We can m ost happily report

that the Winter Camp Meeting

was a very joyous and pleasant

tim e for God's people. Once again

saints from different states and

countries were privileged to sit

together in heavenly places. It

w as a rewarding time for us all,

feasting on the Word of God and

being taught of His will and His

w ays. As we view the worldly

situation today, we see the lack of

interest that men have for spiri-

tual things. While worldly minds

are entangled with revelry and

the holiday, it is good to know

that God's people still love and

desire heavenly things. Although

the meeting was short, only last-

ing four days, it was very well

attended. We are most grateful

for the convenient weather the

Lord provided for us.

Pastor Roger Decker welcomed

all the saints to another cam p

meeting at God's Acres on

Wednesday, December 28, 2011,

at 7:00 p.m . He then asked one of

the m inisters to com e and open

the service with prayer. There

were two main services each day

beginning Thursday, one at 10:00

a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m . Each

day a prayer service was held at

8:30 a.m . Brother David Steg-

meier conducted a teaching

service on "The Christian Hom e"

each afternoon. The children also

enjoyed Bible School each after-

noon. A service for the young

people took place each evening

at 6:00.

We all were richly blessed as

the congregation sang the old

songs of Zion. Many o f these

hymns were written as the result

of some dear saints' trials or of

life's amazing experiences. As we

raised our voices in praise and

adoration to the Lord, those

sweet sounds rang throughout

the tabernacle. Some saints

jum ped, shouting the praises,

others walked the aisles, and

many others rejoiced as tears

rolled down their faces. The

songs o f Z ion are songs of free-

dom and deliverance from the

captivity of sin and of Babel's

bondage. As always, the choir's

singing as well as individual spe-

cials added tremendously to set-

ting the refreshing atmosphere

for the services.

It is alw ays good to see the

ministerial brethren in atten-

dance. Their presence on the

pulpit in support of the speaker

was uplifting. Each message was

anointed by the Holy Ghost and

brought conviction and enlight-

enment to hearts. The presence

of God's Spirit in the services is

vitally necessary, for without

Him all would be empty and use-

less. It has often been stated that

prayer is the key to a successful

meeting, which was true in this

case. Much prayer and seeking

God 's direction for the cam p

meeting was m ade in the previ-

ous weeks and during the cam p

meeting also.[continued on page 19]

"And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us

go up to the m ountain of the LO R D , and to the house of the

God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will

walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the

word of the LO R D from Jerusalem. "

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh andspirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Brother Roger L. Decker

The Work of Salvation

Today there is a need along theline of perfecting holiness. When Ispeak of holiness, I am speaking ofheart purity. Salvation changesman's spirit, and He becomes theabode of God's Spirit. The Bible letsus know that He calls us to holiness.First Thessalonians 4:7 says, "ForGod hath not called us unto un-cleanness, but unto holiness."

Before we were saved, no doubtevery one of us knew there werethings in our lives that we had torefrain from if we were going tocome to Jesus Christ, and thatknowledge increased after we weresaved. Up to that particular point,we knew that we could not do cer-tain things and that we had to getrid of some things if Christ was toabide in our lives.

Paul mentioned some promisesin 2 Corinthians, Chapter 6. We canread the call for people to come outfrom among heathen worship, the

worship of idols, and being un-equally yoked with unbelievers.Verses 17-18 read: "Wherefore comeout from among them, and be yeseparate, saith the Lord, and touchnot the unclean thing; and I willreceive you, And will be a Fatherunto you, and ye shall be my sonsand daughters, saith the LordAlmighty."

The phrase "Wherefore come outfrom among them" is very plain, andthe following verse says that Godwould be their God, but only on thegrounds of their taking Him forsuch. The condition for the promisesis that they would separate from theworks and the workers of iniquity. The Scriptures let us know that Godcould not dwell in them if they hadconcord with Belial or if they had aportion with the infidels. Those whowill have the promises of God ful-filled to them must come under theconditions of these promises. If theyare not separate or if they touch theunclean thing, God will not receive

them. Therefore, He said He wouldnot be their God and they could notbe His people.

When a person comes to theLord in repentance, confessing hissins, a perfect work of salvationtakes place. God's works are perfect. When one is saved, he is savedperfectly. If you come to Jesus Christand truly give up all sin, God's workis perfect. As far as God isconcerned, you are perfect.

In Ezekiel 36:25-28 the ProphetEzekiel said: "Then will I sprinkleclean water upon you, and ye shallbe clean: from all your filthiness,and from all your idols, will Icleanse you. A new heart also will Igive you, and a new spirit will I putwithin you: and I will take away thestony heart out of your flesh, and Iwill give you an heart of flesh. AndI will put my spirit within you, andcause you to walk in my statutes,and ye shall keep my judgments,and do them. And ye shall dwell inthe land that I gave to your fathers;

and ye shall be my people, and I willbe your God."

When you come to Jesus Christand repent, every sin that you haveever committed since you came tothe age of accountability will begone. God will wipe the slate clean,so to speak. You will receive a newheart and a new Spirit. You willreceive God's Spirit at the time ofconversion.

The clean water mentioned inthe Bible is the Word of God, notwater baptism. In Ephesians 5:26,speaking of the church, Paul wrote,"That he might sanctify and cleanse[us] it with the washing of water bythe word." We read in John 15:3,"Now ye are clean through the wordwhich I have spoken unto you." It isthe Word of God that cleanses you. When you come to Jesus Christ inold-time repentance, you come toHim because you believe His Word. You are saved when you believe HisWord, and it is His Word that savesyou. The work of salvation isperfect.

The Perfecting of the Saints

As we mature in our Christianwalk, a perfect work needs to bedone. God gives gifts to men toaccomplish this perfection. In Ephe-sians 4:11-12 Paul wrote to the Gen-tiles: "And he gave some, apostles;and some, prophets; and some, evangelists [not everyone is an evan-gelist, an apostle, or a prophet]; andsome, pastors and teachers; For theperfecting of the saints, for the workof the ministry, for the edifying [orbuilding up] of the body of Christ."

This perfecting work is not to bedone on the world. It is to be doneon the saints of God. After you aresaved, you need to be perfected. Wehave a great part to play in beingperfected. Ephesians 4:11 lets usknow that the work of the ministryis divine. Verse 8 says, "Whereforehe saith, When he ascended up onhigh, he led captivity captive, andgave gifts unto men."

The word perfecting, as it is usedin our Scripture text, means "com-

plete." God is still working on us,and we need to be completed. TheApostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians7:1 to "cleanse ourselves from allfilthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear ofGod."

Numbers 33:52-53 says: "Then yeshall drive out all the inhabitants ofthe land from before you, and de-stroy all their pictures, and destroyall their molten images, and quitepluck down all their high places[Moses was speaking to the childrenof God]: And ye shall dispossess theinhabitants of the land, and dwelltherein: for I have given you theland to possess it." Moses gave ex-plicit instructions about dividing theland by lot per family when theyhad crossed the Jordan River andentered Canaan land. With thoseinstructions came the warning that ifthey did not drive out the inhabit-ants of the land, they would have acostly price to pay, and God wouldhave become their enemy. Not allthe tribes followed the warnings thatGod gave to Moses; therefore, theypaid a terrible price and a loss thatmany people never recovered from.

Today we are under thedispensation of grace, yet we alsoneed to cleanse ourselves. Just as thechildren of Israel had to drive outthe inhabitants of the land, you andI have to drive certain things fromour lives. The Apostle Paul said, "Letus cleanse ourselves." God does thecleansing in salvation. However, after the soul is clean, we mustcleanse ourselves from some things.

Again, Numbers 33:53 reads,"And ye shall dispossess the inhabit-ants of the land, and dwell therein:for I have given you the land to pos-sess it." What do we see in thisverse? We see that it is in God<s planfor His people to have the best of theland. God wants you to have com-plete victory over the enemy. Goddoes not want you to dwell with theenemy, and He does not want theenemy to have any part of your life.God wants you to drive out theenemy, but some things are difficultto get rid of.

God wants you to have the best.Too many times people seem toforget where they were and whatGod has done for them. When Godputs a person on his feet and he nolonger has the trials he once had, hewill have a tendency to forget God.This is true of people of all times.

Avoiding Temptation

I want you to read the warningthat God had recorded in Deuteron-omy 6:10-12, which states: "And itshall be, when the LORD thy Godshall have brought thee into the landwhich he sware unto thy fathers, toAbraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, togive thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, [In otherwords, they did not have anythingto do with obtaining those goodthings. God gave these cities tothem. They were already there, so allthey had to do was drive out theinhabitants.] And houses full of allgood things, which thou filledst not,and wells digged, which thoudiggedst not, vineyards and olivetrees, which thou plantedst not;when thou shalt have eaten and befull; Then beware lest thou forgetthe LORD, which brought thee forthout of the land of Egypt, from thehouse of bondage."

You see, the good things that theLord blesses you with will give youa tendency to forget where Hebrought you from, and you willthink that you have been good allalong. In reality, we all were vilesinners at one time. Some individu-als are more vile than others, be-cause they have gone deeper in sinthan others, but we all were once inthe quagmire of sin. God has a sol-emn warning to those whom He hasrichly blessed.

Some individuals could hardlyrub two nickels together, so tospeak, when God saved them. Theydid not have any transportation, ahome, or a job. God blessed themand helped them to get a job, buy ahome, and buy an automobile todrive. The point is, it is very easy toforget God. What are some signs

Page 5: Church of God Tabernacle in Newark, Ohio I was glad when ...gospeltrumpeter.com/2012.February.pdffrom among heathen worship, the worship of idols, and being un-equally yoked with unbelievers

GospelTrumpeter.com • February 2012 5

that you are forgetting God? Youwill become lax about your churchattendance. God sent a solemnwarning: "Do not forget where Ihave brought you from."

Some people were involved inthings before they were saved thatcould have shortened their lives, such as alcohol. Alcohol carries withit a sentence of a lonely, afflicted life.It will drain you physically andfinancially. It is a destroyer ofhomes, of character, of personality, and of relationships. When you aresaved, you are cleansed from the sinof consuming alcohol. A cleansingwork takes place. You need to dosome perfecting. For example, youwill not go to barrooms. When I wasfirst saved, I thought I could go withmy buddy and not partake ofalcohol, but I soon found out thatwas not a good idea. What does theBible say? You must come out fromamong them. You should notfrequent any place that throws youinto temptation.

James 1:1-3 reads: "James, aservant of God and of the Lord JesusChrist, to the twelve tribes which arescattered abroad, greeting. Mybrethren, count it all joy when ye fallinto divers temptations; Knowingthis, that the trying of your faithworketh patience." I want you tonotice the wording of this text.James said to count it all joy whenyou fall into divers temptations. Youcannot have joy when you put your-self into temptation. What are youdoing? You are tempting God, andyou are going to fail of the grace ofGod.

If you are saved, you need tostay away from those who drink. Ifyour brothers, your sisters, or yourin-laws drink, you need to stayaway from them while they aredrinking. If they want to drink, letthem go with others who drink. Youshould not put yourself in the wayof temptation.

Keeping the Flesh Under

Second Samuel 11:1 reads, "Andit came to pass, after the year was

expired, at the time when kings goforth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and allIsrael; and they destroyed the chil-dren of Ammon, and besiegedRabbah. But David tarried still atJerusalem." This was the time ofyear when kings usually went forthto battle. Historians and commenta-tors stated that was in the spring ofthe year, weather permitting, whenthe ground was better.

Instead of King David going tobattle, he sent Joab, his right-handman and the captain of his army.Joab was a very wise warrior, andDavid tarried at Jerusalem.

