This portfolio represents my learning through three years of industrial design training at the University of Houston. It is the culmination of long nights, balance, teamwork, friendship, failures, and successes.

Rise and Shine

When you wake up Repose wakes up too. It mimics the human condition; work and rest. With the lid up, a full, bright light is projected to work beneath. With the lid down it casts a warm ambient light.

The form is based on the negative space of a standard adjustable task lamp. The interaction is simple. Touch the metal circle to turn it on and open the hood to adjust the amount of light.

Solid steel rod. The rod acts as the on/off switch. The lamp is engaged by touching its cheek.

The opening allows the lamp to cast minimal ambient light when it’s closed.

When open, the lamp provides suffi cient light to work from. At 15” tall the lamp sits close to the height a standard lamp would be set to.

No need to worry about an accident. Venzo is equipped with a myriad of safety features including a tilt switch and a light indicating it is on and ready for use.

The blender was designed from the handle down. To fi nd the appropriate starting shape we tested various handles with people within our target age range.

From the Handle Down

The handle testing led to prototypes of the complete model. From their we created a wooden model that allowed us to better understand tactility and weight The wooden model was painted to look like a fi nal model with a silicone handle and painted metal body.

Safety Solution: Indicator Light

Venzo incorporates a safe light letting you know that it is on and can be engaged.

“When my wife was cleaning the hand blender blades with their right index fi nger, she suddenly touched the hidden switch and the blade removed some of her fi nger tissue and half of her nail that ended in skin graft surgery.

Safety Solution: Tilt Switch

62% surveyed worried about cleaning the blade. Research showed that touching a spinning blade will send a user to the emergency room. The tilt switch keeps the user from being able to cut themselves if they forget what a spinning blade can do.

Safety Solution: Cordless

Cords get in the way and can cause things to be knocked over or can be tripped on. Typical immersion blender cords leave the device toward the user.

Safety Solution: Remove Shaft to Clean

Cleaning the Venzo blender is issue. Just press the two release button and remove the shaft from the handle. A quick rinse under water and it’s ready for the next morning or an easy evening meal.

Prepare for the day by placing fragrance into your modern incense holder.

Why should incense be kept in a box when its colors and fragrances can be displayed in your home or offi ce?

To understand incense you have to burn it, touch it, taste it. After burning it I stared at it, smelled it, and tasted it. It occurred to me that incense can be pleasant without the need to burn it. Why not enjoy incense without the smoke. Display the colors and shapes - enjoy the smell.

Exploration

InspirationI found inspiration for form at the Museum of Fine Arts sculpture garden. Given the project material was steel I decided to treat it as if it were soft and pierceable. The running boy sculpture and the outdoor lights evoke these ideas. The sculpture by Carlos Cruz-Diaz was explored in displaying the long colorful incense sticks.

Mid-morning frustration causes tension. Turn that tension into light. For play or angry passion Emote lets the user express their emotions through creating light.

Bash it, bang it, throw it, catch it. Emote will respond by providing an ambient light you can use to pick it up and throw it again or just set it down to set a mellow mood.

Form & Components

Finding the parts to make the light work was a bit diffi cult. I took apart various items including a hit sensing bouncing ball and a home security window break sensor. Wiring the break window sensor into a puck style push LED allowed me to create a working prototype.

The mold was made using silicone. Initially I was going to use a rock I picked up on campus. However, I decided it would be better to form my own rock through cutting and sanding. Finding the parts to make the light work was a bit diffi cult. I took apart various items including a hit sensing bouncing ball and a home security window break sensor. Wiring the break window sensor into a puck style push LED allowed me to create a working prototype.

The mold was made using silicone. Initially I was going to use a rock I picked up on campus. However, I decided it would be better to formmy own rock through cutting and sanding. Here, I tested various insulating materials to understand which worked best for keeping food hot. In the end a secondary heat source provided the best heat retention.

Bags, wraps, and containers were looked at as possible solutions. In the end, a secondary heatable puck provided the best sustainable solution. This solutions allows the user to keep their current carrying device.

After ideation and testing I found that the optimal sustainable solution was to create an add-on product. This heatable puck allows the user to keep their food hot as it regulates the temperature in their food carrying device.

Heating Gills

Thinner material allows heat to escape and return back into the puck. Locking System

The locking system allows the pucks to be connected to one another generating more heat and provide a stable surface.

Biodegradable

The Fuego puck can be used thousands of time, again and again. If it ever needs to be replaced it can simply be placed into a backyard composting system.

PLA Bioplastic

Heat resistant up to 248 degrees Fahrenheit.

Injection Molded

The top and bottom are formed through injection molding. The

soy was/clay blend is then placed between the two pieces in solid

form. The fi nal piece is joined through sonic welding.

Biodegradeable

The Fuego puck can be used thou-sands of time, again and again. If

it ever needs to be replaced it can simply be placed into a backyard

composting system.
