10 Shanghai Centre Retail News

Greetings residents and tenants, Welcome to the premiere issue of our newly-redesigned magazine, featuring more information and more pictures of...YOU enjoying life at your doorstep. Each issue showcases a hot new topic as seen through the lens of Shanghai Centre. This first issue zooms in on a perennial favorite - FASHION, as we reveal the first, and so far the only, Christian Louboutin boutique in China...located where else but right here at Shanghai Centre. To the men out there who aren't dialed into the fashion scene, Christian Louboutin is the world's most sought-after shoe designer whose trademark red-soled stilettos can easily cost over RMB 30,000 a pair. (So be careful if your wife were to ask you to choose between a trip to Europe or a pair of shoes at Shanghai Centre for her birthday gift!) I'm also excited to announce the imminent opening of three new F&B merchants for your culinary enjoyment: Crêpes & Co will be serving their decadent name-sake products starting late March. You can wash down your crêpes with a warm pot of tea over at Wang De Chuan Tea House. And we have also closed the doors to Hanagatami to make way for an authentic and modern Japanese restaurant experience this summer. With so many amazing choices, why go anywhere else but Shanghai Centre to satiate your cravings? For our apartment residents, we have recently opened a comfortable Reading Lounge where they can unload their stress in a tranquil environment, complete with OSIM massage chairs, delicious Italian coffee, loads of interesting books, and a warm fireplace. My team and I hope that you continue to enjoy our on-going efforts to improve the quality of life here at Shanghai Centre. Thank you. Byron KanGeneral Manager

ChristianLouboutin

someone who’s such an unabashed perfectionist, Christian Louboutin seems uncharacteristically relaxed and down to earth – especially relative to his peers in the fashion world who tend to be almost comically fussy and demanding. Louboutin brushes off things like Paris Fashion Week (the very raison d’etre for others in his line of work) with a dismissive shrug, hesitating to even identify himself with the rest of the fashion world. Yet it’s a world which he presently sits atop confidently and rather casually, eating red grapes and sipping champagne on a chaise lounge, twirling a black stiletto on his finger by its leather strap. It’s not that he’s being smug, it’s just that that’s really how he is. Louboutin has plenty of reasons to be happy these days. His designer shoes sell on average for 5,000RMB a pair, with customized shoes going for 45,000RMB or more. And he sells about 800,000 pairs a year world-wide. One particularly special pair featured soles made of real rubies. With China’s booming market for luxury goods, it’s no surprise Louboutin decided to come East, opening two stores in Beijing and Shanghai, the latter located on Xikang Road at Shanghai Centre. But even Christian Louboutin has a temper. And when fellow designer Yves St. Laurent tread on sacred territory by using Louboutin’s signature red soles on a new line of YSL high heels last year, Louboutin fired back with a lawsuit, claiming that YSL was stepping on his toes. For most women, the name Christian Louboutin instinctively comes to mind the moment a flash of red emanates from beneath a pair of high-heeled stilettos. It’s that same instant brand recog-nition men feel when they see the Nike “swoosh” sign. “I selected the color [Chinese Red] because it is engaging, flirtatious, memorable, and the color of passion,” Louboutin said in his petition to the court, noting that he patented the signature red sole in 2007. “Men are like bulls,” Louboutin says. “They cannot resist the red sole.” Born to a cabinet maker and a housewife, Louboutin grew up in Paris and lived anything but the usual childhood. He moved out of his family home at the age of 12, and his first job was assisting dancers backstage at the cabaret Folies Bergeres. It was there that he cultivated his interest in women’s shoes, as well as a love of life in the spotlight, and of women who could move gracefully onstage in improbably high heels.