There is a reason that the Biblesays "David tarried still at Jerusa-lem." When a person starts laggingbehind the call of duty, he putshimself in the way of temptation. Asa child of God, God has called youto labor for Him, so you ought to bedoing what He has called you to do.You should not lag behind. Davidlagged behind. He had been a king awhile. No doubt, he had gone out tobattle many times. Perhaps hethought, "Why should I go this time?Joab and the army seem to handleeverything fine."

The area where you are going tohave your biggest trouble is in keep-ing your own flesh under. You can-not blame others for your not beingspiritual. In the New Testament, youcan read of brethren who servedGod when they were in prison. What a snare it was when Davidsaw a beautiful woman bathing.Had David been where he shouldhave been, he never would haveseen her. He should not haveshirked the call of duty. There aretimes when each of us has to go tobattle, and we cannot send someoneelse to take our place.

Our Scripture text states,"Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse our-selves from all filthiness of the fleshand spirit, perfecting holiness in thefear of God." The word filthiness, asit is used in this verse of Scripture, means "a soiling, a defilement." Inother words, the Apostle Paul was

saying, "Let us cleanse ourselvesfrom all those things that will soil ordefile the flesh and spirit."

Paul started in 2 Corinthians,Chapter 6, by saying that we areworkers together with Christ. Whenhe got to verse 14, he let the Chris-tians know that they cannot worktogether for Christ when unbelieverswere joining in with them. In theseScriptures the Apostle Paul wasdealing with defilement. Nothingwill defile your spirit and your fleshmore than being unequally yokedtogether with unbelievers.

Sadly, too many people keepcompany with Babylon. The nextthing they know, they feel they areall right. The Word of God says inRevelation 18:4, "Come out of her,my people." You may not go to theirworship services, but if you continueto keep company with Babyloniansall the time, the next thing youknow, you are going to think: "Theyare all right. They believe the sameway I do," even though they do notadhere to the Bible standard.

The Seriousness of Marriage

Often I warn those who arecontemplating marriage, "You needto make sure that you get directionfrom God before you enter mar-riage." Some people change partnerslike they were in a square dance. They say, "Ah, there<s one!" and thenlater they say, "Oh! There<s one!"You must check to see how spiritualthat one is. Your eyes can deceiveyou. Your decision is one that youare going to have to live with, andthat is more difficult than sayingyour vows. Merely saying the mar-riage vows is the easy part. Theother part is living with the one youhave married. I will guarantee you, that one is on his or her bestbehavior while you are dating.

Today in many cases people donot take their marriage vowsseriously, and they are in a hurry toget the ceremony over. When acouple says the marriage vows, theysay, "For better, for worse." Here iswhere the trouble lies. Everyone

Page 6: Church of God Tabernacle in Newark, Ohio I was glad when ...gospeltrumpeter.com/2012.February.pdffrom among heathen worship, the worship of idols, and being un-equally yoked with unbelievers

6 GospelTrumpeter.com • February 2012

loves the "for better" part of thevows, but no one likes the part thatsays "for worse." The worst is whatcauses them to visit at the lawyer'soffice. Also, the vow says, "Forricher, for poorer." What are theysaying? "I will take you, honey, whether we have plenty in thechecking account or we are scratch-ing to make ends meet." Financescan fail and the loss of a job canoccur in a poor economy. When thathappens, couples should really pulltogether. Why? They are a team.Ecclesiastes 4:9 tells us that "two arebetter than one."

Next, the vows say, ". . . in sick-ness and in health." Your health canchange quickly. You may say, "I loveher so much." Would you still loveher if she were in a car accident andbecame horribly disfigured? Wouldyou still love her if she were immo-bile and you had to care for her? Shemight have to spend the rest of herlife on her back. Would you love herthen? How long do you have tokeep your vows? Till death do youpart. How long might you have toput up with sicknesses? Till deathdo you part. How long might youhave to put up with being poor? Tilldeath do you part.

You need to realize that youmay struggle financially, but if youkeep God first, keep tithing, keepobeying God, and keep putting Godfirst, God will be there to help you. That is not a time to be selfish. Whenhard times come, it is a time when acouple ought to ban together or theyare not going to make it through thehard times. You may say, "Well, I'lljust go my way." You may do that, but you will take your problemswith you.

Sicknesses will come, and healthwill fail, but where is the love?Where is the love that you said youhad when you repeated the vows? You said those vows when every-thing was in a perfect state. You saidthose vows when you were not eventhinking about sickness or finances.Heartaches will come in a marriage.Hurt feelings will arise. Thank God,Jesus< love went deeper than just

superficial love.I am preaching on perfecting

holiness. Holiness covers everyavenue of your life—your worship, your home, your work, your deal-ings with the world and with yourbrothers and sisters in the Lord. Noteverybody is going to like you. Youmay not be the most popular one onthe street. The husband may say ordo things that are hurtful to thewife. When he does, he needs toapologize and cleanse himself ofthat. The wife may say or do thingsthat are hurtful. When she does, sheneeds to do the same. You shouldnot bail out of your marriage be-cause the worst has come. Youshould not say, "That's enough forme," and then open the door andleave. You ought to try to supportthe marriage the best way you possi-bly can. Marriages need to beperfected.

Bringing Your BodyInto Subjection

Let us look at some of thewritings of the Apostle Paul. Again,Ephesians 4:11-12 states: "And hegave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; andsome, pastors and teachers; For theperfecting of the saints, for the workof the ministry, for the edifying [orthe building up] of the body ofChrist."

Colossians 3:5-9 reads: "Mortifytherefore your members which areupon the earth; fornication, unclean-ness, inordinate affection, evil con-cupiscence, and covetousness, whichis idolatry: For which things' sakethe wrath of God cometh on thechildren of disobedience: In thewhich ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now yealso put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communi-cation out of your mouth. Lie notone to another, seeing that ye haveput off the old man with his deeds."

Oftentimes there are somethings that people carry over fromthe life of sin. When you are saved, all sin is forgiven, but there are some

human flaws that you need tocleanse yourself from. When you aresaved, you are perfect. The soul iscleansed, but there are some thingsthat need to be cleansed by sittingunder the preaching of God's Word.

The Apostle Paul said in1 Corinthians 9:27, "But I keep undermy body, and bring it into sub-jection: lest that by any means, whenI have preached to others, I myselfshould be a castaway." What is acastaway? As it is used in this text ofScripture, it means that he might befound unworthy or that he mightbecome a reject. If you fail to make itinto Heaven, it will be because youfailed to keep your body under.

Let me give you examples of what might need to be cleansedin your life. Ephesians 4:26 states,"Be ye angry, and sin not: let not thesun go down upon your wrath."This Scripture lets you know thatone may be angry without sinning. On the other hand, there is a dangerthat your anger will be accompaniedwith sin. Anger can lead you intosin quickly. Many times angeraccompanies revenge.

The Apostle Paul said to "let notthe sun go down upon your wrath."The meaning of this verse is this: ifyou become angry, which may beunavoidable, see that the suddenexcitement does not cause you tocommit sin. Do not let your angeroverstep proper bounds. Do notcherish it and let it remain in yourmind even to the setting of the sun.Do not let anger cause you to dosomething that would embarrassyou or cause you to say or do thingsyou might regret.

Uncontrolled anger leads towrath. Now, you are a human being.Things will happen that you are notgoing to like, and you may findyourself getting angry. Nevertheless, you should not let your emotions getso uncontrollable that anger causesyou to sin. When Paul said "let notthe sun go down upon your wrath,"he was saying that you ought to getthat thing taken care of. Do not sleepon it at night. You should deal withit while it is still fresh in your mind.

Though the sun may be setting inthe west, let not the passion of angerlinger in your mind. Let the last raysof the setting sun find you in apeaceful calm. There are enoughthings that can cause you to be upsetor angry. You may lack income, youmay not feel well, your car maybreak down, or something else mayhappen to cause you to becomeangry.

"Make Not Provisionfor the Flesh"

What else could be somethingthat you need to cleanse from yourlife? Perhaps you throw tempertantrums when you do not get yourway. When you do not get yourway, maybe you belittle other peo-ple, maybe even your own parents.Do you verbally abuse others? Teen-agers need to be careful of how theytalk and treat their parents. Why?The Bible speaks against not treatingyour parents right. Ephesians 6:2-3says: "Honour thy father andmother; (which is the first com-mandment with promise;) That itmay be well with thee, and thoumayest live long on the earth."

Before you were saved, youcould have acquired some habitsthat you need to change. The Chris-tian life is a new life, but you have tobring your body under, because itwants its own way. It does not wantto be held in restraint. It does notwant to be told that it has to followthe Law of God.

In Romans 13:14 Paul wrote,"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh,to fulfil the lusts thereof." Romans8:13 says, "For if ye live after theflesh, ye shall die: but if ye throughthe Spirit do mortify the deeds of thebody, ye shall live." How can youkeep the flesh under? You must do itthrough the Spirit of God.

Your flesh does not want to goto church. It will search for everykind of excuse there is to start miss-ing the services. First, it will start outlike it is legitimate. Next, only aslight headache will be an excuse to

keep you from attending. Dear one,if you ever see the inside of Heaven, you must bring the flesh under, andyou have to go to the house of God.Now, a person who is really ill doesnot belong in the services. Neverthe-less, we each have a flesh that wehave to deal with.

Brother Emerson Wilson told thestory once of an individual who, prior to being saved, used to cussand swear. Not long after he wassaved, something happened and helet out an oath. Oh, how horrible hefelt! He went to Brother Wilson andtold him what had happened. Hewas feeling really bad, and BrotherWilson said, "Well, did you meditateon it before you said it?"

He said, "No, it just came out." Itwas an old habit that he had. Godhelped him, and he got victory overit.

If God saves you from smokingcigarettes, you should not keepcigarettes around. Do not keep themhandy for when you are discour-aged or depressed or nervous. Youmust get rid of them. If you havetrouble with drinking alcohol, youneed to clear it out of the house. Youshould not keep things around thatwill take you back into sin.

Before you were saved, maybeyou had a smart aleck mouth onyou. Some people always havesomething smart alecky to say. Theyalways make a joke or somethingnasty out of things that are said. Now that you are saved, you wantto watch that you do not get entan-gled in that. Opportunity will surelypresent itself. If you are not careful, you are going to slip and feel con-demned. You need to cleanseyourself of that habit. You need tocleanse yourself if you give curtanswers to people.

Press Toward the Mark

You must take time to be holyand perfect holiness. Paul said tomortify your members. When aperson starts to get weak spiritually, the flesh begins to take advantage. The more you give in to it, the more

it wants. Young person, if you aredating, you need to be careful, be-cause the flesh is never satisfied. Theflesh will draw you into a parkedcar or into a home when no one isthere. The next thing you know, youwill overstep godly principles. Childof God, you do not have it made. There is work to be done.

Philippians 3:12-15 states: "Notas though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but Ifollow after, if that I may apprehendthat for which also I am appre-hended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, Icount not myself to have appre-hended: but this one thing I do,forgetting those things which arebehind, and reaching forth untothose things which are before, Ipress [or Jesus said 'strive'] towardthe mark for the prize of the highcalling of God in Christ Jesus. Let ustherefore, as many as be perfect, bethus minded: and if in any thing yebe otherwise minded, God shallreveal even this unto you."

Going back to our Scripture textin verse 1, we read that Paul said"Let us cleanse ourselves." God willbe faithful. He will show you whereyour problem is. He will show youwhat you cannot do and what youneed to drive out of your life. TheLord wants you to get rid of any-thing that will be detrimental to youand will defile you. Such things willsoil your spirit. God will help driveit out and bring it under control, butyou have to put forth some effort.

