IRELAND AND TASMANIA – OUT OF IRELAND

Koch’s novel ‘Out of Ireland’ is loosely based on the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848, and

the subsequent experiences of the protagonists, including transportation to Van

Diemen’s Land. Although Koch has often warned against drawing too close an

association between the historical personages and the characters in the novel,

nonetheless the figures of Mitchel, Meagher, O’Brien, McManus, O’Donohue, Martin,

and O'Doherty remain seminal. The novel forms a diptych with ‘Highways to a War’

(winner of the 1996 Miles Franklin Award).

The following are a collection of Koch’s research and working copies for the writing of

‘Out Of Ireland’, plus some titles of general interest to Tasmanian history and culture.
