EASTER PASTORAL OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY OF THE U.S.A. TO OUR CLERGY, HIEROMONKS AND BROTHERS, RELIGIOUS SISTERS,

SEMINARIANS AND BELOVED FAITHFUL

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! In the beginning was the Word,

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

All things came to be through Him,And without Him

nothing came to be.What came to be

through Him was life, And this life was the light of the human race (Jn. 1:1—3)

It is customary in our Tradition to hear the Prologue to the Gospel of John (Jn. 1:1-13) in various languages at the Resurrection Liturgy. The passage speaks of the preexistent and incarnate Word and Son of God that has revealed the Heavenly Father to us. One may

well wonder about a possible connection between the Prologue, which does not even mention anything of the Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the glorious feast we celebrate today. And the answer is yes. The essence of the feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord lies in the fact that the second person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God, who chose willingly to take on our human nature, to suffer and die on the cross, rose from the dead. “Christ is Risen!”, “Indeed He is Risen!” greetings will be heard everywhere around the world. This is the best and perhaps most ignored message around the world. It was so when it was announced for the first time on Easter morning, and continues to be the case today too. Christ is Risen!

Do you believe, doubt or dismiss it? Jesus’ own Apostles had a difficulty to accept the message, “when they saw Him, they worshipped, but they doubted” (Mt. 28:17). They saw Him, but still questioned the fact. How many times do we wonder and accept Jesus’ real presence in the Eucharist when we receive Him at the Divine Liturgy?

the Cross. Their fear was so powerful that it took them a while to realize the truth of the statement, -- Christ is Risen, and its consequences. The outcome of Christ’s Resurrection is twofold as St. Paul states, “Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life” (Heb. 2:14-15). By His Resurrection, Christ removed any uncertainty and fear about our eternity.

Christ opened the gates of paradise for us anew. “Christ is risen from the dead, conquering death by death and to those in the tombs He granted life.” There cannot be any fear of death since it has no real power. “Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Cor. 15:55-56). Death is defeated and we receive eternal life, which is real. This is to fulfill His promise, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10). On this glorious feast of the Resurrection of

EASTER PASTORAL OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY OF THE U.S.A.

Our Lord, we extend our prayers and wishes that you may not have any fears, worries and doubts in life. May joy and happiness of knowing that we are participants in Christ’s Resurrection be in your hearts, families and communities! Let us celebrate Easter with a renewed and uplifted faith, hope and love of our Lord! May the risen Lord bless you abundantly!

RESURRECTION MATINS Early Easter Sunday morning we announce the joyous news of Christ’s victory over the powers of sin, death and evil. The priest along with the faithful go outdoors weather permitting in procession around the church three times. They sing: “Heaven’s angels, O Christ our Savior, sing a hymn of Your resurrection; let us here on earth praise You with a pure heart.”

Having gone around the church three times, the main celebrant stands before the closed church doors in front of the church building and incenses the doors, singing out:

“Glory to the holy and life-giving Trinity, one in substance and undivided: now and forever and ever.” People respond: Amen. All the priests in attendance joyfully sing the Resurrection tropar: “Christ is risen from the dead, conquering death by death, and to those in the grave, bestowing life. Three times the tropar is sung, clergy and the faithful alternating. Five verses are then sung to which the people respond singing the

tropar of the Resurrection: Christ is risen… The versicles ask: Let Christ’s foes be scattered. Let those who hate Christ flee. As wax melts before fire, let the godless perish before God. Let the just rejoice and leap for joy. After the singing of the “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…” versicle, the main concelebrant (priest) knocks on the closed church door three times with the hand cross and opens them. The clergy and faithful now enter through the doors singing the troparion.

Truly this is the day that the Lord has made. It is by the power of the Almighty God that Christ is risen. As later sung, Ode One tells us: This is the Day of RESURRECTION. Let us beam with festive joy. This indeed is the Lord’s own Pasch. He has led us from death to life, from earth to heaven. Christ is our Pasch (Passover) was sacrificed, freely dying to purify us all. Christ the resplendent Sun shines forth from the tomb. He is the Sun of holiness bringing pledge of eternal life to all His faithful believers.

“Yesterday, my Christ, they buried me with You; Today, I rise with You!”The Resurrection is a festival of joy and gladness. When Christ arose from the dead, He also raised up Adam and Eve. Having risen from the grave, Christ destroyed the power of hell. He rises as a mighty Victor. He brings peace to His Apostles and joy to the myrrh-bearing women.

This is the Festival of festivals. The chosen hallowed day has come. Christ is the radiant presence of God. He is a dazzling Splendor for the whole world. “On this endless day,

when the sun will never set!” Indeed Christ is the Wisdom, the Word, and the Power of God.

This indeed is the joyous Feast of all who love Him. Christ has ransomed us from sorrow. Let love and understanding fill our hearts. The Christian believer is called upon to forgive one another and be one united with Christ our Risen Lord so that the joy of the Lord may last throughout our earthly stay. CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN!