Some things from the old lifemay be difficult to drive out. That isthe reason God told Moses to tell thepeople to drive out the inhabitantsof the land. Not all the tribes didthat. Some of them made allegianceswith the enemy. When they did that, they went into idolatry and othersinful things. Had they listened toGod, surely they would have hadthe victory. You can perfect your lifethrough the blood of Jesus Christ.A perfecting work needs to be doneas you journey the highway ofholiness.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamedof the gospel of Christ: for it is the powerof God unto salvation to every one thatbelieveth; to the Jew first, and also to theGreek.

17 For therein is the righteousnessof God revealed from faith to faith: as itis written, The just shall live by faith.

18 For the wrath of God is revealedfrom heaven against all ungodliness and

unrighteousness of men, who hold thetruth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may beknown of God is manifest in them; forGod hath showed it unto them.

Having Faith in God

God is making us ready to bethe greatest witnesses that we can behere on this earth. He makes us rightin His sight. When we placed ourfaith and trust in Christ to save us,this was accomplished from start tofinish. We can never bypass faith.Faith will accompany us throughoutlife, from the time we get saved tothe very end. It is a life of faith. Asthe Scripture says, if a man finds life,he will find it through trusting God.

We are living in a time of greatchange and much uncertainty. Peo-ple are failing, institutions are fail-ing, and many people in leadershippositions are failing. We need tohold to something that will neverchange, and that is God and HisWord. Everything around us except

God is changing. We need to get afirmer grip on the hand of God. Ithink of the old song, "Abide WithMe." One verse says, "Swift to itsclose ebbs out life's little day; Earth'sjoys grow dim, its glories pass away;Change and decay in all around I see—O Thou who changest not, abide withme."

Much is said in the Word of Godabout faith. Jesus healed the twoblind men, and in Matthew 9:29 Hesaid to them, "According to yourfaith be it unto you." This principleis still true today. I want my faith togrow, don't you? Jesus asked inverse 28, "Believe ye that I am ableto do this?" They replied, "Yea,Lord," and God healed them.

We often hear the adage, "Seeingis believing," but according to God'sphilosophy and His Word, believing

is seeing. God wants us to take Himat His Word and believe in Himbecause He is God.

Jesus spoke the following wordsto the disciples when they had triedin vain to deliver a certain man's sonwho was a lunatic. Matthew 17:20says, "Because of your unbelief: forverily I say unto you, If ye have faithas a grain of mustard seed, ye shallsay unto this mountain, Removehence to yonder place; and it shallremove; and nothing shall beimpossible unto you." From start tofinish, our lives as Christians arelived according to faith in God andobedience to His Eternal Word.

In Luke 7:50 Jesus said of thewoman who brought an alabasterbox of ointment and washed his feet,"Thy faith hath saved thee; go inpeace." Faith is very important, and

it is something that we need to takevery seriously.

In Luke, Chapter 8, you canread about Jesus being in anothersituation. The disciples were on alake, turbulent waves were beatingaround them, and the boat wasbeing inundated with water. Inverse 24 they cried out to Christ,"Master, master, we perish." Jesusdid save them, but what did He askthem in verse 25? He said, "Where isyour faith?" Faith must have an ob-ject. We have the Word, and wehave God. Why should anyonedoubt? Yet sometimes people do.

"Faith Is Believing"

The Apostle Paul wrote thirteenletters to the newly establishedcongregations in the New Testa-ment, and in those letters he usedthe words "faith" or "believe" morethan two hundred times. If you be-lieve, you will put actions to yourbelief. If you have faith, you willrespond to what you desire to knowand what you want to obtain. If youwant healing, you must put fortheffort. If you want to understand theWord of God, you must put fortheffort.

Hebrews 11:4-5 states: "By faithAbel offered unto God a moreexcellent sacrifice than Cain. . . .By faith Enoch was translated[why?] . . . he pleased God."Hebrews 11:7 and 11 reads: "By faithNoah . . . moved with fear. . . .Through faith also Sarah . . . judgedhim faithful who had promised."These are action words. In our walksof life, people demonstrate faith inmany things, visible and invisible, yet they say, "Show me!" We canshow them in the Word, but Godwants them to believe and then theywill see.

Throughout the annals of time, men of science have demonstratedtheir faith. They have often re-sponded to certain hypotheses anddiscovered scientific truths. ThomasEdison tried many times to discoverwhat he was looking for. Someonesaid to him, "You've tried two

hundred ways and haven't foundwhat you wanted."

He said, "I have found twohundred ways that do not work."

Thomas Edison was learningsomething. Scientists have soughtanswers to their questions throughfaith. They had faith that their re-search would someday discover atruth. Mr. Webster's definition ofhypothesis is "an interpretation of apractical situation or condition takenas the ground for action."

The word faith means "trust." Ifyou have faith in someone, you trustthat person. Faith brings action in allwalks of life, and man demonstratesfaith in things tangible and intangi-ble. Luke said in Acts 6:8, "And Ste-phen, full of faith and power, didgreat wonders and miracles amongthe people." Stephen, who was thefirst martyr, gave up his life forChrist. He was stoned to death.

Several times in the Word ofGod, we find the words, "The justshall live by faith." In three places inthe New Testament, the writers bor-rowed the words of Habakkuk 2:4,which says, "The just shall live byhis faith."

We sing the song "Faith IsBelieving" by Daniel O. Teasley. Itreads:

Faith is believing, the promise is true,Trusting in Jesus your strength to

renew;Resting so sweetly, secure on His

word,Shielded from danger with Jesus the

Lord.

Faith is believing, why longer remainUnder the bondage of Satan's domain? See, though all blood-stained, the

banner unfurled—Faith is the vict'ry that conquers the

world.

Faith is believing, the soul's happyrest,

Faith is believing, though sorely oppressed;

Singing in triumph whatever assail,High on the mountain or low in the

vale.

Faith is believing, then doubt him nomore,

Sell all your sorrows, your troublesgive o'er;

Soar in the sunlight above every cloud,Triumph forever, believing in God.

Faith is believing, simply receivingWhat in His promise God has revealed; Trust Him forever, doubt Him, no,

never,Till thy petition His Spirit hath sealed.

Someone told me about anincident that happened when he wassick. His grandson walked up to himand said, "I want to pray for you."So they prayed for his grandfather, and after they had finished praying,he said, "Grandpa, you're well." Thatis an example of childlike faith. Sa-tan wants to keep you under a spiritof fear, doubt, and unbelief. Youneed to get above these hindrancesto faith.

Cultivate Your Faith

I want to show the world that Ihave something that can help themin every situation of life. It is some-thing that they need. In Matthew21:21 Jesus said, "If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only dothis which is done to the fig tree, butalso if ye shall say unto this moun-tain, Be thou removed, and be thoucast into the sea; it shall be done."

Faith is like a mustard seed, butit must be planted. When faith isplanted in your heart at conversion,it begins to germinate. The seed offaith is alive, but it has to be sown. When you get saved, that seed issown. As it takes root, it begins togrow in your heart and life. As youwalk with God, however, this plantneeds to be cultivated, otherwiseweeds will come in and destroy it.You must cultivate your faith byreading the Word of God. Do youwant to grow in faith? Then youmust read the Bible.

I remember Brother EmersonWilson saying: "Don't listen to thesad, sob stories of people who havefailed. Don't listen to bad reports.

Page 10: Church of God Tabernacle in Newark, Ohio I was glad when ...gospeltrumpeter.com/2012.February.pdffrom among heathen worship, the worship of idols, and being un-equally yoked with unbelievers

Listen to God." Your plant of faith inyour heart must be watered by theWord, prayer, and continual com-muning with God. If you will dothat, your faith will grow. If youhave faith, you will act upon it andrespond to God. You need to have akeen ear to the Spirit. In otherwords, you need to be sensitive tothe Spirit of God. Some people arevery insensitive to God.

When I was a child, I loved toride horses. Some horses need littlereining to control them. Others needstronger measures to get them tocomply. As God's people, we needto conform easily to what Godwants us to do. Often He speaksgently: "Be careful. You are gettingjust a little too close" or "You aregetting just a little too silly" or "Youneed to work on this." If you feel thepreacher is talking to you, youshould not react with a bad attitude;you just need to take care of it.

Sinner friend, if you have faithin God's Word, you can be saved. You need to accept the invitationChrist gave in Matthew 11:28, whichstates, "Come unto me, all ye thatlabour and are heavy laden, and Iwill give you rest."

We read in Romans 10:17, "Sothen faith cometh by hearing, andhearing by the word of God." TheWord of God generates faith. Thewriter was quoting Isaiah 53:1a,which asks, "Who hath believed ourreport?" Not many people in theworld believe this report, but by thegrace of God, I am going to be onewho does believe it. Some people areso affected by others. What they dois contingent upon what theirfriends, their relatives, or their in-laws do. You ought to do what Godwants you to do. Each of us eitherstands or falls before God. What youdo is between you and God.

The inference in Romans 10:17 isthat faith comes from the messagethat is preached. When individualshear the messages about Christ andwhat He can do coming from theWord of God, faith is generated andan action is performed or carriedout. The promises are not just for a

certain people; they are for every-one. Not everyone who hears theWord of God believes it. Those whohear and truly believe the Word ofGod obey it. God gives faith, and theBible is the instrument by whichfaith comes. It is one instrument thatGod uses. Your spiritual progress, your spiritual strength, and yourfaith come by hearing the Wordof God. You should not doubt God.Doubting God is a terrible tragedy;it is the worst tragedy of alltragedies.

Faith That Pleases God

James wrote in James 1:6-7: "Butlet him ask in faith, nothing waver-ing. For he that wavereth is like awave of the sea driven with thewind and tossed. For let not thatman think that he shall receive anything of the Lord." Many peoplediscuss their doubts and their mis-givings more than they discuss theWord of God. They may say: "I don'tknow if the Lord is going to heal me.John died with what I have. I wasprayed for three or four times, and Istill have it."

Some people keep discussingtheir doubts, their misgivings, andtheir fears. Consequently, theirdoubts grow greater and their faithwains. You can become like doubt-ing Thomas if you are not careful.Thomas said in John 20:25, "Except Ishall see in his hands the print of thenails, and put my finger into theprint of the nails, and thrust myhand into his side, I will not be-lieve."

Jesus told him, "Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hastbelieved: blessed are they that havenot seen, and yet have believed."Thomas wanted some evidence thathe could see and touch. He wantedsomething tangible. Today a lot ofpeople are like Thomas. Until he hadsomething tangible confirming theresurrection of Christ, he would notbelieve. He thought he had to see orfeel something. Often we believe inthings that we cannot see or touch. We cannot see or feel gravity, but

we can see and feel the effects of it.We know that we should not climbup on a building and jump off be-cause of the law called gravity. InJohn 3:8 Jesus compared salvation tothe wind. We cannot see the wind, but we can see its effects.

Thomas's faith was based onsight. That is not the kind of faiththat pleases the Lord. When thedevil gets you to magnify yourdoubts, he will rob you of manybenefits that you can receive in serv-ing God. There may be blessingsthat you have not received becauseunbelief is troubling you. You needto work to overcome doubts bygetting into the Word.

Some people live and actaccording to their feelings and theirimpulses. We have anxieties overtemporal things and needs of thebody, but Jesus said not to be of adoubtful mind. He will supply thosethings if you will seek first the King-dom of God. Many people placegreat importance on their clothingand their food, but in Matthew 6:28bJesus said, "Consider the lilies of thefield, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin." In otherwords, He was saying: "Look at howI blessed the lilies. Don't you think Iwill take care of your clothing andthose things? Seek first the kingdomof God." You may say: "I'm worriedabout my clothing and my food. What is going to happen in thefuture?"

I thought of a book that mychildren used to read called, WorryWalrus. He never wanted to doanything. He did not want to go outof the house because he thought hemight fall and break his neck. Hedid not want to go to the dinnertable because he thought he mightfind something in his food. He wor-ried about everything that he wassupposed to do, so he would not doanything. He just sat there. Somepeople are like that walrus.

