1 CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JUNE 2016 PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS GIVING THANKS TO GOD IN FAITH AND LOVE Today, as always, is a time to prayerfully give thanks to God: for the gift of our lives and relationships; for the gift of creation and the abundance of God’s provisions; for the gift of faith and the church; and for the good news of Jesus and the grace he brings. We bear the image of God in our very being; we live amidst the overflowing generosity of God’s Spirit; we walk in the presence of the risen Jesus; and we are led eternally into God’s promise and hope. In short, we live because of God; therefore, living is an expression of thanksgiving as our lives bear witness to God in all things and all times. Giving thanks to God constantly and continuously acknowledges that we do not and cannot control or dictate definitively our destiny. Our lives and our future are faithfully embraced by God’s love; we are and will be because God is. Interestingly, God’s will allows us to live in the freedom of His love. The choices we make shape the manner in which we live within God’s loving care; good choices on our part gain for us no increased favor from God, and bad choices do not egregiously and eternally stand between us and God. Unfortunately, many of the choices we have made and sadly continue to make within the freedom of God’s love misrepresent our true relationship to and with God because of the sinful influence of idolatry. Living with this freedom granted by God, we have fallen short of God’s glory in two idolatrous ways: first, humanity, through the ages, has demonstrated a capacity to favor gods (idols) that will support a desire for possessions, control and comfort apart from the guidance of God’s Spirit, and second, has fatefully come to believe that human thoughts and actions in and of themselves can definitively and ultimately influence the manner in which God will eternally relate to us. Even in this time of Christ, the twin idolatries of self- glorification and self-righteousness seem alive and well. And because of these

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

GIVING THANKS TO GOD IN FAITH AND LOVE

Today, as always, is a time to prayerfully give thanks to God: for the gift of our lives and relationships; for the gift of creation and the abundance of God’s provisions; for the gift of faith and the church; and for the good news of Jesus and the grace he brings. Even in this time of Christ, the twin idolatries of self-glorification and self-righteousness seem alive and well. And because of these

erroneous ways of understanding our relationship to and with God in Christ, our understanding of thanksgiving has been skewed. Too shallowly and all too often, thanksgiving is a response offered only when things are perceived to be going “well.” As St. Paul counsels, thanksgiving to God is to happen in all things, at all times, and in all places because everything exists and happens in the presence of Jesus, the risen Lord of all. Therefore, thanksgiving is a complete and total orientation before God even in the face of the disappointing and dismaying effects of idolatrous ideas and behaviors. Thanksgiving before God acknowledges the gifts that we are and have, and reflects the grace we have received and continue to receive in Christ which confirms for us that God will not give up on us. In Christ, we know that God’s love and care for us is eternal regardless of our shortcomings. We thank God in plenty and in want, in “good” and in “bad” times, for there is no time or existence outside of God’s love for the world in Christ. Through grace, we come to know that God’s love for us is eternal. Through the Spirit of love, God seeks to guide and direct our ways into the way of peace. From these, we are moved to give thanks. And where and when our thoughts and actions run contrary to God’s will, the presence of Christ draws us to the way of truth and life. God loves us eternally; but God does not always like what we are about or up to. But thanks be to God that we are not left to our own desires and wants, or remain lost to our straying ways forever. Because God loves us and wills to guide our lives into faithfulness through Christ, our thanksgiving to God inherently moves us to call upon God to show us opportunities for service. Having received the gift of life and the gift of faith, we inquire of God of the ways we may live these gifts as Christians and as the church. How shall we live our thanksgiving in our homes, in our workplaces, in our communities, in our churches and on the “road?” To whom does God want us to share a word of hope? To whom shall we give a helping hand? Whom will we welcome into our care? As we ourselves are received by grace into God’s eternal love, may we serve with mercy those to whom God brings before us. A kind word here, a gentle assist there; a word of encouragement now, a supportive hand then: thanksgiving in action. As we open ourselves to give thanks to God, God opens ways for us to serve and share. --Pastor John

Spring-excitement has entered my body, my mind, the yard! Love vibes everywhere, bees buzz in every color of blossom. Winter stillness ceased, idle grass is greening, trees are leafing. The hummingbirds and geckos are back, renewed life abounds. Warmth magics the earth, little sweet-song birds chirp and fly in a playground of budding branches with a deep blue sky elixir... Earlier dawns light us awake with artful serenades of pink clouds; Gorgeous late-afternoon sunshine is Octoberesque and calming but with air golden'd by warming fervor, not Fall's cooling swelter. Evening breezes' perfume is heaven, passion, newborn blooms. We've been waiting all winter for open windows—yay & yippee!