EASTER PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV

Most Reverend Archbishops and Bishops, Very Reverend and Reverend Fathers,Venerable Brothers and Sisters in Monastic and Religious Life, Dearly Beloved Laity in Christ of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church

Christ is Risen!

David, ancestor of the Lord, danced and

made music before the Ark, which was only a symbol. As God’s holy

people let us witness the symbol fulfilled,

And rejoice in spirit, for Christ, being almighty, is risen. From Ode 4,

Paschal Canon

Beloved in Christ!

Today in all of Ukraine and in our settlements abroad Christians are filled with an inexpressible joy. From the moment we first hear our traditional Easter greeting “Christ is risen!” in each one of us, from the youngest to the oldest, our soul undergoes a profound change. We feel how all life’s problems and challenges disappear, how all cares and sorrows are washed away “as wax melts before the fire.” This joy is the fruit of the Holy

Spirit and a true sign, that the risen Lord is present in our hearts.

David, ancestor of the Lord, danced and made music before the Ark, which was only a symbol.

In the sixth chapter of the second book of Samuel, we read how King David at the beginning of his reign arranged for the transfer of the Ark of the Covenant to his capital, Jerusalem. In this relic were contained the tablets of Divine Law, received by Moses: they were the most precious possession of Israel. The Ark was a guaranty of invincibility for the people of the Old Testament, of strength for the king. For this reason, David greets it with great joy, with

dance. This presence of God in the midst of His people and their sense of duty to live according to the Lord’s commandments will later allow the Psalmist to say: “Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to His holy name!” (Ps. 97:11-12).

Our Paschal Matins see in the behavior of the king an image of our paschal joy today. And while the Ark-symbol was lost in the time of the Babylonian onslaught in the VI century B.C., the risen Lord is eternally present in our midst: “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). This is no symbol or

prediction of some unsure or unreachable future. Christ Himself, who rose from the dead, comes to us, His disciples, as a source of our strength and victory over evil. In the Resurrection, in the news of His victory over death is found the summit of our joy and the fulfillment of all prophecies and human aspirations.

To rejoice in God is to allow the victory of the risen Lord to penetrate my heart, to be fulfilled in my personal life. This is not merely some temporary feeling, but real participation and communion in Christ’s Resurrection. Saint Paul wrote: “For if we have been united with Him in

a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His” (Rom 6:5). To celebrate Pascha is to rise together with Christ, to triumph in Him and with Him. Thus, our joy in Him and with Him is no passing emotion, but the permanent state of one who lives in the faith of the risen Lord.

As God’s holy people let us witness the symbol fulfilled…

In today’s world people do not know how to rejoice—they find happiness in possessions, but largely cry over that which they would like to have but do not possess. Today there in an entire amusement industry that “sells joy,” suggests that you “buy happiness” in the form of empty and short-term distractions, compulsions, or narcotics, promises quick satisfaction without responsibility, seeks to entice through an escape into virtual realities or the acquisition of temporal riches.

A person seeks happiness but cannot find it in those things. For joy is not possible without God. Happiness without God is an illusion

EASTER PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV

which quickly dissipates. It is a dependency that simultaneously enslaves and saps one of strength.

How often in today’s society we find irresponsible politicians, newfound messiahs, in the role of “purveyors of joy.” With empty slogans they appeal to the lowest of human desires. At the price of the blood and tears of innocent victims, or even entire nations, they promise happiness “for the chosen” who belong to their “world” which they artificially designed, and count on the fact that in the face of their lawlessness, “in all tongues”—here we paraphrase our great Kobzar- Shevchenko, all will be silent. But such joy is built on the sand of idols, falsehood, and violence, and thus, sooner or later, it will collapse under its own weight.

We, on the other hand, are called to build our happiness and our joy as a community of children of God. It isn’t easy to live in the joy of the Lord, especially in today’s circumstances. We often ask ourselves: How can be rejoice today? Why are we suffering? Why is this happening to us?

Is there any sense to our struggles, the blood and suffering, the deaths and devastation? Without the mystery of Christ’s Pascha, these questions remain unanswered. For the risen Christ Himself opens up for us the meaning of human suffering—transforming it in our paschal journey into joy in the Lord. St. Maximus the Confessor wrote: “If God suffers in the flesh when He is made man, should we not rejoice when we suffer, for we have God to share our sufferings? This shared suffering confers the kingdom on us. For he spoke truly who said, 'If we suffer with Him, then we shall also be glorified with Him' (Rom. 8:17).” The suffering and risen Lord is present in each person who undergoes suffering till the end of the world—in each human hurt, in each spilt tear and drop of blood—and He draws us into His Resurrection, grant us joy therein. The one who suffers in the name of love of God and neighbor, that person knows how to be glad in God, how to rejoice with the authentic and eternal joy of the Risen One.

And rejoice in spirit, for Christ, being

almighty, is risen.

Therefore, let us view our personal, family, community, and national sufferings in light of our paschal journey led by the risen Christ, in light of our transformation into joy, our movement towards hope on this lightsome day, made by the Almighty. The Lord’s Pascha opens up for our people the truth that through our struggle we enter into His joy. Our love for the Fatherland, which calls us to self-sacrifice in the name of its freedom and independence is, indeed, a path to Resurrection. Our invincible spirit bears witness before the world that one need not be fearful before deadly falsehood and violence, for “Christ is risen, being almighty!”