You ought to spend your timeand strength in furthering the causeof Christ. You must put Him first. Ifpeople would live more simply, Ibelieve they would be happier.

Many people live for food, clothing, and pleasure rather than seekingfirst the Kingdom of God. Too manythings bog them down.

Keep Your Eyes on the Lord

In Matthew 14:31 Jesus said toPeter, "O thou of little faith, where-fore didst thou doubt?" In the pre-vious verse you can read that hewalked on the water to go to Jesus.Verse 30 tells us, "But when he sawthe wind boisterous, he was afraid;and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me." Peter waswalking on water to the Lord, but hebegan to sink. What happened?Peter took his eyes off the Lord andbegan to doubt. We should never dothat. We must keep our eyes on theLord. As long as Peter kept his eyeson the Lord, he was able to do theimpossible.

Whenever the disciples demon-strated a lack of faith, Jesus did notrebuke them harshly, but he waskind to them. Living a life of holi-ness is humanly impossible. WithGod it is possible to live without sin.You may say, "It's impossible!" Well,Peter did the impossible. If you keepyour eyes on Christ, you can live aholy life.

Living a holy life is like walkingon water. The only way we can livethis kind of life is to look to Jesus.Peter wrote in 1 Peter 2:21-22: "Foreven hereunto were ye called: be-cause Christ also suffered for us,leaving us an example, that yeshould follow his steps: Who did nosin, neither was guile found in hismouth."

Doubt and unbelief will cancelyour rights to many blessings andcause you to forfeit many things thatyou could receive. If people show nointerest in their need for salvationand that which pertains to theirsouls, it is undoubtably because theyare tainted and plagued by unbelief.Undoubtably, unbelief could be thegreatest hindrance to the progress ofthe church. We need to do what wecan to bolster our faith.

Jesus said in Matthew 3:58, "And

he did not many mighty works there[in His own community] because oftheir unbelief." Faith in God canmake mounds of difficulty com-pletely disappear. In this day weneed a revival of faith. Faith in Godwill bring full salvation to the souland healing to the body. It will dothat which man cannot do. God hasafforded a complete plan for Hispeople. The greatest, most substan-tial evidence of the existence of Godand His will for our lives is con-tained in the Bible. We should notseek further evidence than the Wordof God.

I believe in divine healing, but attimes you may need medical help tobe repaired. You may suffer a bro-ken bone or a broken tooth. Some-one may have a gaping wound inthe flesh. Your wife might havesome problems in childbirth. God isnot an unreasonable God.

Jesus said in Matthew 21:21,"Verily I say unto you, If ye havefaith, and doubt not, ye shall notonly do this which is done to the figtree, but also if ye shall say unto thismountain, Be thou removed, and bethou cast into the sea; it shall bedone."

I do not believe there is anunqualified promise. There areprincipals in the Word of God thatwe must look at and apply to eachsituation. Faith will accomplishgreat things for God. If you lackfaith, you need to look at yourselfand ask God to help you. We need arevival of divine healing in thechurch. Divine healing is what I calla "calling card" of the early churchand the sixth-seal church.

Exercising Faith

Jesus said His disciples wouldtake up deadly things and drinkthem, speak with new tongues, castout devils, and lay their hands onthe sick and they would recover.God has done these things, and Hecontinues to do them. I want to dogreater things for the Lord. Isaiah53:4-5 speaks of God including boththe soul and the body. The healing

of the body and the salvation of thesoul are included in the redemptiveplan of God. Matthew 8:17 says,"Himself took our infirmities, andbare our sicknesses." If Jesus hasborne our sins upon Himself anddelivered us from them, can we notexpect the same with our diseasesand afflictions? If He can take awayour sins, can He not take away ourillnesses?

Matthew 8:17 in The AmplifiedBible says, "He Himself took (in or-der to carry away) our weaknessesand infirmities and bore away ourdiseases." You do not have to goaround with a sick body. If Christcarried away and bore our diseases, why should you continue carryingthem? The real secret to faith is tohear, to believe, and then to act. Allpower is given to Christ. He is allpowerful.

In Matthew 28:18 Jesus said, "Allpower is given unto me in heavenand in earth." Colossians 2:15 says,"And having spoiled principalitiesand powers, he made a show ofthem openly, triumphing over themin it." Satan has no control or influ-ence over your life; he is a defeatedfoe.

Again, one songwriter wrote"Faith is believing, why longer remainUnder the bondage of Satan's domain?"Child of God, you need to learn theprivileges, because they are for you. They are God-inspired, and Hispromises are true. The Word of Godis the surest thing in the universe.Any promise of God is a certainfulfillment as if it had already takenplace.

The Amplified Bible tells us inHebrews 6:16-18: "Men indeedsware by a greater [than them-selves], and with them in alldisputes the oath taken for confir-mation is final—ending strife.Accordingly God also, in His desireto show more convincingly andbeyond doubt, to those who were toinherit the promise, the unchange-ableness of His purpose and plan, intervened (mediated) with an oath. This was so that by two unchange-able things [His promise and His

oath], in which it is impossible forGod ever to prove false or deceiveus, we who have fled [to Him] forrefuge might have mighty, indwell-ing strength and strong encourage-ment to grasp and hold fast the hopeappointed for us and set before [us]."

God has given us His promiseand His oath, and they will notchange. Numbers 23:19 reads, "Godis not a man, that he should lie; nei-ther the son of man, that he shouldrepent: hath he said, and shall he notdo it? or hath he spoken, and shallhe not make it good?"

Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 1:12"Thou hast well seen: for I will has-ten my word to perform it." TheAmplified Bible says, "You have seenwell, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to performit." King Solomon said in 1 Kings8:56, "Blessed be the Lord, that hathgiven rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised:there hath not failed one word of allhis good promise, which he prom-ised by the hand of Moses hisservant."

The fear of what might happenhinders faith. Fear is fed by what we

see, what we hear, and what youfeel. Fear refuses to stand on theWord of God. John wrote in 1 John4:18, "There is no fear in love; butperfect love casteth out fear: becausefear hath torment. He that feareth isnot made perfect in love."

You should exercise faith in allareas of your life. The Apostles saidto Jesus in Luke 17:5, "Increase ourfaith." We need to ask God to in-crease our faith. Someone may say,"Well, I don't merit salvation." Salva-tion is not based on merit. God givesit to you. Paul said in Ephesians 2:8,"For by grace are ye saved throughfaith; and that not of yourselves: it isthe gift of God." You do not have tostruggle to become worthy; God hasmade you worthy. He is looking forfaith that works by love. James 5:15says, "And the prayer of faith shallsave the sick, and the Lord shallraise him up." God is looking forpeople who are working and doingthe things that He wants them to do.Charles Spurgeon was a great manof God. One day he went to visit afarmer in his congregation, and henoticed the farmer had written onhis windmill, "God is love." So Mr.

Spurgeon said to this farmer: "Doyou mean that you watch the wind-mill, and God is only love when thewindmill turns a certain way andproduces water? Do you only decidethat God is love when favorablethings happen? Do you mean thatyour faith is dependent upon thedirection the wind is blowing?"

"No," the farmer retorted, "Imean that regardless of which waythe wind blows, God is still love."

Regardless of what happens tous, we should rely on the goodness, the faithfulness, and the wisdom ofGod. Our will should be that God isin control of everything, that He isthe planner. When we are living byfaith, we commit everything aboutour lives to His will—everything. Iwant to be successful in my minis-try; therefore, I want to buildaccording to this pattern.

Paul said in Galatians 5:6, "Forin Jesus Christ neither circumcisionavaileth any thing, nor uncircum-cision; but faith which worketh bylove."

Prospecting

An old prospector, who for a number of years had wandered thetrackless wastes of Nevada's deserts and plains, was reported

missing. He had not been seen for two months. It was notuncommon for this man to be missing for two weeks or a month, but when

two months slipped by and he did not return, he was thought to be lost. Suchwas not the case, however. A party went in search of him and found his

bleached bones on the hot desert sands within a half mile of a well-knownoasis. Had he been lost? No. He knew that territory well; but driven by the

lust for gold, he had waited too long before starting for the water at the oasis. He made a desperate but vain attempt to reach the water, which would have

meant life to him—but he had started too late. Many men today are prospecting for the world's gold—fool's gold.

Thinking that they know their future and environment, they stumble blindlyon—driven by their lusts until they have waited too long to seek Christ,

sustaining water of everlasting life. As the old prospector died within a fewsteps of the water, which would have meant life to him, so do men of today

die within a few steps of the fountain of Living Water—God's Word.

God's Loving Care

When the flesh is worn and weary,

And the spirit is depressed,

And temptations sweep upon you

Like a storm on ocean's breast,

There's a haven ever open

For the tempest-driven one,

There's a shelter for the tempted

In the promise of the Word;

For the standard of the Spirit

Shall be raised against the foe,

And however deep the waters,

They shall never overflow.

When a sorrow comes upon you

That no other soul can share,

When the burden seems too heavy

For the human heart to bear,

There's a Burden-Bearer ready

If you'll trust Him with your load;

For the precious promise reaches

To the depth of human woe,

That however deep the waters,

They shall never overflow.

Victory

When David, ridiculed by his brothers, went out to meet

Goliath, in size he was in a decided minority—but he won!

When Martin Luther nailed his theses on the door of the

cathedral, he was a lonesome minority—but he won!

When Jesus Christ was crucified by the Roman soldiers, He

was a conspicuous minority—but He won!

Did you ever pour water into avessel and find that it had a littlehole, yet so small that it only lost adrop occasionally? However, in afew days it had leaked out.

Thus it is with one's Christianexperience, or with some good traitand characteristic of life. Theresprings a tiny leak in the prayer lifeand one gradually loses his fre-quency to the place where he praysand his fervency in prayer. Otherthings crowd in and take a few min-utes of his time each day that heshould spend alone with God incommunion and quiet meditation.

Watch the leakage in prayer.Turn back to God and the place ofprayer, ask God's forgiveness, andthen renew your prayer life, or theeternal consequences may be dread-ful. Remember, "Men ought alwaysto pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18:1).

There may spring a little leak inone's Bible reading and study.Cheap and worthless literature maybecome enticing, and as one gradu-ally loses out with God's Word, suchworthless literature may becomeparamount in his life. It may emptyyour heart, mind, and soul of God'sgrace. Nothing should take the placeof the blessed old Bible in your

reading. There is a little leak in Sunday

school and church attendance thatempties many people of their Chris-tian experience, along with the grad-ual absence of the mid-week prayerservice. Radio or television maykeep some away from church nowand then. This is a solemn and de-plorable fact with many people. Youhad better watch this leak, dear soul,or you may become a spiritualpauper.

Let me call your attention to theleakage of giving to God's cause andkingdom. To prevent this leakage, one should be a conscientious andfaithful tither. This is God's plan andway of rightly and bountifully sup-porting the Gospel, along with offer-ings from our remaining nine-tenths(read Malachi, Chapter 3). Watchyour leaking in giving! Better stopthe little leak today. It would bemuch better to increase your givingrather than to decrease it. "The lib-eral soul shall be made fat," not theselfish, stingy soul.

There can be many little leaksthat eventually empty a soul of itsgrace and blessed experience, but letme mention the leakage of love.Whatever gradually causes one to

lose his love for God and his fellow-men is a leakage that can becomeserious and even tragic. We aretaught in the Holy Bible: "Thou shaltlove the Lord thy God with all thyheart, with all thy soul, and with allthy mind. This is the first and greatcommandment. And the second islike unto it, Thou shalt love thyneighbour as thyself" (Matthew22:37-39). Paul tells us, "Let broth-erly love continue" (Hebrews 13:1).

