Sunday in Ordinary Time
For the Sanctification of Human Labor
Orations for Labor Day: September 2
In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m explaining some
revised Roman Missal orations that are not
on a Sunday. May our
reflections on these
theologically rich, deep, beautiful Mass orations, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in FAITH! Since this is the
first Labor Day since the Church added the words,
“with “blessed Joseph, her Spouse,” to all the Eucharistic Prayers, I thought I’d highlight Saint
Joseph’s other role as patron of all workers.
For the Sanctification of Human Labor - Collect
O God, Creator of all things, who have commanded the human race to bear the burden of labor, grant that the work we are beginning
may bring progress in this life and, by your favor, advance the spread of the Kingdom of Christ.
Work: a Blessing or a Curse? Some say the need to ‘work for a living’ is a curse since God told Adam as He expelled our sinful first parents from the Garden of Eden: “Cursed is the ground because of you! In toil you shall eat its yield all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles it shall bear for you, and you shall eat the grass of the field. By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” {Genesis 3:17b-19] However, Christians must see all things, even the need to ‘get a job’ through the prism of Jesus Christ!
By becoming a human person who lived within a human family, as the foster son of a carpenter, whose ‘business’ He took over, Jesus restored every aspect of human life, even human labor, to its original divine plan! The Collect on Labor Day reminds us that God did not make us to be simply ‘takers’ or ‘receivers,’ but also ‘givers’ or doers!’ As the Catholic Catechism [#307] states: we are co-creators with God, freely sharing in the work of bringing His creation to completion!
Sanctification of Human Labor – Prayer over the Offerings
O God, who in the offerings presented here nourish the human race with food
and renew it with your Sacrament, grant, we pray, that the sustenance they provide
may not fail us in body or in spirit,
Body & Spirit. Catholic Social Teaching was ‘born,’ if you will, after Holy Mother Church endured centuries of intense ‘labor pains.’ [Puns intended!] In 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued his historic encyclical, ‘Rerum Novarum,’ which addressed the rights and duties of employers and employees: in short: a just wage for a just day’s work. Since we are both body and soul, the Church must address both temporal and spiritual matters. And she has consistently taught that business and labor must simultaneously work toward two goals: earth and heaven, the here-and-now and eternity,
The Church also insists that all dealings between employers and employees be: ethical and moral; rooted in honesty; geared toward the common good, not selfish desires; safeguarded by accountability and personal responsibility. Does not the dismal failure of communism, the pain caused by unbridled capitalism, and the on-going world economic meltdown prove Holy Mother Church correct? No wonder this Labor Day oration asks for heavenly help in dealing with earthly matters!
Sanctification of Human Labor – Prayer After Communion
Having been made partakers of this table of unity and charity, we beseech your mercy, Lord,
that through the work you have given us to do we may sustain our life on earth
and trustingly build up your Kingdom.
Two Goals: Earth and Heaven. Again, the Church’s view of our purpose is to ‘sustain our life [and everyone else’s life] on earth’ and to ‘build up {God’s] Kingdom.’ Each time we are guests at the Lord’s Table, we are commissioned to be a sign of, and to work for, ‘unity and charity.’ What does this mean?
First, we must discern what it is God has called us to be and to do, which we come to know by prayer and by putting into action whatever traits and talents with which we believe God has gifted us. Then we work together, as one family, with the strength God gives us through
the Sacraments, to gradually bring His creation to its fulfillment in Christ! Are you doing the work God has in mind for you?
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

WHY ST. MARY CHILDREN’S CHOIR?By Andrea Covais
It’s that time of year again and children’scalendars are filling up with a host of activitiesfor the school year. Is it really possible to add
one more thing to the list? Children’s Choir is one of themost wonderful additions to any schedule and does notinvolve a huge time commitment. We meet for an houra week (Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30pm in church) forrehearsal and sing on Sundays at the 10:30am Mass aswell as special occasions such as Christmas Eve, EasterSunday, and other Holy days. But what makes Children’sChoir special? First, children are given the opportunity tomake new friends, learn positive social andcommunication skills, learn the benefits of volunteering, build self confidence, and share their musical talents inan enjoyable environment. The choir performs concertsthroughout the year and children are given theopportunity to sing at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart inNewark, a fun and inspiring experience for all involved.Second, the children are actively engaged in the liturgy, not passive participants of the congregation, but fullparticipants in the Mass each week. This encourages agreater understanding and love for the Mass. Finally, Iam often asked why a child should join our church choirif they are already in a chorus at school. Children’s Choiris the one place children learn not only about music butalso about their faith at the same time. Music is thevessel with which they learn about God’s manymysteries and lessons and this you will not findanywhere else. What a great way to enhance a child’slove for the Lord while making memories that will last alifetime! Please email me at [email protected] more information. Membership is open for childrenin grades 2 through 8.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEFirst Reading: Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29Those who are humble will find favor with God. Everyoneshould realize that there is much we can learn from eachother. Even the most knowledgeable people need to behumble enough to know that they can still learn from others.Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24aThe Hebrews are informed that they are not approaching anuntouchable mountain etched with gloom and fear. Rather, they have neared "the city of the living God, Jerusalem." TheHebrews have approached a joyful gathering of angels, Godour judge, and Jesus, who brought us a new covenant.Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14Jesus went to share a meal with one of the leading Phariseeswhen he noticed other guests competing for places of honorat the table. He warned that a guest who takes the place ofhonor may be asked to move to the lowest place. Yet a guestwho takes the lowest place is honored when a betterposition is offered by their host. He then added, "He whohumbles himself will be exalted."

RESPECT LIFE!
Every human being, at every stage and condition, is willed and
loved by God. For this reason, every human life is sacred. To
deprive someone of life is a grave wrong and a grave dishonor to
God. Because we are created in the image of God, who is Love,
our identity and our vocation is to love. Pope Benedict has called
this “the key to our entire existence.” ~ USCCB Respect Life Program flyer (2010