Today the Lord Himself gladdens us, changing our sorrow into joy, as it was for the myrrh-bearing women. They went to the Lord’s tomb crying and returned filled with authentic joy in God. They went in the darkness of hopelessness and received the light of the Risen One and

proclaimed to the Apostles and the entire world that Christ was truly risen. May we be transformed by this “miracle above all miracles,” and through us—our society and land, wherever we may live.

PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV TO YOUTH ON PALM SUNDAY

Here I am, for you called me. 1 Sam 3:5

Beloved in Christ Youth in Ukraine and abroad!

Palm Sunday, the day of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, is traditionally in our Church an occasion to reach out to you with a special greeting and prayer. I value this occasion most highly, for I recognize that speaking to all of our youth—to all social groups, countries and cultures, uniting myself to you and constituting one great church family, is my privilege and responsibility.Throughout this year, our

Church in Ukraine and throughout the world is seeking to listen to our youth most attentively, in order to have an opportunity to speak to the whole Catholic Church in their name. In fact, in October, representatives of the Universal Church from many countries and continents will gather in Rome for a Papal Synod dedicated to the theme: “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.” In the context of this general focus on young people in the world today, I call on you—carefree schoolchildren and overworked students;

to you—happy and often tired parents of schoolchildren and students; to you—caring grandmothers

and grandfathers; to you, who have come to church today; and to

all of you who you are open to hear me out.

Explaining why the Church is focusing on young people and what this Synod means, Pope Francis said: “The aim [of the Church] is to accompany the young on their existential journey to maturity so that, through a process of discernment, they discover their plan for life and realize it with joy, opening up to the encounter with God and with human beings, and actively participating in the edification of the Church and of society."Encounter is at the heart of Christ’s life and teaching on earth. Carefully reading the New Testament, we see a whole “rosary” of encounters, a network of people and relations, a constant search of people for God and God’s movement towards man.

The evangelists describe the earthly journey of Jesus Christ as a tireless movement towards Jerusalem, completed this very day, this festive day. The teaching of Christ, His works and gestures often are rejected by His contemporaries.

Healing on the Sabbath? Speaking to publicans? Sharing a meal with sinners? Calling himself Son of God and remitting sins? All this seemed to represent a greater and greater challenge.

The majestic entry into Jerusalem became a challenge for all: for society, which grew accustomed to its role as a lawless, voiceless colony under the rule of the Roman emperor; for the religious establishment of Scribes and Pharisees, who claimed for themselves the right to speak on God’s behalf, even as they drifted hopelessly far away from His Spirit; for the authorities, who accepted their marionette-like status and fell into corruption; for the people, who got used to living in fear. They were lost in the face of this crisis, in the face of this “challenge,” whose name was Christ, and for whom the youth today sing “Hosanna” and proclaimed the King of Israel. Therefore, there was no solution other than that of turning away from Him, destroying Him, eliminating the threat to the status

PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV TO YOUTH ON PALM SUNDAY

quo. They would not be deterred even by the fact that Christ was the One of whom the Law and prophets spoke.

During the entry of Jesus into the city, it was the youth that accept the chal lenge—recognize Christ as God, as the Messiah, who brings freedom, opens the door to a living encounter with the Lord God. This challenge becomes for the youth a vocation—to new relations with God—a vocation to Love, to an authentic and full Life.

Beloved young Ukrainians, are you ready today in your circumstances to respond to the challenge of a new life, a new future? Search for your creative response to what kind of a Christian you want to be in today’s world. Through His entry into Jerusalem, Christ does not merely throw out a challenge—He calls upon each of us to follow Him. As it was two thousand years ago, the youth of today are called to respond to this appeal, and not merely to observe.

Allow me in the name of the Church to throw out to you a challenge—to be with God more frequently, to dedicate to Him more time and attention, to pray privately for longer periods, to delve more deeply into the Sacred Scriptures. Reflecting on the teachings of Christ, you will also hear much about action: He Himself was constantly on the move—between towns and people, and He calls on His followers, especially us, to an active faith and love of God and neighbor.

To be a Christian is action. It signifies following Christ, responding to His fundamental calling, share in His life, death, and resurrection. For the path of our Savior is the life story of every person of faith. “Take up your cross and follow me,” —Christ calls out to His disciples of all time. The world today frequently sees in these words only humility and suffering to be rejected, whereas it is unable to recognize power and victory in this appeal. Human nature

has within it an aspiration for victory—to win, be it is children’s play or in serious projects at an adult age. The Cross of our Lord is a symbol of the most majestic, most important victory in the history of mankind—the victory over sin and death. Jesus Christ calls on us to share the joy of such a victory.