If one finds his love leaking out,and he does not love God and man-kind as he used to, it is then hightime to get to the foot of the Crossand weep. The enemy of our soulsseeks to put something into ourhearts to crowd out God's love—alittle selfishness, a little pride, andlittle worldliness, a little hatred, alittle jealousy, a little envy, a littlemalice, and so on, and love leaksout.

Then the heart may becomebitter, critical, stubborn, unforgiv-ing, along with a distaste for thegodly, righteous, and holy. Dearheart, you had better watch the littleleakage.

"And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be over-charged with surfeiting, and drunk-enness, and cares of this life, and sothat day come upon you unawares"(Luke 21:34).

After working many years for thegas company, I saw a parallel of aChristian life and a gas pipeline. Youmight think of that as a strange com-parison, but let me explain. When asteel gas pipeline is placed under-ground, a process of corrosion startsto take place. Understanding that thisprocess was taking place, the gascompanies have tried to combat it bycoating the pipe to separate it frommaking contact with the earth. I likenthis to us as Christians, who are inthe world but not of the world. Weare clothed with the cloak of salva-tion.

The process of corrosion is anelectrochemical process. The type ofearth in which a pipeline is laid hasmuch to do with the speed of corro-sion. Wet, mucky clay is very corro-sive. This is due to it being a lowresistivity soil. In other words, it is agood conductor of electricity.

Galvanic corrosion takes placewhen part of the pipeline becomesanodic and current flows from it to apart that is cathodic. As the currentleaves the anodic part, it takes with ita part of the steel pipe. Normally, thisis a low amount of current measuredin milliamps.

Like the pipeline, the Christianmay find himself in low resistivityareas, which is a very bad envi-ronment. Sometimes it might beschool, work, or some other environ-ment. When the corrosion processtakes place on a pipeline, it eventu-ally leads to a hole in the line, result-ing in a dangerous situation. When a

Christian is exposed to a bad environ-ment, he has to watch that he doesnot get "holes" in his cloak of salva-tion. He must keep himself unspottedfrom the world.

We install cathodic protection tocorrect corrosion of a pipeline. Mag-nesium anodes are fastened to thepipe by wires. These sacrificial an-odes start to corrode and produce asmall electric current, which flowsthrough the earth, collects on thepipeline, flowing to the wire, thenback to the anode. This controls thecorrosion on the pipeline.

As Christians, we have a cathodicprotection: the Holy Spirit is our pro-tection. Jesus Christ was our sacrifice.

In order for the protected pipe-line to work properly, it must beinsulated, or isolated. The tie-ins andmeter settings must not be directlyconnected, and dielectric insulatorsare installed. As Christians, workingand living in the present world, wemust be careful of our contacts withthose of this world. If you are tooclose to the world, it will drain theSpirit of God from your life, causinga hole in your Christian experience.

This is an oversimplification ofpipeline protection, but I believe youcan see the parallel with the Christianexperience. Your contact with theworld and its many vices can be dan-gerous to your Christian experience.

Part of my job at the gas com-pany was to monitor the cathodicprotection. If the readings were toolow, I had to search and find thereason for the drop in the readings. I

liken this to when we read, pray, andattend the preaching services. Godshows us the weak places that needto be corrected. We also had to dothis with a pipeline. May God blessyou.

It's Up to You

It's up to you, my fellow dear,

To do the right or wrong;

To go with those who live for God

Or with the wicked throng;

To be a man sublime and good,

Or sell yourself as junk.

To value life a priceless gem,

Or stagger as a drunk;

To wear a pleasant face;

It's up to you my fellow dear,

To love the Lord and all mankind

And fill a worthwhile place;

Or idle time and life away

With nothing great in view—

Just drifting with the downward tide

Where Satan lands his crew.

It's up to you, my fellow dear,

To live a life that's clean;

To show the world you do not bow

To anything that's mean;

Or have no aim and purpose great

For which to live or die,

Then go unhonored and unsung

Where souls forever sigh.

Brother Leamon Whitehead

The Everlasting Gospel

We are now in the seventh andlast dispensation of time, accordingto the Word of God. Mysteries havebeen revealed down through theages, and most of the prophecieshave already been fulfilled. TheBible talks about this day being asthe light of seven days, speaking ofthe Truth. The church has more torejoice about today. She has greatervictory over the devil and all that hehas tried to bring forth downthrough the ages of time. We havemuch to shout and praise Godabout. He has brought us out andset us free from that old beast, hisimage, his mark, and the number ofhis name. People should be shoutingand praising God for the victory that

He has brought to His people today. The devil tries to cover himself,

but I thank God that Jesus uncovershim. Jesus will let you see who thedevil is and how he is working inour day and time. Even though hehas been exposed in everything thathe has been working down throughthe ages, he is working through theeighth beast today. False religion hasjoined forces to fight against theLamb and to fight against thechurch. The battle is still raging to-day. I am glad to be free from sectar-ian religion. I was raised in sectarianreligion, but I thank God for themessage of the Church of God. Itbrought me out of that terrible dark-ness. Today I am standing upon thesea of glass and giving praise andglory and honor to the Lamb!

Are you following the Lamb? Are you on your white horse? Areyou riding behind Him? He is lead-ing the army right along. My friend, the battle is raging. In this day andtime, many people have fallen bythe wayside. Some have slippedback into old Babylon. We need topraise God for the Truth of His HolyWord. We need to praise God formen of God who will stand anddeclare the everlasting Gospel andmake it clear to us so that we do nothave to stumble and walk in dark-ness. Praise God forever! I havewonderful memories of how Godwas able to teach me and bring meout into the precious light of HisWord.

We are living in the evening oftime, and we can look back and see

the battles that the church has gonethrough and the victories that shehas won. Praise God! We ought tohave more liberty in this day than inany other time. Why? We havegreater victory. There is no need forpeople to have trouble with the olddragon today. The Lord has uncov-ered him. We should not have anyproblem with that old leopard-likebeast because he has been exposedfor what he is. The old pagan reli-gion that fought against the saints ofGod back in the days of the OldTestament and all down through theages was wounded. The morning-time church went to battle againsthim, and the Bible says that one ofhis heads was wounded unto death.Dear one, that ought to bring ashout to your soul, that the Truth Hebrought your way has set you free.

John 8:31-32 states: "Then saidJesus to those Jews which believedon him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and thetruth shall make you free." I thankGod for the Truth of God's Word. That bright and shining light overfalse religion can set you free fromevery sectarian way. Glory be toGod! When the saints of God gathertogether, we ought to hold a rebukeon the devil so that he cannot haveany part in the services and so thatwe can rejoice and praise God in thebeauty of holiness. The devil willcome to every service and try to puta damper on things. We need thefood from Heaven that strengthensthe inner man and gives us thepower and the victory to go forwardfor God. It is up to each of us to holda rebuke on the enemy of souls.

Paganism and Papalism

The morning-time church wentforth anointed by the Spirit of God.They laid the Truth on that old beastof paganism. Men and women gotsaved and came out of terrible dark-ness. Historians say that by the endof the first century, hardly anyonevisited those old pagan temples. Areyou glad that you do not serve a

dead God? Are you glad that theGod you are serving is alive and thatyou can feel Him in your heart, inyour soul, and in your every move?He is there to direct you, lead you,and guide you into all truth. Glorybe to God! The morning-time churchkept hammering away at paganismwith the Truth until it began tocrumble and fall. That is what ittakes today to stand against falsereligion. You need to rejoice in theTruth. You should not just sit thereand clam up. No matter what degreeof sin you were once in, it was theTruth that brought you out.

The Truth of God's Word camesearching and got hold of us andbrought old-time conviction. Youmight have thought you were doingwell, but then you felt the convictingpower of the Spirit of God. It takesthe preaching of the Word of God tosearch you and find you. That iswhat found me. Glory be to God!The message of Truth went forthand found me. I did not think I wastoo bad as a sinner, but thank God,the Truth came close and searching.

Are you glad the Truth comesclose and searching? That is the rea-son I am in the Church of God andfree from Babylon. When the Wordof God came close and searching, itdid not feel good. He was tearingmy little playhouse all to pieces. Doyou know what He was getting meready for? He was getting me readyfor Father's house. When I saw that,I did not mind leaving my spiritualshack and coming up to Father'shouse. I did not just wander up hereby myself, but He led me all theway. Praise God!

Revelation, Chapter 12, says thatold dragon fought, but the greatdragon was cast out. We read inverses 7-9: "And there was war inheaven: Michael and his angelsfought against the dragon; and thedragon fought and his angels, Andprevailed not; neither was theirplace found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth thewhole world: he was cast out into

the earth, and his angels were castout with him."

The dragon is the one that stuckout his head before the woman, ready to devour her child as soon ashe was born, but thank God for themorning-time Apostles who laid outthe Truth. They shot straight, andthe Truth delivered men and womenfrom false religion and got them towhere they could praise God. TheLord always likes to hear true praisecoming from His people, but thedevil does not give up. Do not makea mistake and think he has given uptoday, because he has not. We needto keep the old Gospel gun loaded atall times, because when the enemygets defeated on one front, he willgo to work another way.

Revelation, Chapter 13, speaksof a leopard-like beast, that beast ofpapalism. Oh, what a sad time inhistory! This was more than a thou-sand years of darkness, a time thatwas approximately 1,260 years. From A.D. 270 to A.D. 1530, thatbeast fought the church, and becauseof that, the church began to takethings for granted. They left theirfirst love, and many things hap-pened. That great mountain burningwith fire was cast into the sea, andup out of that sea came this leopard-like beast. The beast of papalismfought against the people of Godand put many people to death. Thatbeast continued, but God set a timelimit on it. False religion is verydestructive. I am glad to be freefrom it. I am glad to know that I amfollowing the Lamb!

Be Faithful

The devil knows that he doesnot have free reign. He works hardto do all he can in the span of timehe has, but God has put a time limiton him. When those saints weregoing through that persecution inthe Dark Ages, it might have lookedas though that day would neverpass, but it did. After about 1260years, it passed. God began to revealTruth once again to the true saints ofGod.

You should never forget aboutthe enemy. You need to ever keepwhat God has done fresh in yourmind. What a blessing it is to be ableto sit under the Truth of the Gospel!

The message of Truth is not toput you down or cripple you, but itis to bring you higher and higher inthe things of God. The good thingsof God build you up spiritually. Oneof these days we are going to flyaway. The force of gravitation isgoing to release us and we are goingup. Oh, what a day that will be!Think of what God has done andwhat the saints of God have gonethrough so that we could have whatwe have today! Just as they werefaithful, we need to be faithful. Weneed to carry the torch and keep itburning for those who follow afterus. The sounding forth of thetrumpet gives a certain sound.

We must not take God forgranted, as old Israel did. Israelgot in trouble and got carried awayinto captivity. The Bible says theywept when they remembered Zion. They looked where they were andthought about their homeland. Those who carried them away cap-tive wanted them to sing, but theyhung their harps on the willow be-cause they had no song of joy intheir hearts. They said, in so manywords, "How can we sing the Lord'ssongs in a strange land?" The Biblesays that where the Spirit of theLord is, there is liberty.

God sets the watchmen on thewall. They are up there so they canwatch for the enemy. They arewatching over the flock. Often apastor carries a heavy load. A goodpastor can look out over the flockand watch them to see how they arefeeding and discern how they aredoing. At times, he loses sleep. Hemay not come and talk to you per-sonally, but he loses sleep when hesenses that someone is not feedingas he ought to, not growing as heought to, or not as faithful as heought to be.

