Christian burial and

cremation

Part 4 of 4

The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community.

It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect,

which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away.

Also, it prevents any unfitting or superstitious practices.

For the reasons given above, the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence is not permitted. Only in grave and exceptional cases dependent on cultural conditions of a lo-calized nature, may the Ordinary, in agreement with the Episcopal Conference or the Synod of Bishops of the Oriental Churches, concede permission for the conservation of the ashes of the departed in a domestic residence.

Nonetheless, the ashes may not be divided among various family members and due respect must be maintained regarding the circumstances of such a conservation.

In order that every appearance of pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided,

it is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea

or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos,

pieces of jewelry or other objects.

These courses of action cannot be legitimized by an appeal to the sanitary, social, or economic motives that may have occasioned the choice of cremation.

When the deceased notoriously has requested cremation and the scattering of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of the law. The Sovereign Pontiff Francis, in the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 18 March 2016, approved the present Instruction, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congregation on 2 March 2016, and ordered its publication. Rome, from the Offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 15 August 2016, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Gerhard Card. Müller, Prefect Luis F. Ladaria, S.I., Titular Archbishop of Thibica, Secretary

What Is Confirmation? Part 3

Traditionally, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude (courage), knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts are supernatural graces given to the soul. The 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit are charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, and chastity — human qualities that can be activated by the Holy Spirit.

FAITH FORMATION

Would you like to help lead our youth closer to Christ? Join the

Youth Ministry Hospitality Team on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays

of the month during our Life Teen and Edge nights. Team mem-

bers assist with greeting our youth, serving them dinner and

helping with the "before & after" prep. The time commitment

is 6:00-7:30PM. Interested? Contact [email protected] or

[email protected].

Being confirmed in the Church means accepting responsibility for your faith and destiny. Adulthood, even young adulthood, means that you must do what’s right on your own, not for the recognition or reward but merely because it’s the right thing to do.

Remember!

How Does God Make The Sun And Moon Go Up And Down? God made powerful laws to govern the universe. These laws control the movements of the sun, moon, earth, and other planets and stars. For example, one law called "gravity" draws objects toward each other. Other natural laws control the weather. Many forces determine whether the day will be sunny or cloudy, warm or cold, such as the heat from the sun, the currents in the ocean, the wind, and many others. God set up the rules that make all these forces work together. And because God controls the entire universe, he can interrupt the laws if he wants to - bring rain to dry land or bright sunshine to flooded areas. How power-ful God must be to control all that!

Key Verse: The heavens are telling the glory of God. They are a great display of what God can do. (Psalm 19:1)

Related Verse Joshua 10:13; 1 Kings 18:1ff.; 2 Kings 20:8-11; 2 Chronicles 7:12ff.; Psalm 19:1-6; 104:19; 148:3; Hebrews 1:2-3

Note to Parents Part of this is a science issue. If your children are wondering how the forces of nature work, don't be afraid of encouraging them to learn more about the natural sciences. The power and wonder of nature can be used to inspire awe and worship of God. The heavens declare his glory! (See Psalm 19)

Presentation of the Lord—Feb. 2nd

Forty days after Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph brought him to the great

Temple in Jerusalem. There they presented Baby Jesus to the Heavenly

Father. That was the Jewish law. The Holy Family obeyed it with loving hearts.

KIOSK CORNER

Have you taken a few minutes to look over the Catholic media displayed on the kiosk in the narthex? We have a wide variety of titles available in print, DVD and CD format. This month, in anticipation of St. Valentine's Day, the spotlight is on a CD called, “For Love and Marriage”. This CD contains inspiration and help for those of us who travel our spiritual jour-ney in the married state. Johnnette Benkovic shares her conversion back to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church and the struggles that came when her husband didn't share her faith. She explains how the Lord blessed her in unexpected ways and, through the promptings of his Holy Spirit, showed her how she could better love her spouse through it all. Parishioner Comments... Just what I needed to hear! It's what I have been looking for to help me in my marriage and spiritual journey. Janie - Kyle, TX This is the best CD I've ever heard on marriage. Johnnette's honesty and vibrant faith touch us to the core. It is such an inspiration for married couples to grow stronger in the Lord. Fabienne - Wilbraham, MA
