Will You Be Glad? “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the lord.’” Psalm 121

Just think! How excited you are going to be, on that day, when your favorite restaurant opens up and you can go sit down for a delicious meal?

How about when the ball field opens up again and we will be pumped to sit in the stands or our living room and cheer on our team? What about when the hair salon or barber shop opens and we can go treat ourselves to a haircut? Imagine how happy it will make us to be able to visit and hug that family member we have had to only visit through FaceTime or Zoom. It will be a great day when we are able to experience many of these things. Things that we realize now, we have for so long taken for granted.

But how about church? Will that be one of the places you rush to as soon as we are able? Has it been a place that you have longed to be? I am not talking about the building. I am talking about being with the people of God, to worship Him together, to fellowship with those that hold in common a love and passion for God and His Word.

I have heard many people say how they have missed church so much and how the churches will be full when all of this is over. I hope they are right.

Before, the pandemic the average church member darkened the door of the church 2 to 3 times a month. That doesn’t sound like a longing for corporate worship and a hunger for the Word. Maybe through this pandemic, in the midst of what God is trying to do in you, He wants to show you what is truly important in life—including gathering with the body of Christ to worship.

Notice a few things about the Psalmist who was excited about going to worship:

Worship brought Joy— Think about that. Does it bring you joy to genuinely give yourself to God in worship? Is it one of the top joys of your life? Do you long to hear that song that allows you to connect with the Spirit of God? Does it bother you not to have fellowship with other believers? Do you have a hunger to hear the Word of God speak to you? If you answered “no” to any of those questions, there may be a deeper issue in your heart. As believers, we find joy and fulfillment in being and doing what He created us and saved us to do—worship Him.

Love for worship should be contagious —The Psalmist was thrilled even when others invited him to come to the temple and worship. “They” were so excited about worship that they invited the Psalmist to come and that joy spread. I see so many folks sharing their church’s online times of worship, which is amazing. These services are allowing many people to hear the Word that might not have before. Can we spread that same excitement and invitation to others when in-person church services resume? When you are excited about church, so much so, that you invite others, that joy is contagious, to your children, neighbors and beyond.

There is something special about corporate worship— The “house of the Lord” meant the temple for the Psalmist. This temple was symbolic of the presence of God Himself, where they went to meet with Him and to worship. This side of the cross we have the Spirit of God living within us as believers. We can worship anywhere. Our worship of God is special anytime and anyplace. However, there is still something special that takes place when God’s people, two or more, are gathered together for the sole purpose of worship. I do believe as we gather to worship in living rooms, in front of screens, we are gathering as the body. I also believe there will be something most holy and special when we can gather together again, in person, to worship our God.

FROM THE LIBRARY “We admit that we are often unable to reconcile God’s sovereignty

and goodness in the face of widespread tragedy or personal adversity, but we believe that, although we often do not understand God’s ways,

He is sovereignly at work in all of our circumstances… All people—believers in God as well as unbelievers-experience anxiety,

frustration, heartache and disappointment. Some suffer intense physical pain and catastrophic tragedies.

But what should distinguish the suffering of believers from unbelievers is the confidence that our suffering is under the control of an all-powerful and all-loving God; our suffering has meaning and

purpose in God’s eternal plan, and He brings or allows into our lives only what is for His glory and our good.”

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out!

Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.

To Him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36

Missionary Update from Ashlee Hoskins

Dear CSBC family,

Thank you for praying for me and for all the students (college & high school) in Latin America and the Caribbean. I am safe and sound in Costa Rica - working from home, and taking all the necessary precautions. This past month has been an upheaval of everything we

know as universities, schools, churches closed; the mission trip to the Middle East and another one to Spain to work with refugees were postponed as well. We are sad, but trusting the Lord and what he is doing. It has been encouraging to talk to students and how God is using this time to draw them to him and they are spending more time than ever in studying the Word and in prayer. Another

encouragement is how students and staff are continuing to reach out using digital tools to share the hope we have in Jesus. One per-son after participating in the training we had on a digital tool shared it with a friend who accepted Christ after hearing the gospel.

Please continue to pray for me - that I would continue to trust the Lord and that He would be my refuge. Please pray as we care and encourage our students and staff and for God to provide for them; many of them are beginning to experience the economic effects of

COVID-19. Please also pray as we are planning to reach Uruguay and the islands of Martinique & Guadelupe (French-speaking Caribbe-an islands) with the good news of Jesus via digital tools.

Thank you for your partnership in the mission.

A note from Music Director, Britton Altman

Several years ago, I drove by a church that had a clever message posted on the sign out front. It read: What’s missing from our

CH CH? UR

Right now, it may feel like we’re all missing from church. But that’s not really the case. We know that the church is not just a building. It’s not just a physical assembly. The church is the Body of Christ. And although we are apart physically, we are still the church. Although we are separated, we are not alone. As children of God, we know that our Heavenly Father will not abandon us, nor He will abandon His church. Lovingly, He carries us through every trial and difficulty that we’ll ever face. During this time of separation, some may be feeling discouraged or even isolated and lonely. Let’s remember to reach out to one another. Make a phone call, send a card, text message or email. Let’s encourage each other with the great truth that God will never leave us nor forsake us (Deut. 31:6). The hymn “No, Never Alone” by Ludie Pickett comes to mind. The second verse says:

The world’s fierce winds are blowing, temptations are sharp and keen. I feel a peace in knowing My Savior stands between. He stands to shield me from danger when earthly friends are gone. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

We’re going to be OK? Pastor Tim Burriss

Over the airways we are seeing images of actors, musicians, politicians, athletes and more telling us things like, “We’re going to be ok,” or “We’ll get through this,” or some other encouraging phrase. One common thread in all of this is the belief that we will return to “normal”. But God wants more than “normal for his people.” He wants to grow us to be more like him. As I have stated before, I am not exactly certain what God is doing in this situation. But it is important for us to use these times to grow in our faith, to learn how to focus on the things God focuses on. He tells us that we are his workmanship, created for good works in Christ. This experience should make us more eager to see how we can show the love of God to a lost world. It can teach us to be better family members, better neighbors and to see the things that are most valued in God’s eyes. Instead of just getting through to the time when we can be “normal” again, ask God to grow you through this and truly become “His workmanship” created for good works in Christ. God saved us by his grace and created us for good works.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV)
