The Psychopath's BiblePandemoniumMost people will be appalled by this book. Manywill ignore or dismiss it s message as too horrifyingeven to acknowledge. This is exactly what we want: itadvances th e Work. (Indeed, ifyou are one of the rarefew wh o do no t see i t thus, we congratulate yo u asyo u ar e probably already a Master and you are

already advancing th e Work.)We can state with confidence that most peoplewill be appalled (or worse) because we have alreadyseen it happen. We have noticed that quite a few ofth e brave souls who read through the original edition(which was titled The Toxick Magician), and thosewho helped "test drive" this greatly expanded version, have remarked that the first chapters seemed rathereasy to take-despite ou r dire warnings. Indeed, itseemed to them that these first chapters seemedrather light-hearted, even amusing. An d then, sometimes quite suddenly, they would remark thatthey felt something change within themselves, that itseemed that the tone of th e book itself changed an dthat they began to feel disturbed-sometimes verydisturbed. Whether it was the reader or th e bookitself that changed we leave for you to decide. You might even do this experiment for yourself:read the first five chapters or so. See if they seem"easy to take." Then keep reading an d see if you feela difference, perhaps a greater sense of dread an dmalevolence. If you do, go back an d reread those firstchapters again. Do they still seem as easy to take?

Many writers claim to be concerned with thelamentable condition of th e human species an d pur

port to present the means to bring man to a "higherstate" of consciousness or evolution or some such.Dr. Hyatt claims nothing of th e sort. Rather. thisbook is intended as .an instruction book for th epsychopath,2 the sort of person wh o cares nothingfor th e "advancement" of the species. 3Much has been written about the psychopath butvery little has been written for the psychopath.Perhaps the best-known is Niccol6 Machiavelli's ThePrince (1532), written for the political psychopath.(Indeed, at one time we considered titling this book

The New Prince: MachiaveW Revisited in homage toMachiavelli's work even though we personally despiseall those in an d around the political field. 4)Though (probably) no t written specifically for th epsychopath, Eric Hoffer's The True Believer: Thoughtson the Nature ofMass Movements (1951) is essentialreading for th e practitioner. We are aware of few other useful titles in the nonfiction arena-not in psychology or even in political"science"-except for a few books classified in th e2 For those who wonder about the difference between thetenus "psychopath" and "sociopath,'' please note that boththe dictionary and psychiatric definitions of the two wordsare now literally identical. This was not always so. Wespeculate that the merging of these two terms has beendone for the convenience of those in the psychiatric andcriminal justice systems so that they need only considerbehavior and not internal psychological factors.3 Though useful for aU psychopaths, this book is particu-larly written for the group of psychopaths we consider thebest and highest of all-in our tenus. We call them "ToxickMagicians." More about that later.4 At press time we saw an announcement of the release ofa book titled The New Prince (Renaissance Books, 1999) byDick Morris. It was described as a political book, perhapsintended to "update" the originaL

Pandemonium Th e Psychopath's Bible"salesmanship" category. Some of Robert J. R i n g e r ' ~ work, such as Winning Through Intimidation an dLooking Out For No. 1 (both reissued in 1993) ar eparticularly useful. (As Mr. Ringer so clearly pointsout, these ar e no t salesmanship books at all. Nonetheless, hardly anyone seems to believe him. To us ,this is an indication that Mr. Ringer is a greatmaster. One of th e axioms of life is this: even if youtell th e t ru th-perhaps because yo u tell th e t ru th -no one will believe you.]

Most commonly th e psychopath has been depicted in a positive wa y only in fiction-the popularity ofwhich emphasizes the moth-to-the-flame fascinationmost people have for th e breed. (Though we focusmainly on movies, if yo u like to read you might wantto keep in mind that many of th e movies wemention-here an d in the Appendix-were derivedfrom books. some good, some bad. Further someuseful books have not been made into movies at all;Ayn Rand's AtLas Shrugged. 1957 is an excellentexample.)You ca n find a few comedies (mostly among olderBritish films]; these include School fo r Scoundrels,1960 an d The Captain's Paradise, 1954). You ca nalso find a few comedy/dramas (notably The Sting.1973 an d Butch Cassidy an d the Sundance Kid.1969-which may be th e best-loved psychopathmovie ever made], However, most works which depictpsychopaths are straight dramas. Among these aresuch excellent movies as Point Break (in ou r view, one of the purest and best of it s kind] and the everpopular Silence of the Lambs.55 Silence o j the Lambs is an example of an excellent moviederived from an excellent book (Le., the book of the samename by Thomas Harris). In addition. the less well-known

WI' believe tha t probably th e most significantl j l l l l i l ly which makes many of these works so appealIII'-! I r Ihat the hero-psychopath is , at least to a large

