The purpose of our tour is both educational and inspirational. In visiting
these significant sites – cities and towns, churches, colleges and seminaries
associated with early Puritanism, Presbyterianism, Methodism, the Baptist
faith, and other notable people and movements – we broaden and
deepen our understanding of how these formative influences have
impacted not only our own life and faith but contemporary
American Christianity in general.

America has been blessed in terms of the spiritual and religious influences that
have impacted our national history from colonial times to the present. Our 9-day
“Christian History Tour of America” features many of the most important and
influential sites in New England, New York City and Washington D.C. that have
contributed to this unique heritage.

The Itinerary
1. Boston, MA and environs • Boston Common. Including the most significant historical churches and
monuments in downtown Boston. • Harvard College. America’s first college, established in 1636 by Puritan
Congregationalists. • Salem. Home of the infamous Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692.
2. Northampton, MA• Lexington and Concord. Sites of the battles that sparked the American
Revolution in April of 1775. • First Churches of Northampton. The home church for Jonathan Edwards,
America’s preeminent pastor and theologian during the Great Awakening revivalmovement of 1734-42.
3. Plymouth, MA• The site of Plymouth Plantation, the colony established in 1620 by English
Separatists (the “Pilgrims”).
4. Providence, RI• The First Baptist Church in America founded in 1638 by Roger Williams.
5. New Haven, CT• Yale University. A tour of America’s third-oldest college, established by Puritan
Congregationalists in 1701.

Riverside Church, New York City
Princeton Seminary
6. New York City, NY• Riverside Church. Founded in 1930,
this Neo-Gothic structure (the tallest church building in America) is located
in Upper Manhattan. Originallyconceived by John D. Rockefeller,Riverside Church served for severalgenerations as the home base for liberalProtestantism under pastors such asHarry Emerson Fosdick and WilliamSloane Coffin. NOTE: Along withUnion Theological Seminary (seebelow), this visit provides an opportunity to discuss the corruption and declineof mainline Protestantism over the past century.
• Union Theological Seminary. Founded in 1836, UTS is one of the first andmost influential of the mainline Protestant seminaries that rejected thebiblically-based theology of the Reformation in favor of the Social Gospel,Liberation Theology, Feminist Theology, and other liberal trends over the past150 years. Affiliated with Columbia University, UTS was the home of influentialliberal and neo-orthodox theologians such as Walter Rauschenbusch, PaulTillich, Reinhold Niebuhr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, James Cone and Cornel West.
• Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Founded in 1989 by Presbyterian pastorTimothy Keller, RPC is the most influential conservative church in New YorkCity with a ministry that attracts many young professionals.
7. Princeton, NJ • Princeton Theological Seminary. Founded in 1812, Princeton Seminary is
the second-oldest seminary in the U.S. For more than a hundred years Princetonwas a bullwark of Presbyterian Reformed theology under the influence oftheologians such as Archibald Alexander, Charles Hodge, B. B. Warfield andJohn Gresham Machen. In 1929 the seminary was reorganized along moretheologically liberal lines, which led to Machen’s resignation and the subsequentfounding of Westminster Theological Seminary. However, the seminarycontinued to retain at least some scholarly credibility until recent years as thehome of Bruce Metzger, the renowned biblical scholar and textual critic.

8. Washington, D.C. • Washington National Cathedral. Chartered in 1893, this Neo-Gothic
structure is the second-largest church building in the U.S. and the seat of thepresiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. Designated by Congress as the“National House of Prayer,” it hosts many official events such as presidentialinaugural prayer services and state funerals and memorial services for formerpresidents and dignitaries.
• Museum of the Bible. Founded in 2017, this is the world’s largest collectionof biblical manuscripts, artifacts and historical documents.
