James 1:5-6 “If you need wisdom, ask our

generous God, and He will give it to you. He

will not rebuke you for asking. But when you

ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God

alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided

loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea

that is blown and tossed by the wind.”

So often we are faced with battles of the

mind, personal battles, other people’s battles,

spiritual battles, to name a few. For ex: Mind

– Am I good enough? What’s wrong with me?

Why can’t I...?, Personal – Loss of job, home,

loved one..., Other’s – dragged into the middle

of a feud, guilt by association..., Spiritual –

Question of faith, Are His promises meant for

me? Did He really lead me in this direction or

did I imagine it?

Our minds are so powerful. They can lead

us to be happy or sad, good or evil. With so

many choices, how do we know what’s right

or wrong anymore? All I know, when there

was prayer in high school, kids were fighting

with fists... now it’s guns. Could there be any

relation to prayer being removed from our

schools? Who knows? I believe so.

We can’t stop the world from the direction

it’s heading in, but we can make a difference,

each and every one of us. Become a disciple

for Christ. Talk to non-Christians and introduce

them to Jesus, their Saviour. The devil will

never tire of attacking you and your mind,

but as long as you have trust and faith in your

Creator, you CAN prevail.

DEAR DAILY BREAD FRIENDS,

Daily Bread Ministries is off to a great 2010! We experienced one of our largest quarters for receiving and giving food away during our last quarter of 2009! Over the last four years we have averaged giving away more than four million pounds of food to our neighbors in San Antonio and the surrounding area each year! 2009 was a very challenging year for many people, with the down-turn in the economy, the up-turn in unemployment, and the upside-down turn in our government! People who still have jobs are being paid less, and many are having their hours cut, while the government is trying to tax more of each dollar we do have! We are facing very challenging times these days, and it is in times like these when we need to look to our heavenly Father and cry out to Him in humility, reverence, and repentance. He is not willing that any should perish, but desires that everyone would come to a saving knowledge through His Son. The need for assistance in our communities has never been greater, and we all know that behind the physical need, there is often a spiritual need that is causing or magnifying the problems or issues. Daily Bread Ministries and its partners take the food, clothing and furniture to those in need with the compassion and love of Jesus Christ. We are intentional about establishing relationships with those in need, finding out how we can best pray with them, and sharing with them the reason why we do what we do – JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S ONLY SON! He is our reason for the love, joy, peace, and hope we have in these challenging times, and He is the assurance of our salvation and eternal relationship with God. Please commit afresh and anew to pray for and financially give to our ministry – Jesus said, “When you have done it to the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” The opportunities to share his love and grace through acts of kindness and compassion have never been greater, but it does take finances to keep the lights on, keep fuel in the trucks, and pay the rent. Will you consider being a faithful prayer and giving partner with Daily Bread Ministries this year? We are believing in God for the super-natural, divine favor of our heavenly Father to be upon DBM in 2010 – will you believe with us? Thank you for your prayers and support.May God richly bless and keep you, and make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you and give you peace. In Jesus name,

Chuck FarmerExecutive DirectorDaily Bread Ministries

AdelynnAdelynnHow long have you been playing together? Elliott and I first met in January of 2008, in Colorado, on a ski trip. After discovering our shared passion for worship, we began writing music and playing in College Station. I am a student at Texas A&M, so that is where I live. A few months later, in August of 2008, we decided to start a band. It took us a while, but we finally agreed on our band name—Adelynn.

How did you come up with the name Adelynn and what does it mean? Well, there is not a simple explanation for this question, but I will try to give you the short version. The worship leader at my home church, in San Antonio, has played a huge role in our musical and spiritual journey. He taught me more about a true heart for worship than I could have ever imagined. His pure love for worship and his encouragement are what first spurred me on to follow my passion. After Elliott and I became friends, he became Elliott’s mentor. Over the past few years, they developed a deep spiritual relationship. It was around the same time that we decided to start a band, that he and his wife had a little baby girl. We decided to name our band after his little girl in honor of him and all that the Lord had taught us through him.

How and when did you get your start? For both Elliott and I, we discovered our love for music at a young age. My dad is an incredible pianist with a determined spirit. When I was about six-years-old, he started asking me to come and sing by the piano, while he played songs from old musicals. My singing began a bit squeaky and out of tune, but it was these moments, with my dad, that allowed me to discover my love for music. Elliott was more independent in his musical pursuit. None of his family members or even friends was interested in music, so he had to be self-driven; he taught himself most of what he knows on the guitar. We both continued our small musical careers throughout middle school and high school. I joined a few choirs and both Elliott and I played on our youth group praise teams.

Who are your musical influences? We love both Christian music as well as secular music. I could name 100 artists we absolutely love, but here are just a few that most definitely make the final cut. Some

of our favorite secular artists are Coldpay, Michael Buble, Patty Griffin, Counting Crows, Nickel Creek, and of course, I have to give her credit, Celine Dion—she is just under my favorite artist list…not Elliott’s. On the Christian side, we both listen to Watermark, Switchfoot, Kari Jobe, Chris Tomlin, Hillsong United, Needtobreathe and so many other great artists.

Have you always played Christian music, if so, how did you know Christian music was right for you? I have pretty much stayed in the Christian genre, but Elliott has ventured out into the secular market. He played in a rock band in high school; he saw this avenue as his ministry. When we started Adelynn, we immediately began to seek a vision for this band. We knew that worship was our forte and for some reason felt as though this was where the Lord was leading us. However, this could always change. Our goal, as a band, is to always stand at the mercy of God, and through prayer, hard work, and seeking after the Lord, we will be guided in the direction the Lord wants us to go.

What is the most rewarding thing about performing? Watching people worship.

