What Exactly is Messy Church?

Did you know there are six other Messy Church’s in Ohio? We’re in good company, and we would like to celebrate being one of the largest. In just three months, we have built a program that is averaging 93 in attendance, and are beginning to have “regular” new families joining us who are curious about baptism and faith formation for their children.

Messy Church is helping us to live out our mission to “Make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ.”

So who is Messy Church for? Messy Church is for all people, but is designed to welcome people into a faith community who are either unchurched, or have not been a part of a faith community in a while. It tends to attract families with young children, children with special needs, and people who are brand-new to Christian faith. Members and regular attendees of our church participate as well as hosts and friends. The role of our church community is to invite and attend with their friends and neighbors.

When people walk through our doors, they are warmly welcomed by the Kurtz family. They are then escorted by our kids to Messy Play, where wild and messy crafts and games introduce our Biblical theme for the day. Michelle Scaife, Mary Potts and Janet Mallarnee, along with some helpful youth and adults, play with our guests and help them begin to think about our message for the day. When it’s time for celebration, we walk with our guests to the Sanctuary. Here we celebrate God’s love for about 15 minutes. Pastor Carrie and Pastor Nathan share the Bible story – which may be the first time some of our guests have heard these stories. Bruce Akins and Emily Perry share popular music with a faith-twist, as we reimagine what worship looks and feels like. We exit to the Beatles song “Love, love, love” each time, and gather for a community meal, lovingly prepared by Sandy Marek, Linda Tucker, and Linda McCowen. Cindy McCowen captures all of the memories on camera. Families leave with new friends, new faith, and a feeling of welcome.

Obviously, Messy Church takes a village to put on, but it also opens up our village to new people. If you are interested in joining the Messy Team, you are welcome! Please contact Carolyn Williams, our fearless leader who would love to show you how to get messy! Another great way you can help us? Come to our next Messy Church, April 15th at 4 p.m., and BRING guests! Stop reading right now, and go invite them! You’ll have a great time finding faith community in the mess of life!

THE CALLER

As a Discipleship Collaborative (children, youth, and adult ministry teams), we are excited to announce the upcoming ReNew Week! This intergenerational experience will pull together some of our richest summer traditions into one fun-filled, faith-filled, fellowship week! Children, youth, and adults will come together for dinner and worship, and also have their own faith-formation opportunities.

Here’s what it will look like: Imagine disciples from all generations gathered around dinner tables and gathered together for worship. Imagine children heading outside and upstairs for a Vacation Bible School style experiences. Imagine adults gathered together to explore faithful stewardship of the earth and our communities. Imagine having a conversation across the generations about God’s work and plans for creation, and how we can be a part of this vision.

The week of July 9th, we will gather at 6 pm for dinner and worship, then move out to adult and children’s activities, then come back together for worship and blessing. We’ll conclude by 8 pm.

Children will have a Vacation Bible School like experience using “ReNew” by Sparkhouse publishers – the same group that we use for Sunday School. Adults will reflect on personal discipleship and creation, outreach opportunities, our social creed as United Methodists, and learn about our global mission partnerships. Youth are invited to volunteer with the children, or participate with the adults.

On Friday, we’ll have a fun day all together celebrating and imagining living together in harmony at the OhioGuidestone Farm! We will witness and have the opportunity to receive baptism or baptism renewal. We will also have a cook-out and offer a camp out experience for all of those who want to connect with nature overnight.

We will be grounded in Christ, and renewed by the Spirit as we explore what it means to plant seeds, take root, grow, face challenges, and live together.

The Homebuilders will be concluding our study of The Wesleyan Way in April and will begin discussing the spiritual challenges of aging. The authors of Pilgrimage Into the Last

Third of Life tell us that there are seven tasks during this time: facing aging and dying, learning to live with limitations, doing inner work, living in and out of community, prayer and contemplation, redeeming loss and suffering, and leaving a legacy. Having just discussed grace, we know that no matter the challenge that we are surrounded and nourished by grace upon grace.

Join us on Sunday mornings at 10a.m. in the Parlor!