Today, Christian Louboutin is unrivaled as the most influential shoe designer in the world. Thumb through the pages of any fashion or celebrity magazine and you’ll see them on the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Christina Aguilera (who wrote a song about her Louboutin stilettos) and Sarah Jessica Parker (who featured Louboutin prominently in Sex and the City 2). So what’s all the fuss about? Well, in a word, as Louboutin would proudly tell you himself: “sex.” “I think that shoes are connected to something quite sexual,” he says. “They change a woman’s body language. They change a woman’s attitude so that she becomes conscious of the body. Louboutin claims that the ultimate consumers of his shoes are, in fact, men. “When a woman buys a pair of shoes, she never looks at the shoe,” he says. “She stands up and looks in the mirror, she looks at the breast, the [buttocks], from the front, from the side…The core of my work is dedicated not to pleasing women, but to pleasing men.” Indeed, the magic of Louboutin heels is that they make a woman’s legs appear longer, and change the shape of her body, emphasizing the breasts and accentuating her bottom. “I haven’t yet met a woman who told me, ‘I wish I had shorter legs,’” he posits. Indeed, Louboutin’s shoes are more like an extension of the body, as sleek, bold and perfect in their shape as a Porsche 911. Then there are the materials he favors – shiny black leather, spikes, the occasional flash of a bare pinky toe…it all adds up to what he calls “the ideal mistress shoe” – may comfort be damned. Louboutin is not interested in comfort. He’s interested in raw, visceral sex appeal. “I’ll do shoes for the lady who lunches, but it would be, like, a really nasty lunch, talking about men,” Louboutin famously said in an interview with The New Yorker magazine. The Christian Louboutin Shanghai Centre store’s Grand Opening was held in December, for which Louboutin was of course himself on hand. So far, business has been, not surprisingly, red hot. Given the love Shanghainese women have for fashion, and their long legs which seem perfectly suited for stiletto heels, Louboutin and China are a match made in heaven...or in Italy, at least. So next time you’re walking down Nanjing Xi Lu and catch a burst of China Red from beneath a pair of golf tee-size heels, smile. You’ve just been flashed by Christian Louboutin.

Says Sex Appeal Starts at the Feet

High Tea at the Ritz BarAn English tradition brought to Asia is now in Shanghai. And

what place could be more suitable for such an event than the stylish ambiance of the Ritz Bar? Residents were invited to

indulge in a three–tier English afternoon tea set with freshly bakes scones, sandwiches and pastries. It was an afternoon

tea fit for Queen Catherine (the 17th century monarch often credited with having started the tradition), herself.

Not Your Grandmother's CameoMiu Miu's Chic New Twist on the Antique Cameo

Inspired by Victorian-era hand-carved cameos, Miu Miu offers a hot new accessory for spring/summer 2012 that puts a thoroughly modern twist on a centuries-old fashion statement. Each cameo is hand-crafted, using the same artisan crafting techniques traditionally employed to make these classic jewelery pieces. Colored plexi figures hang on velvet necklace straps, sit on chunky cuffs and hang from earrings. The overlapping materials create multi-colored surfaces displaying female portraits, made even more precious by gold inlays. Elegant velvet straps and cuffs, inspired by the collection's details, further enhance the charm of bracelets and necklaces. Miu Miu cameos are available in blue, geranio, grey, red, sole and white, at the Shanghai Centre Miu Miu store starting in March. Suite A03 / t: 6289-8087

Get Sporty This Spring with Loro Piana

You probably know the name Loro Piana for their exquisite wool and cashmere designs, including elegant scarves, sweaters, and jackets. But you might not be familiar with their more sporty accessories. This spring debuts the new My Sneaker Walk, made from garment-washed, yarn-dyed cotton denim and suede with anti-splash treatment. A large zip-fastened bag designed to carry everything you need for a tennis match or training session, it’s made of Delon leather with anti-splash treatment and features a cotton shoulder strap that’s both practical and refined. Stefano Ricci Celebrates 40 Years with Tribute to Jack Vettriano

The elegant Tuscan beaches of Versilia are the backdrop to the works of world-renowned Scottish painter Jack Vettriano, and to the 2012 collection by Stefano Ricci. The Florentine haute couture fashion house, with 22 boutiques across the world, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a new catalog inspired by Vettriano’s paintings. The artist’s most well-known work, “The Singing Butler” (which sold on auction for a record price of 750,000 pounds at Sotheby’s) is reinterpreted with the same graceful dance steps on the beach in the rain, only this time through the lens of leading Italian portrait photographer Fredi Marcarini. The collector’s edition catalogue features the 2012 collection from Stefano Ricci, an experience of beauty, aesthetics and functionality with hand-made craftsmanship assimilated from the grand artistic experience.