A godly pastor wants you to befat in the Lord. By the grace of Godand by the Holy Spirit of God, he

wants to lead you into green pas-tures where you can eat and be satis-fied. The Bible says that we are thesheep of His pasture. How couldyou please a flock of sheep anymorethan having a good, lush pastureand plenty of cool water to drink?Praise God, we are feasting on thatheavenly manna! The church serviceis where you get your soul fed. Thatis where you get the strength to goon. You need to make sure that youhave on the whole armor of Godand that you do not get wounded inthe fight. You need to keep going onfor God.

"Come Out of Her"

We have more to rejoice abouttoday than any other people becauseof the great victories that have beenwon and the mysteries that havebeen revealed. John saw a mysterywhen he saw mystery Babylon. Atfirst, he did not understand. Hethought it looked like a real work ofGod, but the angel said to him, inessence: "Come hither, John. I wantto show you the mystery of thiswoman."

In that dark and cloudy day inthe Scripture, the lamb-like beast isthe beast of Protestantism. It was atime of sect making, a time of bring-ing people into bondage. This iswhere those souls got into bondage.Later on, John said in Revelation18:4, "And I heard another voicefrom heaven, saying, Come out ofher, my people." I am glad that Iheard that voice. Have you heardthat voice? I am not only a "comeouter," but I am a "stay outer." Glorybe to God!

For three hundred fifty years theold beast of Protestantism deceivedpeople. This organization and thatorganization broke away and wentoff by themselves, separating peo-ple. The message to God's people insectism is "Come out of her, mypeople, that ye be not partakers ofher sins" (Revelation 18:4). God hassent judgment on that organization.

When Babylon's city was set onfire and burning and falling, what

were the saints doing? Revelation19:3a says, "And again they said,Alleluia." They were rejoicing. Why?Babylon was falling, and souls werebeing set free. That old beast ofProtestantism has captivated manypeople around the world.

Sometimes the devil will try towork and say, "Their parking lot isfull, and here you are struggling tokeep the building open." Many peo-ple have been drawn away by that. This is one reason that you need tobe in the services and be alert, sothat God can keep the scales off youreyes and you can see clearly. You donot want to get entangled in theyoke of bondage again. The Biblesays to work out your own salva-tion; therefore, you have some workto do, but it is God who keeps us.We are to keep ourselves in the loveof God, to be faithful, and to be allthat God would have us to be.

God's Faithfulness

It is God's faithfulness and Hiskeeping power that keeps you too.Sometimes along the way you maybecome a little weary or a littledrowsy, spiritually speaking. Youmay lose a little enthusiasm at times. That is where the faithfulness ofGod comes in. I have had Him comeand shake me a little and say, "Hey,wake up!" Has He ever done that toyou? If He had not done that to me,I would not be where I am today. Iwould have gone on and slept thesleep of slumber and lost out. That isHis keeping power.

I am not preaching eternalsecurity, but I am telling you that Heis a faithful God. If you will staycommitted to Him, He will keepyou. He is faithful. He will shakeyou if you get a little slothful.

Maybe you go to church, butyou are not giving God the attentionthat you ought to. God will work onyou and say, "Hey, look at thepreacher; watch him." That is God'sfaithfulness. Some people go to aservice and pass notes and talk andjust put in time. However, God willtell you to look straight ahead and

stay focused on the service. There isa portion that you need, and if youdo not make yourself attentive, youare not going to receive the portionthat you need. You have to do that.Your husband or wife cannot do itfor you, your friends cannot do it foryou, and the pastor cannot do it foryou. You have to make yourselfavailable. You have to get up toyour place and eat like you are hun-gry, spiritually speaking. You musteat from God's Word to stay healthyspiritually. In the physical, you candiet if you must, but you should notbe on a diet spiritually. You need toeat heartily of the Word and get fatin the Lord.

Before I ever heard of theChurch of God, I was a young manabout seventeen years of age. Godhas been good to me. It has been awonderful journey. I am not justenduring salvation, but I am enjoy-ing it. It is a thrill! I wish I couldexpress it better, but I keep trying toget the message out and tell othershow wonderful it is. Salvation is themost wonderful thing that can everhappen to you! It gives life a pur-pose, and it makes life worthwhile. It is so wonderful that if there wasnot a Heaven to go to, it would stillbe the best way to live.

I am enjoying the best thing thisside of Heaven. It is wonderful to beforgiven, to be cleaned up, and to bemade whiter than any Fuller's soapcan make something. It is wonderfulto be filled with the Holy Spirit andto have joy and peace flowing like ariver! If you stay with God, it getsbetter all the time.

The Evening Light

Revelation 17:11 says, "And thebeast that was, and is not, even he isthe eighth, and is of the seven, andgoeth into perdition." Verse 14states, "These shall make war withthe Lamb, and the Lamb shall over-come them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that arewith him are called, and chosen, andfaithful."

Revelation 19:11-16 reads: "And

I saw heaven opened, and behold awhite horse; and he that sat uponhim was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judgeand make war. His eyes were as aflame of fire, and on his head weremany crowns; and he had a namewritten, that no man knew, but hehimself. And he was clothed with avesture dipped in blood: and hisname is called The Word of God.

"And the armies which were inheaven followed him upon whitehorses, clothed in fine linen, whiteand clean. And out of his mouthgoeth a sharp sword, that with it heshould smite the nations: and heshall rule them with a rod of iron:and he treadeth the winepress of thefierceness and wrath of AlmightyGod. And he hath on his vestureand on his thigh a name written,KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

In about the year 1880 whenTruth and light returned, the callwent out to God's people downthrough the dark courts of Babel toflee from Babylon. The messagewent rumbling forth, destroying thehigh places of religion, and Truthand light came back. I praise Godfor His goodness and that Truth andlight was brought my way.

In the Evening Light Songs thefirst three songs tell a lot about thestory. The first song is entitled "TheEvening Light," which speaks of ourday. It tells you about the age ofProtestantism being a cloudy day,but then it comes to pass that theevening shall be light. Beautifulsongs have been written about thelight of God. They are all good, butsome of them stand out to us morethan others. The next song is called"Prophetic Truth." It begins, "Twassung by the poets, foreseen in the Spirit,A time of refreshing is near." The thirdsong is entitled "Thy Children AreGathering Home." Praise God!

I encourage people never toforget where the Lord brought themfrom. It will hold them steady in thehard times when the devil bringstemptation, trials, and tribulation. Itwill help your testimony when youtestify about how far away you were

when the Lord sought you.Verse 4 of the song entitled "The

Prophetic Truth" reads, "Theprophet's keen vision, transpiercing theages, Beheld us to Zion return; We'llsing of our freedom, though Babylonrages, We'll shout as her city dothburn." Praise God, we will shout asher city burns. The chorus reads,"Oh, glory to Jesus! we hail the brightday, And high on our banner salvationdisplay, The mists of confusion arepassing away."

Verse 3 of the song "The EveningLight" says, "Lo, the ransomed arereturning, Robed in shining crystalwhite, Leaping, shouting home to Zion,Happy in the evening light."

Are you happy in the eveninglight? Can you feel that rumblingdown inside? Verse 2 of the song"Thy Children Are Gathering Home"says, "False shepherds divided and scat-tered the flock, And hirelings ruled o'erthem for gain, But back to their fold onMount Zion's fair height They come toforever remain."

I want to call your attentionagain to this eighth beast, a real en-emy. The seventh letter, written tothe church at Laodicea in Revelation,Chapter 3, describes our day. If youare losing your enthusiasm and yourzeal for God, that is just what theenemy would like to see. He wantsyou to slow down and quit tellingothers the Gospel message. Youneed to let the Lord put you on thewheel and sharpen you up a little.

The prevailing condition inLaodicea was that the people saidthey were rich and increased withgoods and that they had need ofnothing. This is the spirit that isworking today. May you stay alert, listen to the message of Truth, andlisten to true men of God when theyare blowing the trumpet. You needto have both ears open, because theenemy is a very deceptive fellow. The Lord told the Laodicean churchthat their true condition was thatthey were wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.

Revelation 3:18 says, "I counselthee to buy of me gold tried in thefire, that thou mayest be rich; and

white raiment, that thou mayest beclothed, and that the shame of thynakedness do not appear; andanoint thine eyes with eyesalve, thatthou mayest see." That is not thekind of gold that is stored at FortKnox, if they still have any of it. It is

the true Word of God that has beentried. The devil cannot do muchwith people like that. Do you knowwhy? They have the victory. Theyare going forward for God. They arenot singing the blues; they are sing-ing the praises of God. The church

has more to rejoice over today withall the victories that have been wonthan in any other time.

We would never be able to give

a complete or detailed report on all

the good things that took place dur-

want to acknowledge that the minis-

to the saints and an alarming wake-

safety. They stirred the saints to a

closer walk with the Lord, and

piercing thoughts to the lost of the

sad eternity awaiting those who

refuse God's offered mercy. Brother

David Watson of Tennessee was the

evangelist for the evening services.

His first message was on "Hell" and

the awful torments there are to

those forsaken forever with no

were other penetrating messages

brought by Brothers Richard

Unfortunately, we are living in a

Mark 10:17 And when he was goneforth into the way, there came one run-ning, and kneeled to him, and askedhim, Good Master, what shall I do thatI may inherit eternal life?

18 And Jesus said unto him, Whycallest thou me good? there is none goodbut one, that is, God.

19 Thou knowest the command-ments, Do not commit adultery, Do notkill, Do not steal, Do not bear false wit-ness, Defraud not, Honour thy fatherand mother.

20 And he answered and said untohim, Master, all these have I observed

from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved

him, and said unto him, One thing thoulackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thouhast, and give to the poor, and thoushalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had greatpossessions.

23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardlyshall they that have riches enter into thekingdom of God!

24 And the disciples were aston-

ished at his words. But Jesus answerethagain, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust inriches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to gothrough the eye of a needle, than for arich man to enter into the kingdom ofGod.

26 And they were astonished out ofmeasure, saying among themselves,Who then can be saved?

27 And Jesus looking upon themsaith, With men it is impossible, but notwith God: for with God all things arepossible.

Brother Richard Talbot

Trusting in Riches

The disciples asked in theirastonishment, "Who then can besaved?" This conversation with theyoung man astonished them "out ofmeasure." As Jesus and His discipleswere walking about, going from oneplace to another, in the distance theysaw someone running to Jesus whowas excited. Perhaps he was out ofbreath and fell on his knees. He be-gan to cry out to Jesus, "Good Mas-

ter, what shall I do that I may inheriteternal life?" Jesus looked at him,and His first response was "Whycallest thou me good?" In otherwords, Jesus was saying, "Why areyou calling Me good? Son, I wantyou to get this point and take it toheart: no one is good but God inHeaven."

I can imagine that must havebeen a tough blow for the youngman, because in his mind, he, too, thought he was a very good person.

Many people have the opinion thatthey are very good people. Jesus cutright to the heart of the matter byasking why he was calling Himgood. He was letting the young manknow that the only way he could betruly good was to have the Father inhis heart and life.

As they continued the conversa-tion, Jesus knew and understoodthat this man had high ideals, butHe did not allow him to think hewas above others. Jesus has a way of

bringing everyone to the same level. He brings the poor up and the richdown. He lets us all kneel beforeHim on equal ground before Cal-vary. However, there is none goodbut One, and that is God. This af-fects many in their thinking today. The churches across our land arefilled with lots of people in theirfinery who go to the house of God toworship the Lord. They give of theirriches to their churches, and whenthey walk out, they strut along feel-ing good about themselves. Theythink, "I've been to church, and Igave a good offering." They feelcomfortable in their own goodness.Today if Jesus were to speak to thempersonally, He would say, "There isnone good but one, and that is,God."

