5TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIMEWEEKDAY READINGS & MEMORIALS
5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR ACOMMENTARY ON READINGS
First Reading: Job is lonely and deeply depressed. He questions the very purpose of life which seems to be nothing but fruitless toil, without joy, goodness or hope. (Job 7:1-4, 6-7)
RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Ps 147) “ Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.”
Praise the LORD, for he is good;sing praise to our God, for he is gracious;it is fitting to praise him.The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem;the dispersed of Israel he gathers. Res
He heals the brokenheartedand binds up their wounds. He tells the number of the stars;he calls each by name. Res
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;to his wisdom there is no limit. The LORD sustains the lowly;the wicked he casts to the ground. Res
Second Reading: There were in Corinth many boastful teachers who taught strange religions and philosophies for fees. Paul, on the other hand, proclaims the Gospel of Christ as a duty, freely and without charge. (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23)
Gospel: The Gospel answers Job's questions concerning the mystery of human suffering. Only the good news of Jesus Christ offers hope, gives meaning to our suffering and transforms our lives. (Mark 1:29-39)

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION PROGRAMME
1ST – 8TH FEBRUARY 2018Letter Writing ContestWhile we focus on new communication technologies, we want to bring back a flavor of the old – Hand-Written Letters. Parishioners are invited to write letters to any member of your families (it can be to your spouse, to your parents, to your child, etc) that captures the essence of all that we celebrate and espouse on the feast of St. Valentine. While we carry love for our families in our hearts and express same through our deeds and words, we would like to encourage the use of hand-written missives as another way of expressing our love and care for each other. The contest is open from 1st February 2018 and closes on 8th February 2018. All entries should be dropped at the parish office. Three winning letters will be selected by a panel of judges.
