The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ - C

Corpus Christi Memorial Day Weekend

In 1264, Pope Urban IV promulgated the feast we celebrate today, 752 years later, in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament of Christ’s

Body and Blood. Devotion to Jesus specifically in His Most Precious Blood was made popular by St. Gaspar del Bufalo [1786-1837; canonized 1954] who founded the Missionaries of the Most Precious Blood [MMPB], an Order whose Priests, Brothers and Lay Associates still serve throughout the world. The following orations may NOT be used today, but when holy Mass is offered in thanks for the Most Precious Blood poured out to redeem the world.

While the Solemnity of Corpus Christ, the MMPB and orations below come from the last 750 years of Church history, they’re all firmly rooted in Sacred Scripture. For, as the Bible attests, Our Lord shed His Most Precious Blood seven times: a number signifying perfect totality:

1] At His Circumcision [Luke 2:22] 2] In the Garden of Gethsemane when His sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. [Luke

22:44] 3] At His Scourging [Matthew 20:19.] 4] When Crowned with Thorns: [Mark 15:17] 5] As He carried His Cross 6] When He was Nailed to the Cross [In John 20:25-27 the Risen Lord invited

Thomas into put his finger into the nail holes.] 7] When, as Jesus lay in the sleep of death, His side was torn open by a soldier’s lance [John 19:34]

The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ Collect

O God, who by the Precious Blood of your Only Begotten Son have redeemed the

whole world, preserve in us the work of your mercy, so that, ever honoring the mystery of our

salvation, we may merit to obtain its fruits

BY HIS WOUNDS YOU WERE HEALED. Our

first Pope [1 Peter 2:24] quoted this ancient prophecy: “by his wounds we were healed” [Isaiah 53:5] to explain why Christ shed His Most Precious Blood so often. John’s detailed account of the seventh and last time Christ poured out His Blood, that blood and water flowed from Christ’s pierced side, was because He had given His last drop of Blood to save us … leaving only water!

The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ Prayer over the Offerings

As we offer our oblation to your majesty, O Lord, may we draw near in these mysteries to Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant,

and celebrate anew the sprinkling of his Blood, in which lies all our salvation.

CHRIST’S BLOOD TOPS ABEL’S BLOOD. After Cain killed Abel, God asked Cain “What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!” [Genesis 4:10]; then God punished Cain to avenge Abel’s blood. But when we killed God’s Only Begotten Son, His Most Precious Blood called out - not for vengeance - but for forgiveness and mercy! For in the New Covenant our Mediator willingly poured out His Most Precious Blood to redeem us. In the Eucharist Christ invites us to take and drink His Most Precious Blood so we can share in all He won for us. While we receive the whole Christ, body and blood, soul and divinity, by receiving EITHER His Sacred Body OR Precious Blood, receiving BOTH is a FULLER SIGN of His Sacramental Real Presence. Do you receive from the chalice, which I am proud to say we offer to the people at every Mass?

The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ Prayer after Communion

Refreshed, O Lord, by this saving food and drink we pray that we may always be bathed in the

Blood of our Savior, so that it may become for us a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

or:

Restored with heavenly food and drink, we beseech you, almighty God, to protect from fear of their enemies those you have redeemed

by the Precious Blood of your Son

WASHED IN AND FED BY CHRIST’S BLOOD. In the mysterious last book of the Bible we read: “[the Saints] have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” {Revelation 7:14] That’s why Baptismal gowns are

white, as is the pall or cloth that covers our casket and the alb or robe liturgical ministers wear. May the Most Precious Blood of Christ keep us all safe for eternal life!

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder

PARENTS GRIEVING THE DEATH OF A CHILD The needs of parents who have suffered the loss of a son or daughter are unique. The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors support groups for Parents Grieving the Death of a Child. The groups are led by trained facilitators - parents who have personally experienced the death of a child. Groups meet at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Parish Center, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ on the First Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm (July and August is 7:00pm) and at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Rectory Basement, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ on the Third Monday of each month at 7:30pm. There is no fee to participate and pre-registration is not needed. Please call the Office of Family Life Ministries at 973-497-4327 or email [email protected] for further information.

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST First Reading: Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, a priest of God, prayed that Abram would be blessed by God. He also praised God for delivering Abram's foes into his hands. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Paul describes Jesus' actions during the last supper. Jesus broke bread and said it was his body given for us, asking that we do the same in remembrance of him. He then passed the cup and called it his blood. Jesus then asked us to break bread in this manner to remember his death until he returns. Gospel: Luke 9:11b-17 Jesus spoke to a large crowd when his disciples asked that he dismiss the people to give them a chance to find food and lodging. Jesus asked the disciples to give the crowd something to eat, but they had only five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus then blessed and distributed the food, which fed about 5,000 people. Twelve baskets were then collected from what was left over.

FATHER’S DAY NOVENA “A Spiritual Gift”

Stop by Parish Office to inquire about your Spiritual Gift for your father, grandfather, uncle, godfather etc. Think about having them remembered at the Masses offered in Saint Mary on the Eve of Father’s Day and all the masses offered during the following week until the following Sunday. The names [both living and deceased] will remain in the Sanctuary during all masses and cards are available for you to give to those you’ve remembered. These names WILL NOT BE PRINTED in the bulletin. Why not enrich someone with these blessings this Father’s Day!

ONLINE BILL PAYMENT More & More parishioners are doing this!

There’s a handy, efficient way for you to address your church offerings. Many of us use the online bill payment process provided by most banks free of charge to remit these offerings. The advantages are: no mailing and printing charges for the parish, you don’t have to write checks, the bank will schedule the offering so you will never forget and there’s no “catch up” for the summer months. Should you decide to go electronic, your “account number” is the number found on your envelope, our address is on the bulletin along with our phone number.
