CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it is?

• An ordinance to the church (Mat.28: 19; Mk. 16: 16)

• Commanded by the Lord Jesus (Mat.28: 19; Mk.16:15)

• Authority given by the Lord (Mat.28: 18)

• Practiced by the apostles (Acts.2: 41; Acts: 10: 48; Acts:19: 5)

• Continued by the believers (Acts.8: 38)

Page 4: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it is not?

• Not any deed to replace Circumcision (Gal.6: 15)

• Not continuation of any Old Testament rituals (Gal.2: 16; 3: 11)

• Not any deed for Salvation (Ep.2: 8)

• Not any deed for Purification (1.Pet.3: 21)

• Not “the Baptismal regeneration” (Baptism Symbolizes burial and resurrection; not the new birth. Rom.6: 3)

Page 5: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- Command of the Lord

• Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

(Authority?- Example- Mat. 21: 24)

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have

commanded you: (Command)

Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Assurance)

Page 6: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it symbolizes?

• An act of Obedience (Jn.14:15; Rom.6: 1-2)

• An act of identification to his burial and resurrection (Rom.6: 4; Col.2: 12)

• An act of allegiance (Joined to Christ) (Rom.6: 3; Gal.3: 27; Example. 1.Cor.10: 1-2)

• An act of putting on Christ (Gal.3: 27) (Shows to whom belong- Num.15: 37-41)

• An act of appeal toward God for a good conscience (1. Pet.3: 21)

Page 7: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it symbolizes?

• Romans 6: 3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

• Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:

• that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

• Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

(An act of identification to his death-burial and resurrection)

Page 8: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What Jesus meant?“Baptism to be baptized with” (Luke 12: 50)

• Luke 12: 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

• Not of the literal Baptism. (Jesus was baptized: Mat.3: 16)

• Then if spiritual what it means?

• For what he was going to Jerusalem? (Mat.16:21)

(Was He not pointing to his death, burial and resurrection, to be taken place of him in Jerusalem?)

Page 9: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it symbolizes ?

• Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

• And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; (1.Cor.10: 1-2)

• For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.(Gal.3: 27)

(An Act of full commit to the Lord-shows the stand with those who have committed to walk with Christ)

Page 10: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it means ?

• One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Eph.4: 5) (All believers are baptized with the baptism of the Holy

Spirit 1.Cor.12: 13)

• Baptism is “Act of immersing”

• What it means “ One Baptism”?

• Is it the Baptism of the Holy Spirit or the Water Baptism ?

(No one a believer with out the baptism of the Holy Spirit; but Baptism in water the visible expression to the world)

Page 11: Christian Baptism

CHRISTIAN BAPTISM

BAPTISM- What it express ?

• Appeal of a good conscience toward God (1.Pet.3: 21)

• When once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

• The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: (1.Pet.3: 20-21)

(Answer to a good conscience toward God- The willingness to obey His command, appeals the good conscience to the Lord)

Page 12: Christian Baptism

BAPTISM- Different from all previous baptisms.

• No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

• Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. (Mat.9: 16-17)

• An ordinance given to the Church

• Different from all previous baptisms.• Not a renewed or modified form of any other Baptisms.
