Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16th, 2020Isa 56:1, 6-7 Rom 11:13-15, 29-32 Matthew 15:21-28

From the Desk of the Pastor

(Continued on page 3) (Continúa en la página 3)

An open door says, “Come in.”A shut door says, “Who are you?”

Shadows and ghosts go through shut doors. If a door is shut and you want it shut,

why open it?If a door is open and you want it open,

why shut it?Doors forget but only doors know what it is

doors forget.

Dear Parishioners,This 1958 poem by American poet, folksinger, biographer,

journalist and editor, Charles Sandburg, is hauntingly engaging for me. The poem seems to be asking me:

Did I want our Church building doors to shut after the 5:30pm Mass on Friday, March 13th? Do I want them now, slowly and gradually, to be re-opened?

I shout out: I would never, ever want to shut our Church doors! Yet, I wanted, no needed, to shut them to keep us all safe. Even now, do I want to open them? Yes indeed, but again only if we can all be kept safe.

So, while I want to shout out to all, “Come in,” I know better. It is best for now that almost like those “shadows and ghosts” many of you still come in through the livestream Masses, the Family Liturgy of the Word and our other online programs and Zoom meetings.

Who among us, though, having experienced the joy of celebrating physically together in community does not long for our doors to once again be open wide with no restrictions in total welcome.

When they do fully open, and they will sooner or later, we hope to have all 16 en-trance doors to our Church and the four into our parish front

long overdue. The wood for these doors is far too valuable and beautiful not to preserve and restore.

So, too, whenever you decide to return through our Church doors, you will be greeted through a new sound system. Why a new sound system you may ask? I asked that too. We need it because parts for our current sound system are no longer man-ufactured. Moreover, most of the frequency for our wireless microphone transmitters unfortunately have been gobbled up by a wireless giant. That corporation’s purchase renders our own wireless system vulnerable and unstable. Naturally, there will be many advantages to our new sound system. Among

them will be the ability to adjust the sound that is needed to be heard through the speakers inside the Church separately from the sound needed for simultaneous livestreaming.

Also, inside our doors when you personally determine it is -

only for screen confessions. They have been redesigned to al-low for the option of either screen confessions or face-to-face in keeping with Vatican II. Having to close our doors actually made it possible to do this renovation work in preparation for a bright, new future.

In addition, to the new chiller which we have already in-stalled for our air-conditioning, we should have two new boil-ers up and running for October.

I have taken the chance of moving all these projects for-ward for our parish in the hopes that you can help. Anything extra that you might be able to give in addition to your regular offering to help defray the cost of all these projects will be so greatly appreciated.

Like those poetic doors, perhaps we will forget in some way all the loneliness, sadness and pain of this time of separation in our history. Instead, we will joyfully appreciate those newly refurbished and restored doors saying, Welcome, Come In!

Always in hope,Fr. Joe

Joe

The Catholic Appeal

We Still Need a Few More Parishioners to Help Reach Our GoalEven in the midst of a global pandemic, service to others remains core to the work of our Church.

Anointing the sick. Serving our faith communities. Supporting our schools.

And so much more. As you know, your gift to the annual Catholic Appeal

helps supports this work. This year the Archdiocese helped us with guidance

and supplies to reopen our Church building as well as aid us in securing the

government loan needed to keep our employees on payroll. Each year your

generosity has helped us reach our Annual Appeal goal and as a result we re-

ceived a rebate. This year we need 126 donors in order to qualify for a rebate

in 2020. We simply need a few more donors. We recognize that some of you

may not but able to donate this year. If you are able, please prayerfully consider making a gift to

the 2020 Catholic Appeal to ensure that this critical work continues. To learn more about Your

Church at Work or to make a donation, visit: www.bostoncatholicappeal.org.

Thank you!

Notice:Dr. Anthony Compagnone, a parishioner and member of the Liturgy

Commission, has advised us that masks are effective ONLY if they cover both your nose and your mouth,

with a snug fit over the nasal bridge. This is the best way to prevent your respiratory droplets from

escaping into the space around you and onto others.

Further, he pointed out that recent studies have shown that, while valved masks may make it easier for

you to inhale, they are ineffective in preventing your exhaled breath from

contaminating the air around you.

Valved masks of any kind, therefore, will be prohibited for use during Mass at St. Ignatius. The Greeter

at your liturgy will happily provide you with an acceptable mask to wear as you enter the church. We also

ask that you wear your mask properly throughout the Mass.

This is for the safety of us all. We appreciate your cooperation.

-Fr. Joe
