From the Desk of Father Jonathan

Earlier this Summer I encouraged all of you to take some time away from your ordinary places of living and work, or if that’s not possible, at least to change up your daily routine for a few days. Our souls, minds, and bodies need rest and restoration! That’s what I’m doing this week, and it’s glorious!! I am spending some time in God’s country—as they call it here—in the Aspen mountains of Colorado. I’m not much of an outdoorsman, but I do love to fish, hunt, and camp when I can. My Dad loved fly fishing and passed that love on to my brothers and me. Yesterday, as I stood in a cold river, waist high, with the mountains behind me, and all alone, I pulled out my cell phone from a waterproof sack and called my Dad. I told him I had my fly rod in hand and was trying to bait a beautiful brook or rainbow trout to jump on my line....just as he taught us. And that’s what happened! It was a moment when I also experienced God’s presence and a reminder that the universe does not revolve around Washington, DC politics, NYC media, Vatican intrigue, my personal challenges....or anything other than God himself. As much as I am loving it here, I’m sure I will soon be ready to come back to our beloved Bronx, where, happily, God has called me to work and live alongside of all of you. If I don’t return....don’t take it personally...it only means I ran into a big Black Bear!!! You can be sure of my many prayers for you and your family. I count on yours.

God bless, Father Jonathan

+ REST IN PEACE + Please pray for Gloria Tocci, Michael Pirozzi, and all the faithful departed

MESE DEL S. ROSARIO

MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY

MES DEL SANTO ROSARIO

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to be-come catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ire-land, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cot-tages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws for-bade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threat-ened their faith.

KNOW THE ANGELS Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit. Without being seen, they are present with you. —St.
