There is Christmas Market in almost each town in Slovakia before Christmas.

On 1st of December, Christmas tree lights up on Christmas Market

Four Sundays before Christmas Day begins Advent time, every Sunday people relight one of four candles on an advent wreath.

Pople bake Christmas cakes, gingerbread and bisquits. Decorate their houses and, of, course, buy som presents for their relatives and friends.

On Christmas Day we prepare a meal for Christmas dinner and do some last housework in the morning. In some families people are fasting until the dinner.

The Christmas Day is on 24th December.

The Christmas Dinner is very generous. As first meal, people eat Christmas wafers with honey

and nuts and cut an apple in two halfs. If the apple is

healthy,the family will be healthy, too.

The second dish is ,,opekance“ with nuts or poppy and sugar.

Then we serve a Christmas ,,kapustnica“ it is a soup from sauer-kraut, potatoes, dried mushrooms, plums, etc. It is Slovak national meal.

A main dish is a fried carp and traditional potato salad. On Christmas Eve we can not eat meat, only fish is allowed.

After Christmas dinner we give presents to each other under the Christmas Tree.

At midnight we attend a midnight mass.