Every person should ask themselves a basic question: how do I know to what it is that God is calling me? What am I to do in life to be happy? How do I apply the talents, abilities, and interests given to me? How do I put together the mosaic of feelings and sensibilities which the Lord has given me? What should I be? A doctor? A musician? A businessman? What should I do? Do missionary work at the ends of the earth? Defend my country armed with weapons? Be a volunteer in the East? How can I change my country? How do I make the world a better place? How do I live an authentic life? These and other questions too numerous to count should be answered by the youth of today in

Ukraine and the world over, a world ever-changing, more fleeting, with countless global possibilities, dangers, and problems. The world demands expecting answers, while God calls—He is the challenge that grants us our personal life vocation.Christ calls but each person should discern this call, understand their role, fulfill their specific life purpose. Christ invites but a person’s response is always personal.

Your vocation is also your response, Beloved Youth, to God’s call. Failing to find this response is to waste a life, to live not your life, to plan a life but never taste its fulfillment. Christ appeals to each one of us with these words: “I came that [you] may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10). This, the primary calling, which the Lord God directs to us, is the vocation to a fullness of life, while its realization is an individual’s response. The task of the entire community of the C h u r c h — p a r e n t s , teachings, mentors and educators—is to help a young person find his or her own response to God’s calling, to

discover in oneself their God-given talents, to discern one’s vocation, written in the soul.

Discerning a vocation requires its discovery, interpretation, and choice. Without choice, that is, action, even the greatest vocation, the boldest dream, the brightest life is not possible. And choice requires courage—to respond to a call, to not fear deep waters, unpassable mountains or unknown paths, that is, difficulties, m i s u nde r s t a nd i n g s , and obstacles. This particularly applies to a unique vocation, which the world today drowns out, to the priestly or monastic state, as well as to the vocation to be a good father or mother.Beloved girls and boys, have courage to respond to the challenge—to fulfill your God-given vocation! Dare to respond to the calling of Christ! Be yourselves! When you

will understand, open up and develop your vocation, do not be afraid to stand on this path. Take responsibility upon yourselves! It is not by chance that the word “response” has the same root as “responsibility”: one cannot be quietly and inactively responsible. Trust in God, who first has trusted in you, has first loved you.

Today Christ solemnly enters into Jerusalem to fulfill His vocation to die for us so that we might have eternal life. In searching for your response, your vocation, allow Him to be close to you!

The blessing of the Lord be upon you!

MEDITATION FOR PALM SUNDAY, 2018Metropolitan Stefan Soroka

Have you ever felt alone even when surrounded by people? You feel that no one really knows you for the person you really are. Jesus knows how you feel. The Palm Sunday Gospel story tells of one such occasion in the life of Jesus. Jesus knew the crowds singing ‘hosanna’ was hollow. They had hoped that Jesus would deliver them from political domination by Rome. Jesus had not come to give them political freedom. He had come to give them something more. He had come to Jerusalem during the Passover to be their sacrificial lamb. He had come to give them eternal life with God. Even the disciples did not comprehend the significance of that ride into Jerusalem. No one seemed to be aware that Jesus had come to Jerusalem to die. He would not set up an earthly kingdom, but he would establish a spiritual kingdom by sacrificing himself. How lonely Jesus must have felt. Jesus carried the weight of loneliness. Jesus survived Palm Sunday because he had hope and faith in his heavenly Father. Next time you feel alone or think that no one really understands your secret thoughts, take heart. Someone does know how you feel. He is waiting for you in the calm lonely eye of the stormy crowd. He went through his Palm Sunday experience alone, so that you will not have to go through yours the same way. Even when those around you will not, or cannot understand you, God does! Reach out to Jesus Christ this Holy Week in special prayer, meditation and through Holy Confession. You will come to know Him more personally in His resurrection on Easter Sunday! A Blessed Holy Week!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF GREAT FAST 2018Metropolitan Stefan Soroka

St. Mark tells us of the disciples walking on the road to Jerusalem with Jesus walking in the lead. He tells us that “their mood was one of wonderment, while that of those who followed was fear” (Mk 10:32). Then we hear of two disciples vying to sit, one at the right and other on the left, when Jesus comes into His glory. This caused some anger among the other disciples. Jesus calms them by instructing them, “You know how among the Gentiles those who seem to exercise authority lord it over them; their great ones make their importance felt. It cannot be like that with you. Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all” (Mk 10:44). Fear, mutual distrust, envy, and pride rob you and me of the special

gift of walking with Jesus with wonderment. We can be blinded to the needs and sufferings of others around us. We can forget the importance of being of service to others. Great Fast invites you and me to walk alongside Jesus Christ with wonderment as to where He will lead us. We are reminded, “… the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve…” (Mk 10:45). Saint Teresa of Calcutta saw the face of Jesus in every person she ministered to, especially the sick and the dying. Through her inspiration, may we also cherish and search for opportunities to see Jesus Christ in the faces of those we serve!