Throughout history, throughout most of th eworld, real, live psychopaths have gotten a ba d rap. That is quite understandable since almost all of the

world's religious and social philosophies have littleus e for the individual except as a tool to be placed inservice to their notion of something else: "God," orthe "collective," or the "higher good," or some otherequally undefinable teFm. Only rarely, such as inZen, some aspects of Tibetan Buddhism an d Hindu-

story of Hannibal Lecter's earlier "activities," Red Dragon,1981 wa s also qUite good-as a book. Th e movie, however.wa s rather mediocre. As we go to press (1999), th e longawaited third book in th e Leeter series, Hannibal, ha s beenpublished. Speculation abounds whether a movie will bemade. I t seems clear that after many years, Lecter. hi sliver, fava beans an d Chianti are still treasured.)6 The conscious psychopath is often seen as the most"real" an d frequently th e most sympathetic character. Thisis certainly true for th e fictional psychopath. an d is alsotrue for th e real-life psychopath much more often thanmost people would like to admit.

The Psychopath's BiblePandemoniumism, an d some schools of Existentialism, is th e trulyautonomous individual considered primal. To most of th e world, anyone who holds himselfapart from the herd (especiaLly in the psychologicalsense) is, at least, highly suspect an d probably blasphemous, heretical an d criminal. (Almost every defi-nition of th e term psychopath includes th e word"criminal" as one of it s key characteristics.)

Who ar e held up to th e world as archetypalexamples of psychopaths? Almost without exceptionthey are of th e v i o ~ e n t criminal variety: "crazedloners," "terrorists," "spree killers," "mass murderers"an d "serial killers" are popular characterizationstoday.7 ("Satanists," "witches" and their ilk get a playfrom time to time bu t haven't really caught on.)People in the political an d propaganda (Le., news)businesses love examples of this kind: it gives them agolden opportunity to rabble-rouse an d pontificate.Frequently they will describe the actions of these"terrible people" as "incomprehensible." When motivations ar e considered at all, such people are usuallyseen as demented, clinically insane, sexually frustrated, politically fanatical or incompetent malcontents. Then comes th e litany of assertions of "explanations" for their behaVior-books, music, videogames, movies, the Internet (or an y relatively newtechnology), sa tanism, "society," etc. , etc. a dnauseam.

Historically, certain conquerors and political fig-ures (e.g., Hitler, Napoleon, Stalin) an d competitors7 Note that all of these categories ar e highly stylized an dserve to dehumanize the indiViduals about which theyspeak. This is a common-and important-methodologywhen referring to "enemies."

to "legitimate governments" (e.g., organized crimefigures such as Jesse James, Al Capone, JohnDillinger an d John GottiB) have been characterized aspsychopaths.ThiS focus on the Violent psychopath may bedramatic, bu t it is also rather narrow. In a sense, toisolate on figures such as these is like saying that"Christians" ar e typified by Torquemada and JimJones. (Come to think of it , there ar e millionsperhaps billions-of people on this planet who wouldagree with such a characterization of Christianity. Usincluded.)

In reality, there are many operating psychopathswho never reach the public eye. Some are neveridentified as such because they are so successful atwhat they do (Le., they don't get caught). Many moreare never characterized as psychopaths because theydo not exercise unacceptable criminal behaVior(remember, criminal behaVior-especially violentcriminal behavior-is usually considered one of th eessential defining characteristics of the psychopath)an d ar e thus considered acceptable, even valuable, members of society. Many businessmen, lawyers, doctors, an d politicians fall into this group. (I t ha soften been said that Al Capone would have been agreat success in the "legitimate" business world if heha d no t become involved in "criminal" activities. Thisshould come as no great surprise considering thatmany of th e businesses in which Capone an d othersof hi s time were engaged-for example, th e sale ofalcohol and other chemicals, gambling an d prostitut ion-were then, and ar e today, defined as "legiti-8 It seems interesting to us that many of these "criminals"were viewed as heroic figures by many of the people oftheir time.

Pandemonium The Psychopath's Biblemate" or "criminal" only by th e circumstances ofgeography.)

Considering the amount of focus that is expendedon the violent psychopath, i t appears interesting tous that there really seem to be very few operatingpsychopaths in these traditionally accepted "nut"group categories. For example, according to the FBI,there are probably no more than thirty-five "serialkillers" operating in th e U.S. at any given time.9Also, according to th e FBI, virtually all assertionsof th e existence of an y organized violent "Satanic"conspiracies have proven to be unfounded.Even more significant to us , however, is the rareoccurrence of relatively large-scale violent acts 10initiated by individuals or small groups: "terrorist"acts like the bombings of the World Trade Center inNew York an d th e Federal Building in OklahomaCity, "mass murders," airplane bombings, etc. seemto us rather rare (and often rather incompetentlycarried out), 11 Indeed, with all th e hype about th epower, determination, organization an d resources ofcertain "terrorist groups," it seems particularlystrange to us that no one has done something reaLLy9 Some academic sources claim as many as two hundredan d some claim that the number is rising. To be sure, much of th e research seems rather shoddy to us. In anycase, however. the whole thing seems like small potatoes,10 This statement, of course, deliberately excludes the perpetrators of reaLLy large-scale violence; i.e., governments.11 Each such incident, of course, receives an enormousamount of publicity and hand-wringing, but let's be honest: ad d it all up and there really haven't been that manyincidents worldwide throughout human history; moreover, the total number of people killed in all the incidents pu ttogether amounts to less than a pimple on the as s of an yminor league war. civil or otherwise.

