Fanfare for Christmas

Anna Laura PageEight optional handchimes (ranging from G5-G6), organ, and brass, combine with 3-5 octaves of handbells in this medley of the carols Joy to the World, There’s a Star in the East, and O Come All Ye Faithful. The piece begins with a bold and bright fanfare before relaxing into a somewhat free section with the handchimes carrying the melody. A full texture returns for the final section and big ending. Brass ensem-ble consists of 2 Trumpets, French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

Hart MorrisConrad Kocher’s hymn As with Gladness Men of Old gets a fresh treatment in this setting by energetic arranger Hart Morris. The accompaniment features syncopation and off-beat accents in contrast to the straight rendering of the tune. 54 mea-sures in length, it is written for a FULL three octaves in C Major.

The Joy of Christmas

On the surface, THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS is an arrangement of two traditional Christmas carols, Joy to the World and How Great Our Joy. It is actually a musical portrait of the joy surrounding the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to the two main carols, the inspiration for the opening fanfare, the interludes between the carols and the coda comes from other carols whose texts use the word "joy". In the opening fanfare one can hear strains of "O come, all ye faithful," "let heaven and nature sing," and "joyful and triumphant." The interlude following the first verse of Joy to the World uses the melodic ideas from "O come, all ye faithful" and "Joyful all ye nations rise" while inviting us to join the angels in proclaiming the joy and glory of Christ's birth. The music after How Great Our Joy was inspired by the words "let heaven and nature sing," "How great our joy," "Joyful and triumphant" and "O tidings of comfort and joy." After the return of Joy to the World, the melodic fragment "O tidings of comfort and joy" serves as a bridge to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare. This setting concludes with a rousing musical statement that recalls the words "joyful and triumphant."

Michael Joy

MICHAEL JOY lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has been directing handbell choirs since 1978. He studied handbells with Donald Allured at Westminster Choir College and handbell composition with Arnold Sherman at Concordia University Wisconsin. Michael has been teaching music in Philadelphia area independent schools since 1983. He is currently the Middle School Music Teacher at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania where he has fifteen different handbell groups. For the past twenty-nine years he has been the Music Director at First Presbyterian Church in Ambler, Pennsylvania. Michael has also taught at Villanova University, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District Workshops, American Guild of English Handbell Ringers Area II and Area III Festivals and at Handbell Exploration in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He is a ringer and the Composer-in-Residence for the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble. An active member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Michael is serving his second term as Secretary for Area II.

Arnold ShermanThis simple but interesting arrangement is based on ADESTE FIDELES and W ZLOBIE LEZY. The texture is chordal until measure thirty-two where an alternat-ing, quarter-note pattern is set up in the accompaniment. Periodically mallets on suspended bells are called for.