UGCC BISHOP FROM KHARKIV LEADS LENTEN MISSION RETREAT IN MARYLAND

This year’s Lenten Mission Retreat at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, was led by a very special guest--the Most Reverend Vasylij Tuchapets, OSBM, who is the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Bishop of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. The three-day Lenten Mission Retreat, March 9-11, consisted of Divine Liturgies, Homilies, Reflections, Holy Confession, Spiritual Conversations and Blessings. Following Sunday’s Divine Liturgy, parishioners gathered in the church hall for a luncheon at the conclusion of which Bishop Vasilii had a slide presentation about the ongoing construction of the Saint Mykolai Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Cathedral in Kharkiv, as well as about other UGCC parishes in the Kharkiv Eparchy, which also includes the Poltava and Sumy provinces. Many in the audience remarked that the bishop’s stories about the growth of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in the Kharkiv region were truly awe-inspiring. Bishop Vasylii traveled to the Washington, DC area at the invitation of Rev. Alexander Dumenko, the pastor of Holy Trinity.

SELF-SACRIFICIAL LOVE

When speaking about ”self-sacrificial love”, let us not consider it as an isolated act or acts, but a lifestyle attitude, a decision and way of life. That is, something at the very core of one’s being – a spirit manifesting itself concretely in action.

In a word, God is LOVE. God so loved the world that He sent His only-begotten Son into the world to save us from sin. Jesus Christ loved us so much that He willingly suffered and died on the cross for all of us. He became one like us in all things, except for sin. Christ Himself tells us that “No greater love can a man have than to lay down his life for His friends.”

Thus, the cross of Christ is the culmination of God’s saving acts for His people. When Adam and Eve of their own free will decided to not listen to God and had fallen into sin, God did not abandon His own creation forever. One day God would send a Messiah, a Redeemer and Deliverer from sin and all its evil effects. One of the icons for the Great Fast, especially Passion or Holy Week, is known as “Extreme

or Profound Humility.” We learn what what true humility is when we look at Christ’s passion, suffering and death. The icon depicts the crucified Christ in the tomb. He bears the marks of crucifixion, an act of hatred, envy and violence. From the aspect of sinful mankind, what they had done was the greatest injustice in the world of all time. From the aspect of the Son of God, the cross was the greatest act of self-giving, self-sacrificial Love.

From the Vesper service of Great and Good Friday, we read in a stichera before the hymn “Radiant (Joyful) Light”: O wicked and lawless people! Why have you plotted in vain? Why have you condemned to death the Life of all? O great wonder, for the MAKER (Creator) of the world is given over to the hands of lawless men, and the Lover of mankind is lifted up on the tree (cross).” And why does the Lord willing suffer for us sinners? So that He might free those bound in Hades (the waiting place for the just of the Old Testament).” Let us join in acclaiming: “O long-suffering Lord, glory be to You!”

The Christian accepts and lives the gospel message of Jesus Christ, which is one of LOVE and TRUTH. He or she walks in the footsteps of Christ and carries one’s own cross with love and patience. The Christian is self-giving, self-sacrificing. He or she is never self-seeking. The authentic Christian is sensitive to the needs of others and willing to help ease the burden of another.

The love of an authentic Christian, faithful disciple of Christ, is likened to that of Our Lord. St. Paul in his Epistle to the Corinthians (chapter 13) describes to us what Christian love truly is:

“Love is patient. Love is kind. It is not jealous. It is not pompous. It is not inflated. It is not rude.

It does not seek its own interests. It is not quick-tempered. It does not brood over injury. It does not rejoice over wrong-doing, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails... In the end, faith, hope and love (charity) remain and of these three, LOVE (charity) is the greatest.”

Christ’s Resurrection is a promise, a pledge of our own resurrection. Let us be faithful to Christ and His gospel message of Love and truth so that we be deemed worthy one day of entering His eternal Kingdom of Heaven.

Rev. D. George Worschak

Rev. Wasyl Kharuk, “Missionariesof Mercy”

Representative of the Ukrainian

Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia

“Be merciful, as your Father is merciful” (Lk. 6, 36)

March 25, 2018

Dear Friends,

We have almost reached the end of our great journey over the sometimes-turbulent ocean of the Great Fast and the Week of the Passion for 2018.

Along this pilgrimage, we have arrived at a brief rest stop of great happiness as we celebrate the joyful feast of the Annunciation and the bittersweet feast of the Triumphal Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem which we often times call Flowery Sunday or Palm Sunday.

The feast of the Annunciation is joyful because it celebrates the Good News proclaimed by the Archangel Gabriel to the Theotokos that Almighty God would become one of us within her immaculate womb.

The feast of Palm Sunday is bittersweet because our Lord has worked His greatest miracle by calling forth His

friend Lazarus from the tomb after having been dead for four days and restoring him to life. The calling forth of Lazarus from the tomb prompts the people, especially the children, to greet and welcome Him as a hero. They cheered Him on with shouts of Hosanna and waved branches in the air hailing the King of Israel. Yet, in a few days, many who cheered and waved the branches, His closest friends, even His chief Apostle Peter, would abandon Jesus as He begins to suffer His passion and death on the cross.

Keeping these two great feasts in mind, we will continue on our journey. As we do so, what will be our attitude as we enter into this time of the Great and Holy Week?

Will we too, be full of grace, and have the courage to accept our vocation as Christians and God’s plan for us, whatever it might be, as did the Mother of God?

