I read a story recently about an English evangelist by the name of Ebenezer Wooten having just concluded a preaching service in the village square. The crowd had dispersed, and he was busily loading his equipment. A young man approached him and asked, "Mr. Wooten, what must I do to be saved?" Wooten simply answered in a rather unconcerned way, "It's too late!" The young man was startled and said, "Oh don't say that, sir!" But the evangelist said again, "It's too late!" Then, looking the young man in the eye, he continued, "You want to know what you must DO to be saved. I tell you it's too late now or any other time. The work of salvation is done, completed, finished! It was finished on the cross." Then he explained that our part is simply to acknowledge our sin and receive by faith the gift of forgiveness.
This month, Christians around the world will celebrate the most important event that has ever occurred since the beginning of creation. Resurrection Sunday, Easter, no doubt is what separates Christianity from every other religion in the world. No other religious leader has ever or will ever conquer the power of death. Jesus did! But truth is, every time Christians come together for worship, we celebrate the resurrection. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is the central theme that guides everything we do every time we meet together. Without the resurrection there would be no Christianity and no reason for us to meet every Sunday and Wednesday. I Corinthians 15:14 says, “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”
In many places around the world, Christians share this greeting with each other on Easter Sunday: “He is Risen…He is risen indeed!” Those words truly remind us of the joyous news we celebrate at Easter, that Jesus’ death was not the end of the story. He overcame death! Saying “He is risen!” to each other gives us the opportunity to spread the good news of Jesus. The resurrection of Christ gives us joy and hope for every day of the year.
“He is risen! He is risen indeed.”

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, for the Lord, not for men”. Colossians 3:23
The month of April this year brings a fairly significant milestone in my life, as I will be celebrating 40 years of employment with Eastman Chemical on the 23rd. I have lived to see so many changes throughout those years, but one of the greatest concerns a truth I learned very early on. I had developed a strong work ethic early in my life, but had grown very frustrated from oppressive work conditions stemming from supervision. About this time, I was also attending a seminary in Henderson, and one morning in chapel, the Lord spoke a powerful principle into my life through the verse above, which set me free from those conditions, and has been so faithful to me in years since. The Lord has, and always will be my boss. I do not work for a man or a company; those are instruments by which the Lord has chosen to provide for me, to challenge me, and to develop my character and integrity through the years. There have been a number of shaky employment moments due to economic conditions and bottom lines, but I’ve weathered each with the confidence and assurance that my “Boss” was going to take care of me and my family. He has blessed me with many great co-workers and some godly bosses along the way. There’s absolutely nothing special or extraordinary about me, and I’ll never understand his amazing grace in my life, but I know He is a God who honors His Word, and He is true to that Word when we strive to respond in obedience and seek to walk in His ways. I believe John 8:32 says it best, that when we know and apply His truth, it will set us free! I can’t remember that speaker’s name that morning, but I still thank God for using him to speak freedom into my life that day!