Do you write your own songs/music and where do you get the inspiration to write them? We have written several of our own songs, but we frequently play covers. I would say that our inspiration comes mainly from life experiences, what God has taught us, and what he is still teaching us.

How do you balance college with career and family? This has actually been one of the hardest things about being in this band. All members of the band have lived in different cities ever since we started playing together—we all attended different colleges. It has been close to impossible to try and figure times and places for us to practice. One or more of us always had to drive a long way for practice. But, with diligence and a great deal of

8

Page 9: Christeenianity June 2010

planning we have been able to figure it out. Starting this summer, we are all going to be in San Antonio, which is such an incredible blessing. It most definitely has been difficult balancing school with music, as well. We have all tried to devote a great deal of time to both school and music; we had to learn the art of time management. We have found is that we must determine our priorities first and then decide what we must sacrifice. At times we would sacrifice a free weekend of hanging out with friends or being with our family in order to play a show, and other times we would pass on a show in order to spend time with friends or family. We have had to learn to determine what is necessary at that time. We have also had to understand that ministry is hard, and sacrificing is absolutely necessary when pursuing any ministry, or really any goal in life.

What were your struggles as a teenager and how did you get through them? Maggie: From about 8th grade through most of my high school career, I fell into a deep, dark place of overwhelming insecurity. Fear of failure haunted my thoughts, and it prevented me from living the life I know God had in mind for me. Although I feel as though I have conquered a great deal of these struggles, as I have grown older, I am still in the process of working out all of the kinks. I have to fight the devil every day, as he tells me that I am not good enough, that I am not going to have the words to say, that I am not going to pass my test, that I am not a good friend, and so much more. The only way that I am able to conquer these thoughts is to rest in the Lord and remember the beauty He sees in me. Talk to God, and know that He is the only one that truly satisfies!

Elliott: I went to a private Christian school, so my struggles were probably a little different in high school. My struggles came in a religious stagnant relationship with Jesus and a heap of pride. When you go to a private school you tend to focus on rules and the legality of Christianity. As I have grown I have realized how important it is to have balance in your faith. I would swing from wanting rules to saying, “I can interpret the Bible however I want.” It is so important to seek to know doctrine and theology, but also understand that we are not to use the Bible to compromise decisions of right and wrong.

I know that life can throw a lot of punches and at times it might be hard to keep your faith, how do you stay focused and not let life bring you down? We must understand that we, as believers, are supposed to be punched and persecuted. I know that this is so hard to understand, but we have to stop and try to sincerely understand that when we are being persecuted, we are doing something right. Then, if we stay focused and do not waver from what God is asking us to do, persecution turns into a blessing. “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10) Never fold; stand up for what you believe and stand firm by your Savior. Pray daily, read where God says that you will be rewarded for persecution, and continue to take the punches with joy.

What advice would you give to teens that are struggling with their faith and to those who have none at all? First of all, no matter where you are in your walk, never stop questioning or testing your faith. For those of you struggling with your faith, do not take the easy way out. Question and seek answers to explain why you are feeling this way. For those of you without a faith, consider this: Have you ever challenged your beliefs? Have you researched enough to give reasons why you do not believe? My advice to you is to support your lack of faith by understanding faith and by understanding all that Jesus Christ is. Everyone questions his or her faith at some point, and everyone loses faith at one point, but make sure that you can answer the question…why?

What is your schedule like for the summer? Where can one go to see you perform? We are going to be playing all summer at a church called the Park Community Church, which is located in the Rose Theater (Wurzbach & Lockhill Selma). We will also be playing for a few other events and camp retreats. You can find these dates as well as our entire schedule at www.facebook.com/adelynnmusic or www.myspace.com/adelynnmusic.

ChristeenJDear Christeen - I’m a Sophomore, and usually I wouldn’t be able to go to prom, but a boy who’s a Junior has asked me to go! At first, I was really excited, but then my parents said I couldn’t go. They say I’m “too young to date” and that they don’t trust any boy, especially an older one, to take me out yet. I’m so upset because I feel like they don’t trust me, even though I’m really responsible. Plus, I know enough about boys to know most of them are only after one thing, and there’s no way I’m gonna do that! Is there any way I can convince my parents to let me go? - Frustrated in Fort WorthDear Frustrated - Well, you do sound like a very responsible young lady, but I can also see why your parents are worried about you going to the prom. Boys can be very sweet and cunning when they are after that “one thing” you mentioned, and your parents know this. I’m sure it’s not that your parents don’t trust you, it’s just that they are afraid a boy might try to convince you to do something that (as you have already stated) you don’t want to do. I know you are very confident in yourself now, but plenty of smart and responsible girls have been convinced to do things they knew they shouldn’t have done. Take Eve for instance. I’m sure she was a very smart

woman, and yet Satan tempted her into eating an apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 3: 1-7). Although this may seem like a stretch from your situation, the point is that sometimes temptation can be very overwhelming. That being said, I think it is a very exciting thing for you to be invited to prom! And, to respond to your question, I do have some ideas. First: introduce this young man to your parents. If he

is a nice boy (as I’m sure he is) maybe meeting him will put your parents at ease. If some of your friends from school are going too, ask

your parents if you can go with the group and agree to stay as a group at the event. If you promise to do this, you should actually do it because if

you betray your parent’s trust, they will have no reason to trust you in the future. Another idea is that perhaps one of your parents could chaperone the event. This way they could keep an eye on you, which may not be comfortable for you, but would allow you to go and put your parents at ease. Or, if you have a cell phone, agree to pick up every time they call. But remember, if they don’t agree, you should follow their rules. Not going to prom is not the

end of the world, and you will have more proms to go to in the future. Love, Christeen