How deceptive good feelingsare! Jesus spoke to the rich youngman and said, "There is none goodbut one, that is, God." Jesus went onto say, "Thou knowest the com-mandments. . . ." Those command-ments, all of them that Jesus men-tioned, dealt directly with this fel-low. Those commandments in-volved his connection with others inthe world. He told Jesus, "All thesehave I observed from my youth." Hehad been a good man, but he forgotthe first commandment, which says,"Thou shalt have no other gods be-fore me." Little did he realize thatthe riches he had gathered to himselfhad become a god to him, little bylittle. He had come to the placewhere he had put his trust in riches. It has often been said that the verything a man spends his time think-ing about and dwelling on becomesa god to him. What you spend yourtime thinking upon will become agod to you.

Jesus, beholding him, loved him.I can just imagine there might havebeen a little mist in Jesus' eyes as Hewas touched in His heart. As Jesuslooked at him, He loved him, and itwould have been easy for Jesus tohave let down the bar a little tomake an exception for this youngman, just to cut him a little slack, soto speak. That is what many people

want today when it comes to theWord of God. They want the preach-er to cut them some slack. They donot want the things of God to be soridged, so clear, so definite, and soabsolute.

Some teachers in school gradethe students' papers on a curve, butGod does not grade on a curve. Goddoes not make exceptions for any-one. He does not have any favoritesthat He is a little easier on. The re-quirements for eternal life are thesame for you and your children asthey are for me and my children. Nomatter what your name is, no matterhow much you have given to thechurch, and no matter what you door who you are, eternal life is goingto cost you the same as it costs me.

You may ask, "What is wrongwith riches?" Nothing is wrong withriches as long as they are conse-crated to the Lord. Riches are notaltogether the problem, but in somany words, Jesus said, "How hardis it for those who trust in riches toenter the Kingdom of Heaven!"

What Has Captured Your Love?

The work of God has to operateon monetary funds. Riches are notthe problem. What will you sell yoursoul for? Riches are not alwayslooked upon as money or wealth, but riches can be termed as thingsthat work to crowd the mind. Aswealth blinds the eyes, so richesblind the mind to reality, to realTruth, and to the real heart of thematter.

Poverty can blind the heart andthe mind to the real problems of life. Many poor people will be lost in hellthe same as wealthy people. Povertydoes not guarantee you a relation-ship with the Lord. Some poor peo-ple have been overtaken by pride. Some people are really poor in thisworld, but they are proud in theirpoverty.

Problems, troubles, doubts, fears, and failures in life can blindthe heart and the mind to the reallyneedy issues of life. Satan will useanything he can to build a barrier in

your mind and in your heart toblock you from finding God. He willdo what he can to keep you fromgetting saved.

People can become conceitedand think too highly of themselves. The definition of conceit is "thinkingof one's self very highly; having anexaggerated opinion of yourself[most likely, an opinion nobody elseshares]; proud, arrogant, not caringabout others in their difficulties."

The Proverb writer said inProverbs 26:12, "Seest thou a manwise in his own conceit? there ismore hope of a fool than of him."Think of that! Proverbs 29:20 says,"Seest thou a man that is hasty inhis words? there is more hope of afool than of him." Who is a fool?Proverbs 28:26 states, "He that trust-eth in his own heart is a fool: butwhoso walketh wisely, he shall bedelivered."

Psalm 14:1 reads, "The fool hathsaid in his heart, There is no God."Proverbs 10:23 tells us, "It is as sportto a fool to do mischief: but a man ofunderstanding hath wisdom." Prov-erbs 12:15 says, "The way of a fool isright in his own eyes: but he thathearkeneth unto counsel is wise."

Proverbs 15:5 says, "A fooldespiseth his father's instruction."Proverbs 10:18 reads, "He that hid-eth hatred with lying lips, and hethat uttereth a slander, is a fool."Proverbs 1:7 declares, "The fear ofthe LORD is the beginning of knowl-edge: but fools despise wisdom andinstruction." Proverbs 3:35 says, "Thewise shall inherit glory: but shameshall be the promotion of fools."Proverbs 13:19 reads, "The desireaccomplished is sweet to the soul:but it is abomination to fools todepart from evil."

Proverbs 14:9 states, "Fools makea mock at sin: but among the righ-teous there is favour." It seems thatthere is no hope for a man like that. However, the Word says in Proverbs26:12 there is more hope for a foolthan for a man who is wise in hisown conceit. That is quite a drasticcomparison to think there is morehope for a fool who says there is no

God than for a man who is clothedin his own self-righteousness andconceited with a high opinion ofhimself. There is more hope for afool than for the man who turnsfrom Christ because he has greatpossessions.

Who Needs to Be Saved?

Who can be saved? Who reallyneeds to be saved? If you were towalk down the streets of manyAmerican cities, you could ask alarge number of individuals, "Areyou a Christian?" Most of themwould say without much hesitation,"Yes, I'm a Christian." However, ifyou were to ask, "Are you saved?"many of them would reply, "I don'tknow exactly what you mean bythat, but I'm doing everything Iknow to do. Oh, there are a fewthings that I shouldn't be doing, butI'm really trying."

Oh, the deception of goodthings! Prosperity and blessingshave become a curse to many peo-ple. Who needs to be saved? Every-one who does not have a genuine,life-changing experience of salva-tion, wherein he knows down in hisheart that he has been born again. Ifyou do not know that personally, you need to get saved. No matterwhat religious experience you pro-fess, if you do not know that youhave been born of the Spirit of Godand had a definite change in yournature, your thoughts, your tongue, and your way of living, you havenot yet found salvation. Being bornagain still makes a person a newcreature in Jesus Christ.

Who needs to be saved? Anyonewho yet lives in sin needs to besaved. God cannot condone sin, andHe certainly cannot approve of sinto exist in a Christian. You mayclaim to be a Christian, but if youare still living in your sins, you needto be saved.

Who else needs to be saved? Those who are religious and morallygood but have never truly repentedand confessed before God that theyare sinners and need to be saved.

You cannot be saved until you firstadmit to yourself and to God thatyou are a sinner. If you have neverbeen brought to that point, no mat-ter what you confess or profess, youstill need to be saved. No one canget saved or be born again withoutfirst acknowledging his lost, sinfulcondition.

Who else needs to be saved? Those who have backed away fromTruth and have gone back to thingsthat God had delivered them fromneed to be saved. Those who havebackslidden and have walked awayfrom Truth need to be saved and tocome back to Truth. They have torepent, ask God for forgiveness, andbe born again. Repentance is neces-sary. Jesus urged the church atLaodicea to be zealous and repent,so He could come and sup withthem.

Who else needs to be saved? Those who are in a spiritually stag-nate condition. Have you lost thefire out of your life? If so, you needto repent and ask God to forgiveyou. You need to rekindle thoseflames and get the fire of salvationin your soul.

Getting Rid of That WhichHinders the Soul

Going back to our Scripture text, the rich young man who came toJesus found that the things whichhinder a soul from being saved canalso hinder one after he is saved. That is the reason Jesus let himknow that he lacked one thing. When Jesus beheld him, He lovedhim, and His heart went out to thisyoung man. Jesus was stirred withinby a very powerful emotion of love, and no doubt He would have likedto have wrapped His arms aroundhim to draw him right into the cir-cle. However, Jesus knew that if Hetook him in as he was, those thingshe desired would be a problem tohim in his spiritual life. It is good toget rid of the problem first. Jesuslooked at him and told him that helacked one thing. He was only onestep away from receiving that which

he needed.Jesus knew this man needed to

clean house and sell everything hehad, but that was quite a shock tothe young man. Jesus told him to sellwhatever he had and give it to thepoor and then come and followHim. If he would have done that, hewould have had treasures inHeaven. He could have had wealthbeyond belief, but he went awaysorrowfully. What Jesus said to himwas not what he was expecting tohear. Many people are not expectinganything like that in this day andage. People would like to go toHeaven on Easy Street, so to speak.

You may say, "Surely, I havetalents that God can use." You mighthave talents that God can use, butyou probably have lots of things thatHe cannot use, so God has to cleanyou up and get rid of all the thingsHe cannot use. He will never takeaway from you anything that He canuse for good. He will increase it andbless it. He will use you in whateverway He can, but He takes away allthe self-centered living, all the self-conceit, and anything else thatstands in the way. You have tounload all that is bad. That is thereason Jesus said it is easier for acamel to go through the eye of aneedle than for a rich man to enterthe Kingdom of Heaven. Everythingunnecessary must be stripped off.

Jesus was teaching that it iseasier to unload a camel, that it iseasier for a conceited man to unloadhis conceit, or that it is easier for aself-righteous man to unload hisself-righteousness than for a richman to unload his riches. A personwho has had a reputation of being aChristian, yet knows in the depths ofhis soul that he is not what hisreputation says, will not get intoHeaven.

Jesus loved that rich, youngman, but love requires the truth.Jesus could not welcome that man inwithout being truthful with him. Heneeded to tell him that his riches hadhold of him. His wealth had at-tached itself to him and that wouldhave been a problem to him in his

Christian walk. He could not haveeternal life and hold on to all thosepossessions that his trust andconfidence was in.

Fully Surrendering to God

Zacchaeus was a wealthy fellowtoo, but Jesus did not tell him to sellall that he had, because his attitudewas altogether different. He was notattached to his wealth. By the timehe jumped down from the tree, hehad already made up his mind thathe was going to give half of hisgoods away. He said if he hadwronged anybody, he was going torestore him fourfold. Jesus did nothave a problem with Zacchaeus'swealth. Had the rich young manbeen of the attitude: "Lord, I needyou. I need eternal life, and I'll giveaway everything I have to get it,"Jesus would have embraced him,and He would not have told him to

sell everything he had. Whatevergets in the way of serving God mustgo. The things that hinder a soulfrom being saved will also hinder asoul after he is saved. It is best toclean house at the start.

If you were to receive a personalletter from God sent to your ad-dress, inviting you to come to Christto receive salvation, I can imaginethat you would be impressed bythat. You would grab that letter andrun with acceptance, saying, "I'vegot a personal invitation from theLord! It came to me in the mail."Well, you have an important invita-tion coming to you this day. TheWord of God is addressed to "who-soever will," and that takes in you.The Gospel message of salvationsays, "If any" and that takes in youas well. What can be more sure thanthat? Jesus opened His arms andsaid, "Whosoever will, let himcome." The message is for you,

friend.Who can be saved? Those who

are ready to cast all their hopes, trust, and confidence at the altar ofsacrifice. You need to throw yourselfupon the mercies of Jesus Christ andlet Him save you and fill your lifewith His divine presence. You willfind that what you willingly giveup, you will never miss. He will fillthe vacancy in your soul and satisfyyour heart. If you will yield allthings to the Lord, He will not haveto tell you to get rid of those things. You must break the ties that bindyou. God knows you cannot haveHim and still hold on to certainthings. Won't you let go and let Godmove into your life? Won't you letGod have His way in your life? Whothen can be saved? You can besaved. If you are without Christ, youcan find Him this very hour.

Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that ye benot judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge,ye shall be judged: and with whatmeasure ye mete, it shall be measured toyou again.

3 And why beholdest thou themote that is in thy brother's eye, butconsiderest not the beam that is in thineown eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thybrother, Let me pull out the mote out of

thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thineown eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out thebeam out of thine own eye; and thenshalt thou see clearly to cast out themote out of thy brother's eye.

Brother Calvin Foster

Critical Attitudes

In the world today manypeople have the unloving, judgmen-tal attitude of condemning others. You see, it is one thing to havethat spirit and to put condemnationon someone else, but it is anotherthing to be on the receiving end ofthat same critical, unloving, judg-mental attitude.

I am thankful that God broughtme from a miserable life of sin andput His love in my heart. I want tolove everyone. You need to walkwith God to the best of your knowl-edge and understanding. We live ina spirit world, and some spirits areunreasonable. If you do not acceptwhat some people say right away, they will have nothing to do withyou.

