Scenic Design and Construction

The Sorcerers Apprentice

Designed and built for Illyria Theatre’s national outdoor Tour 2015. Directed by Oliver gray.Magic concepts by Paul Daniels.

Designing and building Illyria’s outdoor touring shows can be a lengthy process. The scenery needs to be large, bold and eye-catching to stand out from its outdoor surroundings, but it also must be strong, safe, weather proof, break apart and fit into one or two vans and be rebuilt every day for months on end. This makes the design process one of great compro-mise. Most types of scenery that could be built for indoor theatre simply won’t work out-doors due to the conditions. Wind being a major factor. The aim is finding the balance between what visually works for the production, with what is practical for this very spe-cific type of touring. All the sets are built upon a large framework of Steal deck staging.

These are some examples of the small touring sets and pieces of scenery I have designed and built. These include The Twits (Illyria) Iolanthi (Illyria) Robin Hood (Wizard theatre) The Wind in the Willows (Wizard Theatre) Strawberries and Steam (The Berry) Babe (Illyria) and Ali Baba (Wizard Thea-tre).

Sculpture and Painting

For one off sculptures I work with a lot of Polymer clays and wire armatures. Once the clays are dry or cured I often paint them with acrylics, using drybrushing, spray paint, and airbrushing techniques.

I often work with mixed media. My drawings fre-quently include a mix of pencil work, ink, watercol-

our, pastels, acrylics and copic markers .
