Visitors are greeted by a low, curved wall at the entrance to the park. This wall has two roles - encircling a new public plaza and leading visitors into the park along an inscribed memorial wall. After learning about Chuck Brown from the memorial, the visitors will find outdoor instrumental drums that link the memorial to the existing playground.

Inspired by the Go-Go beat, the Chuck Brown Pavilion will offer history through interactive outdoor music. Scattered at the entrance plaza of the memorial, there will be colorful drums where visitors would be able to learn Chuck Brown’s history and interact with them. These custom-made drums will promote community gathering through acoustics.

With instruments ranging from varied cultural drums to xylophones and contemporary ‘Bongo’ drums, we envision a place where not only the ‘Go-Go’ culture is celebrated but the multicultural nature of the District is embraced and expressed.

As a place of musical expression, the Memorial is designed to acoustically accomodate multiple musical types including and string wind instruments without distrupting the surrounding community

In each of the designs, a sculptural element will conveys some part of Chuck Brown’s legacy, creating a landmark for the community and the DC metro area. Visitors will be able to read a chronological list of all songs that Chuck Brown wrote, either in the paving or park walls, depending on the design chosen. Bright color will be used to unify the new memorial area with the rest of the park. The color will be carried through with new paint for benches and light poles.

Each conceptual design incorporates rain gardens as a sustainable strategy to deal with potential flooding.

Rain gardens will not only manage stormwater and run-off, but they will also provide a beautiful, low-maintenance park feature for the community.
