Many years ago I entered this wonderful temple called the Bible. I entered at the portico of Genesis, walked down through the Old Testament art gallery where the pictures of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Isaac, Jacob, & Daniel hung on

the wall. I passed into the music room of Psalms, where the spirit swept the keyboard of nature & brought forth the dirge-like wail of the weeping prophet Jeremiah to the grand, impassioned strain of Isaiah, until it seemed that every reed & pipe in God’s great organ of nature responded to the tuneful harp of David, the sweet singer of Israel. I entered the chapel of Ecclesiastes, where the voice of the preacher was heard, & into the conservatory of Sharon, & the Lily of the Valley’s sweet scented spices filled & perfumed my life. I entered the business office of the Proverbs, then into the observatory room of the prophets, where I saw telescopes of various sizes, some pointing to far-off events, but all concentrated upon the bright & morning star which was to rise above the moonlit hills of Judea for our salvation.

I entered the audience room of the King of Kings, & caught a vision of His glory from the standpoint of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John; passed into the Acts of the Apostles, where the Holy Spirit was doing His work in the formation of the infant church, then into the correspondence room, where sat Paul, Peter, James, John, & Jude, penning their epistles. I stepped into the throne room of Revelation, where all towered into glittering peaks, & I got a vision of the King sitting upon His throne in all His glory, & I cried:

All hail the power of Jesus’ name. Let angels prostrate fall,

Bring forth the royal diadem And crown Him Lord of all!

MEMBERS & VISITORS Thank you for being here today. Your presence encourages us all.

Please take a moment to complete an attendance card from the pew in front of you.

On July 21, 1983, 288 construction workers were waiting for the sound of the gun that would mark the beginning of construction on a house in Palmer, Alaska.

They were going to be timed to see how fast they could build a house. They were encouraged by a crowd of 6,000 spectators and a country band. The record they set was incredible. In just 3 hours, 53 minutes, and 59.49 seconds the lucky couple, Rocky and Pat Weldon of Anchorage, stood on the steps of their brand new house. The two bedroom house cost $80,000.

To top things off, a furniture company then furnished the house in less than four minutes.

“Instant houses” are possible, but not instant homes. Homes take time to build.

They are not built out of brick and mortar, but out of love, hope, patience, and trust. There will be no band playing, no crowd of spectators to watch, not much fanfare. It takes perseverance and commitment. There is never a time when you can sit down and say, “It’s finished.” There is always need for consideration, tenderness, and thoughtfulness.

But there is a real joy that comes from the building. Seeing your children grow up into fine Christians is a great thrill. Watching your mate mature and grow is exciting. With love as the foundation and a Christian home as your goal—building can be one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Thank you for helping us as we

seek to edify each other in the way of

the Lord!

Born in the East, & clothed in oriental form & imagery, the Bible walks the ways of the world with familiar feet, & enters land after land to find its own

everywhere. It speaks in hundreds of languages to the heart of man. It comes into the palace to tell the monarch that he is a servant of the Most High & into the cottage to tell the peasant that he is a child of God. Children listen to its stories with wonder & delight, & wise men ponder them as parables of life. It has a word of peace for the time of peril, a word of comfort for the hour of darkness. Its oracles are repeated in the assembly of the people, & its councils are whispered into the ears of the lonely. The wise & the proud tremble at its warnings. But to the wounded & patient is has a mother’s voice. The wilderness & the solitary place have been made glad by it, & fires of the hearth have lighted the reading of its well-worn pages. It has woven itself into our deepest affections & colored our dearest dreams, so that love & friendship, sympathy & devotion, memory & hope, put on the beautiful garments of the treasured speech, breathing of frankincense & myrrh. Above the cradle & beside the grave its great words come to us uncalled. They fill our prayers with power larger than we know, & the beauty of them lingers in our ear long after the sermons they have adorned have been forgotten, They return to us swiftly from far away, like spring water breaking forth from the mountain beside a long-forgotten path. No man is poor or desolate who has this treasure for his own. When the landscape darkens & when the trembling pilgrim comes to the valley named the shadow, he is not afraid to enter. He takes the rod & staff of Scripture in his hand; he says to friends & comrades, “Goodbye, we shall meet again.” Comforted by that support he goes toward the lonely pass as one who climbs through the darkness into light.
