6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Special Collects: For Civil Needs

Some from both sides of the aisle ask why we pray at Mass for our civil leaders, especially those

who seemingly ignore or contradict Gospel values and Church teaching. Did not Jesus show respect and submit to the authority of the spineless Pontius Pilate and the flamboyant Herod Antipas, son of the Herod from whom Mary and Joseph fled but never railed against? If the Holy Family submitted to those who had authority over them for our brief time here on earth, should not we?

We also pray for civic leaders to fulfill Saint Paul’s mandate: “I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.” [1 Timothy 2:1-2]

While Saints Paul or Peter usually disagreed with their civil leaders, they knew they needed them to promote the Gospel. The Bible states Paul went to Rome to appeal his arrest for being a Christian directly to Caesar, with whom Paul would disagree on most things; Peter also went to Rome, presumably to do the same. They were both martyred in Rome by order of civil authorities. Following their example, we must also pray for our leaders, and be willing to suffer the consequences when we oppose them!

Since the main purpose of every holy Mass is to praise God, especially for all He has done for us in Jesus Christ, only the Collect or what we once called the Opening Prayer focuses entirely on earthly matters; the Prayer over the Offerings and the Prayer after Communion make no mention of civil authorities. These orations, taken from any Mass, mention what God offers us through Christ, with Christ and in Christ!

For the Head of State or Ruler - Collect

O God, to whom every human power is subject, grant to your servant (our president, sovereign) N.

success in the exercise of his (her) high office, so that, always revering you and striving to please you, he (she) may constantly secure and preserve

for the people entrusted to his (her) care the freedom that comes from civil peace.

No Justice, No Peace; Know Justice, Know Peace. This creative play-on-words has a firm biblical basis, for the Scriptures often note that justice and peace go hand-in-hand. As long as anyone’s rights are ignored or dismissed: the unborn or unwanted, the unemployed or underemployed, as well as those blessed with world resources: the successful and the well-off; until everyone’s God-given dignity and basic human rights are affirmed, protected and promoted, there will be no peace! So we rightfully pray that our civil leaders will help us to find that perfect balance between ‘the haves’ and ‘the have-nots;’ the rich and the poor; the industrious and the lazy; the privileged and the challenged; the native and the immigrant; the young and old, the healthy and infirm; those here legally and those who entered illegally; the saint and the sinner. The list goes on and on …

For Those in Public Office - Collect

Almighty ever-living God, in whose hand lies every human heart and

the rights of peoples, look with favor, we pray, on those who govern with authority over us,

that throughout the whole world the prosperity of peoples, the assurance of peace,

and freedom of religion may through your gift be made secure.

We Need Heavenly Aid to Establish Justice on Earth. As this alternative Collect for invoking God’s blessing on earthly leaders states, every human right, as well as peace and justice, come from God. So we must first seek FROM God what we need to implement on earth. For as the Apostle says, “all good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.” [James 1:17] And as history has shown, every human effort to create a more perfect world WITHOUT divine help has failed. Even WITH God’s grace the road to peace and justice is not easy, but it is doomed to fail unless we follow the heavenly compass instilled within us: our conscience. And since our conscience is weakened by sin, we cannot rely totally on our own hopes and dreams. We MUST follow God’s plan to succeed!

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Did you know that the Knights of Columbus is the largest

Catholic Men's organization in the world? There are other

similar Catholic organizations in this country as well as abroad.

For example, there are similar men's organizations in Ireland and

England. The men in these groups are also called Knights, as the

Knights of Saint Columbanus in Ireland and the Knights of Saint

Columba in England, Scotland and Wales. These later two

organizations were founded just after WWI. The Catholic men

of Ireland and England were so impressed by the Knights of

Columbus that they met while the "Doughboys" were in the

British Isles that they formed their own groups to emulate the

Knights from the United States. The Knights of Columbus in

America were founded in 1882 by the Venerable Servant of God,

Father Michael J. McGivney. The Knights of Columbus are

located in over Fourteen Countries worldwide, including Poland,

the home of Blessed John Paul II. For more information and

details about the Knights, who we are and what we do, contact

Bill Teresavage at (201) 935-7308 or at [email protected] or

visit two of the K of C websites at www.kofc.org or

www.nkkofc.org.

An Urgent Need for Blood Donations

There is an urgent, critical need for volunteer blood donors as a

result of the current cold weather conditions and donors

canceling because of illness. According to Community Blood

Services of New Jersey, which supplies blood and blood

products to more than 18 hospitals in New Jersey, there is less

than a one-day supply on hand in our area to meet the needs of

patients. All eligible blood donors are asked to call 201-251-

3703 now to schedule appointments at one of Community Blood

Services donor centers to help rebuild the fragile supply. All

blood types are needed, but especially Type O negative. There

has been a continuing shortage of O negative blood donors

because they represent only 7% of the population. Type O

negative blood also is in most demand by hospitals because Type

O donors are "universal donors" whose blood can be transfused

into anyone in emergency rooms and trauma situations when

there is no time for blood typing.

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

"When I called, you answered"

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal has been a

traditional part of our parish outreach and charitable

contribution. Saint Mary HAS BEEN a leading parish in

the Archdiocese. Pledge envelopes are still available in

the Narthex. I hope that you will continue that tradition

by your participation this year. Thank you for your

prayerful consideration.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Sirach 15:15-20

This passage from Sirach gives strong, unequivocal emphasis to

free will in every person. Before each of us is set, sin or virtue,

life or death, and each of us are free to choose the one or the

other.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10

Paul explains to the Corinthians that there are two different kinds

of wisdom — the wisdom of God and the wisdom of the world.

The wisdom of God is mysterious, but this wisdom has been

revealed “to those who love him” through the Spirit.

Gospel: Matthew 5:17-37

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells the people he has come

to fulfill the law. He speaks strongly against murder and anger,

against adultery and lust, and against false oaths and lies. He

warns the people that unless their virtue exceeds that of the

Pharisees, they “will not enter the kingdom of God.”

burning of Palms' on Tuesday evening,

March 4th, please bring your old palm

the Rutherford Food Pantry and other charitable

needs. Food can be dropped off in the Narthex of