Will we be fair-weather friends like those on that first Palm Sunday who join the crowd for the celebration, but disappear at the slightest sign of trouble

or challenge?

Instead, may we all listen to the words of the Archangel to the Mother of God and FEAR NOT!

We need not be afraid to walk with our Lord as He goes toward His passion and death. Some of us, during the journey that is life, will also endure days or weeks of suffering, but we are never alone. Jesus is with us even when we might feel utterly abandoned by friends, and even family. Walk with Jesus on His journey to Golgotha, and He will always walk with you throughout the journey of your life, in happiness or sadness.

The Passion Week gives all of us, in our Church, (which is the vessel upon which we cross the ocean of the Great Fast, Passion Week, and even Life) many opportunities to accompany our Lord. Avail yourself of the opportunities: to worship and pray; to receive Holy Confession; to be anointed and healed on Holy Wednesday; to be nourished by the Holy Eucharist on Holy Thursday; to spend a Holy Hour at our Lord’s Tomb on Good Friday; to watch the

darkness of the tomb change to the Light of Pascha at the Liturgy of Holy Saturday; and ultimately to sing, dance, and celebrate the Feast of Feasts and Festival of Festivals on the Glorious Day of Jesus’ Resurrection.

My dear friends, let us keep holy, this holy week, by being generous with our time, talent, and treasure. Be kind, understanding, hopeful, forgiving, and most importantly merciful! Amen.

THE CHURCH BUILT UPON STONE AND FAITHBy: Amy L Thomas

The Sunbury American News, March 15, 2018

For years Centralia, Pennsylvania, has held the world in fascination. From the wide media coverage resulting from the mine fire beginning in May of 1962, the efforts to contain or stop the fire from spreading, and then the resulting evacuation of the numerous families who called Centralia home.

To this day, people from all over the globe come to see the once thriving, close knit mining community that has become the ghost town that inspired Roger Avary’s movie “Silent Hill”.

But even though the community and almost all the residents are gone….faith has remained.

Situated above the town on a steep hill sits a small, white church crowned with three blue domes that are adorned with golden Ukrainian crosses. The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church was built in 1911 and to this day it’s a place of worship for

many former residents.

On Sunday, the 11th of March, the church was visited by three film makers from the UK. Multi award winning Producer/Director Wayne Derrick was accompanied by Anna Bates and Jassim Allawati (BriteSpark Films). The crew is filming a documentary on engineering and wanted to speak with residents about Centralia and its history.

After the liturgy, the team sat with John Mayernick Sr. who was born and raised in Centralia. “This was our church” said Mayernick, “Everybody in my family, they were baptized here, went to communion here. Even some are buried here.”

Reverend Archpriest Michael Hutsko, who has led the congregation since 2010, spoke with the crew at length about the role of the church in the community. In his interview Father Hutsko said “the parish of the Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary was established over 100 years ago by immigrants from Eastern Europe, who felt they needed a place to share their faith, to socialize with people who spoke the

same language as they came here to work in the coal mines of Eastern Pennsylvania.”

Father Hutsko further explained “the history of this parish, as it relates to the tragic mine fire. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania determined the boundaries and the health hazard imposed to the citizens and they would have to be evacuated to various areas surrounding Centralia, and that the

parish was also slated for closure due to the impact of the town being relocated. Our bishop at the time, Archbishop Stephen Sulyk, did not want to see the parish close so he requested that the state do bore hole drilling to determine if the church was threatened by the mine fire. Having done the borings, the state determined that the entire property was built upon solid rock and that

the people coming here to pray would not be in any danger, and would be safe from any fire or carbon monoxide.”

While some people may take the scripture figuratively, to Father Hutsko and the parishioners the passage of Matthew 18:13 “And I

say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” is indeed, quite literal.

Tom Dempsey Sr, a former resident and post master of Centralia met with the film makers

THE CHURCH BUILT UPON STONE AND FAITH

earlier in the week and took them on a walking tour, explaining where various landmarks and homes were located. He discussed in length about the history of Centralia and what it means to the community. Tom is a local historian with deep roots in the community, for him and countless

others; Centralia holds memories of family gatherings, spending time with friends and childhood memories. For those who once called his town their own, it will always be a bastion of heritage, family and faith.

PLEASE HELP US IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY TO OUR CHANCERY

You will recall that our Chancery moved into the former Cathedral school building, allowing for leasing out our former building to earn revenue for the archeparchy. The original plan envisioned an addition to accommodate an elevator. The cost was prohibitive – well in excess of $ 400,000 or more. We proceeded to adapt the school building and to transfer the Chancery without providing for an elevator. So as to provide for those who need assistance to visit our offices, we are installing two chair lifts at a total cost of $ 25,000. One will provide for access to the main floor at the front entrance from the parking lot. The second will provide access to the top floor offices via the wide stairway on the 8th Street side of the building. This will assist in providing for persons who need assistance ascending between the floors. It is important that everyone feels welcome and able to visit our Chancery offices. We humbly ask your help in meeting this cost. Your contribution will assist in meeting the cost while at the same time, indicate your support for ensuring that physically challenged people are welcomed equally in the Chancery. God bless you for your concern, and for your anticipated understanding and generous assistance. Your donation can be sent to the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, 810 N Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123. Thank-you!