THE CALLER

Our first season of small groups has gone great! Our small group communities are getting to know one another and are beginning to focus on their identity as groups. These groups will remain OPEN, and are always welcoming of new members. When groups become too large (around a dozen people), the group will break into two groups, and thus organically create more groups. Some new groups may start from scratch though at this point.

So, if you are not in a group, but would like to explore what small group life might be like, you are encouraged to consider these options:

Hop into an existing group. Here are the groups we currently have:

Wednesday 7 p.m. Group - led by Tom & Sandy Marek at their home. Contact office for more information.

Sunday 10 a.m. Group - led by Terry Kurtz and Greg Rentsch, in Room 27.

Homebuilders - Sundays at 10 a.m. in the Parlor - see the left column below for more information.

FaithLink - discussing faith and current events, Sundays at 10 a.m. in the library

Quilters Group - Tuesdays 9 a.m. in the Gathering Place. Bring a lunch!

Tuesday Morning Bible Study - Tuesdays at 9:05 a.m., Room 35, followed by prayer group at 10:05 a.m..

Start your own group, or express your desire and time/availability to Pastor Carrie.

Looking for a particular night-of-the-week group? Interested in forming a group around an interest that you have? Are you a parent looking for a parent support group? We can help you start a group! Reach out to Pastor Carrie for help with this exciting adventure.

Stay tuned – a couple groups are already under way. A Monday night group, and a Sunday parent group, are in the midst of creation as we speak.

Why small groups? Life is better together – let’s grow in faith together! Form authentic friendships, dive deep into your faith, and experience fellowship in a meaningful way. For questions, and to get connected, contact Pastor Carrie ([email protected], 440-234-3525 ext. 105)

Did you grow up during WWII?

If you did, you have precious memories that younger and future generations would like to hear. Memories of rationing, of recycling, of news reels, of missing a parent or sibling, and wondering what was happening in Europe and the Pacific are just some of the memories that we’d like to record and share. The Homebuilders community will be collecting and recording these memories this spring. We’d like to include as many people as possible from The United Methodist Church of Berea so if you’d like to be a part of this collection of memories please look for more specific information in the April/May Sunday bulletins. If you are homebound and would like to be included, please call the church office and we will include you in this collection of WWII era memories!

Introduction to Love and Logic Parenting & Power Struggles Workshop comes to UMCB!

Develop Strong Parenting Techniques and Strategies - Raise happy and well-behaved kids with positive, loving tools.

The Love and Logic® approach to parenting is built around the science of crafting caring and respectful relationships. An authentic, loving connection between parents and their children is the root of a healthy, thriving relationship built on trust and understanding.

Sounds easy enough but never before in history have parents been faced with so many challenges! Our approach provides a variety of simple and effective strategies for parenting children from birth to adulthood. Whether you’re embarking for the first time with your new baby or navigating the turbulent teens with your youngest, our strategies and techniques will help you create calm and loving solutions.

Choose "Love" The “Love” means that we love our kids so much that we are willing to set and enforce limits. This “Love” also means that we do so with sincere compassion and empathy.

Choose "Logic" The “Logic” happens when we allow children to make decisions, affordable mistakes and experience the natural or logical consequences. When we balance this with sincere empathy, they develop the following logic: The quality of my life depends on the quality of my choices.

This event is an introduction to Love and Logic and a workshop on power struggles. It is open to all parents with tots-teens. We are partnering with Strongsville United Methodist Church as a co-host and look forward to meeting new friends. Commission On the Status

and Role Of Women

“Nevertheless she persisted” is the theme for this year’s Women in History Month, which is March. Begun in 1978 as a project to honor women’s contributions to U.S. History, it was 1987 when Congress designated March as the month to emphasize the contributions. This comes at a time when women are emphasizing their role not only is headline grabbing shocking stories, but in the day -to-day contributions of women.

The General Commission on the Role and Status of Women was created in 1972. In 1976, The United Methodist Church established COSROW. At UMCB, COSROW has been highlighted since it’s first appearance in the caller in 1981. . .35 years and counting.

April 9 - “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon. Behind the cranky exterior, there is a story and a sadness. So when one Nov. morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats and unexpected friendship.

