PROJECT: Waterfront Redevelopment

LOCATION:Zadar, Croatia

TYPE: Infrastructure // Urbanism

YEAR: 2013

Within the context of resilient tourism as a form of coastal rehabilitation transportation infrastructure as a form of regional planning holds the greatest potential for creating economic resiliency as well as the highest number of exter-nal benefits that can lead to regional rehabilitation. In the coastal town of Zadar, Croatia’s second largest infrastructure project is currently underway to create a new super-port in an attempt to stimulate economic development along the south-ern Dalmatian coast. With the new port currently under construction the harborside of the historic port surround-ing the peninsula becomes an opportunity for speculative de-velopment and reimagination. Through the insertion of tacti-cal floating elements along the existing harborside the old city can strategically invigorate its historic center while simulta-neously freeing up dry land for new speculative development. With a new floating infra-structure system the city can systematically deploy multiple temporary elements to ac-commodate seasonal influx in capacity and special events. Building on the country’s rich shipbuilding industry, the proj-ect harnesses the country’s di-rect relationship with the wa-ter and transportation as a way of revitalizing the urban core.

PROJECT: MIT FV Development_LabLOCATION:Cambridge, MATYPE: Institution // AcademicYEAR: 2012

Seeking to develop a new pro-gram between venture capital and applied academic research the MIT FV Development_Lab is a complex program housing venture capitalists, academic space, research & development laboratories, as well as start up ventures resulting from shared habitation. The project was largely derived from a series of studies on creating integrated building system tectonics. The primary modality for the project was to create a highly efficient and interconnected building prototype by combin-ing and leveraging multiple systems into highly efficient building strategies. When de-ployed on the site, the proj-ect mitigated several existing structures as well as unique building parameters to create a complex project that tested the limits of the system creating in a complex and highly resolved project.

PROJECT: Roxbury Terrace

LOCATION:Boston,MA

TYPE: Housing // Mixed Use

YEAR: 2011

Located along the Melnea Cass Corridor, Roxbury Terrace is a mixed use residential develop-ment in the heart of the rap-idly expanding Dudley Square neighborhood. Offering a mix of luxury and affordable units for singles and families, The project seeks to create afford-able high quality housing by limiting the square footage and creating units suited to match a variety of different lifestyles and occupants. In combination with a strong focus on leasable retail space on the lower floors Roxbury Terrace aims not only to help revitalize this burgeon-ing neighborhood but also be an economically prosperous proposal. PROJECT: Academy for the 20th Century

LOCATION:Rome, Italy

TYPE: Housing//Exibition//Academic

YEAR: 2009

Through a complex study of the site the project leverages several historical and formal layers resulting in a mitigated palimpsest. The major mor-phological generator for the project was referencing his-torical building types of Rome as well as designing a building that was inherently affected by the historical Aqua Clau-dia that ran through the site. The project included housing for scholars, meeting rooms, teaching spaces, work studios, exhibition halls, a library, and a museum. The unique program of the project then differentiat-ed the projects resulting parts resulting in a complex urban center that is simultaneously of the city as well as a new insertion into the urban fabric affected by time.

PROJECT: Hangzhou Super-Block

LOCATION:Hangzhou, China

TYPE: Mixed Use // Retail // Office

YEAR: 2010

COMPANY: KPF // Labtop

The Hangzhou (Baida) Mixed Use Super-block is a large de-velopment designed to provide an iconic structure in Hang-zhou’s new Central Business District. Containing a mixture of high-end retail, office, ho-tel, and residential programs the project is a landmark proj-ect for the region. The site is a conglomeration of several large blocks to create a large super-block capable of holding larger programs and amenities. While accommodating these new larger scale programs the project seeks to stand out from traditional bulky super-block typologies by creating numer-ous circulation routes through the site and maintaining the urban character of the exist-ing fabric. Through an inser-tion of “Urban Gateways”- tall vertical voids generated by the strategic “hinging” & “bridging” of programs and massing, the scheme is at once cohesive yet pouris and ultimately ac-cessible. The project was done in partnership with the Baida group, Greentown China Ltd., Labtop rendering.

PROJECT: Jiading Exhibition Center

LOCATION:Jiading, China

TYPE: Exhibition // Cultural

YEAR: 2011

COMPANY: ZEROLABOFFICE

Historically, Jiading a promi-nent ㆊ짹 watertown, relying on water for its farming, com-merce, and livelihood, is now fast becoming a hub of modern urban and industrial expansion within Shanghai and the ㆊ짹 region. The new Exhibition center seeks to not only help reflect on the past but become a new urban generator for fu-ture development. By inserting a series of floating volumes to define the various program-matic zones throughout the existing space the project cre-ates a series of focused and intimate spaces that work to-gether to create a continuous whole. The role of the water flowing through canal is then acted out by visitor as they flow through the open floor plan through the various inserted spatial volumes that reflect the programmatic objectives of the exhibition center. By lifting the programmatic delineation above the users head it creates a free and open plan, similar to an art gallery, allowing the visitor to follow the exhibit program at their own pace, creating a personal experience. Through the reintroduction the concept of water as a form of circulation it creates the vital link between the past, present, and future of Jiading, and that it plays a crucial role in all as-pects of Jiading’s future urban development.

PROJECT: Urban Incubator

LOCATION:Worcester,MA

TYPE: Civic // Academic

YEAR: 2010

As the city of Worcester begins to rethink and re-examine its urban core in an effort to fix the damage of extensive urban re-newal in the 1960’s, the Urban Incubator seeks to strategically bring together several distinct groups in one place to re en-vision the city and kick start it efforts towards prosperity. Through an extensive urban analysis of downtown Worces-ter a new masterplan was de-veloped to try reconnect the city with itself. A special site was selected right at the heart of the newly zoned innova-tion district to serve a starting point for the development. The program of the UI incorporated civic, academic, institutional, and exhibition spaces to devel-op a new urban hub to attract the creative class. The mor-phology of the project affected by the tension between the new and old city plans as the facade bends and curves as a mitigative strategy to recon-nect these two forces resulting in an dynamic exterior.