Blessed Paul VI prophesied to theworld that marriages and the society would suffer if the useof contraception became widespread. He said thatinfidelity, moral decline, loss of respect for women andabuse of power by governments would increaseexponentially.

Today, the vast majority of women in the western worlduse some form of contraception. In developing countries, the West engages in oppressive financial and politicalpressure to comply with abortion on demand, contraception, sterilization and more.

This conference will highlight the fulfillment of theseprophecies in the world today and offer a reflection as tohow selflessness, love, self – mastery and moral responsibilitycan reverse this trend.

Ten Commandements

When: June 25-29, 2018 (8:30 AM – 3:30 PM) Where:

Basilian Spirituality Center, 710 Fox Chase Road, Fox Chase Manor, PA 19046

The camp seeks to pass on both aspects of Ukrainian spirituality and cultural tradition. The theme is based on the Ten Commandments. The dos and don’ts of God’s 10 Commandments show us how to apply love in every aspect of life. Jesus Christ summarized all of God’s laws in two great commandments. “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40). The day includes catechesis, songs, crafts, DRAMA CLUB, embroidery and fun. Space is limited to 25 children. Reserve your place today! Participation at the camp by Registration ONLY! Reflecting on passions of Christ via reading the Holy Gospel and relating it to the painful problems of modern society, the participants of the Stations of the Cross walked through the streets of Lviv up to the St George Cathedral. There, near the Monument to Metropolitan Andrei, Bishop Volodymyr appealed to people with a word of gratitude and Metropolitan Ihor gave all the blessings.

The Stations of the Cross with its motto “Lord, the Great and Almighty, protect our beloved Ukraine” was compiled by the students of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Prayer meditations were based on quotes of His Beatitude Lubomyr.

The process was accompanied with singing of the seminarians from Holy Spirit Seminary.

The Head of the UGCC met with the ecumenical group "Reconciliation in Europe - the mission of Churches in

Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Germany"

Friday, 09 March 2018

The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church His Beatitude Sviatoslav met with the international ecumenical group "Reconciliation in Europe - the mission of Churches in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Germany."

The meeting of the "Reconciliation in Europe - the mission of Churches in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Germany" is held annually. This year it took place in Kyiv on March 6-8.

The main topic of this year's meeting is to summarize the work of the Group in 2017 and discuss possible ways and plans for cooperation between Churches in 2018-2019.

The Head of the UGCC was presented with the latest developments of the group and asked for prayer and support for future ecumenical undertakings.

Congratulating the guests, the UGCC Primate recalled his first acquaintance with the Group, which took

place 15 years ago and which he still holds in his heart to this day as a good and bright event. The Head of the Church stressed that the UGCC is and will always be open to the dialogue of building peace.

The participants also presented to His Beatitude Sviatoslav the idea of the Future International Ecumenical Conference on October 17-19, 2018 - "A Strategy for Reconciliation: The Role of Churches in Ukraine," which will be held in Kyiv with the participation of bishops and clergy from different confessions of Germany, Poland, Belarus and Ukraine.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the German Evangelical Church, the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ukraine and

Poland, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (MP), the Belarusian Exarchate of the Moscow Patriarchate, the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and the Roman Catholic Church.

The UGCC at the meeting of the group is represented by Fr. Ihor Shaban, the Chairman of the Commission of the UGCC for Promoting Christian Unity

Reference:The idea of the "Reconciliation" group originated in 1974 on the initiative of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Polish Ecumenical Council in order to work out a reconciliation project between neighboring Poland and Germany, whose relations were

burdened with memories of the Second World War. In 1995, the initiative was expanded thanks to the new participants: Ukraine and Belarus. Thus, the project "Reconciliation in Europe - the Tasks of Churches in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Germany" was launched, which was presented at the Second European Ecumenical Assembly in Graz (Austria) in 1997.

In Kyiv, His Beatitude Sviatoslav met with the leaders of the organizations of Caritas network of Ukraine

Friday, 09 March 2018 March 7, 2018 in Kyiv, a meeting of His Beatitude Sviatoslav with the leaders of the organizations of Caritas network of Ukraine took place.

During the meeting, the leaders of the organizations told the Head of the UGCC about the social problems that Caritas employees encounter in their work, and actions aimed at resolving them. The current suffering caused by the war in Ukraine should also be mentioned. According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, these difficult trials showed the unprecedented sacrifice and self-devotion of our people in Ukraine and in the settlements. Still, thousands of dead, tens of thousands of seriously injured, millions of

refugees and displaced persons will remain a call for mercy, solidarity and love for a long time. We do not have the right to get used to their sufferings, to become insensitive to their cries, to pass indifferently by their afflictions. On the contrary, the expression of our living faith should cause even greater solidarity with the victims of the war, and this solidarity should take a practical dimension, depending on the needs of a particular family or person and in accordance with the opportunities of the church community.

