christmas potluck - fort myers beach...
TRANSCRIPT
December 2015, January 2016
President’s Message
Welcome Back !!!!!!! We are seeing more and
more familiar faces at the gallery. There are also a
lot of new faces, which is good. Welcome to these
new members. If you see me around and we have
not met, please say hello so I can get to know you. I
am terrible with names, but usually remember
faces.
Fort Myers Beach Art Association received a $5000
grant from the Southwest Florida Community
Foundation on November 18, 2015. We need to
give them a big thank you. Also a thank you is in
order to Michele Buelow for doing all the paper
work for this grant.
We have many things on the calendar for this
season. Please consult the Year Book, Brush Off
and Website. Tom Flaherty has a new website that
has a wealth of information on it. We will be
putting more of the boiler plate material on the
website and streamlining the Brush Off to some
degree. Kathy Taylor has done a great job with the
Brush Off and it also contains a wealth of
information. We have decided that some of the
information doesn’t need to be in multiple places,
so these documents will be massaged so that they
can be managed more efficiently.
I would like to thank all the volunteers that help
with all our ventures. FMBAA would not exist
without you. I am looking forward to a great
season. Have a Happy and Merry Holiday Season.

2015 Paint the Beach
..........A hot success!!!
In spite of the heat and traffic, Paint the Beach was
a nice success and great time for the artists. We
had terrific support from local and national
businesses as well as the artists themselves. The
dedication of my committee cannot be appreciated
enough. They worked very hard to make this event
run smoothly and well. It is thanks to them that our
treasury is augmented by over $6000.
Participating artists appreciated all we did for them,
the goody bags, the food, the lovely reception. As
they left on Sunday, we heard ”see you next year”!!
I would like to thank especially my chairmen Kay
Cowan, Kathryn Miller, and Mary Chaikowsky
who was at the tent as much as me, Milly Pereira,
Mary Klunk, Cheryl Fausel, Julie Nusbaum,
Jeanette Chupak, Helma Gansen and of course
most especially George Buelow who is not only
the money man but lugs, totes and listens to me.
Our president Floyd Lawrence took care of the
demo, slugging the chairs himself and was at the
tent every day, thank you Floyd! Many thanks to
volunteers who spent hours helping, Henry
Gansen especially, Sharon Hegstrom, Meg
Bushnell and Patty O’Kane for supplies for the
Beach Elementary School painters. Jaime
Huffman from Fish-Tale Marina/Santini Marina
Plaza handled the marketing, gala arrangements
and much more. Judge Joseph W.Palmerio did
an excellent job of judging the main competition
and we thank him for his participation. Thank-you
to Quick Draw judge Ava Roeder, adult division,
and Patty O’Kane, student division. And thanks to
all the volunteers who worked during the festival.
The Paint the Beach event was sponsored by Fort
Myers Beach Art Association, The Greater Fort

Plein Air Adventure at Beach Elementary School Thanks to everyone who helped with Beach Elementary School plein air adventure on the beach October 22. We had a beautiful day and the students were so excited to actually paint on the beach! Holly Nichols did a great job preparing for the event and volunteers were: Michele Buelow, Floyd Laurence, Joanne Shamp, Joan
Zeoli and Betsy LaPlaca. Painting supplies were gathered and sent by Patty O'Kane. All agreed it was a fun day. Paintings were displayed at Paint the Beach event. Milly Pereira, event organizer
The Gallery and Gallery Sitters
Yes, this is going to be another article about the need
for gallery sitters! FMBAA is a working gallery and there
is a critical need to have sitters in order to keep it open
and available to the public and our own artists.
The job description is simple. Open and close the
gallery, greet visitors and answer their questions,
answer the phone, sell any items for purchase, and
maintain a clean, friendly environment. It is both an
easy and rewarding job. While any one entering
paintings in a show, must gallery sit that does not
provide enough sitters to keep the building open seven
days a week. There are almost 200 members in this art
association and if everyone worked once during season,
we would have no problem keeping the gallery open.
If you are willing to do the job but need more
information or training, there will be two ways you can
get help. First, on Wed., Jan 13, Donna Bergeron will
gallery sit and will be available to train and/or answer
any questions you may have about the job. Second, on
Fri., Jan 15 after the open house, Donna will again be
available to help with any questions you have about
gallery sitting.
Please remember that it is a privilege to belong to such a fine art association, but with every privilege there is also a responsibility. Thank you for any help you can give of time, talent or enthusiasm
Donna Bergeron
Artist Profile...
Sylvia Kasparie joined the FMBAA in 1987 and has been
an active member over the years. She was president of
FMBAA from 1998 to 2000. She has been exhibition
chair, taking over from Joan Handel.
Sylvia was involved in art throughout her career at Carl
Sandberg College in Galesburg IL. She took art classes
at the Art Institute of Chicago. Upon moving to
Bloomington, IL she joined the Art League there and
had an exhibit at the local airport. At that time she was
painting in oil. Upon coming to FL, Sylvia took classes in
watercolor and was hooked. In fact she studied for 4
years with Soltan Szabo on Captiva.
Sylvia says “the FMBAA is a wonderful opportunity for
artists to take workshops, and to display their work in
shows and in the bins. You learn from seeing your work
on the wall with other work. You meet wonderful
people. For me the biggest opportunity is how have
been able to grow as an artist and a person.”

Paint the Beach….Again? Since its inception in 2010, Paint the Beach has grown into a successful national event that artists look forward to attending and from which our FMBAA treasury gains about $5000 each season, about a quarter of our operating budget. Aside from the first year, when Mimi co-chaired, I have chaired this event for six years. Meticulous notes, procedures, samples and files have been kept as we continuously improved the event to the well run festival it is today.
Now, it is time for me to step back and become only a member of the team. I am asking for someone to step up for 2016 to co-chair and learn the ropes, then take over the chairmanship the following year. This individual needs to be in place by January 6. At that time, if no one has stepped forward, the event will be cancelled for 2016. Please consider taking this position so that we can continue Paint the Beach. You will have the support of a fine committee as well as me.
