come to

you. No, the question is ‘where?’

In my favorite Advent hymn we

sing, “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall

come to you, O Israel.” Emmanuel

means God with us. In all the uncertain-

ty we might be facing, in unexpected

occurrences and even in moments of

despair, we can hold on to the certainty

that God is with us. So please join us as

throughout this season of waiting, we

keep watch for God holding on to the

certainty and promise of the redeemer’s

presence.

50/50—As a part of our year

-long celebration, St. Paul

LC is announcing a 50 for

50 campaign. Funds will be

collected over the next 12 months

(through February 2017). We have set a

goal of $50,000 in honor of 50 years of

ministry. Funds will be used for: Up-

grading our AV System in Worship;

Addressing the leaky and hot glass in

PS office; Parking lot coating/striping;

10% of all funds received will support

ELCA Mission Support. Additional

projects as funds are available. 50/50

envelopes are available in the narthex

or just note on your check “50/50” on

PATHWAYS OF HOPE is looking for

a volunteer who would be willing to go

to Second Harvest Foodbank once a

week and pick up groceries to be deliv-

ered to The food distribution center in

Confirmation class for 7th and 8th

graders meets every Wednesday from 5

- 6:30 p.m. We play games, check-in

with one another, learn valuable les-

sons about Scripture, the Catechism

(Lordʹs Prayer, Ten Commandments,

Apostlesʹ Creed), and discuss putting

faith into practice. We also engage in

periodic community

service opportuni-

ties. Please keep all

confirmands in your

prayers.

This is St. Paulʹs ministry for teens and

young adults. Once a month all jr.

highers, high school-

ers, and college/

young adults will

meet downstairs in

the youth room. All

together we eat (free)

pizza and beverages

and check in to see

how your month is

going. We then

watch a 10 minute

thought-provoking

DVD related to faith

topics. Next, we divide into three

groups for discussion. The jr highers

meet in one space, high schoolers in

another, and college/young adult in a

third. The discussion leaders (Pastor

Stephanie, Vicar Jere-

miah, and Ryan

Kuester) lead the three

groups in discussion

for that day. Then we

play a couple crazy

games. Itʹs fun, spirit-

ually enlightening,

biblically enriching,

and nonjudgmen-

tal. Come check this

out. Our next meeting

is December 11 from

WELCA UPDATE

We won again! St.

Paul collected 184

jars of peanut

butter in October.

The Methodists

collected 163 jars,

the Unitarian Uni-

versalist Church of Fullerton collected

172 jars for a total of 519 jars of peanut

butter. November’s challenge results on

the collection of dried beans will be an-

nounced soon and December we are

collecting canned meat. Remember, the

winners are the people from Pathways

of Hope and the La Habra Resource

Care Center who are the recipients of

this food.

We are looking for ladies to fill two

committee positions on the WELCA

Board. Neither of these require a lot of

time but do get you familiar with what

WELCA does for St. Paul. You don’t

have to attend the monthly board meet-

ings but it helps know what is going on.

The positions are:

CHEER – Send cards or notes to all

sick, shut-in, bereaved members of

St. Paul as well as those celebrating

a major event.

POSTERS/ART – Arrange for a

poster/flyer to be made and hung at

the church as a communication tool

at least two or three weeks prior to

any WELCA activity.

WELCA EVENTS We had our Thankoffering service at

all three services on November 6th. We

received over $1,900 in this special

offering for the mission work within the

Women of the ELCA worldwide.

Thanks to all the ladies who served as

greeters, ushers, and readers at these

services.

Community Christmas Card – the holi-days are right around the corner. This is

an opportunity at St. Paul to wish peo-

ple within St. Paul a Merry Christmas

with a suggested donation of $20 with

funds going to Lutheran Disaster Relief,

funds being specified to be used within

the United States. These donations will

be collected until November 30th.

Angel Christmas Tree – WELCA will

once again be collecting gifts for chil-

dren in the area who would not have a

very good Christmas. Watch for the tree

with the tags in the narthex. The gifts

will go to the La Habra Resource Center

for distribution to the local community

and will be delivered on

December 16th .

December 4 – Christ-mas Tea @ 2 p.m. Enter-

tainment by the Grace

Notes. The theme this year will be “The

Twelve Days of Christmas” and table

decorations will be provided by Sarah

Circle members. The various circles will

be providing the food. It is very im-

portant that you sign up (no charge) on

the patio so we can get a count and

have enough food. If you have a group

who you want to sit together, please

indicate this on the sign-up sheet so we

2017 is going to be a busy year for Lutherans. Around the globe, people

will be observing the 500th anniversary

of the Protestant Reformation. Across

the ELCA, women will celebrate the

30th anniversary of Women of the

ELCA. Both the Tenth Triennial Con-

vention (2017) and the 2017 Triennial

Gathering of Women of the ELCA will

take place in Minneapolis next July.

When ordinary women come together

at a triennial gathering, the Spirit trans-

forms them. Consider this your invita-

tion to attend “All Anew,” the 2017 Tri-

ennial Gathering of Women of the

ELCA. Watch for more information.

Let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by

Your Brain on Music! McGill University recently com-

pleted a review of 400 research papers

about the neurochemistry of music.

Yes, there are scientists who dare to

observe our brains while we are under

the influence of music! The results are

adventurous with both mental and

physical health

document neuro-

chemical mecha-

nisms by which

our immune sys-

tem is improved,

stress and anxiety

levels reduced,

and how music

can be more effective than prescription

drugs in accomplishing these feats!

Beyond the specifics of improve-

ment in mood, stress and our immune

system, the best and brightest finding

for me is simple: music aids in the nec-

essary and wonderful aspect of the life-

long joy of social bonding. We bond

through church music, music rehearsals

and all of life’s greatest celebrations!