Among many social challenges and problems, His Beatitude Sviatoslav particularly emphasized the unprecedented spread of surrogate motherhood in Ukraine, which was caused by socio-economic

factors and the lack of legal constraints. The Head of the Church drew attention to the unprecedented size of the migration processes and the related problem of trafficking in human beings. Also, a number of environmental issues were discussed, in particular challenges related to access to clean water, especially in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

The Head of the Church stressed that, in accordance with the Social Development Strategy approved by the Synod, each parish would have to form a charitable group or parish body of Caritas, which would set the goal of involving the faithful in the testimony of merciful Divine love, either in relation to the members of the parish community itself , or "in the world". With the support of eparchial Caritas, such a group should be responsible for preparing the entire parish community for the duty to turn faith into specific charity works. It should also educate individuals and groups who will be competently working in the Church in

the field of charity. The parish has many specific forms for such a service: visiting the sick, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, protecting orphans, supporting those who suffer injustice, peacekeeping activities, comforting the frustrated, protecting unborn children, etc. It should be remembered that first and foremost we bear responsibility to those in need who live among us. And so, if possible, the parish should support charitable activities of the Church at the regional, national and international levels.

At the end of the meeting, His Beatitude Sviatoslav thanked all Caritas employees for the daily serving of the needy, which is an expression of faith and testimony of us as a living Christian community. Reported by Fr. Andriy Nahirnyak

His Beatitude Sviatoslav in Warsaw: “Young generation has to initiate a social dialogue, necessary for setting reforms in Ukraine”

Saturday, 17 March 2018

Corruption is a big problem for a modern Ukraine today, what was one of the most important tools for supporting Moscow under control of post-soviet countries. The following thought was expressed by Head and Father of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church His Beatitude Sviatoslav in his report “The role of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukrainian

society transformation” during the conference in Warsaw called “Revolution, war and its consequences” on March 16, 2018.

“Attempts to reduce corruption on a governmental level are taken, however there is a necessity to reduce it on a personal level as well. Loyalty, shown regarding some corruption manifestations within personal relationships, is a consequence

of an attitude what appears due to a defensive mechanism against a totalitarian state, considered to be foreign and unfriendly. It requires work with changing awareness, so every citizen be sure that Ukraine is not a foreign country for them, but a country which defends them, guarantee them future, security and prosperity”, said Head of Church.

Talking about a successful

transformation of Ukraine into a democratic state, Head of UGCC stressed out that we need to crave for solidarity and subsidiarity, so state may not control everything.

“The development of private enterprises, - a spiritual leader of Greek Catholics assumes, - and a middle class, what allows people to establish means for

maintaining a decent life. This is something they have crave for. One of the tools needed for reaching goals are education and science. It is impossible to form a new generation without universities. A generation that will be able to take responsibility for a country. That is why cardinal Lubomyr Husar founded Lviv Catholic University, the first catholic university on the territory of former Soviet Union”.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav in Warsaw: “Young generation has to initiate a social dialogue, necessary for setting reforms in Ukraine”

“Until young generation master an ability to hold a newspaper in one hand and Scriptures in the other hand, they won’t be able to initiate a social dialogue, required for making reforms. We need young entrepreneurs who will realize their potential and become leaders of economics raise of Ukraine, guided by social doctrine of Church”, outlined His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

According to his words, Ukraine enters a phase of development and acquires the greatest experience of pain and hope, what it can share with its neighbors, both on East and West. “We are witnessing a birth of something new in Ukraine, what is optimistic, as this something we call a new life, far more better than it used to be before”.

It takes more than one ‘Our Father’ to ask for God’s help, pope says

Carol Glatz Mar 15, 2018

ROME - Praying for God’s intercession takes courage, dogged persistence and patience, said Pope Francis.“If I want the Lord to listen to what I am asking him, I have to go, and go and go - knock on the door and knock on God’s heart,” the pope said in his homily March 15 at morning Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

“We cannot promise someone we will pray for him or her and then say an ‘Our Father’ and a ‘Hail Mary’ and then

leave it at that. No. If you say you’ll pray for another, you have to take this path. And you need patience,” he said.

Francis’s homily focused on the day’s reading from the Book of Exodus (32:7-14), in which God tells Moses how angry he is that his people have created a golden calf to worship as their god. God threatens to unleash his wrath on them and promises Moses, “Then I will make of you a great nation.”

The pope said Moses does not take the bait or get involved in “games of bribery.” Moses sticks

by his people and does not “sell his conscience” for his own gain, the pope said.

“And God likes this. When God sees a soul, a person who prays and prays and prays for something, he is moved.”

Moses had the courage to speak “face-to-face” and truthfully to the Lord, he said, and successfully implored God to relent and not punish his people.

“For prayers of intercession, you need two things: Courage, that is, ‘parrhesia,’ and patience,” he said.

People’s hearts must be truly invested in the thing or person they are praying for; otherwise not even courage and patience will be enough to keep going, he added.

People should ask God for the grace to pray frankly and freely to God, as sons and daughters would talk to their father, knowing that “my father will listen to me,” Francis said.

The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery. The 14-foot long linen cloth that has been in Turin Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5’10” bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible.
