Dr. Chioma Ugochukwu, vice president for
academic affairs, spoke to a crowded room at
Central Exchange in Kansas City, on Thursday, April 28, as part of Cottey's Going Places
marketing outreach. Dr. Ugochukwu spoke
on "Navigating Cultural Sensitivity in the Workplace."
The workshop
explored strategies
for recognizing and
handling diversity
concerns and racial
tensions in the
workplace, to ensure
that individuals,
especially those
in supervisory
positions, are not
only aware of, but
are effectively
addressing those cultural landmines that end up harming others or causing
distractions and public relations nightmares.
This is the first of four leadership
sessions geared to professional
women that will be presented at
Central Exchange in Kansas City
as part of Cottey’s partnership
with the 1,100-member women’s professional development organization. In June,
Dr. Weitzel and Denise Hedges will present a session for mothers and daughters
titled “She Can Lead." This program will be focused on helping daughters become
leaders. Future sessions will be presented by Dr. Carol Clyde and Dr. Amanda Gilchrist. The series is titled Cottey College – Equip, Engage, Empower.

Kurpjuweit receives PTK Honor
Sarah Kurpjuweit was named to the 2016 Phi Theta Kappa All-Missouri Team and honored at a lunch award ceremony Wednesday, April 13. Sarah is captain of the cross-county team and is transferring to Central Methodist University for a degree in special education. Congratulations, Sarah!
The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce that the National Council for Alpha Chi Honor Society has voted to approve a chapter of Alpha Chi Society at Cottey College. Alpha Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies with a mission of promoting academic excellence and character among students in baccalaureate-granting institutions. We are delighted that our baccalaureate students now have an opportunity to be inducted into an academic honor society. As some of you already know, Cottey College has a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa for Associate students, so an honor society for baccalaureate students is a step in the right direction. One of the benefits for Cottey students is that membership in Alpha Chi gives them an opportunity to compete for the more than $60,000 available scholarships and fellowships awarded by Alpha Chi on the national level.
Dr. Oindrila Roy, assistant professor of international relations, has graciously accepted the responsibility of serving as the adviser to Cottey’s Alpha Chi chapter and has willingly assisted us with the charter application process, so our thanks goes out to her. We look forward to the next step, which is the installation ceremony for our chapter.
Student Happenings
Students Present at Anthropology Conference
Accompanied by Dr. Sarah Quick, assistant professor of anthropology and
sociology, two Cottey students attended the Central States Anthropological
Society's annual meeting in Kansas City from April 21-23 thanks to Serenbetz
Leadership Immersion Funds.
Ashley Solis presented "Unsigned: Musicians in the Age of Social Media" and Berenice Arroyo-Arellano presented her paper "Narcocorridos: The Truth Behind the Drug Ballads," and she also joined other senior scholars in a roundtable titled
"Immigration Issues in the Central States: What Anthropologists Can Do."
Pictured above: Presenters answer questions following their presentations. Pictured third from left is Ashley Solis; Pictured far right is Berenice Arroyo-Arellano.
English Capstone Presentations
Fourth-year English majors Abby Pino, Lauren Stephens, and Caitlin Lanzavecchia presented their capstone theses to the campus community on Wednesday, April 20, in the Missouri Recital Hall. English capstone students write a twenty- to thirty-page thesis under the guidance of two faculty members. The project allows students to analyze literature through the lens of women’s leadership, social responsibility, or global awareness. This year’s theses all focused on women writers, and the English faculty couldn’t be more proud of the work these students did. In case you missed the presentations, the projects are as follows:
• Abby Pino, “Identity, Culture, and Historical Trauma in American Indian Literature”
• Lauren Stephens, “A Cold Reading: A.S. Byatt, Constructing Binary Oppositions, and Subverting the Fairy Tale Canon”
• Caitlin Lanzavecchia, “The Struggle for a Feminist Fairy Tale: Anne Sexton’s Transformations Poems.”
Battle of the Bard
To commemorate Shakespeare’s birthday,
Sigma Kappa Delta and Delta Psi Omega faced off
in Cottey’s annual Battle of the Bard, a Shakespeare
knowledge competition. After a hard-fought—and
very animated--battle, SKD’s team, coached by
Dr. Kathy Pivak, pulled ahead to earn the win
over DPO, coached by Prof. Laura Chaney. Afterwards,
everyone sang happy birthday to Shakespeare and enjoyed a delicious cake. Check out “Cottey
College English Department” on Facebook for more pictures from the event.

Research has recently shown a link between standing and improved brain power. The study results suggest that switching to stand-biased desks in classrooms and offices could enhance cognitive function and memory.
