HANDMAIDS OF MARY The Franciscan Handmaids of Mary began feed-ing the hungry and those in need since 1926. This ministry is now known as St. Edward Food Pantry, located on the grounds of Mount Loret-to. This food pantry serves the needs of the Stat-en Island community. Members will be here at St. Charles this weekend selling chance books to maintain the food pantry. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

RED MASS The Red Mass marks the beginning of our court year and we extend an invitation to all members of the legal community, not only those of the Catholic faith, but all faiths. We pray that all be inspired to perform their varied functions by soliciting guidance and strength during the coming term of the court. The Mass will take place on Wednesday, November 6th at 6:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament Church. The celebrant is Bishop John O’Hara.

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary TimeLong ago, people offered sacrifices to God

for the forgiveness of sins. But when Jesus died,

he was the perfect sacrifice for all time. Now he intercedes for us forever!

The puzzle below contains “all our sin.” There are eight points around the puzzle,

each with a word or phrase next to it.As you connect the points

in the following order, say the words for that point. Then go and tell someone this wonderful truth!Connect points 1 to 5, 3 to 7, 2 to 6, and 8 to 4.

We ask that all of you, our parishioners, be the “welcomers”, but if you do not feel comfortable visiting a new neighbor, let us know and we will take care of it.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SAFE AT HOME… There were two friends, Bob and Earl who really loved baseball their entire lives. One night, Bob passed away in his sleep after watching the Yankee victory earlier in the evening. He died hap-py. A few nights later, his buddy Earl awoke to the sound of Bob’s voice speaking to him from the beyond. “Bob is that you?” Earl asked. “Of course, it’s me!” Bob replied. “That’s unbelievable!” Earl exclaimed. “Tell me, what’s it like up there in heaven?” “Well,” Bob said, “I have some good news and some bad news-which do you want first.” “Well, the good news is that there is baseball in heaven, Earl.” Bob was ecstatic. “That’s wonder-ful. But what could possibly be the bad news?’ Bob replied, “You’re pitching tomorrow night.” Now I do not know what heaven is going to be like. However, I do know that many people, even Christians are sure not in a hurry to get there. This month of November that we have just en-tered is called the month of the Holy Souls. It is a special time for us to remember and pray for all our beloved dead. And they may indeed need our prayers. The Catholic Church still teaches the Doctrine of Purgatory, although you don’t hear too much about it these days. Almost everyone is routinely canonized at a funeral mass today. But we all know better-none of us are saints. We are not perfect, although we should be trying to be. What is Purgatory? The Catechism tells us that all “Who die in God’s grace and friendship but are still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation. But after death they must under-go purification before they enter heaven.” Pope Francis once described himself this way: “I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked up-on.” So even the Pope considers himself as a sinner in need of purification! The truth is, we proba-bly need it more than he does! Now you might ask, well doesn’t a good confession take away all our sins? Yes, it certainly does. When we confess our sins in the Sacrament of Penance, our souls are washed clean. We will not suffer eternal punishment. However, there is such a thing as temporal punishment that is due to our sins and that requires satisfaction. The penances and prayers that we do in this life “repair the damage” that our sins inflict. But if we don’t do that here in this life, we will have to accom-plish this in the hereafter, in purgatory. The time that we will have to spend in purgatory depends on a person’s sins and also upon the prayers of their relatives and friends. That is why it is very important to pray for our beloved dead and to have Mass offered for their souls. A second thought that we might reflect upon in this month of November is the fact of our own mortality. Someday, we will have to shuffle off this mortal life and render an account to God of our time spent here on this earth. There was a tombstone in Ireland that was inscribed this way: “Remember me as you pass by-for as you are so once was I. But as I am you too will be...so be content to follow me.” That sentiment though, proved too much for one Irishman who scribbled on the stone beneath the in-scription: “To follow you I am content-but I wish I knew which way you went!” Let us try to head always in the right direction-the direction of Christ and eternal life! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