May 14 - “Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline

Between 1854-1929, so-called orphan trains ran regularly from cities on the east coast to the farmlands of the Midwest. An unforgettable story of friendship and second chances that highlights a litte-known but historically significant movement in America’s past.

YOU are always welcome.

Sunday, April 22

As part of our 11:15 am worship service on April 22, we will host the closing program of Baldwin Wallace University’s 2018 Bach Festival. BW’s Treble Choir will be with us to sing a variety of sacred songs throughout our worship service, directed by Jordan Saul.

All are welcome.

Native American Ministries Sunday is a very special celebration that United Methodist churches across the country celebrate every year. With a special offering on a designated Sunday in April, we honor and empower the Native Americans in our church community.

Native Americans — with many unique languages and cultures — honor Jesus and live as Christians led by a contingent of primarily Native American pastors. It is a joy to celebrate and embolden their congregations on this day!

Here are five reasons we believe in the importance of this Special Sunday:

We are committed to racial reconciliation. The struggles of First Americans are often invisible. As a result of historic and ongoing institutional racism, our Native communities experience high rates of poverty and suicide. As United Methodists, we have vowed to seek reconciliation with Native Americans and are committed to represent their community in a way that befits their proud heritage. This offering specifically supports Native American seminarians, strengthens, develops and equips Native American rural, urban and reservation congregations, ministries and communities and annual conference Native American Ministries.

We believe in funding justice efforts for Native Americans. “Social justice” is more than a buzzword for United Methodist congregations. With this offering, we are saying YES to creating programs that enrich, empower and educate. So many people want to support our First Americans but don’t know where to start. Giving generously on this Sunday is an easy way to show our support.

When we give together, we do more. Connectionalism is a high priority for our denomination. We believe in joining together, as congregations, to celebrate together on six Special Sundays throughout the year. This particular Special Sunday is the biggest impact we make together for Native American communities.

We believe in taking care of our own family. As United Methodists, we are committed to serving and giving all over the world, but we are just as committed to caring for our own communities. 1 Timothy 5:8 challenges us to take care of our own family. On Native American Ministries Sunday, we do just that.

We want to model generosity for our communities and future generations. Generosity leaves a legacy. When we give as a community, we tell our local community that we care. When we give as a community to diverse causes, we are making sure people know that our churches are externally focused. We believe in diversity, and we believe in supporting all people. On this day, we make sure to support our First Americans.

Join us to give generously on Native America Ministries Sunday, April 15.

Together we do more.

When the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu spent a week together celebrating the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday, Douglas Abrams took notes and

interviewed them, and the result was "The Book of Joy," a New York Times bestseller. They both have suffered oppression, hardships, and turmoil, and yet they both have been able to achieve peace and joy. In this book they share their insights about the nature of joy and their advice about practicing joy in our everyday lives. Even though their own life experiences have been very different, they agree that true joy is found within the heart and mind, not in external circumstances. This book is in the category of "Nurturing for Community."

Ohio Guidestone Promise Run - May 12

Do you think you can outrun your pastors? Do you want to sweat with your church staff for a good cause? Then join us for a 1 mile walk, or a 5K or 10K run in support of OhioGuidestone! Our team name is “United Methodist Church of Berea” (Clever, huh?). $5 off registration if you register ahead. To register or for more information visit: www.OhioGuidestone.org/PromiseRun

Spring is right around the corner and all that “Spring Cleaning” will soon be upon us. UMCB’s Youth Work Mission Team is ready and willing to help you with those jobs.

All of the proceeds will help them with their work mission costs this summer. Let us know if you need a youth or two, or a whole crew, to help you this spring.

Contact Clayton Allen with your request at 440-596-7431 or [email protected].

Strawberry Festival 2018

The 47th Annual Strawberry festival is closer than you think! Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 5 for this year’s celebration. In recent years, I have struggled to have enough volunteers from our own congregation to staff this event so everyone can be served in a timely fashion. So much so that I have reached out to an outside volunteer agency to help. I would very much like to keep this “in house” this year. Please consider giving a small amount of your time to help out. You do not have to work the whole night and you will receive a FREE dish of strawberries and ice cream for your service! This is a community event that is very well attended and requires many volunteers in order to be successful. Look for the sign up board in the Narthex in early May. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
