CURIOSITIES
The statue of liberty can
be considered the
greatest Christmas gift
ever done! In fact, the
French gave it to the
American the 25th of
December as sign of
friendship.
In Czech Republic it’s a Christmas tradition
for unmarried woman to position themselves
in front of the house door turning their back
and throw a shoe backwards. If it falls with
the tip of the shoe facing the door, it means
they will find the love by the end of year.
In Serbia there is the strange tradition of
opening presents two Sundays before Xmas.
What makes this tradition unique is that the
kids are used to kidnap themselves tying up
their feet and then ask for a ransom which is
usually paid with presents.
In Norway the tradition wants the 24th
December all the cleaning objects are hidden
in home, because it is thought that during the
night some bad witches come to steal all the
brooms.
In Spain the nativity is a tradition, but in
Catalogna among the shepherds there is the
“Caganer” that is a shepherd with his pants
down… it is thought that it brings luck.
In southern Africa a typical dish is fried
insects!
Only the 1% of Chinese celebrates
Christmas, even if most of the decorations
are made in China.

TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS
MAKE-UP I don’t suggest a heavy make-up for
the Christmas dinner but to go out with
friends it is ideal a red lipstick like fire,
a gold eye shadow with a shape of red,
a bit of pink blush and black eyeliner.
For your nails, a gold or a red and
white nail polish; the
decorations are a
lot but the nicest
one is a reindeer,
Rudolf, who peeks
out of the hem of the nail.
CLOTHES As a dress, l suggest a red, blue or
little black dress to match with black or
red heel shoes.
TABLE DECORATIONS The less expensive table decoration is
a white table cloth, white dishes and
red napkin bent like a flame. To do it
fold the corner on its opposite one to
do a triangle; then roll the lower
corners until they connect. Lastly, fix it
in place with a nice Christmas pin. (E. Ferrari)
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Christmas traditions vary from country to
country.
Christmas celebrations for many nations
include the installing and lighting of Christmas
trees, the hanging of
Advent wreaths,
Christmas stockings,
candy canes, setting
out cookies and milk,
and the creation of
Nativity scenes
depicting the birth of
Jesus Christ. Christmas
carols may be sung and stories told about
such figures as the Baby Jesus, St Nicholas,
Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Christkind or
Grandfather Frost.
The sending and exchange of Christmas card
greetings, observance of fasting and special
religious observances such as a midnight
Mass or Vespers on Christmas Eve, the
burning of a Yule log, and the giving and
receiving of presents.
In Spain
Christmas and St Stephen's Day are officially
recognized holidays in Spain.
As a dessert, there is quite a spread of
delicacies, among them are turron, a dessert
made of honey, egg and almonds that is
Arabic in origin.
Special dishes and desserts include Mariscos
y Pescado (shellfish and fish), marzipan,
Pavo Trufado de Navidad (turkey
with truffles), and polvorones (shortbread
made of almonds, flour and sugar).
Children usually receive one or two presents
on Christmas Day (December 25th), brought
by "Papá Noel" (Father Noel).
In India
Being a British colony until 1947, many British
traditions stayed on in India.
Christmas is a state holiday in India,
although Christianity in India is a minority with
only 2.3% of the population.
Many Christian houses in India decorate
Christmas cribs. In many of the schools that
are run by the Christian missionaries, the
children actively participate in Christmas
programs. Also in many non-religious
schools, there is tradition of Christmas
celebration.

FOOD
1. Turkey This one is probably one of the most
popular dishes at Christmas, because
it is usually the main course. People
often buy a frozen turkey, thaw it,
and then roast it in the oven for a
couple of hours before adding
garnishes, sauces…and then it’s ready
to carve and serve!
2. Roast
Potatoes
There is
nothing like a
scoop of
properly roasted potatoes! These are often
cut into small squares, and put into the oven
with goose fat or olive oil, along with herbs
such as parsley and thyme, and salt and
pepper. Once the edges are browned, the
potatoes are good to go!
3. Christmas pudding Christmas pudding is a dessert that is made from dried fruit and is normally served with brandy butter. It is also tradition to soak the cake with brandy and set it alight before serving. A Christmas pudding made with figs is referred to as “figgy pudding.” Christmas pudding is the most traditional dessert!.
4. Mince Pies
Mince pies are tiny
pies that are filled
with fruits such as
raisins, cranberries,
and sultanas, as well as chopped nuts
and spices such as cinnamon, sugar, and
nutmeg. Once they are baked, they are
dusted with a little icing sugar and
ready to eat – perfect as nice finish to a
delicious Christmas dinner!
