+ My dear parishioners and friends: Happy Mother’s Day to all our amazing Moms! I know that, like everything else these past few months, it will not be the Mother’s Day traditions that we all have, but COVID-19 has inspired us to think creatively about new ways to relate to our old normals. Please know that I am pray-ing in a very special way for our mothers this weekend. As I was thinking about my column, I found that Cardinal Tobin and Kathy and John Foley have so perfectly stated the two ideas I want to share with you on two separate topics that I decided to let them both speak in their own respective voices. First, Cardinal Tobin, as he explains the five reasons we turn to Mary, our Blessed Mother, in times of trouble:

Pope Francis has frequently said that his favorite image for the Church is her motherhood. “The Church is feminine,” Pope Francis says. “She is a mother.” That’s why we should turn to Mary in both good times and troubled times . . . especially in times of grave danger, such as the current pandemic, Mary offers hope, healing and comfort to all who are in need of her maternal care.

People are sick and dying. Throughout the Church’s history, Christians have sought Mary’s intercession in times of seri-ous illness including pestilence and plagues. As a loving mother, Mary always responds with comfort and the heal-ing grace of her Son.

People are frightened, lonely and depressed. Mary’s loving presence offers courage and hope during frightening times, especially when we are isolated from family and friends. She reassures us and reminds us that we are never alone, never without the consolation and hope won for us by her Son’s suffering, death and resurrection to new life.

People are out of work or afraid they will lose their jobs. Mary is alternately invoked as Our Lady of Abundance and as Mother of the Poor. She stands with us when the economy is growing and when there is widespread poverty and un-employment. She reminds us to be good stewards of all God’s gifts and to share generously with others, especially the poor.

People are longing for the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Mary shows us the way to her Son. She is a sacrament of God’s presence in the world, the Gateway to Grace and a model for the Church’s prayer and worship. Deprived of access to the sacraments, and to liturgy cum populo (with our sisters and brothers), we understandably turn to Mary in the Rosary and other devotional prayers to help fill the spiritual gaps that exist in our lives.

People need wise, prudent and compassionate leadership—now more than ever. Mary is the Mother of the Good Shep-herd. His teaching and example powerfully illustrate the meaning and vital importance of servant leadership. We implore the Mother of our Lord to help all our leaders in society and in the Church set aside their personal and po-litical agendas so that they can place the needs of others first and foremost.

My second point was to mention the motherly and loving care that our parish has shown to all those struggling as a result of the Caronavirus. Once again, Kathy and John Foley stated it best in this email I just received from them: St. Elizabeth's is an amazing parish!! We received such a tremendous response to the plea for food donations for Oasis last Sunday. There was a steady stream of generous people dropping off bags and boxes to our front porch (with social distancing of course!) throughout most of the day such that our garage was filled to capacity. It looked like there was as much as when the monthly food collection filled the hallway with bags back in the day when we could go to the church. We had so much that we loaded two SUVs with roof carriers and then had to illicit the help of a large Market Basket truck to take the rest of the donations down to Oasis. A big shout out to Sue Buchanan for helping us transport everything! Oasis was so touched by the enormity of the donations and was very appreciative. This experience is living proof that our church is not just the walls of our beautiful church, but is about our community. God's love runs deep and is present in the hearts of all of the people. May I say that your mothers would be very proud of you this Mother’s Day weekend! Your heav-enly mother, Mary, is very proud of you! The CVS team is in awe of you! Yours in the Risen Lord! Alleluia! Alleluia!!
