It is hard to imagine the total destruction of 65,000 peoples homes and livelihood. St. Johns Abbey and St. Benedicts monastery have close connections with the Bahamian people. There are presently Bahamian students studying at CSB SJU. Perhaps you might want to reach out to these students and invite them to the parish. Through them we might be able to send a gift that would reach several families. Could some families invite a student for a meal or a home stay? I am hoping to take a vacation next month so please hold of dying or needing sacramental absolution for your sins. —Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

Growing in Faith Catechetical Sunday The mission of the church reflects the mission of Jesus to teach, preach, heal, and forgive. The church continues this mission in all its ministries, but especially, and perhaps most importantly, through catechesis. The task of handing on the Gospel is entrusted to the whole community, who by word and example, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. Parish programs assist parents in teaching the basics of faith through liturgical experience, instruction, and faith formation. This ministry is essential for the parish to grow, for individuals to develop as believers, and for the ongoing spiritual formation of the whole community. It reminds the church that preaching the Gospel and growing in faith are essential to our sacramental practice and our liturgical prayer. On Sunday, September 22nd our parish will recognize, commission and bless those who are called to the ministry of catechesis. Faith Formation Registration Forms If you have not turned in your registration, please do so ASAP. The deadline was August 30th. Class lists etc. for grades 1-11 will be compiled and completed by Monday, September 16th. All forms must be in before September 16th. Thank you. Confirmation Candidates Reminder: Your “Sponsor Consent and Information Form” needs to be turned in no later than Friday, September, 13, 2019

Annual Report — Fiscal Year 2018-2019

Church of

SAINT JOSEPH

Comments/Notes

Income—Sunday Offering has been under budget. The ‘Close the Gap’ campaign brought in additional funds from generous donors to reduce the difference tremendously.

Expenses—All expenses have been closely managed and most fall under budget.

Cash Flow—This has tightened considerably over the last two years. Emergency cash reserves have been used.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

To all event chairs, committee members, stand chairs, volunteers, attendees—and parishioners who kept the festival in your prayers—THANK YOU for your support! Despite the 4th of July rain, the festival was a financial success! We are $33,351.41 ahead of the budgeted amount for the festival. This event is a mainstay in the St. Joseph Community and will continue! Planning for the 2020 festival will begin in the coming weeks.

Thank you!—From Concert Chair

After 15 years as Concert Committee Chair and 7 years as a Chair of the Festival Committee, I am retiring from these positions. In doing so, I say “Thank you” to all the hard-working parishioners who have made our Parish Festival the biggest and best church festival in Minnesota. We all owe a great deal of gratitude to ahe members of the Concert Committee, especially to the ones who have been on the committee the entire 15 years. They are Larry Christen, Doug Danielson, Steve Heymans, Sandy Scholz, Darla Schwegel and Jeff Velline. I owe a special “Thank you” to Mark Leither and the set-up crew. They are so efficient in set-up and take-down it’s almost unbelievable. The Festival Stand Chairs have also done an incredible job. Regardless of how many volunteers they were short, they always managed to maintain a high level of service and take care of the thousands of people who attended our event. Of course, thank you to all the volunteers that worked in the stands year after year. I’ve received many compliments over the years on how friendly and courteous the stand workers were. Again, thank you all and God bless.

SJCS Annual Year End Report 2019

St. Joseph Catholic School (SJCS) has completed another suc-cessful school year while implementing several significant changes. St. Joseph Catholic School went through a name change, the launching of a new major fundraiser, the implemen-tation of new curriculum, adapting our preschool program, and working with the other Catholic Community Schools (CCS) in creating a new school Catholic school district in the St. Cloud area. In the spring of 2018, the All Saints Academy Board decided that the ASA - St. Joseph Campus should be renamed “St. Joseph Catholic School”. Rebranding of the school began in the summer of 2018 and throughout the year with the school redesigned its website, used marketing to build name recognition, and created materials with its new name and logo. Because of the rebranding of the St. Joseph Catholic School, it was also decided that the school needed to have its own signature fund-raiser. A fundraising committee was created, and they decided on an Oktoberfest type event and the first “Rocktoberfest” was planned and held in September 2018. The new fundraiser appeals to all ages and celebrates the area’s German heritage with traditional German music, food, and music. The first year of Rocktoberbest was very successful with over 600 attendees. Rocktoberfest 2019 will be Satur-day, September 28 starting at 4:00pm. Standardized math test scores have been improving over the last several years and our test results this year were outstanding. On aver-age, SJCS students scored at about the 80% meaning that SJCS students are in the top 20% nationally. This was also the second year of offering qualifying students a chance to advance a grade level in math with several students participating in 7th grade math. The school’s Montessori preschool program continues it strong tradition of being a premier preschool in the area and has been licensed for all-day preschool for the past two years. Enrollment continues to be strong and most openings are filled for the 2019-20 school year. SJCS also continues to work with seven other area elementary Catholic schools and Cathedral High School in forming Catholic Commu-nity Schools (CCS). It is a difficult but necessary undertaking to ensure Catholic education remains a strong and viable option for fami-lies in Central Minnesota. Although SJCS has had many successes, there are still challenges that lay ahead. Enrollment for the last several years for the Kindergar-ten through 6th grade has remained consistent but lower than desired with the trend of more 5th graders leaving the school to attend an area 6th through 8th grade middle school. Financially, All Saints Academy Corporation, of which SJCS is a member, ended the year with a positive balance. With the funds gener-ated by grants and donations, SJCS has been able to purchase the next generation of SMART Boards as well as robotic kits and new computers. SJCS faculty and staff received inflationary pay increases, and St. Joseph Parish subsidy is less now than it was 10 years ago. However, finances will always need to be closely watched and scrutinized so that the school operates as efficiently as possible. School operations are continually being evaluated to find ways to maximize resources while providing an excellent Catholic education. SJCS continues to provide services for students with dyslexia. We have seen positive gains for these students with the help of qualified Barton tutors. The teachers are in year two of writing and implementing their reading and writing targets and scales with the goal of bet-tering students’ reading and writing skills. St. Joseph Catholic School has had a successful year in serving students and providing a high quality education. We are well positioned to face future challenges with the help of staff, parents, parishioners, alumni and the greater community. If you have any questions or wish to talk to me, contact me at (320) 363-7505 x 151 or [email protected].

If the street by the Legion is barricaded, volunteers can move the barricade for those who need to enter the parking lot for handicap accessibility. Gospel Reflection for September 15th

“I will rise and go to my father!”

The readings for this Sunday all speak about the theme of for-giveness and God’s mercy. In the first reading Moses pleads with God not to punish the Israelites for their stubbornness and wor-ship of false gods. And God did not punish them. In the second reading Paul acknowledges that God has forgiven him for his for-mer life and entrusted him to preach to the people whom he had formerly persecuted. In the Gospel Jesus tells three parables about finding what was lost and the joy that is experienced over sinners coming back to him.

How would you respond to the son coming back to the Father? Would you react joyfully, like the father did, or would you react like the elder son and be unhappy with the Father’s response?

This week take some quiet time to reflect on your life. In what ways have you turned against Jesus? Is it through gossip, criti-cism of others, selfishness or pride? Are you taking time for pray-er and participating at the Sunday Eucharist? Go to God for for-giveness and experience his mercy.