    16

dramatic: for example, setting off a nuclear bomb inWashington, D.C. Are all these "psychopaths" reallyso incompetent?12I t is worthy noting that some people have suggested that, because we have written about the

Violent psychopath, we ar e somehow encouragingsuch behaVior. Nothing could be further f rom thetruth!! We wish to make it absolutely clear that we dono t condone the initiation of violence to achieve an yend, by anyone, at an y time, in any place, in an yway. For us, th e fundamental rule of interpersonalbehaVior is that it is absolutely unacceptable to initi-at e violence under any circumstances.

Not that that's out of the way, what does th eacademic world say about the psychopath? Here aresome "accepted" definitions.

From th e American Heritage Dictionary: Psychopath: "A person with an antisocial personality disor-der, especially one manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior." [Emphasis added]"Antisocial personality disorder" is a technicalterm in psychiatry which we will soon consider.

12 Some people feel that the rarity of such deeds suggests(or even proves!) the existence of some sort of worlawidepolitical/social conspiracy. Conspiracy theories appear toappeal to an d console th e human ego which longs formeaning an d purpose and hates to accept that most people really are incompetent.17

PandemoniumNote that al l of the other adjectives ar e normative:"aggressive" (as compared to passive and compliant?), an d "perverted, criminal, or amoral" which areall defined by what is "socially accepted. "1 3In th e U.S., The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

of Mental Disorders, (DSM-rvr M) 4t h Edition, America n Psychiatric Association, 1994 is th e "bible" ofpsychiatry.14 So, what does DSM-IVTM say about"antisocial personality disorder"? [Emphasis added.]

The essential feature of Antisocial PersonalityDisorder is a pervasive pattern of disregard for,an d violation of. the rights 15 of others thatbegins in childhood or early adolescence an dcontinues into adulthood. This pattern has also been referred to aspsychopathy, sociopathy, or dyssocial personality disorder Deceit an d manipulation ar ecentral features .... the individual must be at least age 18years and must have ha d a history of somesymptoms of Conduct Disorder before age 15

13 "Socially accepted," of course, is no t an "absolute"; italways refers to the mores at a particular time an d place. No doubt you would laugh (and run) if a medical doctorsaid, "According to the customs of this society, you havean infection in your finger." Bu t in psychiatry, this sort ofdiagnostic methodology is common an d accepted.14 I f you've never picked up DSM-JVTM, we strongly recommend that yo u do so. You'll find yourself in it. You'llfind your friends and associates in it . You'll find your family members in it. Indeed, you'llfind everyone in it. In otherwords, from the point of view of psychiatry, everyone ha s a"mental disorder." For psychiatry, there is no such thing asmental health, only degrees o jpathoLogy!15 Central as this is to the definition of psychopath. we areno t aware of an y definition of "rights" in DSM-IVTM.Nonetheless, the common understanding of th e termshould suffice.

Onlyysychopaths in training.7 Are we the only ones who find it weird that DSM-IVI'Muses the words "wishes" an d "feelings" in this sentencealong with "rights." Disregarding th e wishes or feelings ofothers is pathology!?18 Some might say that these are essential skills if one isto prosper or even survive in an insane world.

II I IntroductionNumerous professional editors (I.e., for hire) haverefused to assist in the editing of this book. I ask

myself why?Their answer is that by participating in the publi-cation of this book, they would be participating "indimming the light of civilization." What they reallymean is that they are horrified at the prospect ofexposing the inherent hypocrisy of most humanbehavior. What these professionals seem unable to consideris that th e light of civilization is the result of individ-uals who are capable of inventing light bulbs an dturning on the SWitches. Put another way, all that isbest is the result of the aristocracy of spirit whichfaces th e facts an d refuses to become confused bythe illusion of complexity.Like an y patient in need of an operation r askedmy surgeons (editors) to apply all their skill an dknowledge toward beautifying this project. Butinstead of a healthy excision here an d there theyhave concluded that this book is a cancer whichmust be cut out at all costs. What this means is thatthis book can't be beautified for it is itself the cure ofthe cancer which pays them.Of course, if I ha d labeled this book differentlyan d ha d been indirect in what I said there wouldhave been no problem. This, then, is th e first lessonof this book: never sa y exactly what you mean i f youwant the cooperation of the coward. No matter howpathetic, everyone is looking ou t for their best inter-ests. For most people their best interests consist ofno t being punished. Few play to win. They play to besafe while feeling morally superior to the winners.
