CHRISTMAS MESSAGES FROM THE

ACTING HEADTEACHER: DECEMBER 2018

W elcome to the last newsletter of 2018! The Autumn Term at school is always a very busy one indeed, but it is

also one of the most enjoyable. We have a whole range of opportunities in which to showcase our wonderful and talented students (and dedicated staff!), such as the Christmas Concerts, Sports Presentation Evening, performances at Mansion House, and our three Prizegiving ceremonies, more of which about below. In the true spirit of ‘Love as Brethren’ the school has been involved in a host of charity activities this term, many of which are mentioned in this newsletter. As well as raising money for good causes, students collected goods to be placed in Christmas hampers, which were then distributed to grantees of The Coopers’ Company. We also hosted our annual Christmas ‘Bow Party’ for visually impaired students from the Joseph Clarke School. As I mentioned in my Prizegiving speech, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. The concept of serving others is vital to us as a school – it is part of the character and culture of our organisation - and I truly believe that our charity work is the perfect embodiment of this concept.

The Prizegiving ceremonies were a huge success, and I want to thank the staff, parents, Governors, guests and The Worshipful Company of Coopers for their hard work in preparing for the ceremonies, and their participation during them, as well as their unrelenting support of the school. In the evening ceremony, the Guest Speaker was Dr Paul Kelly, an ‘old boy’ of the school. He gave a fascinating talk outlining his career path and the lessons he had learned along the way. Our Guest Speaker being a doctor was a huge draw for many of our students, and he had a queue of prospective medics wanting to seek his advice at the end of the evening! However, the reals stars of the three Prizegiving ceremonies were the students. It is always so humbling to see the amazing things our students achieve, and how successful they are. The ceremonies are not just a celebration of academic excellence; they are also a showcase for the array of talents our students possess. Our students are inspirational in every sense of the word. Therefore, it leaves me to wish you all a very peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you to all the parents and carers of our students – I look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you in 2019.

I t has been a busy first term and end to 2018 in the geography department. All of our geographers have been busy both in class and at home. Our Year 7s have been designing flags representing the unique and extreme characteristics

of Antarctica.

The five lucky flags are on their way to Antarctica, where they will be united with an Antarctic scientist. In the New Year we will find out exactly where in Antarctica they have been.

Aside from Year 7s, Year 8s have designed rainforest games, which improve in geographical quality every year, while our Year 9s have been busy designing model volcanoes as well as exploding them! Meanwhile, our GCSE students—whether returning Year 11s or new Year 10s—have made a great start to the year. Our A Level students have also been busy and have continued to show their critical thinking skills, either looking at the processes involved in placemaking, the interrelationships of our dynamic coastal environments or completing independent investigations. As a department we want to send congratulations to our 42 Year 13 geographers on producing some excellent investigations as part of their A-Levels. Wishing all of our geographers a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

C alling all writers!! The English Department are launching two writing competitions. The Winter

Writing Competition will be announced in English lessons in the week commencing 3rd December and it is a fiction competition. The Spring Writing Competition will be announced before Easter and it is a non-fiction competition. There will be separate writing tasks and prizes for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. To be kept up-to-date with competition information, please join the Writing Competitions Google Classroom (Class Code: 8e513u). The Google Classroom will also be used to send information about public competitions and other writing help and prompts.

T hank you to Mrs Foreman and students for taking 127 shoeboxes filled with goodies, as well as £254 towards transportation costs, to Link to Hope.

T his term we bid a fond farewell to Mr Bob Norris, our long-serving piano teacher, who is retiring from piano lessons this Christmas. Lots of you

may know him and also his wife Eileen, who also worked here for many years. They have been stalwarts of the school and the Music Department over the years, with their granddaughter attending Coopers Coborn too. We wish Bob and Eileen all the very best for the future.

Y ear 10 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students took part in a Festive Yule Log Challenge. They were tasked with making and decorating a Yule Log in one 60 minute lesson—certainly an ambitious challenge!

The finished cakes were judged by Mr Marshall, Head of Year 10, who was very impressed with the skills shown by the students, especially given the time constraints.

O ur Year 8 Ambassadors continue to do a fantastic job each morning, helping out in the School Office. A special thank you goes to Amelia and Noel for decorating the Christmas tree in Reception.

A special big thank you to Derek and the whole team at Accent Catering for looking after us so

well all year round. Last Wednesday they cooked 400 Christmas dinners for everyone, and here are Year 12 pictured having their own celebration.

I t has been a busy few weeks for the Music Department! On 30th November, Big Band provided the entrance and exit music for Sports Presentation, performing Friends Like Me, Lady Marmalade and Maniac..

On Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th December, they hosted their annual Christmas Concerts, featuring performances by Palmer Orchestra, Big Band, Junior Choir, Wind Quartet, Symphonic Wind Band, Senior Choir, Senior Jazz Band, Brass Band, Gibson Orchestra and Year 7 Singers. They were also joined by the Rheinbach School Choir and Orchestra who travelled all the way from Germany to tour the country! The audience enjoyed a variety of performances including Crazy In Love, A Million Dreams, Harry Potter, Fix You and Radioactive as well as several festive favourites such as Sleigh Ride, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Both concerts were very well attended, with one audience member commenting: “What an amazing, eclectic evening … we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and could listen to it all over again.” Special thanks to Oscar Eastman for his fantastic compering and interesting facts! Christmas doesn’t end there—the Choirs also performed at the St Laurence Carol Service on 12th December and the St Botolph’s Service on 18th December, and Symphonic Wind Band showcased their talents at Prizegiving on 13th December.

A njeli Valydon performed in the 40th Anniversary National Children’s Orchestra Winter Concert on Sunday 9th December at The Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank.

As one of the older musicians in the orchestra and having been a member for 4 years, Anjeli represented the school on 2nd bassoon and performed professional standard music including Festive Overture by Shostakovich, Peter Grimes by Britten and La Mer by Debussy, as well as accompanying former BBC Young Musician of the Year Nicola Benedetti who performed Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. Miss Moseley was supporting in the audience and commented on how professional the sound of the orchestra was and was astonished by the mature sound created by the musicians, made up of 13-15 year olds. Well done Anjeli! We have also just heard that Thomas Warner has been offered a place in the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain! Well done Thomas!

T hank you to our Head of Art, Mr Withyman, for running the annual Christmas Card Competition for Year 7 students. Each year the winning entry is made into our school Christmas card. After much deliberation by

the judges, Louise Harrington in Form 7.7 was declared the winner for her delightful and festive depiction of the school crest and for cleverly re-designing the camels into reindeers! Well done Louise.

Y ear 11 have been fundraising for the annual Bow Party which took place in the School Canteen on Monday 17th December between 4-6pm. Last Friday we were joined by a new teacher, Miss Ellis, who stood in as Head of

Year 11 for the day to raise money for this worthy cause.

E ach year we host Joseph Clarke School, a centre of excellence for visual impairment in the South East of England. They offer education and support for pupils with vision impairment and additional or complex needs.

Year 11 have been busy fundraising this term with cake sales, torturing teachers by making them run the Argyle Run, quizzes, karaoke and even dressing up their Head of Year, Mr Ellis!! On Monday 17th December the Dining Room was turned into Santa’s Grotto and the children all received a special gift from Santa and took part in games and dancing.

I t really brings the best out of our students here at CCCS and is one of our many long-standing traditions.

O n Wednesday 12th December Mrs Rosher held a Christmas themed Science Club. Students used chromatography to make Christmas tree decorations, making fake snow with sodium polyacrylate (the absorbent material inside

nappies), and had a lot of fun testing their snowman catapults!

CHARITY NEWS

O n Friday 16th November we held our annual Bring a Pound for Pudsey and raised over £800 for Children in

Need. Thank you to all those who contributed.

Non-Uniform : Friday 23rd November 2018

I n the true spirit of Love as Brethren, on Friday 23rd November we held a whole school non-uniform day. On this day we encouraged students to wear light blue, pink or yellow. Students contributed £2 to wear non-uniform and we

were overwhelmed as we raised an amazing £3,030. The money raised was donated directly to Mid Essex Hospitals Trust and in particular to bereavement support for the labour ward. This is an issue which has affected our whole school community and is a charity we are very keen to support.

O n the last day of term, Wednesday, 19th December, we will be holding our annual Christmas Jumper Day where there will be prizes for the best (most unusual) jumpers. Once again, we ask students to contribute £2 for this

non-uniform day with all money going directly to school charities.

Y ears 7, 8 and 9 have been filling Christmas care hampers with seasonal food such as mince pies, Christmas puddings, biscuits, chocolates, preserves, tea, coffee, tins of soup and other canned items for Grantees of The Coopers’

Company, who may be elderly, infirm, in need of financial assistance, or without any family. Thank you so very much to all our parents who have been so generous. Once filled, the boxes were decorated with wrapping paper, Christmas ribbons and bows. Each form group wrote letters to the boxes’ recipients. Thank you to Mr Bonnett and our Charity Reps for organising this annual project and a special thank you to Mr Vickers in the Canteen for donating a special hamper from his grandchildren. We sincerely hope that the Grantees enjoy their 44 hampers and letters and that it makes their Christmas that much brighter!
