Join the Spirit Day Mass Choir! Each year on Spirit Day all activities stop at 5:00PM and we celebrate the Eucharist as a faith community. It is a great gathering of our St. Anne’s community, filled with the Spirit!

This year we would like to form a “Spirit Day Choir”! Why not join your voice to the Mass on that day? It is just for Spirit Day with one rehearsal the week before on Tuesday, Sept. 13th from 7:30 – 9:00 in Church and one rehearsal on Spirit Day before Mass. Everyone is welcome – individuals and families! You do not have to have a trained voice – just the voice that God gave you! Do you play an instrument and would like to play? Bring your instrument to the rehearsal!

Please contact Sr. Judy at [email protected], or Tim Brown at [email protected] or at the parish office (352-5904).

Dear Parishioners,

With the arrival of Labor Day next Monday, although the calendar measures another three weeks of summer, most of us mark next Monday as the end of summer. For the parish, the atmosphere will change next week as about 540 students fill the classrooms of our school. Soon to follow will be the 900 or so students who will participate in our faith formation program.

For many years these vital ministries of our parish school and faith formation program have thrived under the leadership of our Faith Formation Director Lyn Beck and our School Principal, Dr. Bill O’Sullivan. Both Lyn and “Dr. O” announced their retirements at the end of the last school year. Both have remained graciously helpful in the transition to a time of new leadership.

As announced last spring, Mr. Gene Fennell has accepted the position of Principal at St. Anne’s Parish School. As we were blessed to have Dr. O’Sullivan lead us these past ten years, we are blessed to have welcomed Mr. Fennell as our new principal. He brings 32 years of experience in Catholic education as a teacher, administrator, coach, and principal.

Mr. Fennell was welcomed to Catholic School ministry at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School by our beloved former pastor Msgr. John Seidenschwang. Mr. Fennell has been hard at work this past month preparing our school to open its doors next week. He has welcomed several new students and several new faculty members. Already we have experienced his good cheer, friendliness, and warmth. St. Anne’s is acclaimed in our diocese. Catholic High School principals repeatedly speak of the excellent preparation of our graduates. The time of welcoming a new principal is an exciting one. We are excited about Mr. Fennell’s leadership of our Catholic parish school.

Lyn Beck has been part of St. Anne’s all her life. For the past six years, Lyn has ministered as Faith Formation Director with great commitment and love. Lyn is committed to our faith and to our parish. Lyn loves the children of the community. In late spring Lyn determined that she now wants to focus on other important persons of her life, particularly grandchildren, and she “retired” from her position as DRE. “Retired” because Lyn will remain an active parishioner.

Faith Formation of children is a tremendous task and responsibility. Catechists are the backbone of a parish faith formation program because they are the first helpers of parents in shaping religious values and practices of young children. As we say at Baptism, “parents are the first teachers in the ways of faith.” Catechists support the work and responsibility of parents.

For our Faith Formation program, part of the parish responsibility is to provide leadership to help parents and students and to assist catechists. At St. Anne’s we have established a new Faith Formation leadership team. It is comprised of lay people, staff members, clergy, and religious all of whom will share in this important ministry. We will all take different responsibilities so that we can give particular attention to different parts of the Faith Formation effort.

Organizing and administering the program is a major task. I have asked Mrs. Vivian Flood a long time parishioner of St. Anne’s to organize and administer the Faith Formation program. Vivian was a student in the Faith Formation program and her four children have celebrated their sacraments here. Vivian fully appreciates the parent and family perspective. Vivian knows the complexity of balancing all the family activities and giving attention to the faith formation and practice of children. Vivian will often be the first face and welcome of Faith Formation here at St. Anne’s. She will answer parent questions, recruit volunteer catechists, address scheduling difficulties, offer support and assistance in many different ways. Vivian loves St. Anne’s and is a familiar face to many. Having a faith formation leader who loves her parish and loves children is a tradition here at St. Anne’s. Please welcome and support Vivian in this role.

Trish Brodersen has offered strong administrative support to the program. Trish will continue in her role. Trish knows the “ins and outs” of the administration of the program. She will be of great support to Vivian and will continue to assist catechists, students, and parents. I am confident that Vivian will bring some new ideas in her ministry and will continue to maintain the strong tradition of welcome that marks life here at St. Anne’s in Faith Formation and all ministries.

We are not asking Vivian to replace Lyn. Instead, we have a team of persons who will lead the First Communion preparation and the Confirmation program. We will have grade coordinators and we will liturgically guide the children in class Masses. We will have parent meetings, guest speakers, and retreat days. Lots happens in faith formation. We hope that in a shared leadership experience our children and families will continue to be well served with some new ideas and approaches because we will have a greater input from additional parishioners and staff persons.

New experiences bring excitement and change. Obviously for a successful school and faith formation program, we need supportive families. We need children to attend Mass. We need parents who support and participate in service activities. We need faith-filled volunteer catechists and teachers. We need parish staff who understand that the care and formation of children is part of the core mission of a parish.

