• Christmas celebrates Jesus’s birth.

• It is celebrated by Christians

Origins

• Jesus was conceived by the Virgin Mary through Immaculate Conception, the belief that she conceived of Jesus without sex.

• She and her husband, Joseph, fled the rule of King Herod because he ordered that all new born children be killed in fear that one of them may steal his throne.

Origins

• They found shelter in a stable in Bethlehem because all inns were filled.

• Jesus was born in a manger.

The Three Wise Men

• Three wise men saw a star in the sky and believed that it signified the coming of the Messiah.

The Three Wise Men

• They followed the star and ended up at Jesus’sbirth place. 

• They offered gifts of:– Gold

– Myrrh

– Frankincense  

How Christmas is Celebrated Today.• Although Christmas is a Christian holiday, many of the traditions and practices come from pagan origins.

• This was done by Christians in order to avoid persecution.

Pagan Traditions 

• Evergreen Tree

• Celebrated in December

• It was a pagan tradition to bring an Evergreen tree into the home during the winter time.

December Celebration

• Christmas was celebrated in the winter time because it was the same time that pagans celebrated the winter solstice. No one would think that the Christians were celebrating Christmas because it was assumed that they were celebrating the winter solstice.
