Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More January 22nd, 2017

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Over the next few Sundays, we will hear the early stages of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee. In the Gospel reading for today, Matthew situates the start of Jesus’ public ministry within the context of an Old Testament prophetic fulfillment. After his temptation with the devil in the desert, Jesus “withdrew” to Galilee, as it was no longer safe for him to remain in Judea after the arrest and imprisonment of John the Baptist. Jesus chose not to live in his hometown of Nazareth; rather, he “went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.” Matthew provides no additional information as to why Jesus left Nazareth, aside from this fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 8:23 (today’s first reading). Matthew signals the start of Jesus public ministry with the statement, “From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” These are the exact words with which Matthew summarizes John the Baptist’s preaching (3:2). Matthew was careful to preserve the eschatological (eschaton meaning “end-time”) orientation of John and Jesus. Both were convinced that God was acting in Israel’s history in a new and final way. The Gospel reading also includes Matthew’s version of the call of the first disciples. Matthew follows Mark almost word-for-word in this rather uneventful first encounter between Jesus and the five fishermen. Jesus simply says to Simon and Peter and Andrew, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” He then invites James and John with the same message. Matthew reports that both sets of brothers reacted the same way: they left their nets and their boats and followed Jesus. Their unconditional and unquestioning response to Jesus’ call aligns well with what Jesus will tell the crowds later in his ministry on the conditions for discipleship (see Mt 10:37-39).