This new academic and faith formation year our parish families will meet and work with new leaders. Soon our young families will meet Mr. Fennell and Mrs. Flood. Please give them a warm welcome and support in their new endeavors. I am sure you will.

Sincerely in Christ,

FAITH FORMATION

A Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of

the Immaculate Conception

Christ in Majesty—Located in the North Apse of the Basilica, this mosaic is one of the largest of Christ in the world at 3610 square feet. It contains 3.5 million tesserae of mosaic in 3,000-4,000 total shades of color, 300 of which are shades of red and 200 of which are shades of gold. On the day of dedication, November 20, 1959, this mosaic was the only interior ornamentation of the Upper Church. This is a Byzantine representation of Christ—the Apocalyptic Christ who comes as the absolute reproving Lord and final judge (raised right eyebrow) and with the love and compassion of the Good Shepherd (relaxed left eyebrow). The scarlet cloak signifies Christ as the Redeemer. The span between Christ’s hands (of his outstretched arms which reach out to embrace the world and which are in a position of prayer) is 34 feet across. The span of each hand is five feet across, while the span from his chin to hairline is 7 feet tall.

On Saturday, September 24th you have an opportunity to see this beautiful mosaic as part of our Diocesan pilgrimage for the Year of Mercy. Saint Anne’s is offering a bus for our parishioners. The bus will leave St. Anne’s at 5:45AM and return after the closing Mass at 4:15PM. We will have the opportunity to walk through the Holy Door and receive a plenary indulgence for this Year of Mercy.

Contact Sister Judy at the parish office – 352-5904 or [email protected].

“Rather when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

blessed indeed will you be.” ~Luke 14: 13-14

As the children prepare to return to school, this gospel is quite an appropriate one for them to take with them. Reaching out to others, especially those who might seem to be left out of the banquet of friendship, is a kindness. More importantly it is a reward that will benefit them for years to come. Learning to put others above themselves is an experience which will be returned to them over and over.

High School Students Needed in Faith Formation Teens can help by becoming classroom teachers or aides, or instructors in the Sunday One-on-One program. (High school students who choose to teach a class will have a co-teacher.) Also, teens can serve as hall monitors on class days. What a great way to offer service while impacting the faith development of young parishioners. High school students who have previously participated by assisting at Faith Formation, please e-mail or call to confirm your continued participation. If you are interested or would like more information, please e-mail [email protected] or call 488-1032.

Teachers and Teacher Aides Needed No matter your age or your experience with teaching young people, St. Anne’s could use you in the Faith Formation program. All that is needed is faith and a willingness to share it. Assistance with curriculum, planning classes, and classroom management will be happily provided and you, like many before you, will find that it is not only a rewarding ministry but one that deepens your own faith. Even if you have a slight interest, please call the office and ask questions (488-1032). Guaranteed that it will be a blessing.

Faith Formation Office Hours During the summer months, the Faith Formation staff will be checking into the office on an occasional basis.

If you would like to reach us, please e-mail [email protected]

or leave a message at 488-1032 and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

LITURGY AND WORSHIP

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled , but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

When we attend a wedding banquet the first thing we usually do is look for a place card for seating according to the guests’ relationship to the couple. At Jesus’ wedding banquet all are called to hear and heed his call to be humble, inclusive and generous, to sit in the one place of honor. This place is not a limited space, a single seat. It is the wide and generous spacious relationship to Jesus that is a share in his Life. We look forward to the heavenly banquet and are reminded of it each Sunday as we share in the banquet of the Eucharist, nourishing us to live humbly, inclusively and generously.

Readings for the Twenty-Third Sunday in

Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament is available to those who are ill, bringing God’s healing and strength. Anointing of the Sick is especially appropriate for anyone with serious illness, whether physical, emotional or spiritual, those who are being admitted to the hospital, or anyone who is elderly. In this sacrament, Jesus asks, “Do you want to be healed?” Through this sacrament, God offers us the gift of peace.

RCIA - Perhaps you have been thinking bout becoming a

baptized member of the Catholic Church, perhaps you have been baptized a Christian and now would like to become a member of the Catholic Church, perhaps you have not received all the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, then perhaps the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is for you!

The RCIA is a process, a journey of faith. It is about people, people on the move, people being remade in the image of Christ and reborn in the Spirit, people on a journey toward faith. Through this gradual, and comprehensive process individuals are trained in the Christian way of life, come to know Jesus Christ through the Catholic community and learn to live as Jesus’ disciples, continuing the mission of Jesus Christ in the world today.

We will be beginning a new session of RCIA at the beginning of October. We are blessed to have number of women and men who will be exploring the Catholic Faith with us this year. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about our Faith please contact Sister Judy at [email protected] or call 516-352-5904 for more information.