The way you judge others is theway you will be judged. The wayyou measure others will be turned

right around and used on you. Aman might have a little mote, or atiny stick, in his eye, and you maysay, "Let me get that little mote outof your eye." Yet you have a bigstick in your eye. First, you need toget the big stick out of your own eyeso that you can see to get the littlemote out of your brother's eye.

People with this judgmentalspirit will cut you off and wantnothing to do with you if you do notsee things their way. Some people inthe religious world will havenothing to do with anyone who willnot accept their teachings.

Mark 9:36-41 states: "And hetook a child, and set him in themidst of them: and when he hadtaken him in his arms, he said untothem, Whosoever shall receive oneof such children in my name, receiv-eth me: and whosoever shall receiveme, receiveth not me, but him thatsent me. And John answered him,

saying, Master, we saw one castingout devils in thy name, and hefolloweth not us: and we forbadhim, because he followeth not us.But Jesus said, Forbid him not: forthere is no man which shall do amiracle in my name, that can lightlyspeak evil of me. For he that is notagainst us is on our part. For whoso-ever shall give you a cup of water todrink in my name, because ye be-long to Christ, verily I say unto you,he shall not lose his reward."

The disciples came to Jesus andtold Him that they saw a mancasting out devils in His name, andthey said, "He is not followingus. He is not of our group. He doesnot do things the same way we door think as we think." This mancould have been one of the manyother disciples or one of John's disci-ples. The Bible does not say whohe was, but he was working for Je-sus.

Those Who Do EvilHate the Light

I would say that the only reasonto stop someone from casting outdevils in Jesus' name is if he has sinin his life. First John 3:8 says, "Hethat committeth sin is of the devil;for the devil sinneth from the begin-ning. For this purpose the Son ofGod was manifested, that he mightdestroy the works of the devil." If Isaw somebody that I knew had sinin his life trying to cast out devils, Iwould say, "You had better stopplaying with God."

Christ came to put away sin. When sin is put away, evil is putaway. Galatians 2:17 reads, "But if,while we seek to be justified byChrist, we ourselves also are foundsinners, is therefore Christ the minis-ter of sin? God forbid." Christ is notthe minister of sin. You should notplay with sin. You need to get sinout of your life. In Galatians 2:20Paul said, "I am crucified withChrist: nevertheless I live; yet not I,but Christ liveth in me."

Jesus told the Jews in John 8:21,"I go my way, and ye shall seek me,and shall die in your sins: whither Igo, ye cannot come." You may singor preach, but if you die in yoursins, you cannot go where Jesus is.Hebrews 9:26 tells us that Christcame to "put away sin by thesacrifice of himself." You cannotplay with sin and call yourself aChristian.

The religious world teaches thatyou can be a Christian and yet havesin in your life; but according to theBible, that is not true. John 3:16-19states: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,that whosoever believeth in himshould not perish, but have everlast-ing life. For God sent not his Soninto the world to condemn theworld; but that the world throughhim might be saved. He that believ-eth on him is not condemned: but hethat believeth not is condemnedalready, because he hath not be-lieved in the name of the only begot-ten Son of God. And this is the con-

demnation, that light is come intothe world, and men loved darknessrather than light, because theirdeeds were evil."

Someone may say, "People arenot going to stay around long if youkeep crying out against sin." If theyare honest hearted, they will. Somepeople do not want to sit under aholiness pastor Sunday after Sundaybecause their deeds are evil. MayGod pull the covers off them. Jesussaid in John 3:20-21: "For every onethat doeth evil hateth the light, nei-ther cometh to the light, lest hisdeeds should be reproved. But hethat doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made mani-fest, that they are wrought in God."

If there is any wrong in your life, you ought to ask God to show you.If you want to make Heaven yourhome, you need to say, "O Lord, search me; show me if something inmy life is displeasing to You." I wantto live right and die right. If you liveright, you will die right. On theother hand, if you live wrong, youare going to die wrong.

Learning the Way of GodMore Perfectly

In John 16:12-13 Jesus told Hisdisciples: "I have yet many things tosay unto you, but ye cannot bearthem now. Howbeit when he, theSpirit of truth, is come, he will guideyou into all truth." Therefore, any-thing you believe that is not Truthdid not come from the Holy Spirit. Some man or your own thoughtsgave the idea to you. If what youbelieve is Truth, you will not mindhaving the Word of God inspect it.

If you are an honest-heartedperson, you want to know the Truth. If what you believe is Truth, it willstand the inspection. The momentyou say you are a Christian, peopleare watching your life. You may belistening to a relative or your friend, but you need to listen to the Spirit ofGod. The people of God are livingthe Bible, and they are dressing asthe Bible says to dress.

We read in Acts 18:24-28: "And

a certain Jew named Apollos, bornat Alexandria, an eloquent man, andmighty in the scriptures, came toEphesus. This man was instructed inthe way of the Lord; and being fer-vent in the spirit, he spake andtaught diligently the things of theLord, knowing only the baptismof John. And he began to speakboldly in the synagogue: whomwhen Aquila and Priscilla hadheard, they took him unto them, andexpounded unto him the way ofGod more perfectly.

"And when he was disposed topass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receivehim: who, when he was come, helped them much which had be-lieved through grace: For he might-ily convinced the Jews, and thatpublicly, showing by the scripturesthat Jesus was Christ."

Apollos had the Spirit of God,and he was a mighty preacher, buthe could only preach what he knew.A man who is truly honest will beopen to the Truth when it is revealedto him, just as Apollos was whenAquila and Priscilla expounded tohim the way of God more perfectly.I really believe there are morehonest-hearted people out there whowant to live for God, and they wantto live for God the right way. Now,if a man is dishonest in his heart, hecan twist the Scriptures to say any-thing he wants them to say. Deepdown in his heart, such a personreally does not believe the Truth.

Sometimes people get caught upin religious systems for prestige. They get the big head and want tobe called Reverend, Father, Doctor,or Rabbi. Jesus said in Matthew 23:8,"But be not ye called Rabbi: for oneis your Master, even Christ; and allye are brethren." They do not wantto obey what Jesus said to do. Theydo it for prestige or for securitywithin a group. A preacher maytrade his honesty for prestige. Whenhe sells himself, he becomes a pup-pet to the organization, and as such,he is no longer useful to God. Godwants men who will stand up andtell the Truth from the Word.

The Need to Watch Your Spirit

As a Christian, you need towatch your spirit, because somepeople may not see everything thesame way you see it. It is not be-cause they are dishonest or dumb. They just do not see it. Therefore, you should not have an attitude anda spirit about you that would wantto cut them off. Although you havestandards and convictions, youshould not be judgmental.

Being judgmental can causedivision among those who claim tobe Christians. Judgmental peoplewill declare war on anyone whocannot at once accept their opinionsand doctrines without giving themtime for serious consideration. Whilethey declare war on others, they willnot accept the fact that they may bewrong about some things.

I like Apollos's spirit. WhenAquila and Priscilla took Apollosaside, they reasoned with him. When you talk to someone in theright spirit and say, "Have you everconsidered that?" an honest-heartedperson will consider it and say, "Inever thought about it that way."However, you have to be carefuland prayerful, because some minis-ters have a lot of man-made doc-trines. They lie to people and twistthe Scriptures.

Some things are more importantin the eyes of God than people maythink. Many people lift up certainthings so high, but the most impor-tant thing in the eyes of God is tohave love. It is important to hate sin,but we must love everyone. Assaints of God, we ought to haveconfidence in one another and strivefor unity. We are all brothers andsisters in Jesus Christ. We do notneed peace treaties to make menbrothers. The blood of Jesus Christhas made us brothers, whereverpeople are.

The devil hates the brotherhoodof the saints. He does not care aboutyou, me, or anybody else makingit in serving God. The devil does notcare about making trouble in acongregation. The devil does not

care about breaking up your home.He does not care about tearing apartanything that you have that is goingwell for God in your life. The devilwill try to kill your influence. Ithank God that he cannot touch thesaints unless God gives himpermission.

Some people have a strongtemptation to denounce and con-demn others without showing loveand mercy. A judgmental spirit candrive a man to brand almost every-one as a hypocrite or a false prophetexcept himself and his group. Hethinks that no one is right buthimself.

Some people nowadays do notwant to go to any church. I fear theyare going to wake up in hell, be-cause God ordained that we sit un-der a pastor. That is God's plan, notman's idea. God uses a pastor as aninstrument to feed souls. Some peo-ple want to wander around fromchurch to church. They say, "I don'thave a pastor; I'm just free." Godnever intended that. They are out ofthe will of God when they do that. Now, it is different if people areliving away some place where theydo not have a true congregation toattend. I am not talking about that, but I am talking about people whoare floating around from congrega-tion to congregation and just ignorethe Word of God.

The best way to disarm yourenemies is to show them a betterspirit. You see, I am not responsiblefor how you treat me, but I am re-sponsible for how I treat you. Peoplemay spit on me, slap me, cheat me,and step all over me; however, theyare going to stand before God forthat. I am responsible only for howI treat others. God wants us to havethe right respect and love for allpeople.

A judgmental attitude mighthave zeal, but it is not according toknowledge. One who has such anattitude does not have the right spir-it. The Apostle Paul wrote inRomans 10:1-3: "Brethren, my heart'sdesire and prayer to God for Israelis, that they might be saved. For I

bear them record that they have azeal of God, but not according toknowledge. For they being ignorantof God's righteousness, and goingabout to establish their own righ-teousness, have not submitted them-selves unto the righteousness ofGod." If you are a pastor, youshould be able to preach the Truthwithout denouncing another person. You must preach with respect.

Wise men follow God andpreach with respect. When respectbreaks down, fellowship breaksdown with it. God knows that noteveryone will see everything alike.Nevertheless, He wants us to mani-fest the right spirit toward one an-other and to have the right attitude. You and your spouse do not seeeverything alike, even if you havebeen living together for twenty yearsor longer. The most important thingis to have the right spirit and theright attitude. Remember the samejudgment that you put on others isgoing to come right back to you. Iam not saying that you should giveup one thing that you honestly be-lieve is true. You ought to hold toyour convictions and live by them. However, you must guard yourspirit toward others. We do not haveit made yet.

Judgment Day will deal withsin. If you do not know Christ, youare missing something. Ecclesiastes12:13-14 states: "Let us hear the con-clusion of the whole matter: FearGod, and keep his commandments:for this is the whole duty of man.For God shall bring every work intojudgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it beevil."

Second Corinthians 10:10-11reads: "For his letters, say they, areweighty and powerful; but his bod-ily presence is weak, and his speechcontemptible. Let such an one thinkthis, that, such as we are in word byletters when we are absent, such willwe be also in deed when we arepresent." You need to watch andguard your spirit.

He Will Not Fail Thee

Come what may, come any kind of trial or difficulty— no such thing can happen by chance. "It

is the Lord, when anything of the sort befalls God's children. It comes by His permission or

appointment, and He means to turn it into a blessing— com e even the darkest moments and

the most trying events, well, what then? Why this? He whispers, and means it, we may be sure,

"I will Not fail thee!" Oh, it is grand! He knows our every need besides. In persevering with the work,

He has given us to do, we have this all-sufficing word, "He will not fail thee!" So with all, He will never

forget us, no, or even for a single moment. Not an anxiety, or a pain, or even a "faint feeling," He will

be near. "He will not fail thee," implies and involves all that His heart can prompt, and His right hand

do for us. Then, Alelulia! and again, Alelulia! We should not—need not— have one single dark m isgiving,

or doubting thought. On the contrary, remembering His promise, "I will not fail thee," let us go onward,

rejoicing, gratefully, confidently, as He leads us, step by step, in the right way. Let Him see the response

in our lives, amid circumstances of every sort and kind, "I w ill trust and not be afraid."