WEST END FAIR

The West End Fair is only a few weeks away. So, we are going to have a meeting on Monday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m. for all those interested in helping in any way with our food stand at the fair. Much help will be needed as well as your ideas and comments to make this great fundraiser a success. For more information about the meeting or our fair stand, talk to Kim Blyler.

Sewing Days

Christ’s United’s morning Sewing Circle meets monthly to lovingly craft quilts, that are then donated through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to Lutheran World Relief for disbursement to refugees and people in need around the world.

You are invited to join our awesome quilting ladies and help them create more of their beautiful and practical quilts. No experience? No experience is necessary to help and projects are available to be taken home and sewn. And the fellowship is great, too! Come and join us!

Our next workday is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21, 8:30-10:30. Anyone is welcome to join us.

If you would like more information, talk to Judy Mecouch or Georgetta Bowes.

NOTE! The ladies can always use material to use for the quilts. If you have material left over from sewing projects, old curtains, sheets, etc. bring it in for the ladies to use. And don’t throw out that old mattress pad. Bring it to the church and we can use it for filler for the quilts. It will help to keep someone warm when it is distributed by LWR. Every piece helps.

It sounds so much better to say, “Come to church,” than “Go to church.”

HAVE A FAVORITE HYMN?

Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy all of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the “Public Domain”. It’s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and we will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions. Give any requests to Gary Hackenberg, Margie or Pastor John. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hymn Request ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOCIAL/FELLOWSHIP REQUEST

prayer calls the church office and requests to be put on the Prayer Chain. Each member of the Prayer Chain then receives either a phone call or an email notifying them of a prayer request. The prayer chain member receiving the phone call then calls one other person and so on down the list. Those notified by email do not have to pass it on. Would you be willing to pray for someone in need? It is reassuring to know that you are supported by the prayers of others and not alone with your concern. If you would like to be a member of the Prayer Chain, fill out the following and put it in the offering plate or on Margie’s desk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIFE LESSONS

Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your mouth is moving.

There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11.

One day, two guys, Joe and Bob, were out fishing. A funeral service passes over the bridge they're fishing by, and Bob takes off his hat and puts it over his heart. He does this until the funeral service passes by. Joe then said "Gee Bob, I didn't know you had it in you!" Bob then replies "It's the least I could do. After all I was married to her for 30 years."

NOTES OF APPRECIATION

“Volunteers are gold”. Volunteers are the most valuable commodities in ministry. Without them, nothing would get done in our churches. We are fortunate to have the kind of dedicated people that we do. Do you know anyone who should be given a pat on the back and a “Thank You” for the contributions they make in and around the church? Let Margie know.

THANK YOU TO… …Everybody who helped in any way with the Chicken Barbecue. …All who helped in anyway with the blood drive …The Volunteers who donated their time and energy to help with the spring cleaning of the church grounds, removing the storm windows and planting the geraniums

Dave and Linda Swartz offer thanks to Pastor John and other member of our 4 Bells family who have provided prayers, cards, well wishes, phone calls and visits throughout Dave’s heart surgery and recovery. So far, his recovery is on track and we’re both looking forward to having him back in good health.

I AM YOUR FLAG

Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am your Flag -- the Flag of the United States of America. Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you, because you see, it is about you and me. I remember some time ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and, naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving in the breeze. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it against his left shoulder so that his hand was directly over his heart -- remember? What happened? I'm still the same old Flag. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a boy and a lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago. But now I don't feel as proud as I used to. When I come down your street and you just stand there with your hands in your pockets, I may get a small glance and then you look away. Then I see children running around and shouting -- they don't seem to know who I am. I saw a man take his hat off, then look around. He didn't see anybody else with theirs off, so he quickly put it back on. And what about that night at the ball game, when they played the "Star Spangled Banner" and I waved so proudly in the breeze, but nobody bothered to sing? Oh, they stood up, all right, as sort of a mild patriotic gesture, but then they talked among themselves about the game and weather, but they did not sing. I felt hurt. Is it a sin to be patriotic? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I have been? Anzio, Guadacanal, Korea, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf. Take a look at the memorial honor rolls sometime -- names of those who never came back -- who gave their lives to keep this republic free. One nation, under God. When you salute me, you are saluting them. I may not be coming down your street for a long time, as it seems that patriotic parades are a thing of the past. But when I do, will you do me a big favor? Stand up straight, place your right hand over your heart, and if they play the "Star Spangled Banner," sing out loud and clear. I will salute you by waving back. Show me you remember.

The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests.

It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard. ~Joel Salatin,
