NEWS FROM COLOMBIA: ELCA Missionaries Curtis & Katie Kline continue work in the areas of Human Rights and Education with the Lutheran Church of Colombia(IELCO). Katie just completed her first semester as a distance learner for a Master’s degree in Leadership & Innovation for Ministry from Luther Seminary. She is translating and working on new material for the Lutheran Schools of IELCO. Curtis recently was a presenter at the U. of Dayton using his experience with Human Rights in Colombia. They will be visiting in the SEMN Synod during the summer of 2018.

CLC’s Weekly Discipleship Plan

The beginning of a new church year marks a great opportunity to start new habits. One habit to

consider is a weekly discipleship plan. This plan helps you take personal responsibility for

growing in faith and BEING the church each and every day. Discipleship simply means learning

to follow Jesus and live like He did. This plan is designed to give you intentional ways to live

out your faith, emphasizing different ways to live like Jesus each day. The key idea to grasp is

that faith is not just one component of life, reserved for one hour a week. Instead, faith involves

everything we do, every second of our lives. You'll notice that all of these activities/ideas can be

done on your own or in partnership with others. I pray this weekly plan can help you find

specific ways to BE the church as you love God, love people, and follow Jesus. In Christ, Pastor

Make a Difference Monday- Value: Blessed to be a Blessing (Genesis 12:1-3). God has blessed

us so that we can bless others. Look for simple ways to bless people and make a difference in

their lives today. (a smile, a phone call, a prayer, a nice tip, paying someone's bill)

Tuesdays with Jesus- Value: Dependence (Galatians 2:20) We seek to become increasingly

dependent upon Jesus so that it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us. Set aside time

today to be with Jesus in prayer, meditation and Bible Study.

Workout Wednesday- Value: Whole Body Health- (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) We value personal

responsibility for staying fit physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Visit a gym, fitness class or find your own ways to work on strengthening your body, mind and

spirit. Take a walk. Read a devotional book. Do a crossword puzzle or Sudoku.

Theology Thursday- Value: Wisdom- (Proverbs 24:3-4) We believe in curiosity, honesty,

asking questions and using the mind God gave us to grow in wisdom and understanding. Listen

to online sermons and messages, visit Iamsecond.com or get together with friends/ family and

ask questions about God, faith and life, seeking wisdom and understanding.

Fun Friday- Value: Relationships, Fun- (John 10:10) God created us for relationship. God also

invented fun. Put the two together and you're in for a great night! So go out and enjoy life. Use

Fridays to have fun and build relationships with family, friends and people not connected to a

church. Remember, faith is caught, not taught; it develops through relationships, so take time to

invest in other people & show them Christians can have fun!

Service Saturday- Value: Service- (Romans 12:1) We seek to worship God with our whole

lives, especially by using the gifts he has given us to serve others. Worship God today through

service to others. Rake leaves, shovel a driveway, volunteer at a nursing home or food shelf,

bake cookies to give away, or find your own way to serve others in love.

Sabbath Sunday- Value: Rest, Strengthening Families- (Exodus 20:8-12) God commands us to

honor the Sabbath day and to honor our family members. We desperately need a break,

but rarely take one. We desperately need family time, but rarely get it. Therefore... Commit to

doing as little work as possible and use this day to rest, relax, worship God, renew your soul,

and spend quality time together with family/friends. You won’t regret it!

Thank you to Carol Solberg, Lavern Paulson, Jon Haugen and Jim Marzolf for serving on the Council in 2017.

The officers for 2018 were elected as follows”

Deb Ebner made the motion to elect Diane Carr as President. Jim Marzolf seconded

Jon Haugen made the motion to elect Dawn Hellickson as Vice President. Deb Ebner seconded.

Jon Haugen made the motion to elect Joel Mielke as Treasurer. Kim Ristau seconded.

Team Leaders are to write an addendum for our bylaws/Constitution and have team descriptions in place for 2018. Present these at our retreat on February 3rd.

Property Report:

1. Dan Grabau was very appreciative to everyone who helped with clean up after the Lutefisk Dinner.

Worship Report: No Meeting

We are looking for congregation members to join the worship team

Youth Report:

Kim Ristau discussed upcoming events they have planned. There is a weekend retreat January 26-27th. “Quake Event” held in Des Moines, Iowa. Cost is $ 250.00 per person. Each

person would be responsible for a deposit of $ 50.00; the Luther League fund will pay the balance. Interested chaperones going, Paul Hemenway, Dustin Arndt, Eric Corson. They are

looking for a female chaperone also.

2. Ski trip is planned for February

3. Souper Night planned in March

Evangelism/Stewardship:

The Directory is complete. Thank you to Carol Solberg and Sara Niemeyer for all of their work on the Church Directory.

Education:

Kristen Bunge will meet with Pastor Dan and Diane Carr to review the goals and responsibilities of the education team.

Pastors Report:

1. Thank you to everyone who worked at the church dinner and who donated items.

2. Conducted 1 wedding on November 12- Luann and Lowell Bailey.

3. Conducted a Baptism November 12- Miles Kaiser

4. Conducted a Funeral December 1- Joy Atkins

5. Conducted 2 funeral services at the Veterans Cemetery

6. Held worship and communion at Harmony Health Care and Traditions.

7. Participated in the Community Thanksgiving Service.

8. Christmas Services:

Christmas Eve: 9:00 am and 4:40 pm

Christmas Day-No Service

Pastor Dan would like to look into switching the internet provider from Mediacom. They have been having a lot of problems with service. Have Amanda contact Harmony Cable

Company for options.

Above reports were approve by consensus.

We have been contacted to advertise our Christmas services in the post bulletin. The consensus was not to advertise because of cost

We were contacted by Root Prairie Church regarding a Food Pantry box made available to anyone who needed extra food after the local food shelf was closed. The consensus was to

not participate at this time.

New member classes will be January 28, February 4, and February 11. We will host a new member dinner February 17th. We will also have sponsors for the new members.

Our church council retreat will be held Saturday, February 3 from 8:30-11:30. Diane Carr will host this event.

Rebecca Schwingle has resigned as Service Group Organizer. If there is any congregation member who is interested, contact a council member.

February: Movie-Cocoa-Snacks

The Youth Group is planning on hosting a Valentine’s Dinner. More information to come.

January Congregational Event

The January Christ Lutheran Congregational Event will be held on Sunday, January 21st at 3:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for a fun afternoon of cards, board games, and snacks. Everyone is Welcome!

CHRIST’S CRAFTERS Christ’s Crafters will resume meeting again with January designated as service project month! This group will be meeting Thursday, January 4th at 1 p.m. and Saturday, January 20th at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. During these two meetings, the group will be making stuffed animals for the kids at Mayo, who has generously provided the patterns and fabrics. You do not need to know how to sew to do this project!
