CANEGROWERS Burdekin Ltd Newsletter Edition 2016/49 Distributed: Thursday 22 December 2016

CANEGROWERS Burdekin

Directors & Staff Wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe &

Happy New Year

This is the final edition of canenews for 2016, the first edition for 2017 will be published

mid to late January

Office Closure

The Office of CANEGROWERS Burdekin

will be closed from midday

Friday 23rd December

reopening on Tuesday 3rd January

Christmas the season of hope

My hope list: After the long drawn out marketing mess …my hope is that growers

never have their rights challenged like this again and that the QSL On-

Supply Agreement and the Canegrowers Burdekin CSA are finalised

before the end of January and we can then all move forward with a

relationship of mutual respect and trust to rebuild confidence in the

cane industry

The State Government recognises that it is delusional to think that they

can have a strong economy whilst flogging Ergon as a cash cow and

change their policy so that Queensland can return to having the

cheapest electricity in Australia

The wet seasons return to normal

That Wilmar achieve and improve the performance of the Burdekin Mills

to availability levels that match grower's expectations

The forecast world deficit for raw sugar occurs with the result the price

remains around and above the $550 per tonne mark

Our Impacted Growers court case against Wilmar relating to the 2010

shortfall is resolved and growers are more than satisfied with the result

That alternate/rotational crops are established in the Burdekin that have

the potential to be exported and that provide genuine and profitable

opportunities to the benefit of growers

That all cane farmers in the Burdekin have a happy, safe and

prosperous 2017.

Merry Christmas

General Manager

Wilmar CEO asked to end impasse

The Leader of the Opposition Mr. Tim Nicholls and local MP and Agriculture Shadow Minister

Dale Last called on Mr. Kuok (CEO and Chairman of Wilmar) to show leadership and to

urgently intervene to resolve the long-standing impasse in the finalisation of cane supply and

on supply agreements. (Click here)

Mr. Nicholls and Mr. Last asked why the other six miller companies can negotiate an

agreement with QSL but not Wilmar and confirmed that the LNP has absolutely no intention of

backing down on amendments to the Qld Sugar Industry Act ....changes that were needed to

ensure growers had genuine choice in marketing.

Leader of the Opposition Tim Nicholls, Agriculture Shadow Minster Dale Last

and CANEGROWERS Burdekin Chair Phil Marano

CANEGROWERS Burdekin writes to Qld Labor MPs on Wilmar’s actions With the recent media coverage of the potential rise of alternate political parties, we have

taken the opportunity to write to every Qld Labor MP. We have pointed out to the Labor MPs

that Queensland cane farming families have the perception that the Labor Government is

supporting a foreign owned, for profit, company that is alleged to have been involved in the

destruction of rainforests and has been accused by Amnesty International of labour

exploitation. We pointed out that their constituents are concerned that Labor appears to be

giving preference to this company over them and that Labor appears to be support this

company in their efforts to strip farmers of their rights to continue to utilise an Australian

industry owned not for profit company.

We have asked the Queensland Government to support its constituents and to put pressure

on Wilmar to have all contracts (including the CANEGROWERS cane supply agreements and

the QSL On-Supply Agreement) signed urgently. This will provide relief from some of the

financial and mental stress that Wilmar has placed on growers. Click here to read letter.
