The Equalities Act 2010 uses a similar definition to describe

the Protected CharacteristicGender Reassignment


The Equalities Act 2010 uses the definition

‘… the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a

process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person’s

sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex.’


The Equalities Act 2010 states ‘A reference to a transsexual

person is a reference to a person who has the Protected Characteristic of

Gender Reassignment.’



Most LGB&T SocietiesStill include Transgender

Even though being transgender has nothing to do with sexuality


LGB&T Societies are often the first place a Transgender person discloses

their feelings about their gender Confusion

Since 2007 it has been necessary for Transgender to be included within

Equality and Diversity and for organisations to have a

Transgender Policy



Transsexual

A person confirmed as having GD in which there is strong and ongoing cross-gender identification and a desire to live and be accepted as a member

of the opposite gender. There is persistent discomfort with his or her anatomical sex and

sense of inappropriateness in the gender role of that sex.

(this is a medical diagnosis)


Transition Is the act of renewing a life from the birth

gender to the destination gender.

TransitioningIs the period of time it takes an individual

to work through the steps needed to transition from one gender to the other.

Every baby of every mammal begins potentially female.

During the second month of foetal development, hormones released

within the foetus determine whether the baby will remain female or become

male.


The process of developing into ‘male’ or ‘female’ is called Sex-differentiation.

These differences are programmed before birth, creating a sense of

‘Gender Identity’Or

‘Core Gender’

• The first thing a baby learns to recognise is gender.• A baby learns to identify those who are Mummy people from those who are Daddy people • A baby fits their perception of self into a gender very early in their development

Mum says I am a boy. But I know I am a girl


We expect that a baby with male genitaliaWill identify as a boy and later a man

andA baby with female genitalia

Will identify as a girl and later a woman.

WITH TRANSGENDER PEOPLETHIS IS NOT THE CASE!



It is only relatively recently that there has been significant

research into Gender Dysphoria

(which is the medical diagnosis)


Research In Holland in the early 1990’s showed that Transsexualism is a medical

condition, not a state of mind.

The brains of Male to Female Transsexuals were analysed and found to be more

similar to Female BrainsThan Male Brains


This research showed that the hypothalamus

Differs significantly in Male and Female brains


It is only by dissecting the Hypothalamus

That a definite diagnosis could be given for those who are Transsexual.

As this would have to be ‘post-mortem’

It is not a brilliant diagnostic tool.


Often Gender Variant childrenknow that they ‘do not fit’ into their

perceived gender from a very young age.


Sometimes it is the onset of puberty that is the catalyst that

causes the individual to question their core identity.


At the onset of puberty, young people may become confused

with issues around Gender and Sexual Orientation.

Our own statistics show that

90% of Transgender People are Suicide Survivors

Or have seriously contemplated suicide

We estimate one in 2,000 births have Gender Dysphoria

Our 3 Meeting Centres support approximately

50 people at any one time

Hate Crime


In 2012 Chrysalis was commissioned by

The Police Authority To conduct a survey about

Hate CrimeAgainst our Beneficiaries


The first obstacle was for our Beneficiaries to recognise and be aware of what

Hate Crime is

Some of our Beneficiaries believed thatOnly Transsexuals with a

Gender Recognition CertificateWere protected


The wording of The Equalities Act 2010

Ensures that those who are in the process of transitioning are protected against

Hate Crime


Chrysalis works with theHampshire Constabulary

To ensure that our Beneficiaries are confident enough to report any

Hate Crime

The LAGLO who has volunteered To be familiar with each group

Is a regular visitor andCan be contacted through the group

There have been several incidents that the LAGLO has been able to address

without resorting to prosecution.

This has enabled our beneficiaries to stay in their homes in safety.


Having a uniformed officer arrive on the doorstep of the perpetrator and tell

them that they have committed a criminal offence

Is a daunting experience.


Then the Officer will inform them that they are not being arrested, this time,

due to the generous nature of the victim.

This is often a better option than prosecution.


In each case the details of those who committed the Hate Crime are kept on file and any second offence will not be

treated so leniently.


Some Hate Crime is more serious and

prosecutions have been made.


One serious incident resulted in prison sentences for the perpetrators

and closure of the recreational venue involved


Hate Crime is serious and

Every effort must be made to record offences in the right category


Hate CrimeMust Not be recorded as

Anti-social behaviour or

Neighbourhood disputes
